This is a really important question for me since I have many voicemails downloaded to my Evo, and I cannot upgrade my Fresh Evo installation (3.1.0.1) without a full wipe.
There is a similar thread here. However, nobody ever responds, even to say "No, it's just not possible." But since the voicemails are downloaded to the phone, it seems like it must be possible to backup and restore them.
Has anyone succeeded in backing up and restoring visual voicemails? Can anyone provide instructions? I'd really really appreciate if anyone can finally answer this.
(I understand many of you just use Google Voice, but that in itself doesn't allow me to preserve the voicemails I already have.)
If you find out I would also like to know.

I'm pretty sure I have seen a third party app somewhere that can accomplish this. Don't know if it works as I have used GVoice exclusively for a few years now.
You should probably start by searching the market or AppBrain, etc. If I find the name, I'll update this post.
Thanks when I get by my computer I'll thank you with the button.

Titanium Backup doesn't seem to cover VVMs, no.
To all, thank you for your replies. I'll have to buy Root Explorer, but hopefully copying the VVM files from the path from Just_s / Otaknedroid will do it.
If anyone's tried that method and gotten it to work, please post!
(Also, I'm still interested if there's an app specifically to do this...)
For me, they've always come back after a wipe. They're stored on a cloud, and the phone automatically downloads all the ones that were in your voicemail.

That's really weird. You say "after a wipe," but does that include after installing a whole new ROM? Every time I install a new ROM, they disappear and never come back... From the other replies, it seems like that's normal. I wonder what's different about your system.
Yeah, after a new ROM too. Hmm, I'm wondering now too. I'd always thought everybody's did that.

I backed Up & Restored my voicemail with Titanium Backup Pro
I have a Samsung Epic with latest Bonsai Rom. Within the app list of Titanium Backup Pro v 3.6.8 I selected the "voicemail T.5.1.0.52" app. I backed it up with data. After I wiped my phone, i selected this app and since the app is pre-installed, I selected to "restore data" only. This restored all of my voicemail from before my hard reset!
My voicemails always come back after a wipe and flash as well.

I have the Epic as well, and was restoring from a backup of EC05 Stock pre-rooted.. I backed up the data of my Voicemail T 5.1.x.xx app in Titanium Backup, and after the EC05 restore I attempted to restore the Voicemail DATA ONLY and it failed - twice. Even attempting to restore App+data will not work..
I'm pretty disappointed I may have lost the voicemails I thought would restore

I have voicemails backed up and have been restoring them to my VVM on several different roms. I use Titanium Backup for this and have not had any issues with it. I have backed up "Voicemail T.5.1.0.60" When I restore the app, I select Data only and it restores all of the prior voicemails that existed during the most recent backup. Hope this helps.
Restore Visual Voicemails on non-rooted phone?
I'm a noobie with non-rooted Evo4G and Evo3D phones.
I'm trying to save the VVMs on my Evo4G and transfer them to my Evo3D.
So far the only way I've found is to forward them one by one to my email, but this loses all properties for the voicemail (date received, from whom, etc).
I tried using Titanium backup, but it won't allow me to install without rooting first... and I'm nervous about rooting and cause problems.
I've searched the forums without luck.
Does anyone know where the visual voicemail files are stored on the EVO4G, or how to move them to a new phone? There must be a way, since it's clear they are stored locally, not in the cloud.
Thanks for your help

Having root....go to that directory on the phone...preferrably with Root Explorer...copy the folder and paste it to ur SD card directory. Database and VVMs saved as .AMRs will be inside which u can copy back to the data directory when ur done flashing or what have u. good luck

My EVO isn't rooted, and when I use ASTRO, I can't find the directory you reference. Is there a way to find the visual voicemail files on a NON-rooted evo?
Delevin1 - did you have any luck with this? When I open Astro, by default it starts in the directory /mnt/sdcard, but clicking the "up" button twice will take me to the root directory / and from there I can go to /data and its subdirectories.
Hopefully zagmans method works. But if not..your voicemails will always be in ur last nandroid backup. So you could nandroid back to listen to one. I know it would suck to do that but at least your voicemails arent gone.. just always make a nand backup!

Data Directory and New VVM version (T.5.2.0.24)
Yes, I'm able to get to the Data Directory using ASTRO File Manager, but the directory appears empty, even when I change the preferences to "show hidden files".
The Visual Voicemail app recently received an update that added "folders", including a "Deleted" folder (so you won't lose a voicemail that you accidentally deleted), and an option to "Move to SD". This moves selected voicemails to the /mnt/sdcard/smvvm directory which is great progress. However, it renames them (e.g. SD-10A, SD-11A, SD-12A, etc) so you lose data about who the voicemail is from, when it was received, and how long it is (although you can see the size of the file)
In the properties (as viewed via ASTRO) for each file, it shows the modified date as the date you moved it to the SD card, not the date it was recorded. There is no created date.
Definitely a move in the right direction, but still needs some work.

