Gsm for states - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Just curious if anyone still checks in on here, so I would like to hear from successful users who use this device on att. My brothers phone is crapping out on him and doesn't have the money to get a new device. I know my inc2 is unlocked bc I used it while I was in Qatar but don't remember what rom I was running to use Gsm. I would like to use an AOSP rom vs sense but I will use whatever works. I read that skyraider is a good one. Thanks for any info and possibly include the APN settings I would need for att. Thanks.

I still check in here once in a while & this is from personal experience - we have 2 unlocked DI2 and use the GSM bands at home for backup & abroad for travel. Flashed DW's device with Sky Raider since Dec. 2011 and has been using it continuously and the ROM is solid for both CDMA and GSM usage. I go back & forth between TSM Sense 5.x and SR, apps will update to the latest as released via the (Google) Store - and if you need more internal Apps storage space, move them to the mSD card or you will run out of memory space. I recommend using a 16MB mSD card (which came pre-installed with earliest DI2 in the box from VZW)
VZW's stock ROM (AndyBone's stock rom, deodexed - as I recall) will work just fine with its bloatware removed/frozen but TSM or SR are much more responsive & smooth, and seldom crash or lock up. All 3 variants can switch back & forth between CDMA and GSM as needed, depending on your brother's "home location" on where to use this phone.
WiFi is great on this phone - if you are using this on postpaid AT&T (or T-Mobile) - you will need to be on a (shared) data plan and firmware restrictions in the Rom will limit you to 2.5G or Edge speed, as 3G speed is not available The only time that you will get 3G speed in the U.S. is if you are using a "foreign" (prepaid) Sim and that it roam on AT&T and can access 3G bands on the device. Data speed on T-Mobile is slow depending on tower locations & band(s) used - your own results do & might varied.
The APN settings are the common, universal ones for all Windows/Android devices so it's fairly easy to setup - just google for it. There is a hidden menu to access to edit the MMS & browser settings on the device, and remember to save it before exiting.
If your brother is going to use it on AT&T, make sure he can try & test out the (standard-sized Sim) device before committing to a data plan and/or long term contract, unless he is going on a prepaid GSM plan (StraightTalk or Simpe Mobile, etc.) - also, I believe this phone can be used on PagePlus Cellular, a MNVO provider using VZW's CDMA network.
If you have difficulties downloading AB's stock or TSM rom, please send me a PM and I will give you a private link to download it. SR's rom should be readily available.
Good luck !

Awesome thank you. Not too worried about 3g, he will have wifi in the dorm and most of the campus I'm sure. He's currently on my aunt's plan so data and all that is already on it. So you recommend skyraider tho? Which do you prefer to be better responsive, sr or sense 5?

Both wife n I using SR currently n most of the newest Android 4.x apps update installed easily on their own. It is more responsive and its easy switch back n forth in adverse conditions are what I depend the Rom for.
Do a full stock backup, full wipe n install SR to run it for real life use, make a full backup then full wipe, install TSM to run for comparison. Make. Backup then stick with 1 of 2 with the other as reserve. I think you will agree w SR as better choice but draw your own user conclusion.

ROM difference between i927 & i927R and 4G symbol

Hi,
Being in Australia the Captivate Glide is not available locally so ordered it online via a parallel importer.
I was supposed to receive the AT&T version but due to no stock I received the Rogers i927R version.
I cannot root the device as my work place prevents it since I need to use it for work related messaging.
1. Is there a list of differences between the AT&T and Rogers ROM's ?
2. I'm on Optus which uses 900/2100MHz, so the phone will connect on 2100.
Using an App called Network Signal Info I can see data connection switching when I'm moving around as normal, but the data symbol in the notification bar doesn't match when on 3G as follows:
NetInfo | Speed | Notif-Bar-Symbol
GPRS | 55kbit | G
UMTS (3G) | 384kbit | 4G <-- doesnt say 3G
HSDPA | 7.2Mbit | 4G
This a bug or ROM incompatibility ?
Thanks.
The only differences I know of is that the Rogers ROM is carrier-iq free and the tethering option is unlocked.
In my AT&T version, I can't find any way to manually toggle between 2G and 3G networks. However the network info apps/widget show it's automatically switching between EDGE, HSDPA and HSPA.

