[Q] T989 with busted USB and stock recovery need update.zip please - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I have a Galaxy S2 with a broken USB port that has only stock recovery but needs a ROM [if I do recovery boot I see TMobile 4G boot logo now, but regular boot is Samsung Logo and then black screen]. Since I had them send me my replacement battery charging is not a problem and I have a micro SD Card so it's about only way with a busted USB port to get this thing working before I get slammed and can't return it :-o . I flashed the Zedomax unroot and when it was done it rebooted the device and nothing. BUT it did replace the recovery on me [NICE].
So now I find myself between a rock and a hard place since the usb port is busted I got my replacement and can't send it back until I find a ROM zip I can flash with the stock recovery that will get it to boot the phone so I can format the internal SD and have it with a stock ROM.
If anyone can get me an official update.zip I can put on my external SDCard to get it in the phone and get the stock recovery to recognize and flash it; I would be GREATLY in your debt!!

Get the usb port fixed for 25 bucks. I just did! Just borrow a spare phone for a couple days. I sent it to him and it was on the way back the same day he received it.

Don't have time has to be back to them in 6 days. Just need a rom zip that is compatible with the stock recovery and I can throw it on the external SD. There has got to be a zip around somewhere I can use to flash with the stock recovery and get any version of Android I don't care what version just need it to boot. I did have 4.1.2 on it before, but it could be Gingerbread or ICS I am not picky.

Stock recovery won't flash a ROM, no matter how u name it or anything, the stock recovery doesn't have the capabilities, but if ur worried about sending it back to them rooted or whatever don't, my buddy works for T-Mobile tech devision and says when they receive a phone back like that 90% of the time they never turn it on even, all the do is connect to their system and wipe/flash new stock IMG, or use it for parts for someone else's refurbished phone

Yeah was going to be my last resort. I mean system , data and caches have been formatted, only SDCard [internal] remains, even if they boot to recovery it is their recovery. I don't get how we dont have compatible flash zips. I mean the recovery has gone from only accepting update.zip named files when I got this phone when it first hit, and now it gives you the option of browsing directories and list any zip to try [I am only refering to STOCK ROM flashing via stock recovery not trying to get custom work to flash via a stock recovery here]
There has got to be a way to come up with a stock recovery capable flash zip. Otherwise programmers would not waste the time to include the feature to flash a zip from it if ii were actually fully incapable of doing so.

Half right, the stock recovery does give u the option to try and flash zips of any named file but the stock recovery doesn't have the binaries capable of reading flash scripts, its is possible but u would need to mod the actual recovery itself not just the rom, as the recovery needs to be able to process the flashing script, so in reality that's why it hasn't been done, because in the end ud end up with a custom recovery....

Phone boots to bootloader help

My friend gave me his phone today, I had previously rooted it for him and installed a rom, he said he tried to flash a gingerbread rom not really knowing what he was doing, and now the phone boots directly to the bootloader screen, it also can go into a green recover, from recovery I try to install zip from sd and sd shows nothing, I'm more familiar using odin with samsung phones so any suggestions would be helpful
You could always take the SD card out and put it directly into your computer and copy a rom to it that way, put it back in phone, boot into recovery and flash from there
From recovery toggle ms ( or something that sounds like that) plug it in via usb then copy a Rom, to the SD card.
Your friend probably formatted everything thing including the sdcard during his attempt to flash, which is why there is nothing there.
If his recovery don't have SD mount, feature (ra has it, clockwork not sure) u will have to pull the SD card and copy a rom to it, or u could possibly use and to push the zip to it,

Simple he forgot to flash the gapps.. AOSP roms you have to flash the gapps separately and if you dont it will boot loop to HBOOT... what rom did he try to flash.. Also please let him know that if he had read the OP fully he would of known to flash the gapps as well. Let me know if this was the problem... Good Luck
Mount usb.since its green im more than likely assuming its Amon RA recovery.connect to PC and copy the ROM of your choice, and follow prerequisites if any.usually a data/dalvik/cache and factory reset via recovery will suffice.then just flash from SD--->chose zip file--->yourromzipname.zip then power to flash.

Did I brick my Galaxy s3?