Woke up today just to see that Titanium Backup had crashed during the scheduled backup tonight. Since then i haven't been able to do anything with it!
Sometimes it crashes right off the start, sometimes i can start a backup and have it crash about ~12-14% in. I tried going in to the settings and checking the "AUTO, indirect" setting that they recommend if you're having problems, but that didn't help either. (And it took me 3 tries to get in to the settings without it crashing!)
I've tried wiping all the app data, re-installing it, installing an older version (that they suggest on their website if having issues). I also tried re-setting the super user permissions for it. None of which helps!
I haven't found any information on it yet, so i assume i'm alone with this? Have anyone else been having the same issue?
Just emailed the support, but i imagine it will take at least a week for them to reply (if they do).
So, any suggestions?
EDIT: I just timed it and it appears to crash after approx 30 seconds, no matter what i do in the application. I Hope the developers sees this.
DOUBLE EDIT: It appears to be working again after updating to v4.9.0.1.
I don't do scheduled backups but the app hasn't failed me yet doing it manually.
well id suggest connecting to your pc and backup the titaniumbackup folder (that way you know all your backups are safe)
then making a nandroid backup
then flashing another ROM or just wiping and reflashing the same ROM you're using

The backups i have stored are outdated now, i've changed a lot since the last update. The plan all along was to do a titanium backup, sync it to dropbox, flash this rom, and then restore all my apps etc. So i'm really kind of out of options now, unless i download everything manually and set everything up again. Doesn't sound very fun tbh. I might just try to find an alternative to titanium, but i'd really like to get it working again. Nothing seems to help.
You are not alone!
Hi, just to say you are not alone. Your case 99% similar to mine.
Just encountered this freeze after the app update on 18/19 Mar and the app will freeze even when I do nothing in the app. And yes, what a coincidence, the app when backup under schedule has stopped (with screen save off) at 14% completion.
Tried the method of deleting the app data and reinstall the app and even worse, now the app stops right when launching after a moment of black screen.
Already filed email and log file to support hopefully there will be an answer...
Hi, I'm also having exactly the same problem with TBU. Am on the pro version.
This has been a problem for about a week now. Not sure if it doesn't play nicely with CM9 or the kernel i'm running. What are you guys running? I may re-flash stock ICS and see if it still gives me problems. Quick question, does reflashing stock ICS remove root? I read somewhere it does and just want to get some different opinons.
Am running a CM9 nightly with Franco Kernal on GMS Galaxy Nexus.

I am also on pro version. Mine is at stock 4.0.2.
And yes, if you re-flash stock you lose root and have to re-root.
I am very very suspecting the crash is something related to the license checking of pro-key so that will explain why the program will crash in 20-30 sec without any special action doing or launching in the app. Just my guess... Hope the support will answer back shortly...
Thanks for the help, have uninstalled for now, will you post if the dev gets back to you?
Interesting that it's happening across a range of different setups.

Thank you very much, guys!
After a few days of desperate waiting for an update of TB, you made my day. Clearing caches and data of Titanium and Google Play solved the problem.
I would've never solved this big distress without you guys, you r my saaaaaaaviors, my superheroes
I would REALLY appreciate some help with this please, because after 10 reflashes, I still can't find the problem. I've been trying to flash the Darkside Evolution ROM ( latest T-Mobile version ) on my phone. Everything seems to work fine, until I start restoring my text messages, at which point, all hell breaks lose. My stock messaging app just brings up a black screen and eventually FCs, Google Play keeps FCing as well, and occasionally, no keys typed in any of my keyboard apps show up in the fields selected. Reboots don't help.
Here's how I've been flashing ( running CWM 5.0.2.7 non-touch ): 1. flash darkside super wipe. 2. flash ROM. 3. flash darkside cache-wipe. 4. let system sit 10 minutes before toying with it. I've also tried flashing the cache-wipe after the 10 minute system sit, but I still have issues.
Here's what I've tried, with no success:
1. Searching the forums for any possible solution, but to no avail.
2. Mainly use GoSMS to backup & restore texts, but also tried SMS Backup & Restore and GoBackup instead, with same results, if not worse.
3. Re-ODINed to stock, rooted and flashed CWM again .
4. Checked MD5 checksum of all files I've said I've used; all are verified as correct.
5. Tried Settings->Applications, and deleting cache / data for troubled apps. Only fixes issue with Google Play.
5. Tried different ROMs ( Juggernaut v5.0 and Darkside Digital Warfare v2.7-( my somewhat stable DD until now) months ago, and Infamous 2.6-(worked after a couple of tries, but missing features I need) and Darkside Evolution v7 the past few days ).
TL;DR - Restoring SMS breaks any Rom I flash. Help please?
Could someone help, pretty please?
...I'm sorry if I sound pushy or agitated, but I spent about 20 hours just this past week, wiping, flashing, and restoring, over and over again with quite a few different ROMs to no avail, and unfortunately I'm not exaggerating. I'm tech savvy, but I know anyone can make stupid mistakes, and I would just REALLY appreciate it if someone could help me finally get to the bottom of this; it's been the bane of my rooting life. I can get on an IM app if that would make it easier.
I used to use Titanium Backup to restore sms & mms. But now I use Go Backup and hadn't had any issues. Every time I've used SMS Backup. I would get issues of the app freezing. I'm using TWRP for my recovery. I know some Dev's say not to use it but I haven't had one issue with it at all.
When you do restore your SMS & MMS are you rebooting your device right after?

