I just got a Xperia ZL today, I am totally new to Sony. So please any and all advice is appreciated.
I want to Root my phone and install custom ROMs. Please steer me in the right direction as to what is the easiest and safest way to do this.
I have been reading through the forums and found this method to Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2390419. But how do I check to see if my device is on the latest .244 fw? Is this the build number? Because my build number is 10.3.A.0.423.
Please advise if this is the best method to use.

Hello.
Your firmware (.423) is the firmware before the latest firmware (.244).
In .244, Sony fixed the exploit and it is no longer rootable with the one-click method. Instead, you have to use the method you linked.
However since you are on .423, you can root using the easy way..using one-click-root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327472
Once you have root, you can then use OTA to update to .244, and root will remain.

I haven't installed any custom rom because I feel the stock rom is pretty nice.
For info look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2153167
Topic is for Z but same goes for ZL, just search for corresponding things.

I think you need to clarify a bit more what do you want to acheive, since having root on a stock firmware is one thing and having custom rom is another.
For a starting hackable system you can have a look at cyanogenmod for ZL.
Or didn't I understand correctly what do you mean by a custom rom?
ROOT/CM/ROM

First, thanks for looking yourself.
Second, take a look in this thread once you have unlocked your bootloader, you will loose your bravia engine and with that you wont be able to have the "real" stock firmware ever again.
With the backup, you can restore your phone to full stock and with bravia engine.
I'm in a similar boat, I rooted mine but before I start unlocking and flashing, I'd like to make a backup of the current state of my phone.
How can I make a complete phone backup (with all partitions)? I was thinking of using Nandroid, but as @einfachgaer mentioned, making a backup of the TA partition is one of the steps to take. If the TA partition needs to be backuped seperately, I suspect a Nandroid backup is not enough (it only backups /system and /data, without a ZL-specific patch?) as I want the backup to be a complete package of the phone's NAND, including the TA partition and any other (device/manufacturer-specific) partition that may be in there. cat /proc/partitions shows 27(!) of them.
So, I'm looking for a full phone backup without initially installing any custom recovery, as I think the original recovery is part of the current phone's current state and I would like to make a backup of it.
Can anyone recommend a backup method that doesn't require overwriting the phone's current configuration and will allow me to get to my exact current phone state?
I now asked this question here, here and here and here as well, I'll be editing those posts to reflect the correct information when I get it.
*edit*
Perhaps 'nanddump' and 'nandwrite' from MTD-Utils (Updated download link) are suited for a full RAW Android device NAND backup of all partitions, even those with unreadable filesystems (bootloader) and/or additional (hidden) data beyond a filesystem?

I have recently flashed my Xperia S to a Global official release of Jelly bean 4.1.2 using flash tool.
However, there is one software much needed for me, called "proxyDroid".
The wifi Network in my campus is proxy protected and this app is necessary to allow all apps to use general proxy settings.
However, this app wants my phone to be rooted before installing it.
i googled about "How to root Xperia S with JB 4.1.2" and found doomLord's page with prerooted version of JB,
But the instructions were too complex for a first timer like me.
Here's the page:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2302631
Kindly simplify it for me, or please let me know if there's a simpler way to root my phone. I do not want to brick my phone so I am not taking any chance on things I don't understand.
Please, provide necessary guidance.

What is exactly rooting of phone? Do I void my warranty if I root my phone? If yes, can I un-root it to restore warranty later?
Is there chance of bricking the phone?
In your tutorial your first lines are,
Root jb for locked bootloader
Sooo many people just asking the same question. Its simple!
(this is currently the only way for LB)
You need ics installed, rooted with cwm

Unlocking bootloader on my phone is allowed. Do I still need to follow the same tutorial?
What is LB? (locked bootloader?)
I don't have ics installed, I have official JB 4.1.2. What is cwm? How I root with it?
I have this idea
Can I still factory format to stock OS from settings?
I can follow doomLord's guide here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2302631 if yes.
Also, what does he mean by "make sure that the /system partition is unmounted, i have noticed that in some kernels the /system partition remains mounted"? How do I check it?
Also how do I reboot my device in recovery mode?
Thanks

I understand that I might be asking too much. But I have flashed my phone recently. Just tell me if doing factory reset is safe for me or not? I'll take it up from there.

All the steps in the DooMLoRD pre-rooted ROM thread are safe if you follow them. I know because I followed them and my phone is fine, dandy and, best of all, rooted.

