What's the difference between class? I see class 10 and class 4, class 4 is a lot cheaper then 10 but what's the actual difference? Does class 10 transfer files faster or something?
and also can anybody recommend a good screen protector? I had one come free with my case on eBay but it doesn't even fit the whole screen
Thanks all
Class refers to the minimum read/write speed in MB/sec. Reputable brands actually adhere to these speeds while others are relatively meaningless.
As stated above for SD cards.
And for screen protectors, get Xtreme guards, simoly looked amazing in my One X. Waiting for them to come in the mail for the S3 now.
Sent from my sexy white Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile.
Does it really matter though?
SD speed?
Depends on what you do with that card.
If it's a big card and you often transfer large files to and from it, transfer speed does matter.
If you record HD videos directly to your sd card and your card isn't fast enough your video might stutter or have artifacts.
If you put games on your SD card and those games depend on high transfer rates, you might get lag.
But since the S3 has at least 16GB of internal memory you should have enough space to put stuff that need high transfer rates to your fast internal memory.
A class 2 or 4 sd card should suffice for most people. If you need the high transfer rates though, you'll have to go with a faster card.
Cards get memory lag which means they slower to access files when they filled with a load of files, so ignore the class ratings because a decent quality Class 4 works better in everyday use than a cheap Class 10 even if it can potentially transfer faster.
And files for a phone aren't usually neatly lined up so easily the best value card is Class 6 or 10 SanDisk Ultra then you know your phone can handle anything you throw at it.

Ahh okay, I plan on watching movies and stuff I'll just go with the class 10 over the cheaper one I just wanted to know how it would affect phone use
I'm going to get this I think:

Look for a seller with a much higher feedback because there's a serious chance you could get scammed with a fake card there.
But if you find a genuine one that is a good one, but personally I'd spend a bit more for the 32gb card then you know you've always got enough space if your needs change.

People setup new accounts and build up a few hundred fake feedback pm more people are likely to buy from them, I mean I'm not saying by any means this is a scammer but just find another seller with feedback in the thousands to be more safe.
And the only way to tell if it's a fake is run a benchmark in your computer and check the card and packaging look real compared to pictures.
If you only want to watch movies a class10 is probably overkill. The problem is when you want to use the camera to record 1080p movies.
There is a difference between write and read speeds of flash memory like sd cards. They usually are pretty fast when it comes to reading but writing speed is another matter.
You should be fine with a good class4 card like one from sandisk.

what about writing to my internal and copying over to my SD if I need to?
Writing from your internal to your external memory will be as slow/fast as writing from a cardreader to your sd card. Depending on the writing speed of said card.
When your sd card is too slow for direct 1080p recording your suggestion is a valid way to record those videos without lag. Record onto the fast internal memory and then move it to the slower external memory when you need space on the internal one. The sd card will still be fast enough to play the video.
Would be annoying if you had to do that a lot, though. If that's the case you should spend the extra money for a faster sd card.
I have no idea how fast that card has to be. I never had a device that can record in 1080p. However, I'm using an htc hd2 and run most of my apps(including games) from my sd card and in the beginning even the OS. I never noticed any stuttering or lag that didn't come from the OS itself. I've been using sandisk class2 for that and moved to a bigger sandisk class4 recently. No decernible improvement other than that it's a little faster to copy files from my computer to my phone and back, now.
Those cards are rather inexpensive nowadays, especially when we are talking about only 16GB. Don't think about it too much. Just buy one and try. If you have problems with the speed, use it as a flash drive and get a faster card for your phone.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned this yet. But do not buy that card. That auction is for a SDHC card, our phones are only compatible with Micro SD(HC) cards. If you buy that card, you will not be able to use it in your phone. You will need to find a Micro SDHC card.
To be honest I can't even see me using the 11GB you get on the phone unless it's music, an 8GB would do me just fine but I'm going to get the 16GB just in case, I'm only really getting one for rooting

I'm in the UK, and I've got a question about the trident case too.
It has a screen that you put over the front, does this mean I'll have to detach the case just to use the phone? The otterbox case looks great and well worth the money after seeing an anchor get dropped without leaving a mark on the case let alone the phone

If you are in the UK, I think you should have a look to this people ebay, I buy everything from them, they now have a nice screen protector and various cases and battery covers (I personally take a lot of care of my phone), check this out:

Have a special look at the carbon fiber cover and also the privacy screen protector....
Some pictures of my galaxy with them on :
This was supposed to be the phone that compete with the galaxy s3 and I would have loved to buy this except what, no micro sd card lot? dang.... I love HTC phones and I'm so saddened that this phone doesn't have a card slot for me to expand its storage capacity. I just hate jumping over to the samsung side....
sorry if this was brought up before... but why didn't they put one in?

my point is i don't want a samsung, i love HTC phones. btw, i don't think the S3 is poorly designed.
well, hopefully HTC's next set of phones will have card slot. until then I'll have to keep my htc vivid which is actually a quite powerful phone, but the One X would have been faster and got a bigger screen.