Thanks for the reply. I've mostly used GoSMS Backup, but I've tried SMS Backup & Restore, Go Backup, and TiBu ( with "Migrate System Data" checked ) this week, but all of them cause random issues. I've been hesitant about using TWRP because a lot of people don't recommend it, but I don't mind giving that a shot if it won't brick my phone. Is there anything I should know about using it?
And sometimes I reboot right after an SMS/MMS restore, and sometimes I try to access the messages before rebooting. With TiBu, I always reboot first now. Either way, I still have issues.
I'm also on DarksideEvolution.3.v7, and have used SMS Backup and Restore without any issues. Also used SMS Backup+ without issues. I've restored anywhere from 400-800 +/- messages. How many text messages are you trying to restore? My only thought, was if your backup has thousands of messages, it may cause a memory issue that causes the hang ups.
I'm trying to restore about 12,000 text messages...
I was able to get DarksideEvolution3v7 completely working once, except that my GPS wasn't working, so I was going to wait until TDJ releases an update with a GPS fix until I try Darkside again. I haven't used SMS Backup+ because I don't want to use cloud services, and SMS Backup & Restore is one of the best working ones right now. I just tried GoBackup again, and after about 65%, it force closed with some kind of unknown exception error, and no texts showed even after a reboot.
That's your issue. Had it happen to me awhile back. Had to do some manipulation to get it to work. I forget the details exactly unfortunately. However, I do recall it was related to The max limiter in the messaging app and had to go with handcent, adjusted max sms settings higher prior to SMS refresh. Then had some issues with mMs which is the part I forget
Tb has the xml backup feature now, that might help since the backup file is smaller, so maybe memory isn't such an issue
I was afraid it might be something like that. I've had issues with previous phones restoring texts when I start hitting around 10k messages, but nothing this severe, and I figured that our SGSII's processing power should be able to handle it. I've been making sure that under the stock messaging settings, "Delete Old Messages" is always unchecked, but I'm not sure if that's what the max limiter is.
And do you know if there's anything special that I have to do to activate that TiBu feature? I saw it in my changelog when I updated, but I wasn't sure.
Hello XDA Community,
i recently flashed a new rom to my mobile and wanted to restore my apps as
usual containing whatsapp as well. Everthing went well except whatsapp. I
tried to restore whatsapp with Titanium Backup, MayBackUp Pro and the
build-in restore function of whatsapp of course too. I tried every possible
copy and paste solution i could find on the internet but nothing helped.
The result was always the same the only thing which was restored were the
group chat names nothing else all my chats are gone.
I tried all suggestions from this Post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268031 but nothing helped.
I switched from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1151765 to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031467.
Please help me to find a solution. Thank You
Do you have the following folder on your sd card?
sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases
The chat backups should be stored in there. I've successfully uninstalled and reinstalled the app, and restored all the chats successfully before.
Yes i have the folder there otherwise i weren't able to use the restore function of whatsapp.
I reinstalled it dozen times but always the same result. Groupchat names visible but empty and all single chats are gone.
Thank u for ur reply
Check the files within that folder, open them up within a text editor or something, just to check they're not corrupted.
Instead of restoring app+data from Titanium Backup, clear app data then uninstall WhatsApp. Then try installing the app fresh from the Play Store first.
Open it and set it up fresh, hopefully will ask to restore the conversations by itself. Afterwards, restore data only with Titanium.
I tried what u suggested but it didnt work. I installed WA fresh from the Market set it up and after that i restored the data with titanium backup. When i start WA after this procedure WA told me the Database is corrupted and asked me if i want restore from sd-card but it doesnt matter if i press yes or no the result ist still the same. WA Groupchats restored but empty and single chats missing.
Thank u for ur reply
Hmm if it's telling you it may be corrupted, then unfortunately the database may be corrupted.
In the Databases folder, can you rename the msgstore.db.crypt file to something else, then rename another slightly older database msgstore.db.crypt-2013-08-XX to msgstore.db.crypt. Then uninstall and reinstall from Play Store again?
I'm hoping it's just the latest file which is corrupted, and the others backups are ok. You may not get all the messages back, you might lose a day's worth of messages if this works. Sorry if you've already tried this too, running out of ideas
Yes i tried this too. So i wanted to prove if the Backups are really corrupted. I installed another ROM (euroskank) and installed whatsapp through the playstore and restored all messages during the validating process. Viola 27.000 messages restored. So now i have absolutly no idea what i can do to solve it and restore it on the ROM i want.
Anyway Thanks for ur help