It would be handy to sometimes by able to force 2G to save battery.
Anyway, can the Rogers ROM be flashed onto the AT&T Glide and still work ?

Good point.
Sounds like I should stick with the Rogers one they sent me rather than swap it for an AT&T version since the Rogers one will be most compatible without having to 'root'.
Carriers in Australia seem to allow tethering by default as long as you have a working App for it.
Thanks.
Which parallel importer did you use, do they have an online storefront?
Hope the Rogers version pricing comes down as fast the AT&T one. That's I went for At&T, down the line I'll end up flashing it with an open ROM. Mostly because of OpenVPN support.

Indeed that's why I asked, since I don't use any data packages.
I checked my mom's S II, appears to be an AT&T carrier limitation. It won't even scan for other networks. I set her S II to 2G.
Earlier I wasn't concerned with the AT&T ROM, but this one is annoying, I could save some serious battery time by switching to 2G.

They've been very helpful and responsive, trying to get stock as quickly as possible.
When they couldnt get the AT&T Captivate Glide they sent me the Rogers Galaxy S Glide.
Seems that was the better way to go.
AT&T locks down their network and band select while Rogers does not. AT&T uses an "H+" on the HSDPA network to show status while Rogers uses a "4G".
Learned by flashing Rogers ROM onto an ATT cglide. Changed the model to 927R as well. Went back to ATT when I noticed the loss of the ATT wifi options.

So even after rooting the phone, there's no way to manually change bands while on the AT&T ROM?

I'm using the Rogers version in Australia.
I have all the normal WiFi options and have used it at home and on public ones with no issues.
I think, just guessing, that Tynar is talking about the customized WiFi options on the AT&T ROM I have read about which gives you access to their own WiFi network.

Yep, I since had a look at the User Guides, of which there is a different one for each version Rogers and AT&T. The ROM's have been customized to show different symbols for mobile connectivity.

Ya... Thats at&t limitation, I guess... But atleast in my sister's AT&T Thrill phone (running Froyo + rooted with SuperOneClick) the "NETWORK" app (LINK) from AM/PlayStore works and helps in selecting 2G only or 3G only whenever needed...
But even that app is NOT working on my rooted CapGlide... May be because this phone has only rooted-ROM and not rooted-Kernal (as told by rooting guide in cap.glide development section)... Experienced members please help... I badly need 2G only for battery backup and 3G only for good speed as 3G coverage in my place is not great...
Thanks...

With AT&T Rom, you don't have that option.
You can flash Rogers Room (Untouched or Custom Rom) where you have the option of manually choosing network and choosing 2G/3G
Switching to 2G would really save on battery life.
So the notable differences are...
1. The AT&T ROM doesn't allow band switching or manual carrier search and selection. While the Rogers ROM does not have this restriction?
2. AT&T allows WiFi tethering, while Rogers doesn't?
3. Both versions come with Mail for Exchange apps?
4. Skype, G+ Hangouts, Google Talk, Voice and video works on both?
Please add/correct any other big differences. I'll make a table and put it up on Wikipedia once we have the notable differences, that could cause issues with international use.

