Basically, someone gave me a very not so clever idea of microwaving my phone to charge it. Being the bright spark I am, I tried it and it worked! 10 secs = +20%. However it overheated my phone really badly, and now the touchscreen doesn't work on the top half of the screen, the home button doesn't work, there are some wifi problems, like very weak connection (where before it was very strong) and the backlight for the back button is very dim.
Now does anyone know of any fixes, or if HTC might repair it on warranty, (but I rooted the phone so I dunno )
All help is greatly appreciated

It actually helps to recharge the battery, as it gives the electons in the battery more energy, then charging it from the wall or PC can give, and also allows the flow of electrons to be more smoother, causing less resistance and less overheating. What I didn't realise is that I need to put in just the battery not the whole phone (metal in the phone duh) and yeah, I'm stuffed.

It is a myth that originated from an APPARENT claim made by Apple saying not to do it, which has since become anecdotal evidence that you can and should.
It's nonsense.
Microwaves cause particles to vibrate but do not deliver electrical charge. Added to that the fact your battery contains a variable moisture content that is vaporized inside the sealed container causing either structural damage or full rupture. Plus the heat can and does destroy the protection circuitry built into the battery to prevent under/overcharge.
There is SOME research into using microwaves to produce lithium iron phosphate batteries, but doing it to a lithium cobalt oxide battery is EXTREMELY dangerous and will shorten it's life if not permanently damage it structurally.
It's another example of the power of Facebook to instantly convey the most ridiculous things to millions of people.

It would be totally irreparable in any case. It would have to be a totally replaced phone. You've completely annihilated all metallic components, which is basically all of them.
Even if you had only put the battery in the microwave in any case, you'd have exploded it and destroyed both battery and microwave, or you'd be walking around with a bomb in your pocket.

Yeah, after I've taken such great care of my Incredible, I made a big mistake today. I was looking through a closet for a box of trashbags, and had the flashlight app on. I found the bags, and thought I had turned the flashlight off, but in fact I had not. I slipped the phone into my pocket.
Well, 5min later I feel a burning in my pants, sure enough the back plate and LEDs had melted under the high heat and fused together. The leds are melted down around the backplate, which has warped around the holes. It's only noticeable if you look kinda close. But, I can't get the plate off. I freaked out.
So, I know a few options, I can pay the $100 deductible and get a replacement phone from my insurance. I want to know, will it be the same hardware? (AMOLED)
I also can attempt to cut the phone apart with a small knife, as it has only fused around the leds. I can live with melted leds (they still work).
My only other question is: what is the possibility of smooth-talking the verizon store rep into replacing the phone under my 1 year warranty? I can nandroid, then get it back to stock before I take it in.
Thanks guys, I put so much time and money into this phone, god I hate when things like this happen.
i would call verizon and tell them there is a problem with the leds and there not working correctly that you cant get the cover off.
Sounds Like A Warranty Replacement To Me.
That's hilarious and sad at the same time. I would call up verizon and have a what if hypothetical conversion about this. Most likely if you get a new Dinc it won't be amoled.

Unfortunately not, I was using Torch from Cyanogenmod. However, I'm sure I could get the same results if I left the HTC app on long enough, as Torch wasn't even on full brightness. It's really weird.
So the general consensus is to call verizon? Not go to a store?

I think going to a store might be best. Do a nandroid, and restore to stock. Make sure you s-on, and pull your SD card out for good measure xD Then show it to a representative and tell them you were using the flashlight app and you put it in your pocket blah blah.
There is this thing called the manufacturer's warranty that covers your phone for 1 year from hardware defects. And that is certainly a hardware defect. The dude will fill do everything for you, and a new one will be sent to you. Don't worry, if you have AMOLED now, you should get a Certified Like-New AMOLED. (Some Verizon internal memo was leaked a few months ago confirming this, and I can personally confirm)

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a hardware defect, as this was not normal wear and tear. LEDs typically do a very good job of heat dissipation, but putting an illuminated one in your pocket is going to allow for an unnatural buildup of heat. Rather than a defect, it's simple physics.
For the OP- definitely restore to stock and take it in for a warranty exchange. However, you may want to leave out the part about having the LEDs on while in your pocket.
Turn flashlight back on for few minutes so that it it melts again and pull the phone apart.

