GPS inaccuracy - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Just got the one a couple of days ago and I noticed that in things like Ingress and Maps, the GPS is not quite accurate. So much so it is 50 to 150+ feet off. Even standing still, the GPS will think I am moving.
I have everything enabled in the Location settings, is there something else I should look at??
Thanks.

My GPS is working fine so far. It's accurate to about 10-15 feet, which I think is par for phones. Are you using a case with the phone that could be distorting the GPS signal? Metal roof, anything of that nature?

Nope, no case on the phone. I noticed the problem while riding in the car. I wouldnt think it would be an issud there since my wifes S4 works ok in the same pkace.

Just opened up maps now, it's got me about right...technically has me outside the house, but I am close to the wall so /shrug. You might want to check the sprint/att/tmobile forums in case it's just a quirk of the HTC One itself but I can't say I've seen any trouble in the short time I've been using it.

How accurate is the EVO GPS

I have a Hero and have tried several running apps and some are better than others.
I like RunKeeper http://runkeeper.com/home and find it to be ok for accuracy but not perfect. On a clear days it works well but cloudy days its a bit off. I don't think the accuracy issue is due to RunKeeper I think it is the phone. However other apps are terrible for accuracy like Cardio Trainer which shows 4.3 miles for a 5K/3.11 miles.
Here's a map showing what it looks like on a cloudy day using RunKeeper
http://runkeeper.com/user/d12bn/activity/26716842
Showing 3.36 miles for a 5k/3.1 miles measured with a Garmin and my car.
Its not bad but my Garmin would still be very accurate on the same day. So just wondering if the EVO GPS is any better?
Thanks JB
Personally, my gps is spot on. If it says X is 5 miles away, I only have +/- .1 tolerance.
I have not tested it over distance like this, but I do know that I've seen my GPS as accurate as 4m.
I havent tried mine over several different weather conditions but when I have tried it I can watch the little arrow move from the front of my house (facing east for example) to walking around to the back yard and facing another direction... Even if I turn it on in the house, or somewhere else, it always places me w/in the same 1/4 of a block -- I know that's not a scientific measurement, but all I'm sayin is that for me, the times I've tested it, it's pretty dang accurate... Also, I havent tested it over distances when runnin (it is accurate in the car)... But I think I'll give it a shot now that you mention it
Simply better than any other GPS for me so far. I agree on couple of meters difference.
Thanks
Cool let me know what you find. I can say using my Hero for navigation while driving works great. However using it to measure walking/running may have to be more accurate, 3 tenths of a mile short or long makes a difference at the end of 3 miles.

Mine has been accurate down to 3 meters. Walking down to the park (about 1.7) miles is pretty much spot on in google maps. I just have to tap the little blue arrow a couple of times to "improve" the location before I start walking or driving anywhere.
Longest I've tested it is about 17 miles driving. It was off by about .1 as a prior user stated.

just swap sims and you're good to go.
I'm really considering this as well because both the Note 2 & 3 are huge and clunky while working out.

I used to use one of these while working out. Locked the screen and disabled the Changing of tracks with the volume rocker. That way there were no accidental track changes. I lost the Nokia bluetooth adapter and have ordered this as a replacement.
The main reason I like this style of bluetooth adapter is that it allows me to use whatever set of headphones I want to. I just wish someone would make one with Apt-X.

Why not just get an armband?
http://www.amazon.com/COD-TM-Armban...qid=1381135984&sr=8-1&keywords=note+3+armband
Or one of those runner waist packs?
Pair with some bluetooth headphones and go.
Whichever arm that you put that arm band on would definitely get "jacked" after running with that on.

I found the pedometer pretty interesting so far. I did a 1.5 mile walk yesterday and used both S Health and Runtastic for tracking. Both apps were spot on for distance, but were off by 50 calories of each other. So runtastic tracked my distance by GPS and S Health tracked my distance by steps. I was impressed.
I also like the fact that you can turn off the screen and it will still track your steps.
I use fitbit for weight tracking, myfitnesspal for calorie intake and runtastic for walking, cycling and heart rate monitoring. While S Health is more nicer looking and has everything rolled in one, I don't think I'll use other then for the built in pedometer. But I'm thinking on buying a BodyMedia Link for a more precise daily calorie burn.
Also I can't get S Health to detect my runtastic heart monitor. It says it will work with the Wahoo monitor which, I think is just a rebrand.

How much does it drain the battery to leave it on all day? I used the "Moves" app which is kind of like S Health without all the excessive features (basically just a pedometer) and my battery drained around 20% more every day, so I stopped using it. (On a Nexus 4 though, thats why i'm wondering what it is on this phone).

Thats good. I guess thats why samsung has all those sensors on the phone.
I'll probably get some cheapo MP3 player to jog with, possibly a iPod Nano. Granted I've jogged with my Note 2 before, it just becomes kind of a chore to hold and run with.
Been using a spibelt (http://www.spibelt.com/) for years (g1, galaxy vibrant, g2x, s3) and found that the Note3 just barely fits (i dont' have a case yet) in the big pocket of the 2 pocket style belt. No bounce at all while running.

