I have just flashed a new rom (CyanogenMod) after backing up everything through titanium backup (backup all user apps + system data).
Upon restoring all the user apps data, I realized that my storage space only has 1 GB left ( 8 GB before I flash the rom). I used the app DiskUsage to look into this problem and found out that system data is taking up 7 GB of space. I connected my phone to the computer and dig around the folder to see if I can find anything: nothing. I installed Astro File Manager and looked around as well, but I wasnt really sure what I'm supposed to be looking for.
I guess right now I just want to free up space on my phone (even though I dont need it at the moment) and I don't really care about the backups anymore. Does anyone know how/where I can delete the files from System data? I have tried emptying out my titanium backup folder, which helped a bit and got me 1-2 GB of space. But the 7 GB is still bothering me very much.
Any help would be appreciated.
Andrew
Read this, it may help. I suspect its what's causing your problems.

i got an out of space error today and so I downloaded an app to check what was using it all. i found my system data folder is using 7gig. What could be eating all that up and how do I clear it up. I only have a gig in apps.

Have you been flashing ROMs recently? If so, look into data/media and check to see if your files have been copied there while maybe flashing a ROM then restoring a nandroid. This has happened to me and I don't quite understand it, but I manage to free up space every time while not hurting anything

As previously stated, if you're a heavy rom flasher, and make backups before switching roms, AND you don't use an external memory card, go into the system folder and delete some of the older backups that you know you aren't going to use anymore. Touchwiz roms can eat up about 600-900mb, depending on the developer. AOSP ROMS usually cover between 105-150mb + Gapps.
I am sorry if this has been answered somewhere but I just couldn't find anything regarding this. I hope some of you could help me. I have note 2 n7100. So a couple of weeks ago I rooted my phone and flashed CyanogenMod 10.1.3 stable. And it was working fine until recently when I noticed that I only had 1 gig free space on the internal storage. But I had not done anything to warrant such high space usage. So I reflashed it and erased all data, davlik and some other stuff. But when I booted the phone it only had 2 gigs free. So I flashed 10.2 nightly thinking that it would solve the problem, but again the same thing. So I installed disk usage and root explorer and I found out that when I rooted my phone and installed CM, even though I chose the option to erase user data, it actually kept all of my videos and music and pics even all the old games. So I started deleting files left and right and I managed to free up around an extra 5 gigs. So now my phone has over 7 gigs free space, but I can only wonder what else I don't need on the phone. I already tried sdmaid, clear master they just didn't help at all. Now a user told me to delete all the files in /sdcard as they should not be needed in a clean install. But I don't wanna screw up. The /sdcard folder holds up to around 3 gigs of data that I have no idea what they are. I just don't want to end up with a brick.
And BTW sorry for the long post

Delete everything under mnt/shell..it has your old folder and files. Since CM roms target 0 directory ,so new files will be stored in 0 folder

I just did that and some files couldn't be deleted. And now some apps are giving me error that it stopped working

Quick update: I fixed all of my troubles. Got back all the space. I rebooted into clockwork recovery and reflashed cm 10.2 nightly and gapps. I then erased the davlik, cache and user data. Then I went onto the backup and restore and I chose delete backup, and free up space. Something like that, those two options freed up a lot of space on my phone. Now my phone has 9.5 gigs free. Thanks everyone for the help, especially mannyvinny

Merry Christmas everyone!
For Christmas I gave myself a new ROM (4.4.2 KitKat ala CM11 Nightlies.) I've been a weekend tweaker/hacker for some time but the last two or three years, due to 'playing/fixing' sucking too much time, I decided to stay stock (just rooted.) However, too many questions/uncertainties surrounding the 4.3 OTA, I decided to say bye bye Samsung & AT&T with your control freak measures and your bloat. So far, first 24 hours, I am SO happy. My phone is SO much faster on CM11, love the KitKat features, huge improvement in battery life (may be because I selectively restored only a portion of my apps.), etc. I thought it would be hell going with a custom ROM due to battling the bugs but so far it's been smooth sailing (knock on would). And I LOVE that my interface is now consistent with my Nexus 7. I think I'll be a CM user for life unless I go to a Nexus phone in the future.
When I installed CM11, I did a Factory Wipe/Reset of Data and Cache (via CWM.) I could swear I had like 9GB of the internal storage free. Since installing CM11 and latest GAPPS I now have only 4GB on free internal storage. And I only restored about 60% of the apps of previously had (restored via Titanium Backup). Considering CM11 has less bloat, I'm wondering what happened to my free internal storage. Could there be a lot of files leftover that were not erased? Where should I look or what tool should I use. Already tried using Clean Master - no significant improvement.
After further thought... where is the 'Nandroid' backup I made with CWM stored? I don't see it on the external SD card so I'm guessing that's the culprit and I need to move it off the internal SD on preferably onto my PC. Just need to locate it. The begs the question, if I did a Nandroid backup, then a wipe, obviously the wipe doesn't delete the Nandroid backup - so where does CWM hide it?
Happy Holidays!

