Our brand new nexus 7 is not recognising any usb drives attached to it via an otg cable (which works elsewhere) , one of the main reasons that it was purchased
I have heard that it is an issue with android 4.3, and the only solution is apparently to reset it, and this might not be a permanent fix
So to cut a long story short, does anyone know about any potential fixes for this that may be coming out soon?
I am running CM 10.2 nightly and as of 8/24, USB OTG has been supported. Dunno that stock ever had or ever will have this without running some apps.

You need stickmount or similar app.

You need nexus media importer if you're not rooted. To use stickmount, you need to be rooted.
I have the same problem on my new nexus even with media importer.
This app http://goo.gl/7zBgYx claims to work on the new nexus 7 and ive tried the lite version which it indeed does at least show my files on a otg connected usb and lets me view pictures unlike Nexus Media Importer however you need the pro version to play/view files over 30mb, I havent got the time to check right now but if anyone does have successful results please let me know

Tried it and got Android 4.3 Issue 58277 Detected with Nexus Media Importer.
Had a look at this:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=58277
Not going to do a hard reset but someone else has and it still didn't work.
Hope they fix it soon.
I've got same problem.
Is there any kernals I can flash that may fix it? I can't really root as it breaks support in apps I need to use.
There's an issue in Android 4.3 where it makes some incorrect assumptions about when certain mounts become available, a fix for it was committed to the AOSP repo a couple of days back and should make the next OTA, whenever that is.
It can be made to work on existing ROMs.

It can?
How? I'm desperate for a working fix, nothing I have tried works.
I have an idea how to get it working but my test units all have it working now so I can no longer test it because I can't reproduce the broken situation.
So I know it is possible to get it working and possibly how to fix it, but have no way of testing it.

rename /system/lib/libusbhost.so to /system/lib/libusbhost.so-backup
then copy the new one into /system/lib
change permissions to root.root 0644
reboot
I am not using that library and my units are working, so it possibly does fix it in a more reliable way, but isn't absolutely necessary to get it working on current ROMs. I believe there is a race condition in the code that can be resolved.

Problem:
Cannot choose how to connect to PC(no usb options appear on the phone), the phone starts charging as soon as I plug it in.
Possible Cause:
I connected my phone to a USB port on a car stereo and my phone and the stereo kept flipping back and forth between screens. I disconnected the phone immediately, but the USB connected icon was still in my notification bar. I restarted the phone and everything seemed fine until I tried to plug my phone in 3 days ago.
Things I've Tried Already:
-Restarting the phone
-Pulling the battery
-Trying different USB Ports
-Trying different cables
-Trying different PCs
-Trying USB Debugging both on and off
-Trying fastboot on and off
-Trying an "auto-mount" app(Multi-Mount SD)
-Trying "USB Mass Storage" App for Jelly Bean
-Setting Disk Drive mode as default and turning the "Ask Me" option on and off
-Reflashing the ROM (followed these directions for flashing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257731)
-Flashing the USB fix found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24198708&postcount=90
-Flashing a new ROM
-Searching for a solution(derp).

I was thinking about it, but this one has been working fine for months so It seems unlikely to me that that's the cause, especially when i haven't come across anyone running the same ROM with the same problem.
I'll still think about it, I dunno what ROM I'd switch to though. I liked CyanogenMod 7 but that one wouldn't run videos correctly for some reason :\

Yup. I just tried using USB Mass Storage app for JB, and that doesn't work either, although apparently the app does know that the USB is plugged in.
Most likely a port problem on your device. Go to a repair shop and see how much they charge

Well that sucks. I did get it to come up once by flashing a rooted stock rom, but when I selected disk drive nothing showed up on my PC, and when I disconnected it and reconnected it the icon wouldn't show up anymore XP

Try going to a fully stock state (S-ON, stock no root) and see if it helps. If not, definitely a port problem.

I found this one(the bottom one), but it says I have to be connected to a PC to get it to work. Also, I'm from America.
First flash a different rom see if the same issue happens in that rom. You can also boot into recovery and try mounting the sd card before flashing a ruu. You may also want to reinstall the drivers for your phone (the drivers on your pc).

Yeah, sorry about that. I skimmed through the post. After submitting the reply I saw that you already tried a different rom. You could give that a shot, installing htc sync. Have you tried the sd card on a different phone, or connected directly to the computer or a different sd card on your phone? Besides this I'm out of ideas.