My gear works quite well thank you.
It does, but the problem is that it needs a phone to make it "smart." I believe it's not self sufficient.
I'm not knocking it, it's a great effort. But, it's hard to ignore that it is more of an accessory to the galaxy devices, rather than a stand alone smart watch.
I was getting one myself when I first heard about it, but seeing it's limitations, I don't think it is justifiable to shell out 300 for it.
Granted, the gear 2 will be just amazing. Look at the note series... The 2nd and 3rd revisions are just awesome.

[Q] Gps Compass

While using the GPS STATUS app, I keep noticing the compass jumping all over the place. Thinking it might be some interference from inside the house, I took the Note outside, only to have it do the same thing. I CAN get a gps location lock, moreover.
I recalibrated the compass, but it's still doing it. It usually fluctuates (even just sitting on the blacktop road (I live on a side street that barely gets any traffic)) between 3 degrees direction wise and 1-2 degrees on the magnetic field.
Is this normal?

Anyone else have awesome Bluetooth range?

My bluetooth range on the 360 is pretty amazing to me. My phone is downstairs in my room and I receive notifications upstairs in my kitchen. That is about 40ft in a straight line with the floor and one wall in between. Anyone else with amazing range?
Ps. I have the pebble steel band on mine.
On a side note: I broke the back on one of mine. Not sure what to do. Should I call moto to see if they will fix it?

I noticed that too. The bluetooth range is excellent. Also, I love how it warns you that you may have forgotten your phone when you do get out of range. That has spared me at least 2 missed calls this week...
Huh, weird....mine ends up disconnecting when I leave my phone in the room and I go into my office or vice versa. It's a one-story house, so mabye 30 feet away? But I've noticed that it tends to disconnect from my phone at times even though on the Android Wear app on my phone it still says connected. But I end up not getting any notifications or can't use the "OK Google" feature. I have to either reconnect it or reset the device.
I've noticed range is better on the nexus 5 than the lg l90. Much better.

I have a Nexus 5 as well...I wonder if it's because I'm running Cyanogenmod. The only reason I did that is because my battery runs a lot better than with the stock Android for some reason. Usually it'd be down to about 30% by mid day with bluetooth on and I tend to have 15 hour days at work.

yeah the range is very good.
Seems great so far. I'll be about 40 feet away and I'll still be able to reply to text messages. So far, in fact, that I'm wondering how far it takes for me to get a notification that I may have forgotten my phone.
Should i get in contact with Motorola? Today mine's disconnect twice while my phone was in my pocket. I was thinking of contacting them either way since I've found about 4 dead pixels.

Wait, it warns you that your phone is out of range? Are you talking about the little cloud icon, or an actual warning? I never got a warning, so I downloaded Wear Aware, but if the 360 will do that out of the box, I must have missed something.
As for the thread topic, I noticed the excellent range on my first night. I can leave my Nexus 5 in my bedroom on the charger, and I can use my watch from practically my entire house. I don't live in a mansion or anything, but it's still a rather large 2-story home. At first, I thought Wear Aware wasn't working, but I tested some voice searches, and sure enough, I was still connected. I really didn't expect that kind of range! Heck my wi-fi barely covers my entire house! (Although, I still do get the 3-4 random disconnects per day, where Wear Aware will show an alert when I'm literally within arm reach of my phone.)
I also would like to know if the watch does this without a 3rd party app.
I had to install an app to alert me when it is disconnected.
I was at a subway with my friend and we were testing out the Pear app. I told him to keep walking away until bluetooth went out. He went all the away into the bathroom and it still didn't go out. I'm guessing 20-30 feet range.

Erratic GPS

I have taken my smart watch 3 running with me quite a few times over the last 3 weeks since i bought it, and i seem every time, to get some quite odd gps issues. Tried with both runkeeper and ghostracer and both are the same, which leads me to think it is the watch.
When tracking a run, the watch just all of a sudden, seems to lose GPS, no signal what so ever. Sometimes it picks it back up after a few minutes, sometimes it doesnt come back at all.
I have tried a factory reset on the watch and that didnt help at all. I have also tested this in both built up and open areas, in areas that the GPS diag tool in the dev menu says that i have access to 19 satellites, so should have no issues with GPS, but constantly do.
Is this something others have experienced? Or could this be a faulty watch?
i have had similar yet different experiences with mine.
two nights ago, had both runkeeper and ghostracer running at the same time standalone. at 3.6km ghost racer stopped tracking GPS yet runkeepr was fine.
then last night at 2.9km ghostracer again stop tracking gps. but i forgot to run runkeeper at the same time so no knowing if software or hardware.
its an annoying problem to say the least. i have mentioned this on ghostracer Google+ page.
Same problem here. Love this watch as a running watch when it works. Guess I need to start look for a normal running watch that allows me to play my music from the watch. Love the freedom of not having a phone with me.