Oh please, why do you need a bloody card slot? I have always used to use phones with one, starting with HTC blue angel with normal sd card, than HTC neo. I have had about 15 different phones, and each had a slot for a memory card. but I really appreciate HTC built hox like this. 32 gb is more than enough for me, I would even prefer 16gb if it would be cheaper.
I hated my Acer liquid and HTC Desire, because I needed a card for flashing roms.
HOX is really a perfect phone except of the battery. This is really the only point, why I suggest tu buy a new phone in the next to years (I hope HTC will follow Motorola in this case, so my next phone will be htc).
Really, HTC is the only major player, who makes phones with individuality right now. Iphone is boring, Sammy is good in making pieces of sh=t (galaxy s2 and original s were the only phones I adore) , LG is not available here in Germany and Sony is to Sony styled for me.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
You could buy the Sammy and you could buy a 64GB card and you'd get 14GB more than HTC give you (in practical terms). You could even buy a 128GB card for £100 but I wouldn't, I think you'll find failure occurs before 2 years is out, especially with the read write cycles generated by apps which use the SD as storage for data. Even then you'd have little advantage in real world usage and a pentile matrix AMOLED screen and nasty plasticy feel, cracks appearing in your battery cover and touch wiz.
The reality is, like it or not, storage is going in the cloud and HTC know it. I bet I could get 100GB of free storage in the next hour just by signing up with all the free services. Many of these have android apps as well so integration is almost seamless.

i guess because I don't have a data plan. I put all my vidoes, podcasts onto my phone. I have a 64gb card in my phone that has 8gb usable internal and together i have about 10 gbs left.
i guess if i ever get a data plan then hte HOX would be almost enough.
i agree with these guys, all my phones had an SD slot, i put the SD in and never touched or took it out again, that said i have 2000+ songs leaving me with out 8GB SD save, more than enough for pictures.

You'd better hope that 64GB card holds out! If you get a HOX on any network you'll get unlimited data. If you're PAYG then the reality is, with storage going cloud based you're going to find your choices dwindling fast over the next couple of years. Simple answer is that for the price of a 128GB card you could have data added to your plan.

To be honest, I don`t prefer to have so much stuff on my phone, you can store stuff for 2 weeks non-stop awasomeness with 32Gb. Don`t say, You have no possibility to update Your library every two weeks (ok, music will last longer, but podcasts and films are usually deleted after watching\hearing)
But for such a video-maniac, I would advice to buy a tablet (n7 for example), it`s much more adorable to watch videos on the bigger screen, and the battery life on the last-gen phones is terrible for long-time video enjoy.
But as a tip, you can use flash drives with hox, because some kernels support USB-Host functionality.

Well, i can proudly say that im a holder of my new 64 gig plus SGS3 phone, well technically its a 64 gig, its actually packing a 16 gig internal memory, modication made thanks to the sd2internaltosdexternal. i was able to swap my 16 gig to my 64 gig, and made my phone think that its actually using a 64 gig internal memory, never looked back, im a happy camper. I got the 64 gig mobile ultra class 10 memory card, its actually runing faster and smoother then the internal one does, ive tested it with speeds of 13-17+ write, read 35+, it averages thought, so yeah ure phone can support upto 2 terrabytes thanks to the SDXC chip support ure phone has (SDXC is new technology thats able to pack large amount of data into one single device big or small without loss of memory maximum capacity of 2 terrabytes), so regardless if u can where to have a 2 terrabyte microsd card which prob wont happen until 5 years from now, ure phone should be able to read it on the exception u can actually get it to work by partitioning ure sd card either in fat32/or extfat.
I had one... Then flashed cm10 and it corrupted it. Some roms don't format it so keep an eye out. Have a dead sd card now

just pop the card out put it in a usb reader and reformat it in windows its VERY unlikely that a flashing could actually "break" a sd card.

