Has anyone had any luck getting Verizon to keep their grandfathered unlimited data plan with this phone? I'll be attempting a phone call later today.

Buying it outright is about the only way I know of.

Tried it, wouldn't work. Same with Verizon's main page.
I'll be calling them now. Looks like I'll be pulling the "I've been a customer since 1996" card.

I think if you go to best buy you will have better luck keeping your unlimited plan. I have heard of a lot of people having luck that way.

It LOOKS like you can order the phone month to month on Verizon's website and it will keep your unlimited data. It didn't try to change my plan when I went through checkout. I didn't finish it though since I'm not quite ready to buy. I'm very tempted to order through the website and pick up in store today, though.
if you have existing upgrades on a family plan that isn't the main line, you can upgrade one of the add on lines, and have the rep reactivate the original phone that was on it.
then you'll call customer service and have them activate your new phone on your main line.
that's how i just did it.
When I upgraded from my iphone to my DNA, I called in to do it (didn't go to the store) and actually ended up upgrading 20 days early with no fee and kept my unlimited. I'm sure it was a screw up on their end but I paid 200 to upgrade and still have my unlimited.
I tried every trick I know of and was unsuccessful in keeping my unlimited data

that 100% false. managed a BBY Mobile store for 6 years, they have even less control.
I was able to keep my grandfathered unlimited but I paid dearly for it,as in full retail price!! And it was worth evey penny
detachment haonvig
I paid full retail to keep my unlimited.. if you do the math it is actually cheaper than going with a 5GB data plan over the course of the full 2 years when you would be eligible to upgrade again.
I ended up adding a line to my Family plan (both lines have unlimited data) and choosing the $30/2gb data package. Then I'll just put a dumb phone on the line, get rid of the 2gb data plan and pay the $10/month line fee for two years. Cheaper than paying full retail price.
I was successful in doing the Upgrade Shuffle.
Prereqs:
- At least two lines on a family plan.
- At least one line WITHOUT unlimited data.
- At least one line eligible for an upgrade (does not matter if it is the unlimited data line).
Process:
1) Log in to MyVerizon and go to "Upgrade Device".
2) If the device that is eligible for an upgrade is an Unlimited Data line, select "Transfer Upgrade" and transfer the upgrade to your line WITHOUT Unlimited Data. (If that device is already not Unlimited Data, skip this, and go to #3)
3) For the line WITHOUT Unlimited Data, choose "Upgrade Device".
4) Go through the store prompts, choosing your phone, any accessories, etc.
5) Optionally, choose "Ship to Store" (if you want your phone right now, rather than in a day or two), as well as entering the promo code "RMN30" (to save 30%, or ~$60 on the HTC One, from the phone price). I had a few issues doing both of these at once, but was eventually successful. If you can't choose "Ship to Store" after entering the coupon code, you may need log out and then start over from the beginning.
6) Activate the phone on the line WITHOUT Unlimited Data.
7) Go home, because a lot of Verizon employees seem to become *extremely* unhelpful after this step.
8) Log in to MyVerizon and select "Activate or Switch Device".
9) Choose the line that currently has your new phone (and no Unlimited Data)
10) Choose "Activate Device" and then "I am activating a device that I previously used with this account", and from the drop down menu, select the old phone that was previously on that line. Follow all of the transfer steps (for most phones, it is likely just "swap SIM cards").
11) Log in to MyVerizon and select "Activate or Switch Device".
12) Choose the line that DOES have Unlimited Data.
13) Choose "Activate Device" and then "I am activating a device that I previously used with this account", and from the drop down menu, select your brand new phone. Follow all of the transfer steps (for most phones, it is likely just "swap SIM cards").
14) Be happy that you now have a brand new phone, at a not-insanely-outrageous price, and still have Unlimited Data!
I did this earlier today without issue. I *attempted* to bypass half of these steps and have an employee do it, and they flipped their lid, so I did not buy from them. So buying the device online and doing the switches on your own seems to be your best bet.
I purchased this outright and had no troubles keeping my plan. The sales rep knew I wanted to keep my unlimited data and didn't bother me about signing a contract.

