[Q] 7" tabs don't work at all with apple / macs ? - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

started with a galaxy tab 2 (7 inch) and tried to mount it via usb transfer, tried adb, tried aft mode, mtp mode, nothing, absolutely nothing connected.
puzzled, i thought it was the weird proprietary specific usb cord, and returned the tab 2.
then i bought the galaxy tab 3 ( still 7 inch ), and happily connected it to my computer. nothing. no adb, no file transfers, no mass storage, no possible way to root, flash, or chance anything on this device. yes, i tried another computer, which is also a mac. the first mac is a (intel model) hackintosh (but flashes/mounts/transfers just fine from all 4 of my android phones), but the second machine is a mac mini (intel model), and fails also.
both of these tablets are shown in system preferences as "ANDROID DEVICE blah hoo filly" or whatever, but will not mount their internal or microsdcard storage locations on the macs.
yes, i've tried the AFT app. it doesn't 'see' the tablets either.
question:
is this typical of samsung, or android tablets in general, since my phones all work fine ?
how can i fix it so that adb, file transfer, and all normal usb things work with my tablets ?
please don't tell me to buy an ipad. this is for my kids, and i really don't want them starting on ipads.

[Q] I just can't get my phone to mount to my Mac. Help!

Hey, guys. I've tried everything to get my phone to mount to my Mac and it just won't happen. Here's what I've got so far:
1. I have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 on an iMac 27", 2.66 GHz i5, 4GB RAM. I'm running stock DI18, but I do have it rooted from oneclickroot method that I did on my roommate's PC.
2. I've tried multiple USB cables plugged directly into the back of my iMac. Even the USB cable that came with the phone. Phone was never recognized by my iMac.
3. Tried Debug mode, keeping the screen on checked, tried mounting... not recognized.
4. Tried re-formatting my SD card, debug mode, tried mounting.... Still nothing.
5. I can unmount the SD card, put it in an adapter, plug it into my iMac, and it will THEN recognize the SD card. But not when it's mounted in my phone.
What else can I try? NOTHING is working here. Is there something I can work with in OSX or some command I can run in Terminal? Any suggestions? Thanks!
I'm on the phone with Sprint's Advanced Technical Support and they're baffled.
It works when I hook it up to my roommate's computer with Vista 32-bit. It recognizes the phone on my Mac when I plug it in to mount. However, you never see the phone in Finder.
Is there any command I can run in Terminal to see if it's mounted?
Try restarting your comp or logging in/out.
Sometimes it doesn't show up for me in finder either, but will after I restart it.
I tried that too. Both Sprint and I are baffled as all hell. I've tried 3 separate USB cables as well. I'll try my roommate's Macbook Pro when she gets home.
i've seen you tried all these different cables ect.. but did you happen to try any different usb ports on the mac? (never stated if you did so or not). Just throwing out suggestions. sometimes in panic you forget the simple things! Good Luck

[Q] How do you transfer data from the phone to computer via USB Cable

I have no option for usb data transfer. Just MTP and PTP. When trying to drag and drop I get "Calculating the time required to copy the files". It copies nothing.
Airdroid, wifi explorer, kies doesnt transfer a damn thing.
ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!
Make sure that your drivers have been installed properly, first off (I think this is a big problem for a lot of ppl). And on the phone, in Settings > Storage > Menu > Computer Connection > "Media device (MTP)" is checked. (I also believe unchecking "USB Debugging" in Developer options can help, too).
If your drivers are set up, you should get a prompt (assuming you're on Windows 7) to "open folder and view files" and you'll get an Explorer window. Just drag/drop files on the device.
You can also use a WiFi FTP transfer app (I wanna say AirDroid is a popular one?). Some prefer it this way.
How can you tell if the drivers have been installed properly?
I can drag and drop one file at a time but nothing more

If you plug your phone in and don't get an error. And in device manager it should show up as "Galaxy Nexus" or "Samsung Galaxy Nexus".

Sounds like a possible issue with your setup. I just recently re-installed a fresh 32bit Windows 7 install on my MacBookPro, and without any driver tweaking or anything I was able to connect and drag/drop files back and forth.
I do have issues with my desktop and plan on wiping it.

MTP can be finnicky but there's no technical reason why it can't work just fine (as I said it works perfectly for me and others here).
Have you tried something like AirDroid (linked above)? Or if you're just sitting on WiFi you can always just upload to DropBox (Google Drive) and download on the phone/PC.
airdroid hasnt worked for me. I'm not positive but I think there are certain files that won't transfer via cloud.

