[Q] Flashing TWRP 2.6 via Odin - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi folks,
AT&T Galaxy S3 4.1.2 stock no root, trying to flash TWRP 2.6 to my phone. Using ODIN, phone in download mode, flashed the .tar file via the PDA option, all succesful, but when I try to boot into recovery via Power/Volume Up/Home, I see it say "Recovery Booting" and then it just proceeds to boot normally without going into recovery. Any ideas?

Root your phone
Download Goo manager from market/play store
Open goo manager
Grant superuser access
Press menu button on phone
Select "install open script recovery"
Confirm yes a couple times
Should now have twrp recovery

ClockwordMod, ROM Manager and Recovery

So i'm having a few issues with ClockwordMod and/or ROM Manager
from within ROM Manager when I hit flash clockworkmod it'll download and give me confirmation of success, but I can't seem to launch it - is it supposed to automatically launch after I enter recovery mode? Was it supposed to change any menu entries after I hit volume up+power?
I ended up downloading clockwordmod as update.zip and running it from sdcard:update.zip
Additionally, Reboot into Recovery from ROM manager doesn't do anything. It asks if i'm sure, I say yes, then nothing happens. QuickBoot however has no problems rebooting straight into the recovery menu though, and I can also do it from ADB. Am I missing something obvious?

Flashing clockworkmod as an update.zip will do no changes to your current recovery.
If you want to replace your current phone's recovery with clockworkmod simply search for unrevoked on these forums.
I have the same problem, it is a bug with ROM manager, you have to give the app superuser permissions before clicking any of the options, so if you were to do this then on your first install of the app click on flash recovery (even if you have it), it will ask for superuser permissions, grant them it and the app will then work fine.
ahh it'd be good if it told you that
next I went into it and went to install superuser but of course you need to have superuser to do that :|
But i'm there now, thanks for your help

Rebooting in Recovery Mode

I have several apps that should allow me to reboot in recovery mode like, Android Overclock, App Manager Pro and ROM Manager. But every time I select to boot my device into Recovery mode within those apps, it just boots up normally. How can I boot my device into Recovery Mode?
EDIT: NM, I was able to flash DooMLoRD's update.zip for his v07 Kernel through ROM Manager.
how did u do that i got rom manager how did u flash update.zip?

[GUIDE/HOWTO] Root, CWM, Custom ROMs and stock ROMs for Koodo/Telus SGH-T989D Users