Hello everyone, so AT&T updated my phone and foxfi used to work just fine for hotspot but since Android 4.3 I can't so I need to root. I've seen a few threads in this site on some roots but don't get much info about them. How can I root my GS3 running 4.3? I've never rooted in my life so I'm making sure I do this right the first time . If anyone can please help me get the proper root for my GS3. I'm not wanting all these custom roms and stuff. - Has Anyone had an update to this yet? I am having the exact same issue where several things no longer allow me the permissions I once had. At&t sent out an update that kept popping up on my screen every five minutes for like 2 days so I Finally upgraded and I do not like the new version.
- I am especially ticked that they removed the option to hide Applications now. I use my phone for work and don't need clients and coworkers having easy access to personal apps and data since I collaborate on my phone quite a bit in meetings, plane rides etc.where my phone is passed around. So any new app I try to add also requires root access to do the trick and combined with not being able to use pdanet+ or foxfi to tether I have a big need to root now. I tried to root using GalaxyS3RootATT.zip - which did work on an earlier version of 4.2 but only ended up wiping my phone after the 4.3 update (i think this was the 2nd update for the same OS version 4.3) but it did install super user. However root test fail to show that it is properly rooted. Very Frustating and VERY nervous about Bricking my phone so I want to make sure its done right. Ive only rooted a handful of times every couple of years when I get a new phone and the process seems to change constantly due to so many codes and manufacturers and models and carriers etc.
Anyway please help ASAP. Thanks

I am trying to root my phone to be able to run 4.4 on it and have followed the steps to root it using odin3 and CF-Auto-Root but once i get back to my home page and try to use superSU I get an error message stating "Unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped." along with "Security information An application attempted to access system on your device without authorization. This attempt has been blocked".
Sorry if this is an easy fix or i left out important information but i would just like some help getting off the gound

You need to install a custom recovery in order to flash a custom ROM. You don't necessarily need root to load a custom ROM. Are you running a stock 4.3 ROM?

The 4.3 OTA installs Knox without checking if you want it or not. Fortunately there are ways to remove it after the fact. Most suggestions I have seen recommend using CF-AutoRoot, updating SuperUser, and then going into SuperUser to disable Knox. You don't need root to install custom ROMs but as far as I know you need it to remove Knox. Removing Knox seems to be necessary in order to get the custom recovery required to flash custom ROMs.
|Guide|How-To| Root & Install Custom Recovery for 4.3 Update
[CWM][4.2.2/4.3/4.4] DE-SAMSUNGNIZER Script V5.0.0 - Clean all unneded Samsung Crap contains scripts to remove Samsung bloat and others that seem to just remove Knox.
I was about to offer no comment on the ROM to which you linked because it is in the Verizon forum, but then I noticed the d2lte in the description. My understanding is that d2lte is good for all US SGS3 variants. (Gummy says this in it's forum.) Maybe you can get around using a custom recovery with some ROMs, but the Gummy ROM comes as a recovery flashable zip. So, it looks like: root, remove knox, install custom recovery, flash rom.

From reading quite a few ROM threads I have learned that the updater scripts have code that indicates which devices they will work on and will cause the install to fail if you are trying to flash an incompatible ROM to a device. Sometimes these scripts have not been updated to reflect ROM compatibility with devices and editing the updater script will correct this. This is best verified in the ROM thread. Something to check for yourself before posting would be that you are using a compatible ROM version. The d2lte files should work with any of the US variants. If you downloaded one of the older files there is then the need to make sure it works with your device, unless you are confident about editing the script.
Other possible causes of your error:
1) it could be that the zip is on the external_sd and the installer expects it on the internal
2) you have a bad ROM download

Root problem solved
I have an AT&T S3 SGH-i747. The problems I had with rooting was all related to Knox, unfortunately I had no way to get rid of Knox.
Please follow the web link and follow all the steps in order. The short version of the steps is you install the TWRP recovery using Odin, then boot back into recovery , install SuperSU and then Knox removal script via recovery. After that enjoy whatever custom ROM you want. I'm running the KitKat 4.4 now :good:
As a note getting to the correct download link can be a pain due to the bait and switch of the "download now" button with other shareware apps but the links provided to lead you to the correct zip files.

They've closed alot of the bugs that were being used for the previous root methods.
IF you don't care about your data, what you CAN do is to revert to an older FTF, root, backup your TA partition, then go from there... it's a pain... but it works.