Currently in the midst of doing this exact same thing. Once you had activated the phone on the non-unlimited line, how long did it take for the website to register that the phone had been activated? When I try to switch the non-unlimited line back to its original phone, I just get this message from Verizon: "Your request cannot be completed. Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this MDN but have not activated it yet. You have the option to proceed after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance." It's been about an hour since I activated the One.
EDIT: Called Customer Service and they sorted it out straight away.

So does step 10 effectively cancel the data you added to the dumb line?
And what does the user of the dumb line have to do to get their phone to work again?
I'm going to use my mother's line; I'm 200 miles away and don't want her to be frustrated.
MY situation:
Line 1: Unlimited w/ eligible upgrade
Line 2: Dumb line no upgrade
I went to the VZW website, clicked transfer upgrade
Copped the one, requested it to be shipped to the store, they activated it
I had to call in because "swap device" wasn't working online...
put dummy phone back on dumb line and htc on line 1 w/ unlimited...

I'm switching over from Sprint to AT&T in order to get the new Winmo7 Phone, but I have no use for a data plan.
The phone has wifi.
My house has wifi.
My train was wifi.
My job has wifi.
My wife has mifi.
Someone said if you buy the Winmo7 phone, keep it for 30 days (paying data), and:
1. Take out the Sim card out and put it in a "dumbphone" (a RAZR), and make a couple of calls,
2. Call AT&T and tell them you want the data plan removed (do not mention that you have a smartphone, if they ask, say that you have a regular phone because you have lost your smartphone), and since they can't force you to keep a data plan on a phone that cannot use it, they'll remove it.
3. WARNING, if your carrier ever catches you electonically using their smartphone without the required data plan, they could proceed to automatically re-add the data plan on, with or without your notice. The worst case scenario would be they ensue an Early Termination Fee on you, and make you pay the difference of what you've paid for the phone and the retail price of it!
----------------------
Does this make sense?
Will Winmo phones have to be jailbroken so as not to report back to AT&T?
Will I be able to configure the phone to go to wifi, and not try getting AT&T data?
After I removed the data plan on Sprint, the phone still kept trying to get weather data, and I had to specifically ask for a "DATA BLOCK" to stop the phone from trying to get data!
Thanks
If you go into settings-mobile network
you can turn the data connection off. Your Phone will now only be able to do calls and texts.
I guess that would work, but I live in the UK and we aren't forced to buy a data plan, so I can't be certain.
The US carriers seem like a right pain in the backside with different frequencies and GSM vs CDMA etc. I don't know how you guys ever manage to get a fair deal when you are so locked down to one particular carrier.
You don't need a data plan if most places that you visit have a WiFi connection.

I was just on AT&T. This is all I will say, because I've been through this.
My Mom had a RAZR. She put her SIM Card in a BlackJack, and AT&T's system automatically added the data plan to her bill.
Your phone doesn't need to use data, they will know by the IMEI and other phone information that you have a smartphone. Everytime you phone connects to their network, it sends out the IMEI and the system will check that IMEI against you account. If you have a smartphone IMEI on a dumbphone plan, they will automatically add the smartphone packages to your account. You'll even get a text saying that you put you SIM in a smartphone yada, yada. The only way to have a smartphone without a data plan is to buy it outright off contract and activate it only with a voice plan on it.
There is no way to get around that. Swapping SIMs to make calls won't avoid that. Only modifying you phone IMEI and making it look like a dumbphone will do that. The process is automatic and happens instantly. Put you sim in, turn you phone on, turn it off... Too late. You have a smartphone plan on your account now.
My mom never used any data on her phone (no ActiveSync account setup, never used the browser... we checked for data usage - there was none), but AT&T simply told her if she puts her contract SIM in a smartphone, they have to add the data plan. She would have had to ETF her contract if she didn't want to pay for a data plan, so she went back to her dumbphone.
And to expand on some things, just in case you don't understand where I'm coming from:
Will Winmo phones have to be jailbroken so as not to report back to AT&T?
Will I be able to configure the phone to go to wifi, and not try getting AT&T data?

