The problem is one of the most annoying ones you can have: it appears only from time to time and you don't know when and even when it does you don't notice.
Simply my phone is not accessible for others even it shows full range and so on. The message "...the phone is switched off...". This problem occurs in as far as I remember 3 releases of ROMS (full, vanillas, etc). The radio ROM was also changed. I don't remember having such issue in early WM6 or in original 2005.
Since it's not related directly to any of the releases I post it as a new thread.
Now I have 3 options:
1. Downgrade to 2005
2. Throw the unit through the window, wait until end of contract and buy an iPhone
3. Try to fight with T-Mobile UK - which is not really an option since I just recovered from fighting with Orange for over a month
Does any of you experienced such problem?
Any known issues with downgrading to 2005 like ISPL required before flashing original ROM?

Well, I got the answer - couldn't wait and did the downgrade using original ROM. If anyone interested it went without problems. No ISPL needed. Connected, fired-up the exe file and worked OK.
I'll see how about the availability problem.

...installed WM5 and did some tests:
(I have voice mail switched off)
- Call waiting enabled = no calls allowed when GPRS active
- Call waiting disabled = no calls when transferring data (large file) but received when no transfer
- Used W660i SonyEricsson handset - could receive calls regardless of GPRS activity
Rang T-Mobile tech support where they told me that this is network feature that when internet connection is active no calls are allowed and since my voicemail is turned off all callers get message that my phone is switched off. In the light of GPRS specification and my tests this is a bull****.
Now I'm asking anyone on UK T-Mobile Web'n'Walk and who wants to help - please do such test. Just try to call your number from different phone when opening a web-page.
This is pretty important to me - I need internet on the move and don't want to get rid of my MDA.

I'm on T-Mobile UK too and I ran some tests myself and found that you are absolutely correct. When you transfer data you cannot receive phone calls.
I've got an O2 device with me I can do some more tests on and I'll also try and borrow my Wife's Samsung and test that too. I'll post my findings here.

ok, i've just tested this on an O2 3G device and there was no problem, next to try a none windows mobile t-mobile phone.
seems this problem has been around for while and on other networks.

ok, final test and conclusion.
I tested the same o2 phone as above but in a NON 3g area (i.e. gprs only) and found the exact same issue.
conclusion: this seems to affect all types of phone and multiple networks but only when using gprs NOT 3g.
I'm suprised we havent heard more about this problem.

I did some research on the topic last night and found the same info as guys in the thread your linked. It must be that T-Mobile UK operates in NOM-2, which allows to suspend GPRS session only when no data is transferred. When packets are transmitted the device doesn't 'see' incoming calls as it's 'busy' with dealing with the packets. NOM-1 is 'able' to encapsulate information about incoming call into one of the packets and the device is notified about - so it can react, suspend the transmission and pick up the call.
The fact is that our MDA/Artemis uses Class B of GPRS which doesn't allow simultaneous CDA/GPRS at the same time. Even if it can suspend active data transfer it is the network that has to support that feature.
What I must notice is that I had lot more problems wiht this when I was using WM6. It seems that there were some packets transmitted by the system or something. I had my mail set to check servers every 15 mins at the beginning but lately ony once an hour or two. Other soft that could transmit anything was Weather module from SPB or Touch. Now when I'm on WM5 and was checking the issue during loading a page I was unavailable but as soon as a page was completely loaded my phone was accessible back.
My surprise is that if the 'issue' seems to be quite normal and there is nothing to do about it why I couldn't find any info about it here. Doesn't it affect anyone of our community?
I may be wrong with the WM6 expirience but still. If WM6 works fine in that respect it must have happened that someone missed a call when browsing the net.