Hey guys,
Just last week my Nexus stopped connecting to the PC. First it wouldn't even charge or show the phone in explorer.
I tried bending the connector back up and it started charging again. But it still won't connect in explorer.
Drivers shouldn't have changed but I've tried reinstalling and still nothing. Tried different cables, nothing. Tried different ports, nothing.
EDIT: I was trying to avoid it but I've tried a factory reset and reflash of PA2.99... still nothing.
So I'm a bit stuck right now. Anyone have suggestions?
Have tried searching and the like.
On a different note, possibly related. I bought a Nexus 7 today and tried to unlock and root. Fastboot drivers aren't working. Tried several different packages and methods. No dice. Followed instructions etc.
Thanks

can you see your device in 'fastboot devices'?
can you see your device in 'adb devices', while running android or a custom recovery?
check if there's an updated version of fastboot/adb (not sure what OS you're using)
There seems to be quite a large percentage of these phones where the USB port breaks down. Mine was one of them. I had charging issues and my PC didn't recognize my phone. I still had a guarantee and I had it fixed.

64bit windows 7.
Tried with the latest adb/fastboot drivers.
Not recognized in either. Doesnt show up in any device manager.
The only way i know the phone has some form of connection is that the charging icon comes on.
Starting to think its the port that's broken some how. Bought the phone online back just after release so I doubt I'd be able to get a replacement.
Using airdroid at the moment to backup and transfer files around but thinking I might need to think about a new phone soon.

I'm sorry to hear that, but IMO, yeah, i think you should start looking for a new phone. Don't keep valuable data on this one.
Same issue here. I just UPSed mine to Samsung under warranty. They better fix it, since it's their hardware issue. The phone support kept telling me they were going to reflash it. Good luck doing that without access to USB.

Just got this tablet a couple days ago.
Zeki Tablet TBDG874. It has 4.2.2 Jelly bean. I have been trying to find a way to root it. Have tried several different ways to root(including the update.zip, and crystalroot.zip) and they fail which a expected considering it is a different version of Android OS. Also cant even seem to find a usb driver that works for it either. If i could find a usb driver could dig further in but can't seem to find one anywhere. Called Zeki customer support and they informed me the tablet is very new and they don't have any drivers for it either. Was rather surprised by it, and was also notified they didn't know what rooting was even though i tried to explain it, that was in vain.
Anywho, I am wondering if somebody could send me perhaps there working drivers for usb and maybe they might work on it, or if any other ideas i'm open to try them If you need more info let me know. . If this is in the wrong place, please move accordingly. I have been lingering on here for quite some time but never needed to post before due to great people on here always having a answer for nearly every problem i have had with any android device.

Well finally found drivers for this tablet. If anyone needs them send me a message and i will try and send it. Cant post things yet or i would put them here. However have not found a way to root it yet. Have tried many tools and methods so far to no avail. If anyone has any ideas i'm willing to try anything. I really dont want to have to send it back but it may be looking like i have to. It keeps locking up and have to reset it alot to make it usable again.

King root was the only way I could root mine, but the tablet went crazy after about 2 months and quit booting.