1. That's impossible. AT&T (any cell carrier's) network checks the IMEI/ESN of every phone that connects to their network the minute it connects. They will know exactly what type of phone you have. It has absolutely nothing to do with what operating system is on the phone. It can be a WP7, WinMo, Droid, iOS, iBangedUrMom device... They will still know exactly what type of phone you're using the minute it connects to their network via the phone's IMEI (and probably even the Serial Number, but they shouldn't even need that).
2. See #1. The phone doesn't have to access data for them to know that you're usin a smartphone on a dumbphone plan. All it has to do is connect to their network, and they'll know by the IMEI that you're trying to gib them. They will then alter your plans as required to suite their smartphone requirements (Add Data Plan, etc.).
BTW, when AT&T automatically adds data plans, they add the highest data plan. So, even though you don't use data at all, they will add a $25 2GB data plan, not a $15 200MB data plan.
And there's nothing you can do about it. It's in the contract and the requirements are pretty much universal across carriers here.
No carrier allows you to have a smartphone on a dumbphone plan (a plan without a data package) if you're under contract. The only way to do it is to buy the phone outright and have a plan without a contract. In that case, you'll just have to pay overages everytime you use data - which can easily (and quickly) exceed the costs of a data package.
And TBH, it's not even worth it to use a smartphone without a data package, even if you have WiFi in most cases. I use my HD2 as an iPod of sorts right now and there's no way it would be usable without a data package even though I have WiFi in most places I go. Missing an email I could have checked at a red light telling me soandso isn't feeling well and isn't going to be there, so I can spare myself the 45 minute drive is just not acceptable for me.
That bull**** about them just removing the data plan is false. That's what warranty is for and if you're a dumbphone user you should be getting a brand new dumbphone everytime you contract is up for renewal basically for free. Either you get a new one (they can give you a loaner phone until then, and it won't hurt since you use dumbphones, right?) or pay the price. They won't let you breach you contract. That would be negligent of them, and unfair to all of their other users.
If they do take it off (probably assuming you will take the SIM out) the system will automatically add it the minute you turn the phone back on - and the next CSR may not be as willing to break the rules (and none of them can just "change" the system).
thanks n8ter
lots of good advice
one thing though, I have a sprint Wm 6.5 Touch Pro 2 on sprint, with no data, and it works great! My contract ran out a year ago, though.
So you think if I buy a Winmo7 phone for $499 and try to join AT&T without a contract, they might allow it?
I asked Sprint and they said some smartphones like the Wm 6.5 Touch Pro 2 they allow to connect without data plan, but others like the droid they do not allow.
in any case thanks, I learned alot.

Yes, but you will be responsible for any overages.
I'm not sure how willing they are to put Data Stops on accounts/phones. I've never asked about that. My mom just ETF'd her account and went with Boost Mobile and got a Blackberry Curve instead.
Her AT&T bill went from $80/mo to $120/mo after she put her SIM in that BlackJack, and since her plan was altered her contract was extended.
Just don't try it. You're going to end up on the losing end of that battle.
That is why lots of people do like to buy phones outright. It does offer you a lot of flexibility and doesn't tie you to one carrier (though your phone's hardware may do that job for them ).

If you buy a WP7 phone from Amazon for $99 and choose $15 data plan, you'll be paying $99 + $15 x 24 (2 years) + taxes which would be close to or less than the off contract price ($499) of the phone alone. This is a better way IMO if you can have a contract because you can also enjoy data service (200MB a month) for 2 years.
Yikes, how the hell are those costs justified?! I only pay £10 per month,in UK including unlimited data & texts, and 150mins talktime. That's like $7 usd!

Um...what planet are you from? UK pounds are 1.61X US Dollars...which would mean that you are paying at least $16 dollars per month...which is still AMAZINGLY affordable for what you re getting...Although I doubt it is really unlimited data...STILL!
Here in Canada, you either buy a phone off contract and pay full price, or get locked in a THREE YEAR contract, with a minimum $50 plan, which has about 200 minutes, unlimited text, and 500MB of data...although, tethering is free...