Did you try ringing your phone when it was loading a long page or downloading a file?
TBH I think I've noticed it just as much on WM6 as I did (or didn't) on WM5, I think I put these odd voice mails turning up down to weird WM issues! Now I know the truth though.
Obv. there isn't a lot we can do about this and I'm not prepared to turn off my Windows Live Mail or my direct push. I think we just have to wait until our contracts are up for renewal and get over to a 3G device - I'm liking the look of the Touch Cruise myself, or the Touch Dual if I want that keyboard back and by the time my contract is up I think they should be on T-Mob UK.
does the same thing happen in Edge areas or as that rolls out will the problem disappear?
I'm not sure about how EDGE works but the problem affects GPRS rather than 3G due to the fact that GPRS and the incoming call are submitted alongside each other and 3G is seperate. I don't think t-mob uk have edge running yet so I can't test, perhpas some else can test for us.
Bro.. My first 3rd party ROM is the Touch 3.0.. and yes.. my connnection did go off once a while (no bars as well).. that was kinda irritating. I have to go to connection manager and toggle my data connection or something like that, before my phone will get the GSM signal.
And yea.. the original WM5 and WM6 have no such issues.. I wonder if this is because of the new radio version..

So i was thinking, cool, sounds like [email protected], he agreed, so i'm actually trying this, turn of phone, keeping only wifi on, and what happens when i dial any number? Of course it tells me the phone is off and if i want to turn it on, so can i use the dash on a wifi connection to make voice calls, or was the t-mobile guy just confusing me?

hahahahahaha You are sooooo lost! you dont know how the network works and i'd bet your paying big time for phone service hahaha oh man thats funy..... ok ok ill tell you how it works its called VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol meaning you will use the internet for making phone calls such as a wifi connection ever heard of phone company VONAGE ? (if your american) well its something like that you will need an internet connection such as a wifi connection and you will only be able to make call when you are connected to to THAT wifi connection you cannot go around and make calls because you will get disconnected from the wifi after you got connected to a wifi spot you will need a service provider I sudgest www.skype.com actually skype rocks its really cheap its like 3 dlls for unlimited usa and 10 dlls for unlimited world or you can get prepaid after that you will need to subcribe and download skype for windows mobile smatphone install the app acess your skype acc and then make a phone call on your wifi network.........
that should save you some money however the thing that sucks about it its that you need to have a wifi connection for it to work or you can get edge or 3g network but you cant i think if your not on your home area....
I sudgest getting your phone sim unlock you can get one for free by contacting tmobile ask for a sim unlock and just use a local sim card you would pay much less than with roaming and you would not need a wifi connections to make phone calls.

It actually works
I obtained a t-mobile dash recently and I am having a similar issue. The phone recognizes my sim card, but will not connect to t-mobile's network. If, however I have wireless on, my phone will make calls, and naturally internet. I am not entirely sure what is going on here, but using an access point for calls actually does work.
themitch - Considering the HTC Dash will not work on the T-Mobile hotspot service and will not make VOIP calls without considerable modifications (unless you install skype or another third party voip client) you are blowing smoke. The HTC Dash simply does not have the software or the hardware to connect to a wifi hotspot for calls without help.
Now you can modify the Dash to work on the T-Mo at home service (and other wifi networks) but it requires installing some files, editing the registry and knowing how to hack your router to get the required information out of it to enter into your Dash.

The Dash does not have the hardware or software to make calls over the internet or wifi (without considerable help) not to mention the EDGE / GPRS network is specifically designed to make this next to impossible to happen.
Are you sure your not turning on and off the PHONE radio, turning on the wifi will NOT detect a GSM or EDGE network the hardware in the phone does not work that way.
Now it is possible you have the one in a billion HTC Dashes that can do this lol but I doubt it. Proof? its called Video bro, take a video of what your phone does and share it up

I've been using VoIP (Internet Calling) over wifi on my Dash for months. I've tested several VoIP providers and have had very little setup issues. Currently my provider is Gizmo which has been great. I have tweeked the registry so my wifi connection is G (as opposed to B) and have tested at numerous cafes that offer free access. The overall quality is very useable but not the quality of that of cell service.

We know it can be done, whats being 'debated' here is whether the topic starters out of the box Dash is doing it with no modifications and if so why.

Bottom line Daniel is that you have options for wifi voice calls. Setup a Skype, Fring, or similar 3rd party software account or setup up a SIP account like Gizmo, install two or three readily available cabs and use the Internet Calling feature MS designed into the operating system.

And as stated you can not make VOIP calls with out system modifications, as you show here (and as I stated) you need to install third party applications and cab files which modify the HTC Dash system. Thus, the answer is NO the T-Mobile rep is quite wrong, the HTC Dash as recieved from T-Mobile will NOT make WiFi / VOIP calls out of the box.
I would be nice if you did not attempt to confuse the facts, it makes communicating with others difficult.