Well.. in a nutshell, I installed CWM recovery, rooted the phone by installing the update from the "SD Card" when it was really the phone's internal memory, and all worked well. The original idea was to edit some .prop file in /system through a root file explorer. Basically, I changed a value as one stupid tutorial suggested which ended up causing the phone to boot in to a black screen. The phone goes in to recovery and D/l mode, but the problem is flashing ANY type of ROM to the phone. Odin is useless because you can only attach .tar, .gzip, .smd,... etc.. and the roms are usually in a .zip format. This means I need to get the .zip rom on to the phone's "Sd card" which is just internal memory and should clearly specify so. I can't exactly access my phone's memory afaik since.. you know.. the phone doesn't have any OS to boot up.
Now what is it that I can do to get a rom on the phone? Android commander is another useless program right now, also. Aside from the program always telling me my rooted phones aren't rooted, the program doesn't even detect the phone while it's in dl mode, recovery mode, bricked mode, garabge mode,... you get the point. I'm just a little irritated after trying for two days to get in to my own internal storage. If anyone has anything to share, and decides to share it, thanks a lot.
bump it would be nice for someone to help....
Nothing is flashing because you changed the ro.build props. There are stock Odin roms floating atound, or you can remove the device check from the updater script in the zips you download and then try to flash.

Or if you have adb you can push back stock build prop back to /system

All these suggestions I read on googled pages from people having similar issues are just such perfect ideas. I wish they worked, though. I have tried pretty much everything.
Since my last post I:
- Wiped every cache you can dream of
- Flashed boot-stock-tmobile-sgh-t999 probably 4 different times, and did the above step after each failure.
- Tried every possible way to get in the "external sd card" meaning "my phone's internal memory"
- Tried pulling the build.props, however without a valid operating system, I'm not going to get very far.
- Looked ALL OVER the internet for a STOCKY RECOVERY ROM in a .tar format. I don't see why it's too much to ask to be able to simply flash a rom from the pc odin since I'm pretty sure I won't be using odin mobile without first getting adroid booted up some how.
Yes, I disabled auto reboot in odin, I've tried pretty much everything and I really don't know where else to turn.
In android updater scripts there is a check into make sure you're flashing the correct phone. If the file is missing, it's going to fail this check and not flash.
If you unzip a Rom and modify this it should work.
On second thought,
You should follow the thread about returning to stock. That has an Odin flash able image that should get you booting again and then you can restart the process to root your phone.

I had that same problem I was only able to go to download mode so I used Odin and flashed stock tmo file to unroot the phone I can't remember exactly what it was called and it worked just fine and now I'm rooted again on cm10 and it works perfectly

boot into recovery with the phone plugged into your computer. then open cmd (if in windows) and cd to the directory with a different rom then do
adb push xxx.zip /sdcard/
wait for it to finish then reboot recovery and flash the rom.

It's failing getprop ro.build.device
It's gonna do that even with pushing a new Rom to the sdcard unless those lines are removed from updater script.

similar problem, but long story short I can't boot into recovery and flashing through ODIN gets me an "unsupport dev_type" message and no results. Any suggestions?
The super obvious suggestion is to just restore your nandroid backup. Before any mod always make one that's in good shape. Every guide tells you to do this but you didn't mention it. Did you not make one? If you can get into recovery and/or DL mode then I'm pretty sure you are not bricked though.

After seeing this OP, are you saying you can NOT get into d/l mode? also, look under devices on win machine, do you see an entry QLOAD*** if so you can NOT and will not get to d/l mode. It is hard bricked. time to get a jtag service. Stop wasting time looking for an answer and get it fixed. again, if you can not get into d/l mode, this is my suggestion. I HAVE BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. BTW, I have the usb jig, IT WILL NOT WORK on hard brick. hehe used it several times on soft bricks though.
Good luck.
Here is a French company doing that rescue service for bricked Galaxy S3 by JTAG
RĂ©parer brick Galaxy S3
Wow, here is a quick and fast service. Get the usbjiig also for future soft-bricks.