Yea same thing happened with me, usually the cwm backups are located in an emulated storage. Happy Holidays to you too!!!!

Bingo. As expected. Had to startup ES File Explorer, enable root explorer, do some more digging, and found it in Data/Media/clockworckmod
Moved to SD card then to PC. 3.6GB freed.
I was a little distraught though to see in the data directory, lots of folders for old apps that are no longer on the phone. The CWM Wipe functions don't get rid of this stuff. So essentially is the only option to browse all the folders and make your own decision on what can go? Possibly a lot of work for little return though unless you do a folder list by total filesize?

Yea some of the crap in there, not really sure why its just thrown into random folders.
When on CM 11, /data/media/ is the directory for the original sdcard (what you saw when on Touchwiz) and the 0 is the emulated storage for CM 11. If you backup to the internal, your backups can be in
/data/media/0/ or /data/media/. As said before, all the other folders and files are left over from before putting CM 11 on.

Are you saying anything not in the /data/media hierarchy can be deleted?

Edit: The best answer is no. The other partitions like /system/ are crucial for your system even being able to boot.

Hi all.
After trying to install some apps, I recieved messages regarding full storage, preventing me from installing the apps that I wanted, although I had over 200mb available under the app storage!
So I downloaded several cleanup apps and deleted some old apps, but still in the "other" section under app storage, there is 5GB of unknown data (screenshot attached).
I've tried finding out what eating my storage space using some disk mapping apps, but hasn't been able to find out what it is (when I map the app storage, it only shows the apps themselves and the free storage, and not the 5GB).
I'm guessing maybe some of it includes the system data, but didn't think that it will take that much storage space, and also if it is system data, it's weird to me that it's under the app storage section.
I also tried googling it up and looking it up in the forums, and I did find several people having the same situation, although no solution found.
Please note that I'm not rooted.
I would be really glad if someone knows what's causing this, and if there is a solution.
Thanks!
Try to backup your data and then restore to the default settings
Not really

This doesn't fix anything. This was also the advice of the HTC support. Unfortunately they also don't know that a factory reset will not clear that space.
Minimal "Other" will take a little under 5 GB. So don't reset for nothing.
Now i just rooted my HOX and still looking into this (playing with link2SD, might be a fix).
Apps are installed under /data and has a total capacity of 2.11 GB
I have the same problem on my phone. Any "fix" for this, other then factory reset?
(I have the latest update available, running stock os.
Here's my situation... I've had the 32GB 2013 N7 nearly since it's launch. I've rooted it and unrooted it numerous times to update it to the latest OS versions. I've never done a full system restore all the time I've had it. Nor have I installed a custom ROM.
I noticed the other day that a whole 7GB is being consumed by "System data" in the DiskUsage app. This seems overly excessive, right?
I'm currently not rooted, so I can't look into what's taking up all the space, but I might root it if that might be the quickest solution. I'd also REALLY like to keep from doing a system restore, as I don't want to reconfigure everything, but if that's the only solution, then so be it.
So, any ideas? Thanks!

I don't know what that apps saying I'd delete it. You sure that's not your free space left as it says?
The system partition is only 1gig so it's not possible to be using 7. Look at Settings > Storage. Delete **** with Solid Explorer to free up space.
If you think it is your system you can flash the system.img and it won't wipe anything but also won't fix your problem.. not sure you have one.
