[Q] [REQUEST] [POLL] Ubuntu touch port for LS970 - Sprint LG Optimus G

I also posted this in the Ubuntu touch thread located here
The LG Optimus G would be a great phone to port Ubuntu onto. It has the same specs as the Nexus 4, same CPU, same amount of RAM, heck the're even the same size, in fact they even share the same code name "mako". The only major difference is that the Optimus G LS970 is a CDMA phone as it is on sprint.
If anyone is willing to port Ubuntu to the LS970 they would go down as legendary (at least in my book), this is such an awesome phone, with the same specs as the nexus 4, yet it barely gets any attention from ROM developers. I had to dig just to find CM 10.1 for this thing. It's such a shame.
I can tell you from what I have learned researching this phone, you can basically use a nexus rom on it, except 2 key differences;
1. I have been told that the nexus and Optimus G store the ROM on the NAND in slightly different ways, but seems to be a minor change from what I've read.
2. The LS970 uses a CDMA radio instead of GSM.
Seeing how we already have Ubuntu phone for the nexus 4 it shouldn't be to hard for someone to bring it over to the Optimus G LS970.
I would take a stab at it myself, but I wouldn't even know where to begin.
If anyone would be willing to take a stab at this it would be awesome. Ubuntu touch is no longer just a mock up, its actually functional at this point, I know a few people who use it daily.

currently use Linux on android it runs great but it does have a few hiccups but i would love to see this ported over

I've been barking up this tree for a little bit.
Many people haven't tried Ubuntu Touch 13.10 and still think the whole thing is a mock up still.
I use it as my daily driver on my Nexus 7(Original) and love it.
Hacking Ubuntu Touch to modify the UI or perform not-yet-implemented tasks or features is easy, fun, and feels awesome.
I would like to see this ported over, even if ofono doesn't support CDMA yet.

I'll get there after my team and I finish our CM. Maybe before, who knows, but definitely soon.

That would be awesome, I'll definitely be looking forward to it. Its becoming painful watching all the nexus owners playing with Ubuntu on YouTube. Lol

Trying to build now... running into some NFC errors.

The furthest I've got with Ubuntu Touch on our device is a black screen. I'm porting it from the Nexus 4.

It's almost done building I think. Should be ready when I get home. I tried porting from the N4 awhile back, but I guess this only works from source.
BTW: see your signature.

I dissected our cm10.1 kernel and altered Ubuntu cm base and the closest I got was a black screen and the worst was the LG logo.

wow, its awesome to see people trying already! I've got my fingers crossed.

If we get this ported, I have some CLI apps to help modify Unity8 that I wrote out.
Background changer

Bash-Notify-OSD.
That I have posted in the Ubuntu Touch forum.
If anyone has request for Unity8 mods, just ask and I'll see what I can do.

This is the canadian section. They can boot mako kernels like multiple people have told you. I don't think anyone can give a definite answer, but the N4 conversion doesn't even apply to them.
I have tested ubuntu on my gnex and it's not something you want yet. It's really incomplete ( I.e. no network beside wifi, no way to enter contact, search is not working). They could have done a video and I'd have been less deceived. I wish this will still evolve but right now it's not something to you want. Btw, it even use cyanogenmod files.

If your interested in Ubuntu Touch as an alternative OS for your phone.. then we might need to wait a while for that. However if your interested in running Ubuntu Desktop OS on your phone alongside Android at the same time and use it as a "carry me everywhere" PC, well that you can do right now! Download "Complete Linux Installer" from the market, it will take you through the process. I've installed it yesterday to see what it's all about, and despite the fact that i have to connect to my phone via a VNC session, performance is not that bad for everyday productivity tasks.
Yeah, Q&A would be a better place for this.

It's getting closer, but no CDMA still, so it wouldn't be worth running for over ten minutes. Once CDMA works, I will definitely build it though.

If you are using this as a phone, you need CDMA to work. Otherwise, Call, Data, and Text will not work. EvDO and LTE also do not work, so you will have no service.

darn it
Canonical is also based in the UK, so CDMA will likely not be prioritized as it will be harder for them to test since they don't have access to it unless they partner with Sprint, Verizon, or another CDMA carrier.

Got a thread going right here, and there is already someone taking a stab at it. Come on over and help support an amazing OS, an amazing phone, and the hard work the devs put into porting something like this.

Ubuntu touch.

So I'm not sure but do we have any restrictions with aosp and drivers?, The reason why is I'd like to try and build Ubuntu touch for our LG OG.
Also I haven't tried anything like this and maybe would like some help from anyone willing to help.

They're close to getting Data working for GSM devices, so CDMA will likely be soon after. Canonical says it should be a daily driver (IE: most peripherals working) by the end of the month.

It's a completely different experience. Different OS. It's like comparing ios and windows with android.
The main advantage to this though is that it is a bit easier for devs who have android app building experience to port their apps and even develop for.
It's one step closer to getting ubuntus name out there on the level of compition windows and mac have had for so long. The biggest step so far has been steam support for it's desktop version. Windows games are flooding in. Imagine this kind of support on a mobile device. Ubuntu has said that soon the same apps could be used cross platform desktop<-->mobile.
Sent from my HTCONE using xda premium
Another advantage is that officially supported quad-core phones will have Ubuntu Desktop as an option when connecting to an external display.

I'd like to say the same, but I will have to wait. I think this phone will handle 4.4 just as well. I also would like to see if it makes it back to my OG Evo. I've heard KitKat can run on older devices due to low memory usage.
Shel's already working on 4.4, from what I've seen. There was a zip posted in the irc, but the flash failed We're definitely getting it though, and I'm absolutely excited to see how it will run. I hope the battery doesn't drain too quickly.

been using CM11 m2 and m3 snapshots with no problems
Interesting that I still don't see a listing on Cyanogenmod for the ls970 when AT&T has theirs listed. I can't believe they sold that many more lgog's than sprint.
I have two phones that I updated to Cyanogenmod CM11 snapshots that are working great so far.
Don't see any real problems with any of the apps or features, but I am not a beta tester. I am using these as my everyday phones and they work as expected.
Held my breath when I rooted/unlocked and installed the new rom's since they were mine and my wife's phones. I did this because I was so pissed LG dropped support for the phone upgrades. Such a good phone to be left at 4.1.2.
Anyone that has an LGOG's on sprint should not have a problem as long as they follow the instructions on rooting and unlocking. Can't say anything about insurance and warranty, though. I found it easier to buy a used phone when one of my other phones lost its screen. Insurance is a racket and is cheaper to just get a used on ebay.
Gave a new lease on life to my phone.
We've all heard rumors that LG is testing the KitKat update on the G and G2, and rumors that AT&T might be getting it on their models... but those are just rumors unfortunately. Nothing's happened so far.
