So I was thinking, on my phone prior to the PLAY I have a Motorola Droid 2 (CDMA) (Motorola Milestone 2 for GSM). Piece of crap Moto phone that I will never buy again. However one thing I was able to do was type in a code via the phone dialer, much like the hidden codes:
*#*#4636#*#*
&
#*#*7378423#*#*
However when I entered a certain code it gave me an option to select a different speech encoder for better sound quality. I have not been able to find anything for the PLAY and it very well may not be available. But I thought I would inquire to the masses if anyone knows anything. When I changed the encoder to a better quality the voices through the earpiece were significantly clearer.
Audio Codec I changed my old phone to for improved clarity was:
EVRC-B
Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions
Edit: I am guessing this codec is for CDMA networks. But still wondering.

Hi, I'm curoius as to what codec is used by the "internet calling" VOIP app in WM 6.0.
And can this be changed?.
Reason being is that my VSP (pennytel) uses the G729 codec and I'm having problems hearing people that I make calls to. The volume is set to high but they are still faint. The other party can hear me clearly and loud.

Hey jayz2005, u're welcome to join the thread here instead of startin a new one =).. i know it's a bit lengthy to go thru...
in a nutshell, WM6.0 uses G.711 by default which is supported by PennyTel (i know coz I use PennyTel too)..G.711 uses 64kb/s encoding which is great for Wifi with broadband connection.. but not on UMTS (3G) or GPRS since the data speed is not garenteed to be faster than 64kb/s in both directions depending on your carrier. (ie: some might give you uber fast d/l but give you peanuts for upstream specifically so that you can't use VOIP)
If you're using PennyTel, I'm assuming you're in australia? Currently the majority of the mobile internet coverage is still tend to fall back to the GPRS network alot if you're making VOIP calls on the move.. including Three's X-Series plans - worse still, they call it "roaming" whenever u drop to GPRS then start to charge you by the kilobyte, and this all happens without you knowing...so if you use it you might hear random frame drops, cracks or total silences and even complete drop-outs.. and G.729, supported by PennyTel, which uses standard 8kb/s and should work well even with GPRS connection, but it's still being developed on the WM6 platform, and some phones might not even have the CPU power to en/decode it...so as PennyTel users we can only rely on G.711 for now, even tho I have GSM610 installed as preferred codec, PennyTel apparently doesnt support it..
Volume is a registry setting somewhere..I tried to look for it again now but couldn't find it.. basically since the sound comes from back speaker, the default has restricted the max volume output to not deafen ppl..
Hope that summary helped.
Thanks!
Well, it has helped me, thanks
I will go an search through the other thread you mentioned now since I still want to know if and how I can change the used codec. My Asterisk tells me the phone is using G.711 u-law, but since I'm in Europe, I'd rather have it set to a-law to minimize conversion costs when calling via the built-in ISDN card.
Hi,
I have a MW600 headset paired to my Play, everything works flawlessly, It is a pair made in heaven everything works... but I have 2 questions...
1. - Is there a way the MW600 display shows de contact name instead of the actual phone number when receiving a call? (I don't like to remember all the numbers on my small contact list...I'm too lazy)
2.- How can I tweak the voice dialing on the headset... It never get my commands rights... I know my english sucks, but not that bad...
Thanks
I have these headphones and am in the same boat as you, I haven't seen anyway to configure them.
For the lack of contact names (as well as song names) I read that it's a limitation with Android and not sending that over bluetooth.
Thanks,
meh, I mean headphones are OK and both headphones and mobile work great together anyway, let's hope an android update can help us with the track info / contact name display issue.
by the way how does your voice dialing works? mine really sucks... is that me (and my spanish accented english) or it just sucks?
Mine isn't too bad, The only problem I face is it disguinishing between two of the same named contacts, For example I have a John Smith and a John Anderson. Sometimes it selects the wrong person.
Like any voice control articulation and low background noise is key

For some reason, if you change the native language for voice (in the system settings) to US English (not UK english or other languages) and you are giving commands in english, you have a lot more accuracy of commands. Even if you are speaking with an accent. I don't know why that is, but it may have something to do with more work being done on the English voice control feedback and voice search profiles than others. (More US english speakers than other native languages on the voice search team, I think).
Where do you change the native language? in system settings under Language & keyboard right?...
i already have it on English USA... I think I just suck at it..
Is there anyway to have the phone in English language and the voice calling in Spanish???
I think that's why my phone do not understand my commands, I live in Mexico, and therefore all my contacts are Mexican Spanish pronunciated names and the system is looking for English sounding words right? It's that even possible???

how long is the xperia play's battery life when connected to bluetooth headset?
thanks.
It is quite good actually, I can go over 24 hrs without playing or 12 hrs with heavy use (3g, gps, casual gaming messaging and emailing and calling if course.)
About the battery on the headset is quite good actually on normal use, it can be affected on heavy use

