[Q] Recoverey error, error mounting cache - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Okay i am not new to flashing and rooting but i am really stuck right now lol, i bought my galaxy S3 two days ago and i wanted to root it and flash cm 10.1 on it.. i got it rooted and flashed the recovery and every time i load up the recovery it shows that's it cannot get the partition size and cannot read/write cache.. am i doing something wrong? I used the Samsung GS3 toolkit V.7.0.0 and even downgraded the firmware from 4.1.2 to 4.1.1 thinking that it was the root of the problem but that didn't work either.. I also noticed that when i flashed the TWRP recovery it prompted me to use a password as if the cache is encrypted..
any advice would be great!
(P.S. if there is already a thread that i haven't found about on this topic sorry!)

The new S3 have added security measures built in by Samsung or Sprint but the recoveries had to be modded in order for them to work. It appears to affect newer than 2 months. Here is the thread you will need http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44262749 also CM roms or AOSP style roms seem to not flash. There's something they have to figure out what else was modded on the new phones.
And yes there's been a whole help of threads on this topic, most locked by mods as this has been covered in the threads for the recoveries themselves.

New GS3 owner, few questions

Hey everyone, I just purchased a GS3 from T-Mobile yesterday and it's great so far. I know what root, flashing roms and all that good stuff is. Now I have a few questions pertaining to this thread, I cannot post there yet, so please bear with me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687
1.) I updated the GS3 to the official JB rom via Kies. Do I need to install those drivers from this thread as Windows 7 Ultimate x64 said I installed ADB and the USB drivers and such?
2.) I know how to use Odin, but since I'm on official JB, I have read that some folks are having their counters go up from flashing the stock rooted JB rom from this thread. Is it true? Is there an up to date app that can reset the counter for the T-Mobile GS3 T999?
3.) I don't intend to flash any other custom roms at the moment, stock is good enough for me for now. When I decide to do so, will flashing CWM via the Play Store app (I have premium) cause the counter to tick upwards? Will flashing any CWM based roms afterwards cause the counter to increase?
I appreciate any help and I want to protect this phone since it cost me an arm and a leg with the insurance and such. I'm coming from a rooted Galaxy S2 that I lost during vacation and I bought the GS3 at full retail. If all else fails, in case my phone acts up, I will simply "accidentally" drop it in the toilet, lol.
1. Kies includes drivers so you should be good there.
2 & 3. Check the info/research thread linked in my sig. Everything we know so far is there, including answers to your ?s.
At the very least read the post linked in the op.

Thanks, I appreciate the direction you took me. I will research more thoroughly now that I have the info I was looking for.
Since I don't intend to flash any custom roms at the moment, will flashing the rooted stock rom with the stock recovery in the link I posted cause the counter to tick up? I see that there is an app called Triangle Away, is it up to date for us official JB users?
I just need a few more post before I can post elsewhere, for now I'm using this thread until I can otherwise.
*UPDATE*
I successfully flashed the rooted stock rom and I can confirm it is clean.

update/unroot phone?

I have a galaxy s3 from sprint which I rooted many months ago and is currently running android 4.04, It is constantly asking me to update however every time I do it always fails. I've looked around the forums and from what I learned I believe that the only way to update is to unroot and update or to install a rom with jelly bean. I experimented with a few roms including CM10, AOKP and liquid smooth but all of these had problems with sending text messages where long messages would not send or even short messages were split into multiple messages. So unless anyone knows a fix to this I prefer to stick to the stock rom for now at least.
That being said I would like to update my phone to jelly bean. Does anyone know a way for me to do this? If unrooting is the only way does anyone know how I can unroot my phone? All of the post I've ran into are either old(don't trust really old post as methods tend to change as time pases) or don't give enough information aside from "install original firmware". If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated. I have a mac computer so any methods that could be used with a mac would make things easier. Otherwise I could always run windows with bootcamp so not a big problem.
If it helps I rooted my phone using Odin and currently have CWM, its a sprint galaxy s3 running 4.04
Liquid smooth doesn't have that problem anymore

In order to OTA update the phone you need to be on a stock rom with all the stock apps installed and have a the stock recovery installed. (not CWM).
You could try to just reflash the stock recovery (which is what I did.) You could also just flash the current stock rom in Odin, which may or may not cause you to lose data. Dig around for all the roms and the stock recovery in the development forum.
Two things:
1. Please search. This has been asked (insert large number here) times
2. Head over to freezas thread and flash the MB1 firmware update. Then find a rom that is updated to either MA4 and up (including MB1) and flash it. I would recommended The Peoples ROM or MOAR (Mother of All Roms) if you wanna stay on a nice stock rooted rom
But thats it and you're done. Fully updated to JB

You don't even need to flash all the firmware, could just flash a rooted deodexed or odexed mb1 rom and modem if you like, but it's not necessary.

