[Q] System data is almost 7 gig - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

i got an out of space error today and so I downloaded an app to check what was using it all. i found my system data folder is using 7gig. What could be eating all that up and how do I clear it up. I only have a gig in apps.

Have you been flashing ROMs recently? If so, look into data/media and check to see if your files have been copied there while maybe flashing a ROM then restoring a nandroid. This has happened to me and I don't quite understand it, but I manage to free up space every time while not hurting anything

As previously stated, if you're a heavy rom flasher, and make backups before switching roms, AND you don't use an external memory card, go into the system folder and delete some of the older backups that you know you aren't going to use anymore. Touchwiz roms can eat up about 600-900mb, depending on the developer. AOSP ROMS usually cover between 105-150mb + Gapps.

Low system memory bug

Hi,
The problem is, that I cant install apps that are over 6mb. Sometimes updates just remove apps from my phone, just saying "not enough space". The best part is, that I have ~130MB on /system, and 1,5GB on /sdcard! It happens both on stock-based roms and FXP 133 (CM9). I just have no clue what to do.
Wiped dalvik cache, cache, formatted data and system, it just happens no matter what. After moving all apps to SD problem persists. What am I missing?
Xperia arc, FXP 133 anzu, with included kernel
Forgot to add: It's a fresh installation. Sometimes larger applications install properly. I had problems with Titanium Backup and Sygic.
Not sure but if you're moving apps etc. to your SD card you might need to clear up space or buy another SD card (i recommend 12 -16gb SD card)
If its stored in internal memory you might need to do the same and clear up space
Have you tried using another sd card just to make sure whether the problem is with your existing sd card or device?

It has nothing to do with sd-card, can u both read? Should I provide logcat?
EDIT: Sorry, I meant nothing offensive, I'm just too direct sometimes.
What else is there left to wipe, when /system, /data, /cache and dalvik cache has been purged? Apps simply download, install and then Google play gives notification about lack of disk space. It happens even, when I install apk's using ES File Explorer. Why can I install games larger than 15MB (no sd data, so it lands entirely in phone memory), and can't install 6MB Sygic? APK file is NOT corrupted, it works on my other phone. Market version is no good as well...
Same problem with me too, i tried to install Google Now (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818189) and it refuses to copy the files in the /system with the error "Not enough memory".
It was fine till i used Pureness ROM, but now i am on Jelly Sandwich.
When you install an app, there is two files, the apk and the corresponding odex file (same name than the apk, suffix is '.odex'). Sometime, when you play with restore, moving apps in system, odex them or changing rom without cleanup, the ".odex" file remains. Search for corresponding odex file in /system/app or /data/app and delete it.
When you save apps to internal they go into data/app not system /apps
check what space you have if needed save some gspps from internal to system by using app called links2sd free from play store.
Try cleaning the dalvik cache this is not the same as deleting the mentioned app can do this.
titanium backup can help with moving to system and cleaning to dalvik.
Also look in vendor/app there may be some issues there.

vendor/app holds one small file, it has sth to do with ringtones, so it's not that.
Before switching roms I always make a proper cleanup.
There is sth interesting about system app manager though, it shows that "19..." of internal storage is used and "183 MB" is free. Why are there three dots instead of MB, and why is it just 19? It looks like the dots replaced sth that doesn't fit inside of the text field (190MB?).
Why does it happen after cleaning everything, on fresh, "Out-of-the-Box" rom? I could understand it on Ice Bean (it started on that rom), it was 200mb+ stock-based rom, but FXP is just ~130mb! There should be plenty of space for app data.
EDIT: Wow, thats even more odd, I've just managed to install all the apps I couldn't! Like the problem was never there. It's weird and I still want to know what the hell was that, and make sure it won't happen again, as I have no time for X Files kind of things.
Thanks for feedback, so far.

Full wipe and still no space..