Hahaha I'm no woman. I guess you could call me reckless/uninformed. I haven't seen much hard information that suggests radiation is high enough to cause problems.
And thanks for the responses. This weekend I'll go back to stock, and bring it in to the verizon store in my area. Just double checking, I'm going to tell them that I was using the htc flashlight app, but should I tell them that I had it on for a long time, short time, medium amount of time? I'll know to say that I felt the phone starting to get hot, and then turned it over and saw the melted plastic.
I do that all the time whilst drinking out of a plastic bottle that I left in my car during 100 degree temps.

the SAME thing happened to me on my inc! only i caught it before it actually fused my backplate to the phone! my backplate still got melted though, and the chasis around the LED's. I was also using the torch on CM 6.1, it truned on in my pocket since I had the torch app in quick launch/widget area of the notification bar. I also had the torch set to "High/Death Ray" so im sure that didnt help either!

Hi everyone!
This isn't good. I don't know what caused it, but last night i held my phone and got electrocuted. The electricity was like that of strong static when its very dry and cold then you touch something thats mase of metal.
And just now, i left my phone charging. As soon as i grabbed it , i got electrocuted again. Then after holding it for a few seconds, it hit me again. This time it was the strongest because my wife even heard the electricity. The current felt like it came from the left side of the glass of the screen. The strongest i felt i think came from the dock terminal. I tried touching the terminals again but didnt happen anymore.
Im not sure if it because its too cold the room or if its because it was charging. But either way, i dont think a phone should do that.
Anyone else with this kind of situation?

Sorry I had to have a little chuckle when I saw your question title
I would suggest contacting HTC Support and requesting a replacement. If the replacement does the same thing then it could be your environment.
You must change quickly your phone. Maybe is the LiPo Battery.
Hard to believe that phone could generate enough voltage to actually feel it.
Also don't rub it.
I'll try to observe first. I always charge my phone when im in the office but never had this problem. I will try to use a different power outlet here in the room tomorrow and se if it'll happen again.
I won't be able to return the phone yo HTC any sooner because i'll be going to germany this saturday and i need my phone.
It just bugged me. The electricity was tolerable but a phone shouldnt do that.
My wife made fun of me because i shouted when i got electrocuted. Hahaha!

Not hard to believe at all. Capacitors increase the voltage in the circuit dramatically. They can make 80,000v out of a 9v battery. Think of how a Taser works.
Just return it and either get a replacement or a refund (depends on your reseller/operator/region/country)!

Hi guys ! I hope Im posting this on the right section, anyway posting this on behalf of my friend,
He dropped his Nexus ( still under warranty) into a toilet handbasin which has water in it . He turned it off and took out the battery and cover to let the phone to dry overnight. His speakers weren't working at first , but after a few days, they were fine.
The problem is :
i)Charging is inconsistent now. Phone doesn't charge even it is plugged in , sometimes it does. He have to keep on trying till it says charging AC)
ii)Phone hangs A LOT
iii)Reboot more than usual
iv) Shorter battery life
Question :
i) He wants to return it to Vodafone Australia but not sure if they know the phone had drop into water? Is there a way to know?
ii) Is there a way to fix any of the problem?
iii)(For australians in melbourne) If he can't return it to vodafone, any good service center to recommend?
Thanks guys
ii. Try soak in rice overnight. Should be done after the drop. Anyway u can always try. It works on my Nokia .Dont know if it work on smartphone.

Think he can return the phone without getting caught? I heard there's a red tape some sort of water indicator inside the phone. Is that true?
Yes there is. If you take the battery out, at the top of the 'slot' that the battery rests in theres a little white piece of "tape", that normally has just X's on it. Not sure what it changes to if it gets wet, but thats how they would tell.