150 Minutes of talk-time are pathetic.
Lots of people here (in the US) are getting rid of landlines and using mobile phones almost exclusively, so the cost of the contract isn't all that high when you consider the cost savings on the other side of the coin (a landline with a Nationwide Long Distance etc. is around $30-40 a month from a good service and not one of those crappy small companies).
450 minutes is a decent minimum for the markets here considering how much people have gravitated towards using social medium, email, SMS, and IM.
Data Prices aren't as great here as some other places, but tiered data plans do allow those who use very little data the flexibility to pay less for their small data usage, instead of being forced to get the max package just because they brought a certain type of phone.

Here couple of WP7 phones were launched at $99 from reputed sellers (Amazon / Newegg) with a contract. With holiday season upon us I'd say more such deals will follow, may be even free. How much do you have to pay to get a WP7 phone with £10 plan (contract or not)?
150 mins talk time is not enough for me. We have a family plan and my wife uses 2/3rd of the minutes alone. £10 != $7, as long as you are talking about UK & US currencies.

*conversion was not correct, but that's still insanely cheap!
the lady who bought her HD7 in line before I got mine on lauch-day, got hers without a data plan, they made her pay the un-subsidized price though
I love the new WP7 phones and am dying to get my hands on one. I had a question about getting one though. Right now I am on a family plan with AT&T running a G1 that doesn't require a data plan. I would like to keep the data plan off of my tab. I have my reasons but my biggest is that I am constantly surrounded by WiFi and even when I am out and about, data isn't a big deal to me.
So is it possible to get a new phone without the data plan? I fully am aware that I will need to buy out of contract (which I am fine with), I just don't want to pay 200 - 300 bucks a year for a data plan. Last Wednesday, I went in to pick up a Focus at an AT&T store and the girl told me she had to add a data plan. I walked out and am hoping you guys can help me out a bit.
Has anyone had any luck with buying a phone out of contract, turning off the network data and not getting billed for a data plan? I am up for getting either a Samsung Focus or the HTC HD7 (whatever works... but the HD7 might be a good option as well considering I want to move to T-Mobile once I get out of my contract in a year).
Believe me I researched this. I have a Fuze on AT&T that has no data plan. We were lucky to have gotten them when contracts did not require a data plan. Our phone is grandfathered in...
However, if you get a new smartphone, it will trigger adding a data plan to your account. I believe it goes by IMEI number and your account... your original phone's IMEI number is set to be excluded from this provision. Any new phone you get will cause the data plan to be added automatically. If you put someone else's SIM card in your old phone... they get a data plan automatically. You can buy a new smartphone and pay full price online somewhere... as soon as you put your SIM card in it, you'll have a data plan added to your account.
There's just no way (as far as I know) to get one of these new phones without a data plan. I will be biting the bullet and getting a new Windows phone sometime in the next couple of months...

This is exactly correct. As soon as your SIM is inserted into a new smartphone, although it may take time, you will be charged for a data plan. It registers the IMEI number of that phone on your account.
Damn. Well... can't say I tried. Thanks for the info gents.
Even if you could, I wouldn't suggest it
as far as I've been able to tell, you can't turn off your data connection fully
and this phone is always grabbing data, you'd be paying tons for data...much more than on a data plan

That's not true (At least in my case). As long as data is not initial from the phone, my AT&T Pure didn't trigger the automatic data plan (It did trigger once because I accidentally turn the data on and had to call At&t support to remove it).
For my X1a, I've been using it for almost 2 yrs on their cheap media-net plan without issue. Therefore, I suspect they could only verify smartphone that being sold by them (like the Focus I got recently). That's why I am looking at the HTC Mozart being sold in Austria (850mzh UMTS support)