I don't understand why someone would post bad directions like that. Also they are very similar to Doomlord's own instructions for rooting. He says to flash an old exploitable kernel and then run his exploit and then flash back.
Anyways, your method says to downgrade to .67 firmware, and I can't find that anywhere. Can I downgrade to .423 firmware and use Doomlord's root method instead? Should be the same results, right?
Also, is step 8 necessary? Do I have to flash back stock recovery or can I keep CWM?
And finally, using this method, how will we keep root when 4.4 finally arrives?

Thanks, It worked without any problem.
I also wouldn't take the risk to flash the Kernel of .423 over the .67 firmware.
Yes they are both Android JB 4.2. But you never know.
About 4.4, we will have to wait what will be the available methods.

yeah. that kernel method worked for previous firmware. now it won't work. and yeah you can downgrade to any rootable firmware. u are doing this just to backup TA so that you can lock BL. you can keep that advanced kernel. but you wont get OTA updates, better to flash stock kernel and lock your BL. when 4.4 arrives, if no rooting kit is available, you've to unlock BL, install advanced stock kernel which has custom recovery and install SU and flash back stock kernel and lock your BL
After you've rooted, but before you actually unlock your bootloader... if you install the dual boot recovery, you can make a backup of your TA partition information via TWRP as well as by using the other method... (do both to ensure you can revert)...
And then after you unlock your boot loader save ANOTHER TA backup... name them so you know which is which so you can re-lock your TA if you choose if you're running a stock kernel/rom and want the DRM keys back... but that way you don't have to go through the pain for unlocking each time...

Only had one small issue with the flashed zip/stripped FTF messing up the XZDualRecovery settings, but deleting xzdr.prop and rebooting fixed it.

if u go with method, u have to download those stripped files every time when new firmware arrives. which is kinda boring to download those huge files. whereas in that unlocking BL method, u download only kernels with recovery which is just 15 to 20MB
In the ever changing market of roots and exploits I believe it would be nice to have a device specific rooting "poll". the other reason I'm starting this thread is because I can't seem to root my phone tried towelroot but it says my device is not supported. Im running stock 4.2.2 and I want to root mainly so I can back everything up before I custom install stock 4.4.2
Towelroot works for 4.4
Being on 4.2.2 you could try the Safe-Root method depending on your actual Firmware. Otherwise you have to stick to rooting through CWM.
All methods have their threads here. Please read them.
You could also backup your data with adb without root and after update restore this adb backup to your device. So there's no need to root before installing custom 4.4.2
CWM all day! so fast and easy to do plus it's easy to unroot.

http://www.s4miniarchive.com/search/label/Root Find your model version and read the instructions, you won't regret it.
4.2.2 can be rooted using Kingo. Doesn't trip knox.

Hello my friends.
I'm the owner of the Xperia S with awful interface. I know that Sony not going to release the next update of firmware, so I have a question for you. I'd like to have Android 4.4.2 or although 4.3.
I know that i have to Unlock Bootloader that I have to flash my device but unfortunately i have this option locked (attachment). My question is: is there any way to update my Android without bricking my phone?
I will be grateful for any help
No. You're stuck with Sony's 4.1.2, or maybe CM9, of you want.

There is a old Cyanogenmod ROM for locked bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2593806
Read carefully, I didn't test it and of course there is always a chance to brick your Phone!
Thank you so much for this link. But i don't understand how I can flash it to my phone. Can someone explain this for me in step by step guide?
I used to flash phone once long time ago my SE k800i and it was a way easier than this, just connect phone and overwrite 2files. This process is more complicated and I could use some help.

Sorry i have unlocked bootloader, so I can just take a look for you...
I thought you could just flash it via Recovery (like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvD6ZCENlJA with the option apply update from external storage or so...)
If that is not working you can try this:

There is a guide on post #2
One possible way to root your Phone:

One possible Recovery for your Phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2308493
Just search for DooMLoRD
Thank you for helping me.
I decided to use first option - install it via Recovery. But there is a problem - Xperia S doesn't have pre-installed recovery. So If I want to do this I need to install custom recovery. But I need root my phone to do this. I could use Doomlord method but it is only for 6.2.B.1.96 firmware, unfortunately I have 6.2.B.0.200.
I know the steps that I have to do:
1. Root my phone.
2. Install custom recovery
3. Flash ROM via Recovery.
But I can't root my phone because of firmware. What now?
@edit:
I found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327473
It was tested on Xperia S (LT26i) {FW: 6.2.B.0.200} [v16 onwards] and it "WILL WORK on both LOCKED & UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER".
Is it right solution for my problem?