Unlocked Incredible 2 but data plan and 3g not working

Hi All ,
I had Vz droid Incredible locked. Last week i moved to att and so unlocked the incredible 2 with some unlock code . It started working on att network i'm able to make call and receive calls. But the data plan (mobile internet )and 3G is not working. Please do you have any suggestion on how to get this working.
Vivow HBOOT - 0.98 and android : 2.3.4
thanks
kevin.
You will never get data because the radio in the dinc2 can't pick up the frequencies of at&T's data network.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
I thought you could get 2g speeds on ATT and Tmo.
Check in your settings to make sure you have all network settings set appropriately.
OP, are you running VZ's factory (HTC) ROM or custom ROM (Sense or ??) and was your DI2 unlocked by code via eBay or by VZW Global Support while you're on CDMA with Big Red?
Can you switch to GMS/UMTS setting - and check to see whether it's picking up AT&T and/or T-Mobile - and you are in the US, correct? Are you on prepaid or postpaid with AT&T and is data enabled on your account?
Mine was rooted & unlocked via VZW, and GSM voice/SMS worked fine - running SkyRaider, CS's lates CM7.2 & NJ's Sense2.1/3.0 stock roms - (E)dge or 2.5/2G data works on my AT&T Gophone SIM with data but won't work on T-Mo unless I subscribe/add the data option. For overseas travel, my China Mobile HK prepaid Sim worked great for voice, SMS & broadband on PAYG basis here in the US too - roaming on its partners, either AT&T or T-Mobile (it's on Edge/GPRS only, I think - as I don't need to run up pricey charges for broadband access, use WiFi when I'm on this CMHK account) - when we're in Bermuda last month, same Sim roamed on DigiCel and it showed 3G connection.
Most likely, you will need to clear cache & reset your DI2's browser settings, and maybe modify the APN to get broadband/MMS to work properly, assuming that you are provisioned properly ...
Thanks for your replies.
yes i did some APN settings and mobile internet worked. But working for only Edge data connection not for 3G. This phone is still having VZW ROM (android build), But if i root it and change the android to ICS, do you people think it will work on 3G.
I need to have 3G running on my phone because of att poor service, I'm using the micro-cell to get the att service at my home (micro-cell works with 3g phones). Any suggestion please.
thanks

Tmobile troubles with minutes/txt.. help?

Hey guys,
I was using my dinc2 in Europe all year and it was great. No troubles there.
I did some research since i've come back to US, and learned that people have been able to use tmobile with their phones. I've only read about some troubles with data plans ... but i'm not trying to use data at all.
I simply want to buy the 1000 prepaid minutes for 100$ from tmobile and pop it in. My plans is to use Wifi with google voice (groove IP) pretty much everywhere, and use the minutes from tmobile only when i'm on the move.
I tried getting a friends tmobile SIM to work just to make sure that there would be no problems, and i failed. It simply doesn't recognize the service.
My phone is S-OFF, hdboot .97, clockworkmodded, and runs Skyraider Zeus.
Is it a matter of running the correct ROM?

We have 2 DI2 and running both AT&T Prepaid and T-Mo Prepaid on it - no trouble with voice with Skyraider Zeus v1.3 or Nitsuj17's Stock Sense rom - APN settings for AT&T was auto-updated as I recall and being provisioned with a data bundle in the plan, it works. For T-Mobile, there are no default APN settings under GSM mode pre-loaded, but as you know, it's not required for voice & SMS to work on the DI2, you will get a "redirect" screen if you launch the browser to sign up for a data plan for it to work (and, that's indication of a working Sim card)
With the sim inserted & switched over to GSM, does it identify the "T-Mobile" network on the lockscreen or homes screen at all? after a reboot ? If you're running SR Zeus in Europe - then, there's no reason for it to not work here in the U.S.- recheck your settings for Mobile Network ...