Should be able to transfer anything. Don't see any restrictions to it.
Is your Kies properly Installed?
Hi,
If your Samsung Kies was properly installed (means took quite time for installing Driver for Samsung devices). Your phone should be detected once connected via USB cable. Some devices may have different situations. Exp. file transfer in SamsungGalaxyTab10.1 will not display exact time for file transfer Window. Once device connected via USB cable, and Your device's Name Pops Up in your window, means it's successful. Transfer shd not be problem.
Sometimes, Phone may not the cause, perhaps ur Pc/laptop might limited capability for Kies Support.
If your case is different, perhaps you can uninstalled and reinstalled it in control panel. Uninstalling Kies will not remove ur Phone's Driver data. Hope this Helps.
Sincerely,
whitefang
**** takes forever to transfer via usb. is this a known issue on the nexus or just me? I have never had a phone with issues in transfering data. I'll give a clous service a try again. I appreciate your help

It's a known "issue" that people have really funky PC setups and have issues installing drivers. It's not inherently a technological problem with MTP or the Galaxy Nexus. As I said before, it's just a bit more finnicky than USB Mass Storage (UMS), which is used on most other phones.
I'll keep referring to the fact that on a bare Windows 7 install, with no previously installed drivers, I was able to plug in my Galaxy Nexus, auto-install drivers, and xfer files back/forth without a hiccup... that'll give you an idea for where the problem lies
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523691 try this it has wifi sync using it all the time
ive got windows 7 ultimate, no issues, works as it should

Like martonikaj said, you should be able to transfer everything wirelessly. It's probably your fastest bet.
I either do that, or use ADB. While it's not as fast, I find it to be more stable than MTP (but that could be just me).
I assume download files as a zip and then open them on the pc? I assume all I would have to transfer would be titanium backup since it contains all app and system data. I know some of my questions might seem silly but i want to make sure i dont loose any data.
I've tried downloading the samsung drivers on 3 different pc with 3 different operating systems and cant get the drivers to properly load. I'm a little upset with Samsung at the moment. I never had a problem wit HTC or Moto phones.
you can use Alt Mounter app on mac & windows
go to goole & search it
then download AltMounter.apk & install it to your phone
then download altmounter for windows & install it to your pc
after that run altmounter in your pc & also run altmounter in your phone
after that plug the usb cable . the phone storage shows up in a window
this is verys simple & i like it
you can use it if you have problems with MTP
I'll give it a shot, thanks!

[Q] Why won't Note 2 connect to PC after going into Download Mode?

My AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II cannot be seen by my computer if I put it into Download mode?
I have installed the Samsung usb drivers several times. Even tried the latest drivers. My computer can see the phone just fine until I put it into Download Mode and connect the usb cable. Then it sees nothing!
I have a dual boot Win 7 64 bit system, and I have installed the drivers on both partitions with the same results. I've rebooted the computer and the phone many times as well, but it does not work.
Any ideas would be helpful..
Thanks,

simple MTP is working well?
What is MTP? Does that mean mount the phone?
I can connect the phone to my computer anytime and see it just fine. I see the internal storage and also the SD card.
MTP - Media Transfer Protocol
That standard Phone to PC mode you can select after plugging it in.
Do you have USB debugging selected in the developer options menu?
Yes debugging is on. And I can normally transfer files. I've copied tons of music and a few movies.
I've found that these phones just don't get along well with some computers, and their usb connectivity is very inconsistent between phones. I have 2 GS3's and a Note 2. One my home laptop, one of the GS3's works fine, while the other will rarely even be recognized unless I swap the plug to another port a few times. After it's recognized, it frequently stalls on file transfers, and it crashed trying to update to JB. The Note 2 always is recognized, but similarly, large file transfers fail.
All three of these phones work flawlessly when connected to my work computer, using the same cable. I had a Focus that behaved similarly, so I think it's a Samsung issue. I've never had this problem with other brands.
Use version 1.8 of SGS3 Easy UMS app from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009
Gives you good old fashioned reliable USB disk mode.
Thanks for the replies. I have a laptop that I am going to give it a try on. Fingers crossed.

That thread says it only makes the SDCard available. If I am rooting, I need the internal as well, right? So, that doesn't sound like it will help for what I am doing.

I used to have an HTC Android Incredible, so it didn't call it that. But I just looked, and yes that MTP thing is on by default when I plug it into my computers.
NOTE:
I finally got it to work by using my other laptop. YEA!
Thanks All!

By download mode I assume you are trying to flash something in ODIN, correct ? If yes, then make sure you are using the USB the phone came with. If you are not seeing a COM reading on ODIN, try a different USB port on the PC/Laptop. I know my USB 3.0 port always gives me problems with connectivity to bootloaders and such. Attached is a pic of what the phone looks like in download mode and what ODIN should show when it recognizes the phone. Hope this helps.

I finally did get it to work on a different computer. Yes, I was trying to root using the Toolkit, and when it got to ODIN it could not see the phone when it booted into download mode.
When the Toolkit did boot it into Download mode though, it did not show that small text in the upper/left corner on the phone screen. I could only get that text when I booted manually into Download mode. I'm not sure what the difference is....
So far, I have it rooted and am going to try and flash the NOTEorious Prime ROM. It says to backup my APNs first, which I did with APN Backup & Restore app. But it cannot restore them in JB 4.1. I read somewhere to tell Titanium Backup to make APN B&R a 'System App', which I did, but that still will not restore APNs. So, now I am wondering that if I installed the NOTEorious Prime ROM, will that 'let me' restore APNs? Or since it is JB it won't still..
Thanks for the reply BTW..
May be you can use the old fashioned way. ..use a pen and paper to write the apn and details somewhere and if you lose them on the rom. ..you can enter them manually
handwritten from my note 2 (N7100)
I still find MTP a less than optimal solution, coming from HTC devices which are recognized as external drives when connected.
Guys, Please remember that MTP is only applicable when the device is switched on. This is for internal "Virtual SdCard" and external Sd Card.
Download mode opens up the other storage on the device, "mmcblk0p*" for flashing reasons with Odin.

[Q] USB issue with Win7 -device unknown

I apologize if this isn't the proper forum.
I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 (The non LTE version) with T-Mobile. I have used the KIES 3 software to backup my phone.
I got a Samsung Galaxy S4 (the M919 model) with T-Mobile.
First, I connected the phone to my Win7 64-bit Home Edition pc with the same Galaxy S3 USB cable. It charges, and I hear the "boo-beep" and Windows 7 says it's installing device software and then comes back and says "unknown device" installation failed. In Device Mangler, it shows up under USB controllers, for some reason as "unknown device".
Okay, so I reinstalled the Samsung USB drivers.
No go
I used the actual S4 cable that came with the phone.
No go.
I have done the debug USB mode. No go.
I have verified that the MTP protocol is used (vs. Camera) and that it's set to MTP+ADB
I've switched back and forth to camera vs. MTP
Windows seems to detect the USB signal in that it knows when it's plugged in and when it's not, but it seems to IMMEDIATELY (and I mean very very fast, like under 1 second) "find" it always as a USB controller -> Unknown Device
So, I've tried my laptop. windows 7 64-bit. Same thing.
I had a spare pc around, so I even reformatted the drive and put a fresh copy of windows 7 on it. Same thing.
I've manually installed the Samsung drivers (without KIES). Still no go.
So I guess my questions:
1) Is there some other method to verify USB port is working properly? (like can you connect it to something else and have it work)? I'm assuming it's good since not only does it charge, but it at least is attempted to connect with Windows 7
2) I've got 2 more cables ordered --official Samsung ones--just in case
3) Can you root and unroot a phone without USB? It seems they all require USB drivers, and ODIN to work. I ended up having to manually backup the S3 via GCloud or whatever to get my stuff transferred over.
Oh, I also have an SD card in the phone.
Yes, I tried unmount it, and even removing it, rebooting, etc. Still no go.
I am trying to find an XP machine to see if that works any better.
thank you.

PC requirements to use ODIN ?

So, I read, watch videos, it all seems very easy. my main laptop is mac, I saw a mac version to root..did not work for me. I have a 3 year old toshiba
running windows 7.
I installed the latest drivers...I tried odin 7 and 9. The Note hooks up to odin (get the connected comm light) and attempts to root with CF.
What happens is it started to root, progress bar on phone moves about 1/8" and just sits there... waited up to 10 minutes and no dice.
I tried different cables etc. I pulled out my old s4 and was able to root / unroot with no issues.
The only thing I do not know, when I connect the note, I get a message that says it would perform better on an USB2 port? I do not know if its USB 1, 2 or 3???
Just trying to figure out if I should pick up a cheap laptop (newer) to try to root? My close friends all have mac and others are never around to try another pc...just don't want to dump coin on a laptop if it won't work, anybody else run into this? or have other ideas?
thanks
Problem fixed
So, I'm guessing my old toshiba had USB1??? ran out to costco, bought a cheap laptop with windows 7... booted up, downloaded cf / drivers
plugged in note... within 10 seconds..done....rooted
I have a mac and rooted via virtual windows on it. Worked fine