Hello everybody,
It's nearly my first week with my new Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 LTE T805 and I have to admit that,
it is an AwEsOmE experience Great features, fantastic speed, Whoahow screen and colors, e.t.c
But to my also great surprise, I found out that although I have connected my USB stick to my tablet using a microUSB-to-USB
cable, there is no way to "see" it. The USB is formatted in NTFS and I know that there are issues between that and Android, but
I couldn't believe that there isn't a workaround to that problem. Before the Samsung tablet I had an Asus Transformer TF700 Pad with a matching keyboard which by the way had a USB 2.0 port and i could connect my USB sticks and USB HDDs without any issues. It was on JellyBean stock root and ofcourse rooted. Thank God i didn't give it away!!! Until there is a solution on the horizon, with my Samsung:crying: I am going to do all the downloads and transfers to USBs with my Asus.
So this where I need your experience and your knowledge.
Is there something wrong with my tablet, my microUSB cable or it is a known problem regarding the Android?
Is there a way to bypass this problem that anyone from the community might know?
So practically the microUSB port exists only to charge our tablet? What happens if someone wants to put a USB stick in the proccess, because that someone wanted to transfer a number of files from his tablet at home to the PC at work?
Please, I would appreciate it if you could help me out with your knowledge
Thank you in advance for your time,
P.S.
My Samsung is rooted with Stock root KitKat and TWRP custom recovery installed
You need need a different kernel as the stock kernel doesnt natively support ntfs, however apparantly skyhigh kernel does http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ent/kernel-skyhigh-tw-kernel-synapse-t2854933
You also need the correct usb otg cable. This one works fine http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dual-Powe..._MobilePhoneDataCables_JN&hash=item1c48b0c84a
Yes, as previously stated that my SkyHigh kernel does support NTFS r/w (amongst many other things).
You will require an app to mount r/w, paragon app is recommended. Else you can have r/o access with root type file explorer to /mnt/ntfs/.....
Thank you very much for your help, @ashyx, @UpInTheAir
But to tell you the truth I am quite afraid to flash a new kernel to my tablet, for 2 reasons mainly
1) I don't know the proccess of doing it
2) I am afraid that it might be too complicated workaround for a noob like me and I don't think I will complete
such a difficult task:crying:
Do you happen to know if with the upcoming Android - 5.0 Lollipop version, that matter will be solved?
So until further notice I will only buy the USB Hub that you recommended and I will keep my Asus tablet (which has has a keyboard with USB2.0 port that works) until Samsung finally decides to solve that matter once and for all for the millions of people out there.
Thank you very much for your time,

1) Read the relevant kernel thread, it has INSTRUCTIONS. ..
2) It's not a work-around. It's actually the only solution. I will be blunt, if you believe it's too difficult to follow my thread requirements, instructions and other info, then best you forget about NTFS.
LP probably won't solve NTFS support, because Samsung doesn't enable it in stock kernel.
Thank you very much UpInTheAir for your quick reply,
If it is the only solution, then I will read your kernel thread and your instructions and by the end
of that proccess I will have NTFS support on my tablet.
But nothing of this would have been possible for all of us without your precious work and help @UpInTheAir

Just make sure the correct kernel is flashed for your device model
kernel v2.5.0 is latest for T805 and use paragon app from Google Play ( give SU access )
I've implemented a lot of support into kernel for synapse app, you don't need it, but there are many kernel tweaks available by using it.
Best of luck and good reading
The process of installing the kernel is far easier than you probably imagine. However you will need to be rooted to install a custom kernel. Thankfully this process is also very simple with CF AUTO ROOT .
My advice is this : root your tablet, install flashify from play store, back up your stock kernel with it, then use it to install Sky High kernel. Done.
Thanks to UpinTheAir for the kernel. I have done a fair bit of kernel and Rom development myself in the past, so I know the time and effort that developers put into these things. :good:

He wishes NTFS .....
Thank you all for your interest and your kind advice regarding Android and NTFS compatibility,
After long thought I have decided to get rid of NTFS format which is not supported by my android tablet
and go for the new and much promising exFAT which is supported by many platforms.
So I took one of my USB sticks and formatted using exFAT, then copied all my files in and then I connected it with my
microUSB cable to my Samsung tablet. Voila!!! Everything worked like a charm! I "saw" my USB right away from my file
explorer and i was able to copy back and forth from it, even a couple of my bluray movies
So finally after taking into consideration everything you told me, and after reading a lot of posts on this forum I decided
to follow that course and I am very happy with my choice so far:fingers-crossed:
But the choice I made is a result of the precious knowledge and kind help that is provided by the members of this community to all of us noobs:cyclops: seeking help. From the bottom of my heart thank you all for your kindness that you showed me and the help that you provided:good:

The plugging in of a usb drive is not the issue. You can do that with a cheap otg cable and any storage device. As said its ntfs support, its silly that this isnt supported by default.

Yup, I couldn't agree more with that. It really sucks that NTFS is not supported and as all indications show will not be, at least in the near future
So for me exFAT is the second best option in order to bypass this lack of NTFS support on Android.

it is an AwEsOmE experience Great features, fantastic speed, Whoahow screen and colors, e.t.c

You can format you usb stick, external hdd to exfat file sistem. No root neded, no kernel. Just a functional usb otg cable.