If you have a newly bought Samsung Galaxy S II X, a.k.a. SGH-T989D from either Koodo or Telus, then you are in the right place. Follow this guide to root your device, install ClockworkMod recovery or return to stock ROMs.
I decided to make this guide because the rooting/CWM installation method is a bit different for our Koodo/Telus devices.
ClockworkMod Installation:
A. First of all, install the latest version of Samsung Kies from the Samsung website. This will ensure that you have the latest drivers install for your device.
Samsung Download Link: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/SW/201211/20121115133026145/KiesSetup.exe
B. Download Odin. Inside this .zip file, you will find the Odin program (a Samsung testing application used for flashing certain partitions of a device), a configuration file for Odin that will pre-select appropriate options within Odin so that you don't have to mess with any of the options (this reduces the risk of bricking) and the PIT script (which Odin reads so that it knows where exactly on our device the partition going to be flashed is located).
MediaFire Download Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?wwnzl4lnk6m3ll0
C. Now let's learn how to put your phone into "Download Mode". The "Download Mode" allows Odin to write to specific partitions on our phone.
On our phone, while powered off, the key combination to enter "Download Mode" is Volume Down + Power. Hold down the keys until the phone vibrates and then let go of the Power key while still holding down the Volume Down key. A screen similar to the one shown below should appear on your phone (coming soon).
Press Volume Up to continue into Download Mode.
D. Run Odin. While your phone is in Download Mode, connect the USB cable into your phone and the computer. Odin should now be able to detect your phone on a COM port.
E. Now that your phone is in Download Mode and Odin detects it, you are now ready to flash ClockworkMod recovery or any other recovery of your choice to it. Following are a few links to common recoveries. Pick anyone you like. But if you don't know much about recoveries, I recommend you just pick the offical Touch ClockworkMod Recovery.
Official ClockworkMod Recovery: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?wjm90gwjcvg4ccc
Official ClockworkMod Touch Recovery: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bpr3dd11747zgcc
F. You should now have a .tar package containing the ClockworkMod recovery image and the Odin package. Put your phone into Download Mode and connect it to your computer making sure Odin sees it. On the right side you should see a button that says "PDA". Press it. Browse to where you downloaded the .tar package containing the recovery image. Your Odin screen should look like this (coming soon):
G. Press "Start" and it should now flash your device with the ClockworkMod recovery package. Once the flashing is done, your phone will reboot normally. Congratulations! You have successfully installed ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone.
Rooting your stock firmware (Requires ClockworkMod recovery to be installed):
A. Download the latest Superuser package from here: http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
B. Place the .zip package on your SD card anywhere. Just make sure to remember where you store it.
C. Turn off your phone and boot into recovery. This is done by holding down Volume Up + Volume Down + Power while the phone is turned off.
D. You will now be in ClockworkMod Recovery. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to navigate and the power key as a return/enter key.
E. Select the "Install zip from sdcard". Then select "choose zip from external sdcard" or "choose zip from internal sdcard" depending on where you placed the .zip package.
F. Browse to the location of the .zip package and select it. Browse down the confirmation list to "Yes - Install blah blah" and press enter. It will now install Superuser.
G. You will now be returned to the "install zip from sdcard" menu. Press back to go back to the main menu and select "reboot system now". Your device will boot up normally.
H. Browse through the app drawer, you should see the Superuser app. Congratulations! You have successfully rooted your device.
GUIDE STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION. PLEASE BE PATIENT. SCREENSHOTS COMING SOON.

[Q] cant install root file from internal storage?

Hey guys im trying to root my device so i can install some lightweight custom roms. Ive been following this guide i found online
http://androidcritics.com/how-to-root-and-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-galaxy-s3-i747/
I basically did this
Installing Clockwork Recovery Mod
Find the recovery image file which is clockworkmod.tar
On your Samsung Galaxy S3 I747, press and hold down the volume down, power, and home buttons
Once your at the warning screen, press volume up to accept
Launch the Odin program from your computer
In Odin, find the PDA tab and click it
Find the clockworkmod.tar.md5 file in the unzipped recovery image file
Press start to begin flashing the recovery mod
BE PATIENT! and wait until your device reboots
Once your device has fully rebooted, you can start installing root
It loaded on the phone fine. I then did this
Installing Root
Transfer the root.zip file onto your phone from your computer
Make sure you connect your s3 to your computer and find the root zip file and put it in your downloads folder.
Enter clockwork recover mod by holding down the volume up, power, and home buttons
Navigate by using the volume buttons to Install Zip > Choose Zip from Internal SD card > Navigate to the downloads folder> Select
Be Patient! and wait until your device is finished
Once the process is finished, you can select Reboot
Once your device has rebooted, launch the Google Play Store app
Search “SuperuserSU” and select the first app that shows in the search results
Install this app
Once it has finished installing, your done!
The only problem is I cant navigate to the option "install zip from internal sd card" I simply dont have though's options here is what I have when hold volume up reset and home
"reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage (which i dont have)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
When i hit apply update from ADB it says "now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>"...
Im wondering if the original flash didnt go thru? Why dont I have the options that I should?
Any help would mean the world trying to get this puppy up asap!

Sounds like the root method you are using is just way to complicated. Follow this one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 it has prerooted firmwares that you just install with odin and you are done (cwm included). Just make sure you grab the right firmware for your carrier.
If I have helped you out, slap that thanks button.