Yes.
The fm radio works independently of the phone. the mw600 has it built in.
For those trying to get track info in the MW600 *and* want to mess a little with their Play, you should try flashing the latest nightly build of CM7, for me, it works flawlessly, showing track info, and everything else, but didn't test about the caller info because I don't receive so many calls
I own a R800i so it should work with the other GSM models.
It is not an 'Android's limitation' but a 'developer limitation', they just don't want to give the needed support/development for their devices and accesories.
@DanyXP: yep, it's the only way, because the Plays don't have the FM chip builtin
I use the MW600's fm radio mostly because my data plan is limited.
I have one on my r800a works okay, voice dialing is crap, i've disabled it. Range is good enough, sound quality is good no complaints.
Same numbers only on the display which is useless for me because i don't know anyone number, and track names don't always mtach up, depends on the program i'm using to play music.
Guys can someone help me. I have baught a head of sony with the code: DRZX301 but when I put the cable in it says accessoire isn't supported. please can someone help me.
@hexen2006, how's your MW600 doing? I'm planning to get one next week but I have read numerous negative reviews about its ISSUE WITH SUDDENLY DYING BATTERIES after a range of 2 days to 4 months of use in most user experience. Did this happen to you?
Has anyone found a good hands-free blue tooth voice dialer, with confirmation, for the Galaxy Nexus?
The stock Android Voice dialer sux. It never gets the command right, and does not confirm - it just always dials the wrong number. Vsuite (by Nuance) was great on my Droid X2, but it is OEM software for motoblur that will not run on the GN. "Voice Actions" will not seem to work with blue tooth on the GN - maybe a compatibility problem.
"Choice Voice Dial" is also not compatable with ICS. Dev says there are incompatibilities with Android 4.x and he's "looking into it". There are others I've tried that either won't initiate calls with blue tooth, or they don't confirm the "call command" so you never know who you are calling.
I REALLY need to find a good hands free voice dialer for my new GN that works with a blue tooth headset. Has anyone found one they like?
I used to use Vlingo (not sure if on GNex) and thought it worked very well. Can't remember if it confirmed, but worked with BT and very accurate.
I agree that the stock stuff is subpar.
I used Cyberon Voice Commander with a BT headset on my previous HTC Desire and it worked really well. It did do confirmations and I found the matching better because you can record your own 'voice tags' for common contacts, so it is matching against your own voice with a higher success rate. Although the Android Market says it is compatible with the Galaxy Nexus, it is not. The developer has acknowledged this and says a new version should be out soon that will support GNex.
In the meantime, I'm trying a number of different ones (Vlingo, Nuance GO, etc) but haven't really found one that i liked.
Thanks Opus. Nuance Dragon Go might be promising, but it's not ready for ICS yet either. If you find anything, please post back. I'll do the same.

I haven't seen this mentioned but has anybody been able to use a BT headset to make, receive, and control calls? I can't. I get "this feature isn't supported on the connected phone" from my Blueant Q2. I know this was an issue with the Sensation and tried installing the voicedialer.apk but the phone won't allow it to be installed. I installed Vlingo but it crashes the phone and I have to do a reset to get it back. Thoughts? Experiences?
Update. We're apparently screwed. There's no native voice dialer included in ICS. I found one that installs but it loses its connection with the headset as soon as it starts. The folks on the Vivid forum are having the same issue. I tried the apps they discussed but they didn't work either. So I guess we wait for HTC to do something.

Yes... ish
I posted the same question a few days ago, but I got no reply, so I bought the phone anyway and tried. Vlingo sort of works with my jawbone earpiece. What I do not like at all is the fact that it does not confirm the command before dialling, or at least I did not figure out how to set it up properly, with the result of dialing the wrong contact in case of a misunderstanding.
I am really missing the simplicity of the blackberry voice dialler, amongst other things (mostly due, I guess, to my being a newbie with android). It was a no-brainer, whilst all the solutions I have seen for android are slightly more cumbersome.
Thanks to the other thread you linked I think I am going to try cyberon voice commander. I could save a couple of dollars/euros buying their voice dialler, but as far as I can see it needs training to attach voice tags to contacts. I don't like the idea of spending time to do that.
This seems like such a basic feature these days, why the hell hasn't it got it?!!!
this is very disappointing news. all the reviews i looked at mentioned voice dialing as a feature. and i just ordered a blueant q2. just tried using voice dial on my phone menu. awful.
i found a retail site online that says the blueant q2 is not compatible with the htc one x and identified several other bluetooth items (including blueant) that are. i decided to try the jawbone era and have it on order. not as many desirable (to me) features as the q2, but if it works, it will be a step up from nothing.
online site is htcpediadotcom. i don't know how reliable it is; first time i've looked at it.
I only just noticed yesterday that the phone would not send the bluetooth connection to the head unit in my car, even though it was connected to it.
I had to use the phones loudspeaker....
All of the Android phones in the past 2 years have worked fine!
I previously had a Droid 2 Global and teh voice codec was crap on there. Found out there was a way to change what codec your phone uses for voice and it greatly improved the quality of the call. Obvioulsy the same process does not work on Xperia PLAY, and I am aware there is the *#*#7378423#*#* process to enter the secret service menu... but I dont think there is a way to change the codec on our phone... but thought I would at least ask the community to see if anyone knows anything.
Here are the links to what I was referring to in regards to the D2G:
