Hello,
So last year I took the plunge and got myself one of these extremely overrated fancy touch screen phones. Ever since day one, I've been having issues with the phone not communicating with the USB, yet my A516 had no problems, aren't newer phones supposed to be better?
It's not driver related or computer related. My brother has the same phone and his communicates with the PC all the time with no issues, his is the T-999
Last year, I used his cable and it worked after a few tries with my phone, and was able to quickly root it, but after that it shat the bed again.
I tried again last week and it worked both on my laptop and my PC, but now it has the same problem, very frustrating.
I've tried a few USB cables and a few computers as well, all end up with the same problem. I used KIES, the Snapdragon Toolkit and the drivers off of Samsung's website. I even installed Linux on my PC hoping that it would solve it, but nope, nada.
Jiggling the USB cable on the phone does not do anything either
Anyone have an ideas what it could be?
As of now, I am running a Rooted S3 I747 with AOKP 4.2.2 Build 3.6.2013
Thanks.
EDIT:
When using the S3 Toolkit, there is a serial number, but it shows it as offline.

Hi guys,
I'm considering flashing the JB leak but I'm hesitating for some possibly unrelated reasons that maybe you all can clear my mind about.
I recently bought a new Acer Aspire laptop and a couple weeks later a Galaxy Nexus. I used to have a Dell laptop and a Galaxy S2 that I rooted and maintained using that Dell with no problems. After getting my new tech I plugged in my Gnex and installed the drivers, then installed the Gnex toolkit for rooting my phone.
I rooted the phone with ease, but ended up having to return that phone because it had screen problems. Shortly after the toolkit and drivers installation, my new laptop began having terrible problems: It would randomly BSOD while performing simple tasks and then tell me that no OS was installed, and it developed an extremely annoying habit of randomly beeping and dimming while plugged in and charging.
It was so bad that I tried a factory reset, which did not solve the problem. I eventually sent the laptop back to Acer for repairs. According to the report I received, they updated the HDD firmware and BIOS to correct the problems. I haven't had any of the problems since it was returned, but it's only been a week or two.
So now I have a new Gnex and my repaired laptop. I want to root it and flash JB but I'm paranoid about the driver installation process effing up my laptop again. I don't know for sure that this is what caused the problem. Coincidence is not necessarily causation. I also don't understand why smartphone drivers would cause a problem like the beeping I suddenly experienced.
What do you guys think? Is it indeed possible that setting up the rooting environment caused the problems I experienced? Or was the laptop's firmware simply faulty from the get-go and I've been deceived by the timing of it all?
TL;DR
Want to root, but setting up the rooting environment appears to have seriously messed up my laptop last time I did it. Is that at all possible?
Follow this and forget about toolkits.

On my phone, rooting, roms and cwm make incurable problems to my htc...
I an not going to root again until my phone has been with me for at least two years, the htc warranty has an expiry date on new phones... Oh no, another problem...
When I plug my phone pc gives me error that it doesn't recognize the USB device. I tried to adb to phone, still no luck. I was on cm11, reinstall rom. I uninstall driver from device manager, and adb drivers. Still can't connect. I was reading on the Internet maybe the device is bad. I had my nexus for 2 years and I never had this problem. Adb and my computer would always recognize my device. The thing that sucks my Verizon contract expired so I cancel my service. I was going to program my phone for page plus, but I can't because my computer won't recognize my phone. I had to activate my Samsung fascinate with page plus, but it sucks cuz I really wanted my nexus, can anyone help?

Could be a few things, but I would try a different USB port on your PC, then I would try a different USB cord, and then try a different PC. If none of those get you a different result then could be the USB/charging port on your device, even though it may charge, it may still have trouble transferring data. I have seen on here where others have changed the port on their device and say it is fairly easy, I have not had to do so yet so I can't say from experience. If you are sure that you have the latest Samsung drivers installed on your PC then I doubt it is software related (not positive). Not sure if I am any help, just throwing out some suggestions. Maybe someone else can add some more definitive answers for you.

Try this Universal Naked Driver
If you can work with device over ADB but system doesn't recognize phone, you must have bad drivers or OS. Try linux. I
Well I got my phone to work. I was reading how someone use a toothpick to lift up the tongue inside the USB port. So I use a tiny flathead messed with it for like a hour, kept plugging it to my pc until it connected. Once it did I push all the files I needed with adb to get it ready to get it ready to be program for page plus. Now I got my nexus on page plus, just activated it today, service is pretty good , they only that sucks is their is no 4G, but it feels good to only pay $50 for unlimited voice, text and 2.5 gb of data.

Hi there. This is my first xda post but i've been playing with rooted phones for a while now. I have a T999l that i just got and i was able to connect to my pc to root no problem. i ran for a week on a custom rom and it connected fine. yesterday i tried to connect to pull pics and i got no pc connection at all.
What Ive tried,
Several cables,
new drivers
download mode and adb both failed
mobile odin to stock, flashed fine but still no connection
Phone charges fine and software seems fine.
I really need to find a solution as this phone is used for work.
History:
phone is an insurance issued phone less than 2 weeks old. i dropped it in a case and screen cracked. next day i lost pc connection.
could this bee software related or if hardware what are my options outside of a 2nd insurance claim?
any help would be greatly appreciated
my stats:
Samsung Galaxy S3 t999l
S3RX 3.0
4.3 bootloader :/
I'd check to see if your mini-USB port is borked. It will still charge fine but if the 11th pin is borked, the phone won't connect.
Unless you have not done so already, try another PC.
Thanks I did try another pc. Ill pull apart my usb connector and inspect it but I think ill just have to do another insurance claim

Hello to all. I am emperiencing a number of problems on my deb. Some are listed below. These problems were not experienced in the first 3 months:
1) THE BATTERY
I cannot use the tablet while charging. It does not charge i.e. It needs to be in a specific position to charge.
Also, I am experiencing Huge Battery Drain. It charges 5-15% in 2:30 hours. This happened after I used the PA 4.5 beta 1(Using MultiROM. This stayed even after I deleted the ROM And reverted back to stock.
2) THE SIM CARD
I don't know when it happened but the sim was working fine before. I didn't use the sim very often except for validating whatsapp. But as I tried to validate, no messages arrived at my nexus. I thought that the sim had become defective. But it worked just fine in other phones!
I even contacted Asus about this but they asked me to first factory reset it. I decided it was too big a deal and did not.
3)THE OTG CABLE
My Nexus recognized the otg usb drive at first. When I tried to use it again, It just wouldn't recognize it. Tried using a mouse too (had worked before). Did not work. Tried on different roms. Nope.
4) USB COMPUTER CONNECTIONS
I had used it before to copy files from my laptop to my nexus. It worked fine. After some time, I tried to do it again, the pc would recognize it sometimes say it was unknown sometimes say it was Nexus 7 but wouldn't install drivers. Tried using Wug's to no avail.
Today, I tried using it on my other pc. The drivers installed just fine, but there was no sign of it in My Computers. In Wug's, the device was able to operate fully! It tried using various backup commands, and they worked! But the push/pull command did not work. Though that turned out to be a problem of the toolkit as I pulled the files I need with ADB PULL command in cmd.
So, as some of these problems are hardware related, I am thinking of giving it back to Asus. I am rooted and performing The Wug's Flash Stock +Unroot Option Now. Please if you have any advice, post it here.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Judging from the symptoms, you likely have a bad usb port. I wouldn't say the cable since your otg cable yielded the same result. According to some, it's really fragile when you handle it rough. The port is soldered to the I/O board so either you (1) try to bend back the inside pins; or (2) replace it if you're skillful enough with your iron; or (3) replace the board (ouch!). It's a shame if you have to choose (3) since that means throwing the board away for just one bad component. Litter.
1) The inside pin is fine. The cable just seems really loose. Though the other cables have the same effect.
2)I dont have the skill.
3)Why should I waste any money if It is under warranty?
And usb otg should come at least once, as the tab does charge once maintained in a specific condition.
And As the tablet charges when its connected to a pc, its not a problem of bad usb port

I didn't realize your tab was still under warranty. Nevertheless, the fact that the cables fit loosely suggest that the housing is not in good condition and the pins, in turn, while not damaged, make poor connection (to wit, the tab charged only if held in a certain position). If the tab consistently charges while connected to a PC, then you're right, the fault lies elsewhere, like a jarred battery connector, or the other USB end, or the charger itself. This, however, leaves the OTG issue unexplained. Warranty seems your best bet for the moment, however. Good luck.
I don't think it can be a mistake of mine, so Asus will definitely have to replace it.
Thanks for your support though!

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers.
I have installed kids and then smart switch.
My old note 4 that was defective shows up in Windows but the replacement shows as 'unknown device'
I tried safe mode to un install drivers and different USB ports.
Is my device defective? Any ideas?
Thanks!
Maybe try going to developer options and checking if usb debugging is turned off. Try turning it on. Try a different usb port. Try to switch between different usb modes in the notification area when connected. Last but not least factory reset your phone in recovery mode and try connecting it after.
I am experiencing the same problem but I have another problem as well. My phone is an unrooted Galaxy Note 4 running 5.0.1 w/ VRU2BOG5 build. I have tried just about all the USB ports on my computer and get the same result, "unknown device". I have uninstall and reinstalled kies and the associated drivers and still get the same result. I have factory reset the phone and still the same. I was even able to do a firmware upgrade and initialization via kies and still the same problem.
The other problem I am faced with is I can not seem to get any OTG cable to work on my device. Could this be hand in hand?
I am not sure if you (the OP) have noticed but when you installed kies, have you gotten an error for your ethernet controller under other devices in your device manager?
I really like the phone but if I can't 1) root it or 2) transfer data via the usb port (especially through the OTG cable), the phone is useless to me. Any help would be very appreciated.
The USB port may be defective. I replaced mine on my note 2 myself for cheap. But if the phone is still under warranty let them deal with it. You guys tried different cables/computers?

I am not entirely sure it's a bad port but could be. On my note, everything besides a flash drive via OTG cable works. Oh and the computer but it will connect to my laptop. I dunno I'm about to sell the phone.

I need all the luck I can get My computer has had issues before but it has since been fixed. I can hook any other device to it with no issues. As far as phones go, I'm not entirely sure which one I want. Guess it doesn't matter much since not many can be rooted.