Hah you wouldn't believe me, that was going to be my next suggestion, restore an old nandroid or new ROM to see if it works. I didn't think it would work because it still has to refer to the files on the SD card, independent of ROM. Glad it's definitely not corrupted though
So once it's installed and working on euroskank, make another manual backup.
Then try Mildwild again, install WhatsApp from scratch, it really should work, finger's crossed!
So finally i could test it. AND it didn't work. Still the same problem. Thats insane. I tried even a previous version of the rom to test if it's caused by the latest one but no got the same result.
Thank u for ur help i appreciate it.

The solution that worked for me...
Hi I was having the same problem as you and also couldn't find anyone who had the same issue. Anyway I was moving from a gingerbread phone to a jellybean phone. So I used a backup app called Super Backup. I tried numerous things that didn't work. This is what I did that did work.
Also backup up your backup before you start.
1. On new phone uninstall whatsapp, then delete the whatsapp folder on the internal storage.
2. Restore whatsapp from backup app.
3. Before you run whatsapp delete the whatsapp folder on the internal storage again.
4. Copy the whatsapp folder from the sd card to the internal storage.
5. Run whatsapp.
Let me know of this works for you. It did for me.
Thanks.

Tried everything in the thread here and even restoring complete backups of the previous ROM (what works when trying to use whatsapp on a WIFI only tablet) but that doesn't even work.
I think it has something to do with the encryption in the ROM i guess or the way it stores the Phone number, as Whatsapp only wants to restore a message database for the same Phone number...

I think it has to be something like that, because just as you i have made the same transition from gingerbread to MILDWILD 14 Rom, and the problem only seems to be with the WILDWILD Rom.
any other rom that i have tested, the internal restor of whatsapp works like a charm.
So the only thing that can cause the problem is the framework/UI from the Mildwild roms.
I've written to the Dev.from WILDWILD to ask assistence, but so far no reaction.
Tonight i'm going to test a few other MILDWILD Roms to see if the problem is with all the MW roms or only with the 14

I tried all the other WildWild MOD Roms yesterday and the problem only seems to be with the MW-14 Rom.
With all other Roms the WhatsApp restor works perfectly.
So for now i'm going to stay with the MW CM-8 version and try to Mod that myself a bit.
Seems to be very stable and fast, Also more options in the Camera Settings and i like the ICS look.
Only downside are the quicksettings (i like them more from MW14 or Sense)

usual containing whatsapp as well.
Thank You

Hi,
Sorry i have to dig this thread out, as i need help. Im also facing the same problem, trying to restore my backup file from old samsung S3 phone onto my new samsung note3 phone. I believe maybe somehow, by now, you have figured it out. I need help here. All my single chat history cannot be restored.
The backup file in the database doesnt seem corrupted. I went through a conventional whatsapp restore by pasting the file in the whatsapp database folder and launch the whatsapp after installation and restore. But still, no single chat history. Only group chats.

I'm trying to get my head around titanium backup and the correct way to restore data when switching ROMs. Some people say you have to restore your device ID. I've always had issues with notifications after restoring app data. I'm interested what is the correct procedure and What I'm doing wrong?

For me... I only backup user apps I dont backup system data. When restoring I don't restore WhatsApp and twitter( I noticed delayed notification if I restore with titanium ) So u download WhatsApp and twitter from play store and do ur normal setup. That's what works for me with delayed notification
Also never did any device id restore

That's what I've been told however done people say it works fine. Someone with a 6t said they were able to keep everything across different devices

i usually just restore everything. except all apps that needs GCM or CCM for notifications. restoring apps like whats app breaks notifications so those apps just install from playstore.

on telegram no need.
On MIUI I sometimes had that problem with WhatsApp and delayed notifications but with AOSP never happend. You could also try Migrate.