I find the ghost racer app buggy as hell on my watch, works fine on my phone but every time i go stand alone it craps out it's got to the stage i only run it if i have my phone with me.
I have had no problems what so ever with Runkeeper so this is what i have been using on my watch can't wait till other devs get there act together and start making there apps work as stand alone on android wear.

GhostRacer works fine for me: better to to get 4 "steps" of gps signal before starting the run.
I have had the same awful experience since I did few test runs in the past 3 weeks with the Smartwatch 3. I tried the Endomondo and RunKeeper. both can be running stand alone on the watch. The GPS signals were easily lost and could not recover for a long period during the run. It seems to be a problem of the watch, not the apps. I had a 20k run, which ended up with only around 10k was tracked.
In the last trial taken yesterday with Endomondo, which is nice with the GPS signal strength display. I had turned on airplane mode this time. It did have some improvement. The GPS signal lost after 5k run, but I hadn't been aware of its loss until 10k. Then I click open the app and made sure the GPS signal was recovered before resuming the run. It then seems fine until end of run that totally tracked 21.2k out of the 26.3k run.
It's really a frustrating problem to have a runners' watch without proper GPS tracking.
same
i have the same problems with my watch.
after 5k the ghostracer app did not update speed and distance anymore. but the app itself was still okay because the heartrate was still changing and accurate. after 5 k more it suddenly picks up signal again. but of course all running data is useless.
after the issues with the bluetooth and google play music - now the next issue which destroys the actual reason to choose this watch.
to have a stand alone running smartwach with offine music and gps without the need to take the phone with me.
i wonder if this is a software (firmware/wear) issue and can be fixed with the next updates or in the worst case a hardware/design issue.
what do you think?
Same issue here with Endomondo. I haven't tried any other apps but for the last few days I'm getting erratic signal that will randomly stop working and usually never comes back. Really frustrating and hoping it's able to be fixed.
I tried using Ghost Racer and I am still getting constant GPS drop outs that don't come back. I've run the same course before issues cropped up with no problems at all.
Anyone have any additional thoughts on this? It's getting to be very annoying when your full run isn't tracking. Thanks in advance!

AW 5.1.1 and GPS
Hi,
I have tried it (7.2km, mainly in forest) and the GPS signal has been pretty accurate.
Before the update I had a lot of issues on the same route.
So there is a chance that it is finaly fixed.
It seems that the GPS problem has been solved with the 5.1.1 update. I have had a run of 15.6K with Endomondo. It logged exactly the same. But unfortunately, the workout data was lost without being synced with phone app as usual, but the GPS problem definitely solved.
Well I guess I'm an unlucky one. My GPS has always been unreliable - not just inaccurate, but unreliable in that it will stop working part way through all of my runs. I'm lucky to get 2-3 miles before it stops working. I've tried Runkeeper and Ghostracer and it does the same on both. On Ghostracer it shows the GPS "bars", and I wait until it gets 3-4 bars before I run, then as I run it will gradually lose bars until it loses signal completely. I run on open streets with no trees or other obstructions to the sky so not sure what's going on. I upgraded to 5.1.1 in hopes that would address the issue but no such luck. Today I'm on my third ph call with Sony trying to get it RMA'd for repair.
I have yet to run without the GPS losing signal. Tried Runkeeper and Ghost Racer. Usually signal does not return. First 2-3 miles usually works pretty well. Any distance longer I lose signal. Might be heading back to Amazon before my 30 days are up.
Too early to be happy on the 5.1..1 update. The same GPS signals loss issue has come back again since the 2nd trial run. The signal lost around 3k, never coming back most of the time. Still no idea what's getting wrong.
I've been having GPS dropout problems for the last week and a half, ever since installing 5.1.1. According to someone on the Ghostracer App hangout, the problem is caused when the watch gets wet. I don't know if that's really the case, but yesterday before a run I put a layer of duct tape on the back of the watch and didn't have any problems. My previous three runs before that were all mis-recorded because of GPS dropouts.
I'm going to keep putting the tape on to see if it's really a solution.

Tried the duct tape on the back. First longer run that I did not lose GPS. Not really loving the solution putting duct tape on every time I run.
It's absolutely the wet (sweating) causing the dropout. I had tried the duct tape approach, but still experienced the dropout after several kms, which might be due to the wet surrounding. Then I wiped the moisture off the duct tape, and the GPS signal was locked again immediately. The signals were most accurate when I simply took the watch off the wrist and held it during the run, that effectively kept it away from my sweating skin. What a design from Sony!
I'd better try the wristband approach before I decide to dump it!
So, if the moisture is really effecting it, then it would imply that the antenna is mounted in the rear, or grounded to the case. The extra moisture (conductivity from the body salts) against the case means that your body is now able to attenuate (or ground out) the antenna, thus disrupting the signal.
Noting this, i think i may take some flat clear acrylic hobby paint, and give a good layer to the back, and see if it helps. The paint should provide an insulating layer without really irritating the skin.. Can't really hurt to try..