[Q] CANADA Ability to tether on Wind AWS network using TMobile T889

Hi All,
I currently have a rooted TMobile T889.
I have a quick question in regards to using the TMobile based phone on the Wind network here in Canada.
After searching, I found WarlockW's instruction post on updating the APN's to remove the lock in order to utilize the hotspot for the Tmobile SGH-T889 G Note II Reference Here ---> Remove The Locked & Hidden APNS & Tethering T-Mobile APN's! - New Updated XML
However, in the instructions provided in the above link he states "for TMobile users only."
this left me confused and lead me to posting here. Does that mean for that the modification linked above is for TMobile Network users only or TMobile Phone users only?
With a TMobile based T889, what is my best option to tether using this device on the Wind Canadian AWS network? Would I be better off flashing the phone with a Wind stock ROM? If so, where can I find a copy of the Wind ROM for the T889 (Searched)?
I haveunlimited data [fair data policy usage after 10GB] with Wind and also already pay for the tethering option as well.
Thanks!
I'm with mobilicity in Calgary and tethering works with the jedix8 rom....no mods but did delete the proxy in Apn
Off the top of my head:
-Carriers can lock APN settings through CSC.
-If Wind uses a separate APN for tethering (didn't bother checking) make sure its entered properly.
-Use whatever fixes that may be required beyond APN changes (Removal of T-Mobile-specific APNs may still be necessary.) on the US T889 ROM, or, if you're going to start flashing stuff anyway, consider using a T889V, N7105 or I317(M) based ROM which have none of those restrictions.
A broad, over-generalized statement I've made before is that if you have a choice, odds are that the Canadian or International ROMs have less restrictions, branding and bloat than their US counterparts. I understand some carrier-specific features like Wi-Fi calling muddle the waters, but this isn't a concern here. And if you *do* want carrier apps, they're increasingly available from Google Play. (Or just download that carrier's stock ROM and rip them out. [Cue evil laughter.])
Good luck,
Darkshado
if you are rooted, simply download the treVee mod... that's what I use with T-mobile... you're just gonna have to edit the settings in the app to get it to work right. Simple apk download and install and ur set
I used the Jedi 8 ROM on my tmob phone. Tethering already enabled. Simple.

[DOMESTIC][UNLOCK] Domestic GSM confirmed working on some AOSP roms

I can confirm that you no longer need to use the much outdated CM11 T-Mobile ROM, T-Mobile Stock ROM or the RayGlobe Flex ROM in order to use a USA domestic sim such as T-Mobile. I noticed that the BUILD.PROP on the T-Mobile CM11 ROM has some enabled goodies which do not come on the default CM11 for the LS980. That made me wonder what if I use a unified ROM (built for all variants) instead of the ROMs available on the Sprint G2 section? The build.prop there will still include capabilities for GSM devices, which CyanogenMod seems to strip in order to avoid switching to GSM (correct me if I am wrong). Anyways I gave it a go using the LS980 Bliss Pop ROM based on 5.1, which is found in the non-carrier specific section of the G2 Android Development, and sure enough I was back to being a Sprint device. Using the dialer, I accessed the Testing menu by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, switched to WCDMA preferred, and it seemed to have revert. Then I clicked WCDMA only and it stuck and I could see my signal bars changing. THEN I switched it to GSM/LTE and FINALLY HSPA+ appeared. Calls, texts, data, it all works as the APNs were already auto selected. MMS DOES NOT WORK. I've been using it like this for the past couple of hours and no issued so far. I cannot remember if I did the official unlock available on our section of XDA as I've had quite a few of the Sprint version on and off, but I really do not see what role that plays in the matter. If it doesn't work for you, then you probably do need to use the official unlock.
***Again, if my theory is correct, this should work only on unified ROMs, which are ROMs compiled for all/multiple variants.
It never worked for me on stock CyanogenMod ROMs for the LS980, thus my theory. Another theory I have is that since Sprint now allows domestic unlocks, these phones may be free to enter the domestic side if you can get them to recognize a domestic sim...
If you want pictures/proof, ask, its about 5am in my time zone and I'm too lazy to take them and upload them.
If you want to force HSPA+ instead of HSPA, use the "HSPA+ Tweaker" app found in the Play Store.
If you feel like this is good news since you use this device on a carrier other than Sprint, remember to thank me.
If you are in another country and are willing to experiment, try it and I'll update my OP as soon as I can.
If you have already mentioned this in another thread, this is my own thread, started so that others can see it easier rather than having to accidentally stumble across yours in another thread.
EDIT: Can confirm it works on other AOSP ROMs. When switching network modes, you must have a stable data connection or else it will automatically try to connect to Sprint towers.
MMS DOES NOT WORK!
Outside the usa GSM sims works perfect on every not SPRINT rom (stock based like cloudy or optimus, or AOSP/CM based)

Thus the first word in the title of this thread is "Domestic". Back then, you couldn't get a USA sim working with those AOSP based ROM, heck you couldn't even use it if the rom wasnt modified to spoof the T-Mobile version, see for yourself the domestic "unlocked" roms I mentioned above show your device as a D801. There has always been the international unlock which can be used even on stock, but that wouldn't help USA users.