As stated time and time again, the T-Mobile rep is wrong no HTC Dash sold will work out of the box over IP (voip) nor will it work on the Hotspot, nor will you be able to circumvent roaming by connecting over WiFi for calls, it cant happen. ps morfic I feel your pain … I got the $429 bill my daughter ran up using her phone when she was in France for 10 days … I made sure that didn’t happen again when she went back for 4 months by sending her with a phone setup to take advantage of VoIP using wifi. Just so you know the quality of the call was in direct relationship to the quality of the wifi connection.

I have installed several different WM variations, and in every case, the phone only detects the t-mobile network after I turn on the wireless-g connection. I am assuming this is some kind of hardware malfunction at this point, but I am hoping someone knows more about these phones can explain what is going on and how I can fix it.
Oh, and yes, I am smart enough to know the difference between the phone radio and the wireless button in the com manager Bupahs. I have owned several pda's and smartphones, and I know the difference. You may think I am stupid, but since I have not and do not claim to be using voip, your comments are unnecessary. I need help, not some jerk telling me I am blowing smoke. I will post a video for you after I get the phone put back together, as I have disassembled it to see if something is shorted on the panel or something. Hopefully that will satisfy you.

Aww thats cute.
Its not a wild leap if you actually read what he wrote. Obviously the T-Mo rep thought the Dash was set up for use on the WiFi @Home service (like many of T-Mos current phones) and gave incorrect information. I cleared it up for him that its not and wont make voip calls without help. You got your feelings hurt when it was pointed out your not contributing to the discussion. Using 'big words' now is not helping your case.

Now that would seem you are saying what you wrote, that your Dash makes calls over the access point, in other words WiFi. What you wrote here clearly infers your Newly acquired Dash makes voip calls and not normal radio calls. Perhaps you should take more care in what you write to avoid this type of miscommunication in the future huh?

The ultimate objective is to allow those with Skype subscriptions to get unlimited anytime calling across North America if they pay the $2.95 / month for the Skype plan and have unlimited data...

It installs fine and theoretically works great, however, there are a number of issues:
1. Skype automatically routes all audio to the speakerphone.
To route the audio to the earpieces, install audioRoute from Teksoft:

It essentially installs an icon in your taskbar that loads when the phone starts up. Once you open Skype, you click the icon, select the first icon, which is the earpiece, and then all audio will get routed to the earpiece when using Skype.
To route the audio to a Bluetooth headset, then install A2DP toggle from Teksoft:

This program should theoretically allow you to select the Bluetooth headset when Skype is loaded. It should theoretically be able to be loaded concurrently with audioRoute. I have not tested it fully.
2. Skype will not work unless connected to a wifi connection
I had tested Skype and thought it worked flawlessly until someone with an iPhone mentioned that he had to install some sort of program to "trick" Skype into thinking it was connected to a Wifi. I believe that this is an issue with the way Microsoft has designed Windows Mobile, but is probably intential to prevent competition for telecommunication company voice packages. This issue supposedly does not exist with Windows Mobile clients.
Just ensure that ActivSync/Wifi/Mobile is enabled under the Connection settings.
3. Skype Mobile does not support video calling
I'm not sure if this is a software issue or just something that can be hacked. I see no reason why this functionality would be disabled in the Mobile version of Skype... any insight would be appreciated.
Would love it if anyone else is experiencing problem 2 as well... I want to find out if it's isolated to my handset... or even to just my carrier.

No problem here on a Vodafone TP2. Skype uses the 3G connection fine.
You know that htere's a setting that tells Skype what connection(s) to use? It defaults to "Use ActiveSync/Wifi" but can be changed to "Use ActiveSync/Wifi/Mobile"

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but I have made calls through Skype on my TyTN II using the Australian Three 3G network. Called my wife on her mobile in Shanghai with no problems. Well, the connection was pretty horrible (I think it's a bit hard work for both the phone and the network) but it connected fine for as long as I wanted.
As tjobbins said, in the Connection Method settings, I can "Use ActiveSync/WiFi" or "Use ActiveSync/WiFi/Mobile"... so if I'm overseas, I leave it on the first one; in Australia on the second one.

I'm interested in how this works. I own the Titan at the moment and Skype only works over Wifi. Do you know if Skype plans on fixing the problem with calls only being heard from speaker phone? Any update on video calling?

We can only hope. Skype have their forums and I saw a number of posts complaining about those missing features. I guess we should add our voices, though I would expect it will take a while for it to be fixed; the current version for Windows Mobile, Skype 3, was released fairly recently.
One alternative to look at is Fring. It supports better audio routing, i.e. calls are not only on speakerphone - they can come through the normal phone earpiece, or a bluetooth headset. Don't think it does video. As well as Skype, it also supports MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, AIM and others, so it's a good all-in-one client.
However on the TP2 Fring does currently have one quite annoying issue - it doesn't seem to work on Wifi. It's fine on mobile/3G connections, but on Wifi it won't list access points or connect. This is reported on their forums but no sign of a fix yet. Actually I did once get it connect to WiFi, but I don't really know how and haven't been able to repeat it.
Oh I just remembered the other huge problem with Skype for Windows Mobile - it doesn't list your phone contacts!
Bloody useless when you want to make a Skype Out call, and you end up having to go into the contact record, copy their number, and then paste it into Skype. Really daft.
Fring does list your contacts, and you can use it for Skype Out as well as Fring's own paid-for outbound dialling system.
I have another problem: NO notifications! So i don't know if someone chats or phone me! It's useless in that way!

Thanks for the suggestion. I want to make sure that I'm using only data-only when making calls, since I have unlimited data... and limited daytime voice minutes.
I installed fring, and it doesn't show the TP2 as a supported device. When I launched it, it kept asking me to find a WLAN... except nothing shows up on the list! Wifi is enabled AND data is enabled, and it keeps showing Not Available...
Has it worked on your TP2?

Nope. See my post before the one you quoted! It doesn't work on WiFi on the TP2 at the moment - and also on some other WM devices I think.
Works great on 3G and ActiveSync, just doesn't work on WiFi.
Except.. once for me it did. It suddenly connected and I don't know how or why. Haven't managed to repeat it yet though. But maybe there's a workaround lying in there waiting to be (re) discovered

No no - I had wifi disabled and just tried to use regular data connection... but it couldn't find the connection for some reason.
Hate to bump an old thread... but I finally got Fring working on my TP2 (latest version), but SkypeOut calls don't actually direct to the Earpiece... I don't hear anything. Loudspeaker works fine.
I have a US T-Mob G2 and sipdroid installed on it. Using VoIPfone which is in the UK. I have a speedtest app installed which shows 5 mbps download speed 3 mbps upload. I posted this message to another forum where it was moved involuntarily to the Android Q&A but I am pretty sure it isnt an Android problem. I am using 2.3.4 which is auto-updated by T-Mobile. I have been CID&SIM unlocking and flashing Wizards, Hermeses, Blue Angels, Wings for over five years but never thought to do anything to this phone and wonder if that may be the problem now, as T-Mobile has their own VoIP service to prevent you from sidestepping their plan-minutes. Curiously there have been 142 views of my question with no suggestions whatsoever. Again, I am pretty sure it isnt an Android problem.
People report that they can hear me clear as a bell on Sipdroid but I can hear almost nothing. I hear a half second of incoming sound followed by a second or two of silence, then another half second of sound, repeating about 10 times till all incoming sound stops completely.
VoIP provider (Voipfone) says yes, some other users OF THEIRS have reported this problem and this is an inherent problem with Android and Android users cant use VoIP. They allude to some mysterious latency problem (which is identifiable on line, - except that users say it affects OUTGOING sound, not incoming so): I say baloney: There is something wrong with their server. Or can T-Mob recognise that I am trying to use VoIP and I suppose there is a remote chance they are blocking something to prevent me using any VoIP service other than their own (which uses their minutes!!). Cant imagine what they could do to stop me but i can sure imagine why they would want to try! The symptoms do look suspiciously like blocking?
Has anyone else noticed this problem with Sipdroid or any other VoIP app on a G2 or (as I have to think more likely) with Voipfone? Voipfone have been quite negative about trying Acrobits etc.
After tons and tons of problems using sip viop. I ended up using gvoice plus groove ip. Works perfect and in latest versions they have tons of fixes for no voice and such. Dosent use minutes and can be used over 3g and 4g. Hope this helps.

weird results when phone connected to computer
Since i posted, I discovered that Sipdroid works perfectly when connected to a computer with a hard wire! When unplugged, it continues to work fine. You can even walk around the flat and the connection continues to work fine! As soon as I try to MAKE a call, the problems re-emerge.
I posted these results on the Sipdroid forum and the moderators dont seem to have let this problem be public (yet?)