[Q] Failure to apply 4.3 update on my nexus 7

For a few months or so I've been running my tablet on the 4.2.2 update and have had the device rooted and never really took advantage of said rooting and so decided to undo it.
Just to check I downloaded Root Checker to verify root was undone and it says that it has, including apps that needed root access no longer work, however there are some small issues that struck me as odd; 1. When going into fastboot mode it still says that it's unlocked, unless that's referring to the bootloader which is still unlocked, 2. I still have custom recovery installed unless that's an issue in which I can undo if need be, 3. Whenever attempting to apply the 4.3 update it reboots my device as it says it will, but upon getting to the google splash screen it goes right into custom recovery when it attempts to apply the update but suddenly goes to the custom recovery main menu without applying the update.
And finally when going back to my settings and it says my system is up to date.
So is there a step that I missed in unrooting my tablet? If so please let me know, I'd like to update to 4.3 as soon as possible and take advantage of it's new features.
Namely the Open GSL 3.0 has me intrigued.
You have the old nexus 7 tab. This is the forum for the new one. The new one launched on 4.3 and I think the old one is in the process of otas.
And for any device you need stock recovery to take an ota. Any further questions need to be addressed in the proper forum.

Thanks I guess? I must have misunderstood, when I clicked the forum link I didn't see anything distinguishing it from the old one to the new one.

Well at the time I didn't think anything of it and assumed it was the same forum as before and didn't bother to look as I rarely did before.

[Q] 4.3 new and KNOX seceurity

I was reading on un rooting and flashing a stock rom for the s3 sense the 4.3 update. originally I was looking for why I am not able to flash roms. well i still am unsure really and thought, you know what. why not flash a older stock rom reroot and go from there. then i found this web site telling how to do that and as i was reading it i read that there was a different counter besides the flash counter and that there is no way to reset it. So whats up with this new KNOX seceurity. will this cause problems when trying to send it back to the company for any reason? It seems to be causing problems with being able to flash roms.
im using philz touch 6.0.x.x something like that. and also my rom manager which i paid for isnt downloading squat. just says it is but doesn't show progress just shows like the prep. and i keep getting the status 7 error when trying to flash. I read that maybe cause it wasnt the official cwm recovery but i have sprint and read somewhere that philz touch is the only one that will work with sprints 4.3 update and being rooted.
cause after i flashed stock to get this update and tried to root it wouldnt recgonize it till i used philz touch.
dam this sh!ts confusing haha.
and that was more or less alot of random things that just a question about one thing. sorry guys.

It actually will cause a problem. The KNOX warranty viod count will go to one. To my Knowledge there is no way to reset that yet.Samsung KNOX addresses platform security with a comprehensive three-pronged strategy to secure the system: Customizable Secure Boot, ARM TrustZone -based Integrity Measurement Architecture (TIMA), and a kernel with built-in Security Enhancements for Android (SE for Android) access controls. Basically trying to stop people from FLashing there own Firmware into the phone,
WHATEVER YOU WANT DO NOT TRY TO FLASH A DOWNGRADE> IT WILL HARD BRICK>
Yea you'll have to wait because of the ****ty KNOX samsung did. You got it if you did the ota update to 4.3 samsung released. I was so close to doing the ota until I read about it first. Wait until someone comes out with a fix

Ya I wish I read about the update first or I wouldn't have done it. Oh well. Im sure eventually someone will crack it. Oh and ya thanks for that heads up on a downgrade cause I thought about doing that. Ha.

[Q] Unable to flash custom roms

I'm unsure of what exactly is causing the problem but My T-Mo Galaxy Note 3(SM-900t. Hltetmo) is unable to successfully flash any custom roms. It's running the official 4.4.2 kitkat as well as the bootloader installed from kies 3. Currenty I have a beta version of twrp installed that works with the 4.4 bootloader and I've tried a few different roms with varying issues. Is it just not possible to flash custom roms on this official bootloader currently?
The roms I've tried flashing to name two are Tweaked and W03's Slim. I've only done clean installs and even cleaned out all of the SD card / internal before attempting but the roms either won't boot, and the phone just heats up or loop endlessly. I made a nandroid backup of my stock rooted which I have no problem going back to after each unsuccessful attempt but I've yet to figure out why. If anyone has any tips or advice it's much appreciated.

Tweaked is 4.3 the ROMs are not interchangable
TWEAKED 2.0 ELEMENT V3.0 NOTE 3
That would definitely explain it for tweaked, but Will's seems to be a kitkat 4.4.2 rom. I'm unable to get that one to work either when many seem to have no issue. Due to my post count I'm not able to directly ask in each of their threads so there's it's anything I can do I'm willing. I'll research if it's possible to downgrade back to 4.3 but from what I read already it doesn't look like it.
- Edit
After some research it looks like Will's is modded in some way to have kitkat's version with the 4.3 loader. So that would explain why I'm unable to flash that as well.

They need different sections here for this. One for 4.3 another for 4.4.2.

It would probably help sort out things a lot better, yeah. Shame.. I didn't think an update could possibly go this bad but lesson learned. If anything.. I've had zero problems with kitkat it actually does run better and smoother but the locked down issues are unacceptable with Knox.

What lock down issue.
TWEAKED 2.0 ELEMENT V3.0 NOTE 3
From what I understand once updated to the official 4.4.2 kitkat the updated bootloader in 4.4 makes it so you can't downgrade. It's much more locked down compared to the official 4.3 JB. As such I'm stuck on 4.4. From my research there's only one model of the note 3 that can downgrade and it's the W8 model.