So I've been using paranoid android for a while and I've been wanting to go to Slim Bean rom for a while. So i flashed everything correctly blah blah performed full wipe etc. Directly after the full wipe and flashing it says i have 866 MB available.. How is that possible? I just performed a full wipe, every piece of data is gone.. No apps, music, pics, or cached data and have not even a single GB of data available?
Before switching ROMS i deleted all of my themeing data - custom lockscreen and wallpaper data and widgets. They take up a ton of space. But none of that is on my phone anymore.. Why the hell am I only being granted that tiny amount of space?
Just so we're on the same page, where does it say 866mb and what all was wiped in by our full wipe?
It says 866 MB on the storage setting in settings menu and on the internal storage menu on my computer - when i plug the phone in
I would check your nandroid backups as well as your ''0'', see if there are copies of it.
You wiped your internal SD card from recovery? Or did you just wipe data?

In order to completely wipe the device, you need to wipe the sd card from recovery, or with a file manager.
Try this:
1. Download your favorite root file manager (My favorite is Root Browser Lite)
2. Check to see if your /sdcard folder is empty alternatively you can go to /data/media/0 to check this
3. If it is try navigating to /data/media/legacy/ this will be all of your stored files from before flashing to 4.2
Before deleting make sure you aren't deleting your clockwork folder or TWRP folder because that is likely where any nandroid backups would be located
If I have helped slap that thanks button please.

Ok, so I deleted a few things from my 0 file because it had duplicates of existing files in it. I gained about 1 gb of extra space from that, thanks.
But now when I go redownload an app that I once had ( i.e widget locker ) it says unknown error code during application install : -24
I was searching and I think i may have deleted the widget locker that was located in my "0" folder. Is there a way around this? Can i make a new folder titled Widget Locker or something?
Try format data.

Storage space

I have just flashed a new rom (CyanogenMod) after backing up everything through titanium backup (backup all user apps + system data).
Upon restoring all the user apps data, I realized that my storage space only has 1 GB left ( 8 GB before I flash the rom). I used the app DiskUsage to look into this problem and found out that system data is taking up 7 GB of space. I connected my phone to the computer and dig around the folder to see if I can find anything: nothing. I installed Astro File Manager and looked around as well, but I wasnt really sure what I'm supposed to be looking for.
I guess right now I just want to free up space on my phone (even though I dont need it at the moment) and I don't really care about the backups anymore. Does anyone know how/where I can delete the files from System data? I have tried emptying out my titanium backup folder, which helped a bit and got me 1-2 GB of space. But the 7 GB is still bothering me very much.
Any help would be appreciated.
Andrew
Read this, it may help. I suspect its what's causing your problems.

Where did my files go after flashing?

Hey all,
Was bored and needed to update my phone with a new rom so I did some scouting about and found Beanstalk. Now this rom is awesome but previously I was on CleanRom which is also an awesome rom.
When changing from Clean to Bean I used TWRP and wiped Cache, Dalvik and Factory reset. I never wiped system (I know I should have).
Now after doing so, I lost all data files (images, videos, music, etc). I would like to retrieve those. Upon looking through the root directory, I could not find them.
So, any ideas? I'm stumped but I am not giving up. Storage details says I have 10gb, available 2.5gb+. Now where did the 7gb+ go? Also my 6gb for my system as it is a 16gb N7105.
If more info is needed just ask. List all you need to know. I am gunna do some other things that does not involve wiping the device.
If you open up explorer and check the internal sd. You should be able to see a file labelled "0" check in that folder.

Factory reset doesn't wipes internal memory.
Maybe twrp setting was set to /media(not sure which folder it is) directory for internal memory so it wiped the internal memory too
〽 ???✌ ?? ????Ⓜ?
There's plenty of apps on playstore that can do a full search for internal memory and show the largest files. I think a good one would be Memory Maid.

Hello all
Thanks for the feedback.
So what I have done is flashed a new kernel and recovery which is called Devil. I got this for the dual boot feature and within flashing a rom as I noticed a folder called legacy. This folder contains my previous content. All music folders etc.
So I rebooted went onto a few root explorers and could not find it!
I've enabled root and show hidden files and folders. Went to the root of the phone and checked each folder and all folders within and still cant find it.
Recovery shows: /sdcard/0/legacy - Old
Root explorer: /sdcard - New
Root also has another folder storage, with 4 folders; emulated, sdcard0, sdcard1, usbdisk0.
Emulated has 2 folders; 0 and legacy. Both display the new files.
Sdcard0 shows new files.
Sdcard1 shows microSD(Need more disk space for roms)
Usbdisk0 has no files.
This is a mind game. I think the rom created a new system within the old system files and it can't access out but the recovery can.
I have tried mounting the phone to the Pc via recovery but it won't pick up.