I agree with you. It is not a problem of Android. I would suggest you to go for a trial service with another VOIP service provider and see the difference. I am sure you will not face this issue. I am using VOIP service on my Android from the The Real PBX. And actually it is working fine with me. It may be the issue of the SIP client they are providing with their service as well.
VIOP problems
I have always used voip in conjunction with a home asterisk server, PBXes, Sipgate and Google Voice over wifi. I have not used T-mobile's service, so I can offer little help, there, regarding circumventing any of their blocks.
The problems you're describing, one way audio, could be related to STUN, NAT or the use of an incompatible codec. Usually, codec. I do not use STUN. The most compatible codec would be ulaw, or alaw in Europe. Sipdroid is not the friendliest client, I rather use Android's (gingerbread or better) built-in or CSipSimple. CSipSimple is the best out there for easy setup. I has numerous host profiles built right in the setup wizard.

Thanks guys the problem must be with Sipdroid: I see their forum is replete with questions and NO answers for months on end. I will try to see whether the other apps integrate different codecs or different ways of using STUN?
The curious thing is that the provider semi-officially recognises Sipdroid on their site which makes it a bit surprising that they cant isolate the problem in my case.
I was searching the 32GB + WiFi + LTE on BestBuy and Amazon but I haven't found nothing. Why?

Probably because Google hasn't released it yet.
Come on, did you really need to ask that question? A simple search would have shown that it's not scheduled to be released for another few weeks, if not longer. The N73G didn't come out until a month or two after the Wi-Fi models did.

Out of the box? According to this link, no.
I use the original Nexus (wifi only) as a phone though with a verizon 4g hotspot. VOIP calling over mobile broadband (4g) is just as good if not better than calls over GSM. Really I'll be surprised if VOIP calls don't become more common than PSTN in 5 or 6 years. Especially since SIP to SIP calls are free (it's really not much different than emailing someone).
Search for tutorials by acegolfer in this forum if you're interested in how to set this up.
VOIP over LTE with, for example, Google Voice plus Groove IP is the way to go. I use that nearly 100% of the time on my phone even plus you have the benefits of switching numbers on the fly (work/personal) and the management features like blocking numbers, do not disturb, etc. are great.
Every single time someone asks about whether the N7 can do voice calling, people always want to chime in with irrelevant suggestions. The question is whether it can make standard GSM calls over the carrier's network, not whether you can make VoIP calls. Of course you can do that, just like you can use Skype, Google Hangouts, etc. - but that's not the question.
That's like someone asking if it can run MS Office and responding back, sure, it can do that if you install an RDP or VNC client and connect to your desktop and launch office from your computer. Two completely different things.
As I said earlier, the N73G can NOT place carrier voice calls. There are two threads in it's respective forum where people, a year later, still think that feature is "just around the corner" - it's not. Whether or not the new N7-LTE can do that is still up in the air. But there is a big difference between using VoIP and being able to make/receive calls natively.
And as someone who works with VoIP professionally (SIP specifically) on a daily basis, I completely disagree that using a VoIP application over 3G/LTE is just as good as a standard GSM call. It's not. If all you care about is making the occasional call to a friend or family member, sure, it's a perfectly fine alternative. But if you are talking about using it as a frequently used method of making and receiving calls to replace your cell phone with - absolutely not. Especially not for business purposes. The call quality will almost certainly not be better than GSM, unless you are using a high bandwidth codec like G711. And even then you will have to deal with common issues like packet loss, jitter, high latency spikes, etc. which will likely negate any benefits. Trying to use it while moving between towers can result in dropped calls if your IP changes. Even having it in standby will cause you to lose registration and thus possibly miss inbound calls. And don't even get me started on the battery life.

You don't have to flip out. They are just trying to be helpful and there are plenty of people who don't realize what they can and can't do. Also, for work, I would much rather use BBM voice over my cdma call.
