In basic terms, what does each of these things do. I understand that Rooting gives you full file system aces, but why do you need to Unlock to root. And i've also seen s-off thrown around a bit, how is s-off different from root? If someone could ELIN(explain it like im a noob) it would be much apreciated.
I just googled and came up with this.

I can't seem to get this, and I would really like to get S-Off sorted today, so I can flash a custom ROM. I used Visionary+ to obtain perm root on my Z, and now I'm trying to get there...
However, my original Desire is still S-On, and I've been flashing ROMs on it for months... is S-Off really necessary?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
There is another user who was in the same situation as you, see this thread for more info.

Your original has a hacked bootloader which is not the best way to go. The gfree method is the real way to get and use s-off. The real way is much safer and let's you recover from mistakes a lot easier.

Hey guys. I'm going to order my DINC2 tomorrow because I'm due for an upgrade. I've been reading a LOT around these forums. There is a TON of information and I love it, but the thing is, there's too much to the point where I don't know if everything is up to date, etc. My main goal with my DINC2 will just to be to flash a ROM based on CM7 that is currently on these forums. The thing is, there is a way to do this that looks sort of outdated. It is the method that involves downgrading hboot, then doing all the other misc stuff that is shown in a guide. I came across a tool that unlocks the bootloader from htcdev (not sure if I am allowed to reference this. sorry in advance if this violates rules).
The thing is, there is all this talk of S-off/S-on, perm root, etc. and it's overwhelming for me because I have never owned a smartphone before, much less an Android smartphone. What would be the most up to date method to flash the CM7 ROM onto the DINC2? The Unlock Bootloader method seems like it would be much simpler....but I'm not sure what capabilities the unlocked bootloader would give me.
Hi, welcome. You should root with revolutionary. Plain and simple. Bootloader unlock makes you have to do an extra step whenever you flash a ROM. I would go to revolutionary.io and use their method. It is actually very easy. If you HTC unlock, you can use my guide on what to do next in my signature.
Thank you for directing me to that link. I've been wondering for awhile if anyone had a super concise guide on how to do EVERYTHING.....really good guide!
But as stated before, the ideal way is to downgrade and s-off. No extra steps involved when flashing a new ROM or anything.

S-off and revolutionary is the way to go. Nat3mills on YouTube has some vids that walk you through the process. It is really not that bad.

I have a new T-Mobile M8. My previous phones have been Samsung for a long time. I am familiar with rooting them. HTC is new to me. I would like to root my M8, but I don't care to unlock it unless that is required to root. And I want to be able to get back to stock if I need to. All I really want to do with root is to use FolderMount. I looked through the threads in this forum but didn't recognize anything that showed just how to root and get back. I may have missed it for sure. Anyway, if someone could point me in the correct direction, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks!
Frank
Follow the thread "[GUIDE] [T-Mobile] Unlock Bootloader, Install Custom Recovery, Root, S-Off"
Just dont do the S-off part. The stock images are on here or just save your own.

Thanks! Followed the instructions and now have root
So I have totally been off the scene for quite sometime and now finding the time and interest to be involved in this again, but where to start really? I feel so lost and out of the loop. Read through a lot of the posts and done my research for root and s-off. After reading I see that 4.4.3 has been causing some issues. I have my Verizon M8 running Stock. No root. 4.4.3. Where the heck do i begin?
What do I need to do for root since Weaksauce no longer works?
How do I gain root access and what programs am I needing that are up to date and functioning properly.
S-off? Firewater? Understand I need temp root, but I want permanent root.
Interested in TWRP for sure for custom recovery and flashing.
Can I get some help for a returning lost person? I wanna know exactly what programs I am going to need that are up to date. I want to flash custom roms etc of course (already have one in mind) but would like to know what the best android L themed one would be.
Looking forward to hearing from you guys. Thanks for the help and time you took to read this.
You don't need S-OFF necessarily, but you either have to unlock your bootloader on htcdev site, or use Sunshine to unlock and S-OFF for 25 bucks.
Those are your 2 options.
Then you can flash custom recovery and ROOT.
Hello all,
I know lots of threads about different ways to do it, but if I could, I would like to get a step by step on what I need to do.
I was rooted and unlocked, never s-off. I unrooted, relocked, and flashed stock RUU, but it still says relocked and software modified in bootloader. How can I get rid of all of this? What I want, if possible, is S-On, unrooted, locked phone, that doesn't save any of if anywhere and you cannot see anywhere on the device? It looks like I might need to re-root and unlock to do this, which I'm fine doing, if I can achieve my end result.
Is there anyway to do this? Thanks in advance!
Yeah, use SunShine to gain S-OFF after actually you got SuperSU installed back..