I know that. ..
The OP specifically stated he was using NTFS. I gave him the only option if NTFS was required.
He's using an alternative, exFAT may not mount to some OS though. ...
I dont think some people are quite getting it here. I have several drives that are already ntfs and full of data, formatting is not an option. I'm guessing the op is the same.

Yup, the OP remains the same, me
If you have as many disks as you have and with lots of data on them, then yes you are absolutely right, it gonna take lots of hours of copying and pasting files back and forth until you are done
But it is the only way I can think of, unless ofcourse you want to flash another kernel which supports NTFS
And I was told by the kind developer himself it comes by the name of SkyHigh kernel and supports NTFS r/w
My way is an easy workaround to a problem (By changing from one file system to another) and his way is a solution to the problem.(By keeping the same filesystem)
Ofcourse you can use the way that suits you best
Hi!
I hope you nice guys could help me out getting my Nexus 7 recognised on a PC, after 2 days of hard work (googling and pulling my hair, literally), no matter what I did, all went in vain. Installed several drivers from google, samsung, htc etc but absolutely nothing happened. Things that I already have tried include
Turned USB debugging on/off
MTP/Camera
Reset my Nexus 7
Tried Windows/Mac/Linux
Tried different cables
My Nexus 6 and LG G2 have no such problem, they get identified for file transfer, fastboot or adb easily, but Nexus 7 is a nightmare. I want to flash 5.0.2 manually because I have TWRP installed. When I connect to a PC it just charges itself and doesn't give a single hint that its connected to a PC, please help me out. What could be the possible problem.
Thank you very much.
Best regards.
I been in this situation before on other device. You need to uninstall all other drivers and restart you computer.
plug in your nexus 7 and let the device driver install itself
Done that already. I tried on 5 different machines 2 macs, 2 Windows and a linux. 1 Windows and one Mac machine was absolutely fresh. Thanks for your reply.
Any other ideas.

Why can't you use OTG and flash or transfer the rom from a thumb drive? If OTG won't work, it tells you that the USB port is somehow damaged. Its contact points to the board have been known to disconnect on their own due to shoddy soldering.
Hi,
I have exactly the same problem : have tried to connect my tablet to several computers (windows, linux), on different USB ports and with differents USB cables, but I can't get the computer to recognize the tablet (even in fastboot mode). But wharging the devices works without problems.
I'm starting to think that the microUSB port on the nexus is damaged, even if I've always been cautious with it. The worst part is that Asus is telling me that the tablet is only under 1 year warranty whereas the booklet inside the box says 24 or 36 months... (i am past the first year).
I am considering a serious conception flaw because of other similar posts.
Thanks graphdarnell and luna. I think this is the problem. I tried on several other machines of work and friends, and the broken USB port seems the only reasonable explanation.
So now that I have a nexus 7 with broken USB port, how can I update my nexus 7. Can I revert to stock recovery and install the ota update, or do I have to live with 5.0 with a permanent notification of 5.0.2 update for the rest of its life?

FWIW, I have never been able to get any of my computers to connect to my Nexus 7 in anything other than fastboot mode. I have installed/uninstalled drivers hundreds of times. Eventually just gave up and started using usb-otg.

Did you try OTG? If yes, and it doesn't work, the solution would be to re-flow the usb port. It's no big deal, but you need a little patience, some soldering skills, and the right soldering tip. I could have helped you if you were nearby.
CM 12 has ADB through wi-fi (if I remember correctly), but it's pointless in your situation. Airdroid in Playstore allows you to transfer files through wi-fi from PC to tablet. And there are other apps functioning similarly too.
A word of caution: you want to be careful with the official Lollipop (which has been pulled off the shelf by Google). Lots have found out the hard way how it might brick your tab without warning. Use one of those custom roms (Clean Rom 5.1 or CM12) that is Lollipop-based instead.

OTG also is not working, so I think it's safe to assume that its broken. I tried flashify to flash the stock recovery instead of TWRP, but after that I have got nothing, no TWRP no stock recovery. Whenever I try to start recovery it shows a dead android bot with "No command" written over it, and OTA update is giving some kind of error. I am not sure what to do next. All I can do is transfer as much files as I need to my Nexus 7 over wi-fi.
Any help please..... I just want to flash 5.0.2 with broken USB port and apparently no recovery installed.
You could try the nexus root toolkit:

It has a very nice windows driver installation and troubleshoot section.