There is one actually! http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/qqCnaRuXSHnMhDXJ.huge
Notice the square XXXX inside the phone. Its on the right frame just above the place where the battery is.
My friend checked his, the indicator still okay! sent back to vodafone!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but 99% of the time that indicator is white and BECOMES red when there's water damage. As in, red Xs means water damage.
Edit: After thinking about it and using a bit of common sense, yeah no - red Xs has to mean water damage. I also checked my own phone (with no damage) and, as expected, white indicators. I have the Sprint version so maybe some small, tiny chance it's changed, but neither of mine are X'd and I bought it brand new.
Editagain: Did some research. Apparently my indicators are reverse to everyone else's, but they could still deduce that the problem is water damage - it's not too hard to determine for someone with a bit of hardware experience. I wouldn't get too excited.
Hi there,
I've been using WFS for over three months and one night I placed it in front of air cooler and slept..
From the next day onwards my touch gone wild.. Only 1/4 of the vertical part in the left of screen reacts to touch and the remaining part is dead.
when the device gets heated due to usage or by placing in sun magically touch worked normally as nothing happened..
I brought this to the notice of technician in service center. He checked the device and stated everything with digitizer is fine..
Could anybody explain me whats happening and provide me a solution...
thanks
Maybe a bit moisture accumulated on your digitizer......try using a hair dryer at medium or low heat
Keep the phone in a rice container for 24 hours. remove battery, memory card and sim.

she was on while charging, after i take off the charger the tablet still work 100% ( i guess), but i turned off because was too hot.
The heat was coming from the place where you put the charger. ( i guess was a factory error in the charger and was heat too much, i don´t know)
I´m afraid in the moment i get the tablet to samsung they say that was me that dropped to the ground and broke the screen.
Either the battery expanded and broke the panel or something related to the battery. Im not sure if samsung will replace that.. How old is this tablet?
I would make sure to add a note (hand written message) when returning it to Samsung that you have included the charger and the cable for them to test and I would tape a note to the back of the tablet so they can't say they didn't see it and take pictures of the note taped to the tablet.
If you were charging it with the factory charger and the cable as per the instructions I would fight them to the end for a replacement!
That hole is obviously made by external forces. If it was caused by heat or battery expansion it wouldn't look like that. Either you smashed something onto it or someone else did.

If you are adamant that no one else could have man handled your tablet while you were out, the other possible explanation is that your tablet experienced some extreme temperature and had a pre existing weak point at that position (micro fractures can be invisible to the eye).
It is unlikely that your battery could have become hot enough to crack your screen without bursting into flames first, so the other extreme is more likely. Is there a chance that the ambient temperature of your office dropped to freezing or near freezing while you were away?

No one enter my office because i locked after leaving. And the temperature was always the same, ambient temperature. 10 to 15° celsius.
Most probable scenario is that someone physically damaged the unit since you did leave it unattended. Achems Razor will help cut to the truth.
Occam's Razor
But point well made. Pretty dang amazing damage. Almost looks like a small caliber bullet hole. Yikes! Hope the OP shares what eventually is the result.

I'm interested in buying this tablet which is how I've ended up here (new to the community).
Having some experience with lithium-polymer batteries from hobbies of mine, my first thought was 'what type of battery does it have?' Li-Po batteries have a tendency to expand and potentially catch alight if 'gone dodgy' or over-charged. The Galaxy Tab S uses a Lithium-Ion battery which it turns out can have similar behaviour.
This could well explain the state of the tablet (and the heat). It might not have caught alight with a standard charger, or you got to it before it did. Either way, good thing you got to it when you did!
I can't post any external links yet as I'm still too new, but googling "Lithium Ion battery expansion" and "explosion" shows some examples of what can happen to these batteries (although I don't believe this to be very common).
This type of expansion force from inside the unit would most likely burst the screen and I can only imagine that being pretty nasty, and possibly the cause of the state that your tablet was in.
I trust that you got it replaced through your warranty without any quibble?!..
