Amazon is selling refubrished kindle fires 8.9:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AFKCBQQ..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1WPB0PVZX0N82SB2S0S6
They're also $200 -NEW- until September 1st if you've got an Amazon Student account.
I'm sorely tempted, but I'd want to root it and just looking at this forum makes it seem like rooting the Fire HD is bound to result in failure.

Hi. I checked the Amazon site, and seeing as my Kindle isn't getting the 2nd generation os anytime soon, I saw you could download the package. Now the software package was labeled under Kindle Fire 2nd Gen. But it said you can drag and drop to the kindle software folder. Does this work over all devices, and if so, can I install that 2nd gen update on my 1st gen? Thanks.
I installed the AOSP version of Jelly Bean in hopes that I could fake the system into looking like a generation 2. There's something about getting the build prop from the generation 2 ROM but I can't figure it out. Is there anyone out there that can create a replicated generation 2 build. This wold allow us to use the app store as a kindle and not an Android tablet.

Why not just purchase a 2nd gen Kindle? The hardware diiferences between 1st and 2nd are many.

I don't feel like spending another $200 when I already did for the one I bought last year.
I'm happy to be a a member of the forum and I'm new here.I own a kindle fire hdx 8.9,but I don't know whether there is a cm11 rom for it.Because I didn't see the word ‘hdx’.And what is the meaning of 'Kindle Fire 2‘?I hope someone can answer my questions.
Kindle Fire first gen
Kindle Fire 2nd gen (HD)
Kindle fire 3rd gen (HDX)
To complicate things a bit more, the 7" version of the first gen 7" Fire was re-released in 2012 with slightly upgraded HW and a new OS, this is called the Kindle Fire 2. The 7" version of the 2nd gen HD was re-released last year as a model that lacks a front camera, this is known as Kindle Fire HD 7" (2013). The 8.9" HD model remains the same. These variants are shown on the respective Wikipedia pages.
As far as I understand it, both 3rd gen HDX models and the 2013 version of the HD 7" suffer from the lack of an exploit that will allow the bootloader to be subverted, meaning that they're locked-down and you can't install a custom ROM. There is an exploit that will allow root on the KFHD7(2013), and there are methods to get root on HDX models that haven't been updated to the latest firmware, see the relevant forum. Once rooted, you can get the Play Store running and some Google services and apps. But if your HDX has already succumbed to the OTA update that started to go out a few weeks ago you're out of luck at present.
The only model that Amazon currently sells which can be turned into a proper Android tablet is the older Fire HD 8.9".
[Actually, it seems that you can still find the upgraded first-gen Fire for sale on Amazon if you follow the link on the Wikipedia entry, but Amazon doesn't advertise it.]

I didn't notice the 'Kindle' until the second generation,so the question looks a little stupid. But you were so patient.Thank you very much. It's really a very detailed answer. But I still wonder if there is any possibility of getting the device unlocked and installing a custom ROM?

only if a dev comes along and get lucky and finds some code he can exploit but it is unknown when or if it will even be cracked so don't get your hopes too high.

Hi! I would like to know some of your thoughts on Amazon's Android market. Is it dead? Is anyone planning to buy the new Fire HD? What are your thoughts. Will beloved independent developers step up to get ROM's working on the Fire Phone and the coming Fire HD tablets? I personally do not have a Fire Phone. I have only had the original kindle fire 1 and original kindle fire 2, but I am planning on buying the new Fire HD 7". Anyone else excited about the new device line? It seems the original Kindle Fire was the biggest success. Thanks! Looking forward to your honest answers.
actually I'm interested to get this phone.. but it's not officially available on my country, so I have to make another decision

Ah. That's too bad
I think Amazon Appstore is certainly NOT dying. Otherwise, it's expanding and now with Amazon's introduction of Fire phone it will continue to do so. Amazon Appstore, together with Google, is the leader in this field.
Hello, I have a kindle for hd 6 less than a year old. It fell off of my counter while cooking and it's pretty cracked. I've been wanting a new phone for a while so how much would best buy give me if I trade it in when I buy my new phone?

Fire Index: Which Amazon (Kindle) Fire Do I have?
Sent from my KFFOWI using Tapatalk
Pretty straightforward.. I just bought the base level Kindle Fire from amazon for the Black Friday special, the newest model. It wasn't labeled with a Generation as far as I can tell.... Is this the same as what this forum refers to as "Kindle 2", for second gen. Here is the link for the model I bought: http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Display-...F8&qid=1449868242&sr=8-1&keywords=kindle+fire
I just want to make sure any modding I do matches to the right forum. Thanks!
I own a kindle fire 2, and I can tell you that one is newer, the second gen has no camera and it doesn't hace any button besides the power. Its serial number begins with D026.