Beauty I think its flashing the rogers rom to my phone from there Im good to load other roms using this odin tool? (or is it rom manager?)
also what is this clockwork mod ? I might as well go into play store and get both rom manager and clockwork?

So After I flashed the new rom to my phone i left it plugged in and it restarted. Android loader popped on and now it says android is upgrading... starting apps. Its been like this for over a half an hour... what do i do??? helpppp dont really want to reset it but it is bricked? or do i have to reload ?
update:
held the restart button down it restarted bit is still stuck on starting apps.
update two:
held vol down home and reset tried to reload the rogers rom onto the phone and now it stops at samsung load screen. Do i have to reload the carrier that came with the phone? I cant quite remember what the original carrier was.
UPDATE THREE:
I as able to boot back into the phone but...nothing changed? i ended up wiping the phones data in settings because its too full as it is. I downloaded root checker and it said access was denied ? That makes its not rooted after all... I followed the directions seems that they didnt take? Any clues?

Okay buddy looks like you need to learn some basic android 101
You are definitely not ready to root or do anything til you learn this stuff...
Okay, so first is recoveries. Basically recoveries are a bit of software that let's you flash ROMs, kernels, and whatever else to your phone. When you hold volume up and power when your phone is off, you boot to recovery. Now basically recoveries are necessary because when you are flashing a new ROM it essentially deletes the android system from your phone first so this is a way of your phone still working between flashes.
Clockworkmod is a custom recovery with a lot of features meant for flashing ROMs. There are competitors such as TWRP (team win recovery project) but clockworkmod is a great starter. Use videos or tutorials on how to use it before you flash your first ROM. I can not stress how often you need to read read and read some more.
Okay so rooting your phone. Basically there is a "root" directory of your phone. Its where all the system files are stored and it let's you do a lot of stuff, but it also means you can screw a lot of stuff up to (like really screw it up). On default you are locked out of here by the maker of your phone for various reasons. Rooting means that someone found an exploit to gain access to this folder. Usually what you then do is you find a way to inject superuser (a little app that gives root access to other apps later on). You use Odin in this case to install a stock Samsung rom (with superuser already put in the root directory of that modified ROM its installing) essentially this means you have root. Root allows you to install recoveries like clockworkmod (which you need to flash ROMs later.
Okay so that was my quick run through. At your point you need to go to YouTube and Google how to root the sgs3 and hopefully they should have one for your specific carrier. The process should be the same minus the files you flash. Essentially you should be looking for stock ROM (for your specific device) with superuser or supersu already installed. Then you should be finding a way to install clockworkmod once you have root. (You may be able to find a file or tutorial that does this in one go). I cannot emphasise enough about reading. You wouldn't be here had you read first and in the flashing business, if you don't want a sgs3 paper weight you should read first.
Oh and ROMmanager from the marketplace installs clockworkmod for you (ONCE YOU HAVE ROOT) its simple. Just download it from the play story. Click flash recovery. It will load a bit and your done. Then you can reboot into it. ROM manager (the paid version is unnecessary) it just adds extra features you don't yet need. Look at it once you have flashed your first few ROMs.
Best of luck. Let me know and slap that thanks button. I wrote this on my phone.

Hi eddy,
It sounds like you didn't get CWM to stick after your flash with ODIN. You need to uncheck the reboot option in odin and then after the flash is done pull the battery and go directly into CWM loader by booting with the volume up + power + home button method. This will give you cwm rather than the stock loader you seem to be trying to use. You're almost there!

I think he can't install the superuser.zip from cwm after boot because he's allowing the stock rom to overwrite his cwm flash ... he's gotta pull his battery after the odin flash to get root in. That's what worked for me. once he's got root he can use rom manager to upgrade to cwm 6.x

He shouldn't need cwm to install. If flashes a firmware with root already injected he can then just use rom manager to install clockworkmod for the first time since rom manager just needs root which he will have. You can root and keep the stock recovery on at the same time
I think his biggest issue is root not sticking. Til he does that cwm wont install

[Q] Cannot boot in TWRP recovery mode!

Hi there,
I am using Note II International Variant..
I am very new to flashing and putting custom ROMs.
Before I started, I wanted to backup my ROM that I am currently having. I understand that TWRP is the best tool to do this.
So I decided to backup my ROM using TWRP.
The problem is, I am not able to boot into TWRP recovery mode. I tried the GooManager and Odin methods and it failed.
In ODIN its going to the RESET status and rebooting the device.(Attached)
Every time its taking me to the android system recovery page. Dont know what to do and I am really stuck.
Note: Before trying all this, I had installed something called ROM Manager and had tried to install the ClockRecoveryMode from there. But I never tried using that.
Update 18.07.2013 Tried DD method and failed.
Goo manager cannot install TWRP on the Note 2, so you were right in using the ODIN method.
I am trying to understand what is "android system recovery page". After you install the recovery with ODIN, does it boot into Android? Does it go to download mode? Or does it go to stock recovery?
Usually you can boot into recovery by turning the phone on while holding VOL UP + HOME BTN + POWER for 4-5 seconds while the "Samsung galaxy note II" is on the screen and then releasing the power button until it goes into recovery. Or, if you're lazy like me, open Goo Manager, press MENU and select Reboot Recovery.

What I meant is the android system recovery screen which has the following info on the screen..
Doing VOL UP + HOME BTN + POWER for 4-5 seconds is taking me to this screen rather than the TWRP screen.
ANDROID SYSTEM RECOVERY <3e>
SAMSUNG SYSTEM RECOVERY UTILS
-FOR BML-
-REBOOT SYSTEM NOW
-APPLY SDCARD:UPDATE.ZIP
-WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET
-WIPE CACHE PARTITION
I am normally rebooting the device after that. I recently noticed that in ODIN once I connect the device the box is not turning yellow despite installing the latest samsung drivers. In the download mode,on the device, its showing the no. of custom recovery attempts done.

Are you rooted? If you are you could try installing the recovery a terminal emulator with DD:
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9
Try that and see if it works!
Yes I am rooted. Will try the DD mode and let u know.

I'll not be able to help you in TWRP recovery mode since i have not tried it.
I tried CWM recovery and this is how i installed CWM:
1) download CWM tar.md5 file
2) flashed in ODIN mode and after refresh it started booting into normal mode
3) while rebooting into normal mode, i pressed Volume UP + HOME+ POWER key and i was in CWM mode.
4) after making the changes and pressed reboot system in CWM it asked for disabling Stock recovery and i pressed yes.
5) I think even i got Reset during flashing but not sure about it.

I tried the DD method just now. Nothing happened. It again went to the android recovery page.
Did you do it with superuser permissions (typing SU before issuing the DD command)?
what does terminal emulator output after you do it?

I have been searching for HOURS to find out how to boot into twrp and EVERYTHING, everything on this site and everywhere else has said vol. down + home + power that just takes me to download mode and I can't understand what they're doing differently. THANK YOU, RANDOM COMMENT FROM YEARS AGO
for anyone there who still needs help
hey guys i found a solution to this problem. i know its late to reply to this post but anyone who still face this issue might find this method useful. so just after flashing the recovery when the device restarts hold the vol. up and home key instantly. try this method again and again. once you are on time it will definitely boot in twrp. i got this in the very first time lucky huh ??
please press the thanks button if this helped (will help for sure )
An easier way, in my opinion to flash TWRP, is to open Odin, uncheck everything except f reset time, flash twrp, when you the word "reset" in the status window, remove USB cable from the phone, remove battery, replace battery, press the volume up, home, and power button. Once the phone starts to boot, release the power button. This is necessary because allowing the phone to reboot on its own after installing TWRP causes the stock recovery to overwrite TWRP upon auto reboot.

This is necessary because allowing the phone to reboot on its own after installing TWRP causes the stock recovery to overwrite TWRP upon auto reboot.