Hello all,
Thanks again for the support!
I resolved the issue. The issue was, AOKP based roms create a new file system for the System. It created it within /sdcard/0/legacy.
When I flashed a Sammy based rom and checked the file manager I was able to see all.
So for all who are coming from Sammy to AOKP, please be careful and back up all SDCard contents, regardless if advised it will not affect Internal storage. This is the first time this has happened since G1 days.

I think so becuase I've recently installed the CM on my device, did a factory reset with the CWM recovery but both the internal and external memory (SD) wheren't touched at all, all the files and folders remains where they was.
So it's normal, right?
Yes mate.. when doing the 3 wipes it doesn't touch internal storage. Its only when you wipe either internal storage or /sdcard.
I had to format my sdcard and wipe all data after I transfered it to the PC. This fixed the file system issue but changing from aokp to sammy will do it again and again. Bit annoying. But hey, its always good doing a clean up.
All i had on my phone were a load of pics and vids by camera and 3 albums. All of this would take no more than 2gb.
Camera was 600mb. So where did 5gb go to? So there is a lot of crap from rom changing, ALOT.

Loving CM11 - Cleaning Up Internal Storage Freeing Memory?

Merry Christmas everyone!
For Christmas I gave myself a new ROM (4.4.2 KitKat ala CM11 Nightlies.) I've been a weekend tweaker/hacker for some time but the last two or three years, due to 'playing/fixing' sucking too much time, I decided to stay stock (just rooted.) However, too many questions/uncertainties surrounding the 4.3 OTA, I decided to say bye bye Samsung & AT&T with your control freak measures and your bloat. So far, first 24 hours, I am SO happy. My phone is SO much faster on CM11, love the KitKat features, huge improvement in battery life (may be because I selectively restored only a portion of my apps.), etc. I thought it would be hell going with a custom ROM due to battling the bugs but so far it's been smooth sailing (knock on would). And I LOVE that my interface is now consistent with my Nexus 7. I think I'll be a CM user for life unless I go to a Nexus phone in the future.
When I installed CM11, I did a Factory Wipe/Reset of Data and Cache (via CWM.) I could swear I had like 9GB of the internal storage free. Since installing CM11 and latest GAPPS I now have only 4GB on free internal storage. And I only restored about 60% of the apps of previously had (restored via Titanium Backup). Considering CM11 has less bloat, I'm wondering what happened to my free internal storage. Could there be a lot of files leftover that were not erased? Where should I look or what tool should I use. Already tried using Clean Master - no significant improvement.
After further thought... where is the 'Nandroid' backup I made with CWM stored? I don't see it on the external SD card so I'm guessing that's the culprit and I need to move it off the internal SD on preferably onto my PC. Just need to locate it. The begs the question, if I did a Nandroid backup, then a wipe, obviously the wipe doesn't delete the Nandroid backup - so where does CWM hide it?
Happy Holidays!

Bingo. As expected. Had to startup ES File Explorer, enable root explorer, do some more digging, and found it in Data/Media/clockworckmod
Moved to SD card then to PC. 3.6GB freed.
I was a little distraught though to see in the data directory, lots of folders for old apps that are no longer on the phone. The CWM Wipe functions don't get rid of this stuff. So essentially is the only option to browse all the folders and make your own decision on what can go? Possibly a lot of work for little return though unless you do a folder list by total filesize?

Yea some of the crap in there, not really sure why its just thrown into random folders.
When on CM 11, /data/media/ is the directory for the original sdcard (what you saw when on Touchwiz) and the 0 is the emulated storage for CM 11. If you backup to the internal, your backups can be in
/data/media/0/ or /data/media/. As said before, all the other folders and files are left over from before putting CM 11 on.

Edit: The best answer is no. The other partitions like /system/ are crucial for your system even being able to boot.