Only on UMTS 1900 portion. I don't think it support 850
That's pretty lame... I have T-mobile and picked up an HD7. No data package and my HD7 is running flawlessly. The only feature that doesnt work with wi-fi is slacker radio and to be honest I don't need it...
I have another shared data plan question as if the world hasn't had enough. I'm currently on a plan with my parents but I'm planning on switching to a plan with my girlfriend in the future.
My current plan (grandfathered unlimited):
1 smartphone (Inc 2) - this is mine2 basic phones (Intensity II, Revere) - parents
This plan is eligible for an upgrade in July 2013, while my gf's T-Mobile plan is due for one this month. What I'm thinking is that she goes on a monthly plan on T-Mobile with her current phone until July. When summer rolls around, would it be possible to have my parents go on a new separate plan while I keep my unlimited AND add my gf onto this plan?
So basically my gf would upgrade one of the basic phone lines to a smartphone, probably tiered, and I could use that third basic line to upgrade my current phone and keep my unlimited data? The way I've read things is that one "line" can still be grandfathered while another on the same "plan" can be on the shared data. Although ideally both my gf and I would have unlimited I don't think that's possible.
Am I thinking through this correctly? And this is considering my parents don't need smartphones, and will most likely continue using the phones they have now. Any problems with my logic?
I am not the great and powerful, all knowing Oz, but if I understand you correctly, your parents would walk in and start a whole new account leaving you their phones and phone lines? If that is the case and that is possible through the carrier (big red I assume) then yes but they will have to leave the phone bill in their name. Just to simplify things we will call your line "line 1", dad's line will be "line 2", and mom's line is "line 3". You can use "line 2's" upgrade and activate it on line 1, but in doing so you will lose unlimited data on line 2. Next, bringing your girlfriend on line 3 and upgrading to a smart phone you will also lose unlimited data, leaving only line 1 with unlimited data out of the three. Hope that makes sense to you.
You could probably remove your line from your parents. My wife was on her brothers plan, and when we got married we transferred her number to my account. Though on a completely different topic, I don't really recommend doing this with a gf. Unless you are engaged to be married soon, who's to say before your contract is up you decide you don't want to be together. But I will stay off my soapbox. Just a thought though. But lines and numbers can be transferred from one account and carrier to another so no one has to lose their phone number. At least we were able to.

Sweet, I was just trying to explain to my gf what I thought would work and turns out I was actually pretty close. Thanks for confirming that for me.

I don't really recommend doing this with a gf. Unless you are engaged to be married soon, who's to say before your contract is up you decide you don't want to be together.

One more thing - any suggestions on something cheap for my parents to go on afterwards? Hopefully on Verizon seeing as they'll be keeping their phones. The shared data plans even just with basic phones comes out to $100 USD monthly. Maybe a monthly plan? I haven't checked that kind of service since I used Virgin Mobile like 10 years ago.

Straight talk maybe. Never used it, but I know people who have and like it.

I have a no-contract cellphone plan. My wife uses AT&T and has an upgrade available. She's perfectly happy with her phone and has no plans on changing. Essentially she's OK with wasting the upgrade opportunity and she doesn't want to leave AT&T. I wouldn't mind a getting the Galaxy Note II. She has the grandfathered $15 for 200MB data.
I was going to upgrade her phone and use it on my service (different carrier). Nevermind about unlocking issues with the Note II, I haven't explored that yet or any legality. I'm only curious about the cellphone contract part.
In the past, a direct upgrade from AT&T was simple. You upgrade, they send you the phone, that's it. Now it all seems different. You have to receive the phone, choose a new data plan, and activate the phone.
Third party providers seem even more strict. I have to do all the above, and am told if any of the following happens I owe back big $$:
You agree to repay $200 of this discount ($400 for smartphones, tablets, and netbooks) and authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of this amount if, you signed up for a 2 year agreement and during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, your carrier notifies us that the services you purchased have been suspended, disconnected, or deactivated, or if you return your purchase outside of the return and exchange provisions of our 14-day Satisfaction Guarantee.
Please note some of the reasons your carrier may notify us of a deactivation include if:
You transfer this equipment to another line of service after it is activated
You change your rate plan to a lower monthly service rate than was specifically required at the point of purchase
You deactivate texting/data features that were specifically required at the point of purchase
The new line of service activated with your order is used to replace a pre-existing account