That is very much correct, flashing won't damage ure sdcard, it can corrupt the software to read it but easily fixed by reformatting through windows or third party format. Only time an sd card gets damaged and goes dead is when the sd card is unable to take excessive heat from ure phone, short circuits, or are fake sdcard which are lots of them out-there, all which will defect easily or through what I mentioned.
well not entirely true. usually the sd card can "take" more heat than the phone can (they are tough little buggers) IT IS possible to software damage them. they have an electronic "bit flip" inside some of them to set read only state.
We have these wee little 808 spy camera's we use on airplanes and rockets. some sandisk cards particularly can have this bitflip occur if power is "interupted" violently to the SD card. the card enter permanent read only mode and no one has figured out a way to fix them short of sending them back to sandisk for warranty replacement.
but this is highly unlikely to happen in an android phone in fact we think this is particular to the the way the firmware in the camera "accesses" the cards ie its doing it goofy which results in that bitflip or whatever it is
just get a reader and reformat the card you should be fine.

Again that's why I said that it's not likely that the phone will damage the sdcard if it's a lagit card..... Specially if it is a fake sdcard it will get damage easily under heat that the phone would be able to take.... Now flashing isn't known to damage sd cards but short circuits that a phone can make will.... It has enough to current to damage it.
again? again what? I said nothing to contradict anything you said (relevant parts) so again what?
and assuming you meant "legit" as in not "fake" sd cards thats not relevant no one was talking about fakes. once you enter "fake" territory all bets are off as to what might kill it

I have an unlocked Rogers Samsung Captivate Glide (i927R) running gingerbread (since Kies doesn't want to update it to ICS, and I haven't gotten around to rooting it), and it seems to be eating through SD cards. I had a 32gb micro SD card in there, but the phone decided to stop reading it after about a month and a half. Nothing else can read the card either; not my computer, not another phone, not even my camera can read the card. This is the second 32gb card it's happened to, and I'm starting to think that maybe it's my phone. When I have the card in the phone, it simply says "Unavailable" when I check under storage, although the phone can still read other SD cards.
Does anyone else have problems with this phone (i927R) killing SD cards? Am I simply just overloading the SD card, or is there some possibility that the phone is burning them out? Should I go for a 16gb card and see if it doesn't burn out, since smaller cards seem less likely to burn out?
Any help is appreciated.

The last one that burned out was a Transcend, and I don't remember what the first one was. but I don't think it was a particularly high quality brand. I will be sure to get a better quality card next time.
Do you think downsizing to a 16gb card would reduce the chances of a burnout?

It's a crapshoot man ... I've had kingstons bad out of the box at a couple of sizes, the flash drives I had die were 16gb Corsair USB3's and rated with high speed..
just make sure you get a class 10 and read up on some reviews ... Newegg is really great for it, lookup the brand, price etc. and then to buy it at a local store and have them price match...
I should really get in the habit of backing up all the information on my phone more than once i run out of space
*EDIT* .. The current one I use is G.Skill 32GB .. Lifetime Warranty. Comes w/ full size SD adapter.

Maybe wait for a tear down of the device to be certain?? Unless someone has the schematics to look it up for us right now...
Also wait till after June they may be bringing out a bigger storage version. And also the Gold 1 comes out then. I won't buy it if I can at least get 128GB and Gold. Otherwise not worth it.

I really really can't stress enough how true this is. I've been saying it for years, and nobody seems to see it. If you can connect whatever to the USB (such as an external memory or HDD) your need for an internal card is greatly reduced (as long as the phone has a bare minimum of storage space to make it serviceable).
But I was beginning to think I was the only one seeing that!

OTG is definitely useful and I learned that on my 64gb nexus 6 but it is no where near as convenient as having an sd card slot or higher internal storage amount.
I made use of it out of pure necessity but having foolishly bought another 64gb only device in my note 5 I decided I will never again buy a device without a minimum 128gb internal storage or an ext sd card slot.
its just not worth the hassle for me personally being forced to use OTG.

The lack of expandable storage is a deal-breaker, whatever anyone might say otherwise. You can simply remove the SD Card with ALL the data & backup from a phone that goes dead.
Would have also loved a IR blaster AND a larger battery, which I might add, could have been incorporated by raising the back & making it flush with the camera bump.
Current iteration of Oneplus with a dedicated Micro SD card slot (Not a Hybrid One), IR Blaster & a larger battery (4000+ mAh) would have destroyed every other phone.
cloud storage is far easier for backup than microSD.
4000mAh battery would make the phone significantly heavier and thicker
IR blaster is a niche product and cost-ineffective to implement since most won't use it.

Google photos for example. I would have bought the op3 even if it was 16 gb due to storing everyting in the Cloud.
I have an extra SD card, I'll try to cut it out to the size of a micro sim and see it it works, I don't think it will but with a try
will not work, phone only have two regular sim slots, not hybrid with sd card reader. opened, seen. probably what you'll get, stucked sd card in sim slot and voided warranty.
Ah bummer... just decided to get one but it's a dealbreaker for me too.
only for sim
oneplus 3 will only support dual sim no sd card