[Q] [[SOLVED]] Recovery Broken, Need Help

[[SOLVED]]
Alright, so I checked through a few pages on the forums, and I didn't see anyone posting about this issue I am having..
I purchased my S3 a few days ago, and instantly rooted it. I used the Odin3 v3.07 method with "root66_SPR_L10VPBLJ7.7Z" ROM. That went well and fine. Then I tried flashing CWM recovery, and when I booted into recovery, it was still the stock. So I downloaded ROM Mangager and flashed the touch CWM recovery, after it finished, it asked if I wanted to boot into recovery. I agreed. Then the phone restarted, and upon starting, it showed the SAMSUNG logo, and "recovery booting" in the top left corner for about half a second. Then it just stayed on a black screen. I could do nothing after that. I then took the battery out for about 5 minutes, threw it back in, and the phone started. So I tried to manually boot into recovery, and the same issue. Took the battery out again, phone started properly, so I then tried to get into download mode. That worked fine, so I downloaded the CWM recovery on my laptop, and connected the phone through Odin, and flashed CWM onto my phone. Odin said it passed, but I still have the same issue when I try to boot into recovery.
Any ideas on something I'm doing wrong?
It is likely that your ROM is detecting the custom recovery and replacing it with the stock one. This was a change made to the stock ROM several versions ago. Before that you did not have to do anything extra to load the custom recovery.
The versions LG8 and later have code to detect an unsigned recovery and replace it with stock. You need to:
- Download TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip and place it on your ineternal sdcard.
- Get into Download Mode and connect ODIN.
- Flash the custom recovery with ODIN but do not check the "Auto Reboot" box in Odin.
- Disconnect the phone from the PC once the recovery is flashed.
- Pull the battery to power down
- Boot directly into recovery (Hold Volume Up, Home and Power buttons until recovery appears. Do not allow the ROM to start).
- Once in the recovery you need to flash the Team Epic Root from Recovery.
- Reboot
All Done

Correct; and the reason for this is because the updated stock firmware as a script basically that re-flashes stock recovery upon boot if stock isn't detected. The team epic zip removes that. After doing that; I'd recommend flashing the twrp recovery.

So whats your issue? Why do you need the stock rom...? The drivers are the same and the stock kernel is for stock only, not aosp

Okay I did some research, and I found online that the Samsung phones need .tar.md5 not .img files for recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1484304
I did not use these directions since I don't run linux, and I wasn't going to download VMWare. Anyways, the way I fixed it, I purchased and downloaded Mobile Odin from the Play store. I put the recovery.img on my external SDcard, then opened the app. Under "recovery" I selected recovery.img and then scrolled down to "Flash" It flashed the recovery.img with no problems, then booted me into recovery. I then flashed mrRobinson_Ashaman.v2.20_signed.zip so I could uninstall some bloatware.
That last part was mostly for me, until I find a ROM I like.

Ok thanks!

I think my custom recovery disappeared?

OK first of all I am on custom ROM "GOODNESS JB".... Earlier I was copying a one-gigabyte file from my phone to external sdcard using ES FILE EXPLORER... I put the phone down and left the room... While I was gone the phone turned off because I had it wedged somewhere and the power button was being held down without me knowing... Stupid, I know. Anyway when I went to power the phone back on it was hanging at he galaxy s2 splash screen. So thinking my phone was boot looping, I took battery out and rebooted into recovery only to discover I DONT HAVE CUSTOM RECOVERY INSTALLED!! Which terrified me because I don't have access to a computer and I thought my phone was pretty much useless... But I went to reboot and decided to wait out the galaxy s2 screen since i had no choice and lo and behold after a minute it booted into my goodness ROM while saying Upgrading Android.. What the hell happened?? So I'm safe but I need to install a custom recovery in case anything bad happens. Is it me or did my custom recovery disappear???

Recovery Help!

I recently tried flashing TWRP on my S3 and now getting stuck at boot. I can't even get to stock recovery to factory reset because the usb port on the phone does not work at all. Is there any kind of script or anything I can place on an external SD that would run at boot to get the phone back to stock recovery or anything?
Did the USB port work before trying to flash twrp?
No it did not. Sorry for the late reply
The phone won't enter TWRP or stock recovery? Without a working USB port, I know of no way to get stock recovery onto the phone other than possibly using flashify, rom manager, or some other program that can flash a recovery from the ROM.
No TWRP or stock recovery unfortunately. It powers up to the "Galaxy S3" screen and gets stuck like an old Honda on a deep muddy road. Won't boot past there. Wondering if there's any type of script or something I could put on an external sd card that tells the phone to boot from external and restore back to stock or flash a kernel or anything.

There were debrick images that allowed the phone to boot from an external SD card but a Odin was still needed to flash a stock ROM.
Any chance the images still exist anywhere?