1. Is it possible to upgrade, activate the phone, and put her SIM back in her old phone without problem if purchased through AT&T?
2. Is it possible to do the same with the phone if purchased through a third party provider like Amazon or Walmart? Does that violate the policy even though the line will stay active?
What I wonder is, what if she broke the phone and had to use her old one? Would they make her pay the contract breakage fee for accidentally dropping it and not being able to use it? Do they only care about the active line of service?
3. Some sites like Walmart allow me to select "Keep unlimited data: Don't make any changes to the data plan." Will they actually not touch the data plan, or will they automatically move it to a new 3GB more expensive one?
i have NO clue about the unlimited data plan, if you upgrade they may make you change it.
but as far as the phone, i got my note 2 as an upgrade and have gave it to my son soon after ( he is on a whole another account with his mother ) he popped in his Sim, factory reset the phone and he was good to go and i used my S3 for a while and now have another note, AT&T never contacted me saying "We see you are using your upgraded device on another account, we must charge you" i mean its your phone at that point. you can throw it in the trash if you so deem necessary.
the plan maybe a problem though.
Did you upgrade directly through ATT?

All u do is call them afterwards and ask them to revert u back to ur grandfathered plan
I work at radio shack and you could keep your unlimited data plan with us it gives us the option to skip past changing the plan. Tell who ever you do the sale with you plan on putting back the original since they can right down the esn and imei and not need to change anything in the account.

You can absolutely do this. You can go to any AT&T corporate owned store and tell them that you're using the upgrade to give as a gift, and you don't want the phone activated. They'll hand you the box and you're off. That's the EASIEST way. If they refuse, which they have NO reason of doing, ask for a manager, or go to another store.
Alternatively, you can do this over the phone, but there's more of a chance they'll **** things up. If they do, however, you just have to call back and have them put you back on the 200mb plan. It's an easy swap.

I have 2 unlimited data lines both have upgrades available. I was going to do the Best Buy trick by ordering one and having it shipped to my house and then throw away the sim that comes with it and put my old sim in the phone. Problem with this is Best Buy is only doing in store pickups for the Note 4 and the closest one is 3 hours away. Will the Verizon thing work? That is where you do an upgrade on someones line but when you get the phone you stick the sim from your other line into the phone?

Yes and no... Yes you can do this but u must keep a data package on that line you upgraded on for the duration of the contract, so not worth it in the end. I think with all the loopholes closed the option is to buy off contract which I'll be doing tomorrow morning.

Both of my lines already have data packages on them so it shouldn't be any extra. I upgrade Line 1 thru Verizon and when the phone comes in I take the sim card from Line 2 and put it in the phone. Then I do the opposite to upgrade the other line. Any flaws in that method?

If I'm understanding you correctly then yes there is a flaw. When you upgrade line 1 you will lose unlimited data on that line. You can put the sim from line 2 in the phone and then you will be able to keep unlimited on line 2. As soon as you upgrade line 2 you will lose the unlimited on that as well. What might work for you to keep unlimited on JUST one of the lines is: After you upgrade line 1 and switch sims to put the phone on line 2, then go and TRANSFER line 2 upgrade to line 1 and upgrade line 1 again. You will still lose unlimited on line 1 though.

Yes correct. Just confirmed what others have said, unfortunately you'll lose unlimited on one line
The only way to keep unlimited is to buy for full price.
The only way to keep unlimited is to buy for full price. (As I did). They send you new SIM card, inserted into the phone, that activates your new phone. If you insert your old SIM card (from previous phone) and try to activate
you will get an error > coll to 877**** (customer service). :crying:
So, no tricks with switching
Back when we were told that Verizon was going to start throttling unlimited data customers, I decided to see just how much data I could download in a month. I could have broken 10 TB if I was in an area with a better bandwidth. I suppose ~240GB's a day ain't too shabby. All directly to the phone, no tethering.

I think people fail to realize you can take the sim card out of the phone before it is turned on. Its the first thing I do and then put my old sim in it. I did it for my wifes line when I got her a new s4 on her unlimited line earlier this year. She still has unlimited now and I used the upgrade for her line. If you go to store do not let them turn on device for you. I did the same thing with my note 4 when it arrived yesterday, before inserting battery, remove new sim and insert old sim from previous phone. Phones boots up and says sim already active and no plan change. Plans dont go into effect until the sim card is activated. If that never happens then it never gets changed. The only thing I noticed changed was the actual term of the contract did renew as normal when upgrading.

In all fairness, it was a chore hitting 7.28 TB. I effectively started a download of 60+GB(all I had available on my SD card) from my Google drive, and set alarms to remind me to reset the download every 6 hours. After I hit 240GB the first day, I knew the total was going to be ridiculous. I'm waiting to get chastised by the "it's because of people like you!", crowd. I called Verizon to ask em if there were any better plans, and the rep mistakenly read it as 7.28 GB, and suggested a 10GB/mo plan(despite that costing 3.5x than the $30/mo I'm on for unlimited). She put me on hold after I pointed out the mistake, presumably to catch her breath, and show coworkers the ridiculousness. Pretty sure if there's a "watch list" with Verizon, I'm on it now.
Yea every time I call they say you know you can upgrade and I say only if I can use unlimited still. They look and say never mind. Most haven't seen my 100+ GB a month. I'd like to see what they say when your account is brought up
I went to Verizon store today and the reps told me that if I did an upgrade on another line and transferred the note 4 to my grandfathered plan line that I would lose the unlimited data plan after a month or 2. They said the plan follows the phone. They said the only way to keep unlimited plan is to buy phone outright - no upgrades. 2 reps told me the same thing. Are they just lying or confused or is this actually possible? I understand why they want to close the dumb phone data plan loophole but this seems to go beyond that. I asked them for something official that states this will happen. They could not provide anything. If is is true can someone point me to the official word from Verizon?

I don't have official word from Verizon, but I did the upgrade on my third (non unlimited) line (Transferred/ordered online). Once I received the Note 4, I took out the SIM and transferred the one from my existing phone to the Note 4. Been running 3 days without issue. Attached screenshot showing Note 4 with unlimited data. I'm into a new billing cycle since I activated the Note 4 and my contract end date still states "Month to month". I'll keep you posted if anything changes, but I did this same thing with my wifes phone last year and we are both still on unlimited.
I'm considering replacing my VZW MotoX with a Note4 because it looks like Best Buy is running a $99 Note 4 promotion (with trade-in). I have unlimited data on the Moto X and it is eligible for the upgrade. We have a second MotoX on the 2GB plan but it doesn't have an upgrade available yet. Here's my plan - transfer the upgrade to the 2GB Moto X and upgrade it to the Note 4. Then I put the SIM from the unlimited Moto X into the Note 4 before it is turned on (this would require a nano-to-micro adapter). Then I need to reactivate the 2GB Moto X somehow. Would that keep the unlimited data on the Note 4?
Here is all the info you need. Be sure to read carefully the different methods possible and ask questions on there if you have any.

I did the same thing, but in store at best buy since that's the only way to get it from them at the moment. They activated the phone on the non-unlimited line (said they had to activate it). I turned the phone off, called Verizon and had them reactivate the old sim for the non-unlimited phone, then did a factory reset on the new note 4 just to be safe and popped in the unlimited sim. No issues so far here either.

First you need to have an available upgrade. So lets say you have one unlimited line and it available for upgrade, as soon as you purchase a 2 years contract phone, that data plan will change, doesn't matter how you activate the device. The only way is you need an additional line with upgrade available then transfer this upgrade to your unlimited line when active on the unlimited line when you received the device. The second option is buy a full retail device.

You using data doesn't slow down anyone else. They have been selling this data is scarce thing forever which isn't true. What slows us down is them over selling which they will never stop as long as they can sell it. but lol She probably had no idea what to do those numbers don't make any sense!!
