Hi
I wanted to know:
1) How do I know what my kernel?
4) Does it matter which kernel I have?
5) Does it need to be suitable to the ROM (I have VIPERX)?
6) How do I install a new kernel?
Thanks.

1: flashed viper x including the boot.img then you are on stock viper x kernel. Check software settings on the phone
4: no if it works for you why change, some kernels give more tweaks. Like Alex V with pocket protection and BLN features. Just like XM !
5: it needs to be a JB sense kernel
6: search xda its easy !

1. When you are using custom kernel on custom rom but maintaining ramdisk tweaks to the said rom
2. as answer 1
3. i don't think so, always read the kernel developers instructions in full.
Hi,
I've been an avid guest on this forum for about a week now. I got the HTC One X international version running rd-miui 2.8.3 CM9 version and used this awesome forum to learn all the unlocking bootloader, rooting, and custom rom business all pretty fast. I'm trying to pick up kerneling but need some help.
1. it's my understanding that the kernel resides within the boot.img?
2. what exactly are modules (that sometimes comes along with certain kernels??) Is it absolutely necessary to install the modules in recovery after flashing the boot.img in fastboot?
3. I want to use the ncx-v.0.65 kernel with the rd-miui 2.8.3 CM9 rom but there isn't a repack for this rom. I found a nice tutorial of how to do this in windows but still a little confused on some things.
to repack the ncx-v.0.65 kernel for rd-miui 2.8.3 CM9 version --- can I just unpack my rom's boot.img, then replace the boot.img-kernel with the boot.img-kernel inside the boot.img of the ncx-v.0.65. Then repack and flash the new boot.img (with the ncx-v.0.65's boot.img-kernel inside)??
would I need modules???
4. is there a tool/app to easily repack kernels for other roms?
5. what's the best kernel out there for htc one x? Does that depend on which rom you're running? I'm mainly trying to improve my battery life but wouldn't want to sacrifice stability for it.
Thanks for your help guys.
PS. what does "OP" stand for?
Also, is anyone else experiencing problems with the volume rocker wake on RD-MIUI 2.8.3?? It would work for like 5-10 sec after phone sleeps but anytime after that it won't work...then sometimes it would work after a long standby/sleep.

1: yes.
2: They help the kernel work. They are necessary.
3: You need to flash the modules from the thread and repack the kernel, using
4: this
5: There isn't really a 'best' all round. You'd have to try each kernel and choose which one you want.
PS: OP stands for original post or original poster.
so after I repack the boot.img with the kernal I want then flash it in fastboot..then I still gotta install the modules in recovery?
just use the module from the OP even though it wasn't been repacked for my specific rom? (Do modules need repacking??)
i noticed that sometimes (not always) the module .zip contains a folder named "kernel" with a boot.img inside it.]
is that kernel folder necessary? Do the modules need to be repacked?

Hi arona the best way to find the best kernel would be to give all of them a try as different kernels react differntly on different one x. But if your wanting gaming I'd give kozmic a try first and also make sure you have renovate gaming boost on your phone.
There isn't the best kernel.
XM kernel have a governor called "Gaming" and it's good for game.
You have to try the various kernel and choise the yours

Yes to both and if you want link to xm kernel here you go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136731 just be sure to pick sense kernel and modules.
hi guys , sorry i'm new in HTC one x , so i need more helps for installing XM kernel .
i downloaded xm_kernel_188v4_sense.zip file and in installing tips it says that i need to flash this zip file with recovery and then do a wipe dalvik cache , there is no prob in this steps , but after that it says clear fastboot cache and then flash the kernel image with fastboot . how can i do this last two steps ? and the kernel img file is the img file in xm_kernel_188v4_sense.zip ??
and if anything goes wrong how can i return to stock kernel ??
and this kernel has higher clocks by default right ? i mean i can set higher clock speed with OC apps with this kernel or i need to do some changes before i can overclock ??
For flash the kernel you have to:
1) Extract the ***.img file from zip
2) Coping the zip on your sd
3) Reboot in recovery
4) Flash the zip and after a wipe dalvik+cache
5) Reboot in fastboot usb
6) Make an erase cache with the command fastboot erase cache
7) Flash the ***.img with the command: fastboot flash boot *name_of_file*.img
8) Reboot into system with: fastboot reboot
xm kernel doesn't support oc

Hi arona to flash the kernel extracct boot img from the zip with winrar or 7zip do into bootloader select fastboot and plug into pc, goto the fastboot file you have on comp and put kernel inside folder with adb and fastboot files. Then hold shift and righ click in folder and pick open comand prompt here. Then type fastboot flash boot (name on extracted boot.img) without brackets then fastboot erase cache. If you want to go back to stock just do same again but with the stock kernel. Hope that's a bit of help.
There is no "This is the best Kernel Ever" as it is entirely subjective.
Only you can tell yourself what the best Kernel for you is.
Some focus on battery, some focus on performance. Do your research, try some for yourself and see what YOU prefer.
The following link also counts for for the best kernel question !

Hello!
I just received my wonderful HTC One V from Koodo, and I managed to unlock it's bootloader+ rooting it. From now on, I am completly lost.
My main objective is to overclock it for a better gaming experience. How can I overclock it? Do I need special kernels? Where can I take it? Are those kernels included in specific roms?
My second objective is to install Android 4.2 JB. So how do I install a rom? Can you recommend me a specific rom? Oh, and is it battery-hungry?
Feel free to post links, tutorials, instructions and any other useful tips.
Thank you very much everyone!
Alpha8768.
For a good JB 4.2 ROM, I suggest http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230656
Flash this kernel, and you can overclock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1954967
Here is a tutorial on ROMs, kernels and recoveries! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996665
Hope I helped!

Yes you can use any kernel EXCEPT the stock , all custom kernel for one support overclocking , when u have such a kernel the next thing u have to do is use any app from play store to overclock it ..try CPU MASTER FREE..
The most stable and battery friendly ROM on 4.2 is shpongle ..you will find it in original development sections and its installed the same way as the other roms..nothing special just remember to flash the kernel specified in the post..just flash the rom via recovery after performing a full wipe..
Thank you soo much guys now I'm all set with RC9.5 FX+ Sense 5 Rom and TK Kernel ;D
Let's play with my new toy now!!
I want to know if I need to install a custom rom or a custom kernel or a combination of both so that I can overclock my phone(1ghz single core). Please help. Why is everybody so silent here, so unwilling to answer a simple question as this. My fourth post of the same question.
hey dude....

if u install a custom rom it is obvious that a custom kernel will get installed automatically...
any way there is a app called setCpu that helps u overclocking the phone required your phone is rooted...
u can also use "seeder" an app that tries to add smothness to the kernel....

You would only require a custom kernel for your purposes.

Custom ROMs can be built with stock kernels so that's not always true.

The question asked did not specify a specific ROM. The question was what would be required to perform OC. What is required is a custom kernel that allows tweaking. Telling someone if they install a custom ROM they automatically get a custom kernel is misinformation.
plzzz be clear

i think u need to read the question properly..
he is asking about custom kernel and rom as well....
if u use stock kernel then it would work only with aosp based roms with only minor changes not the change that allows processor tweaking...
and one more thing the stock kernels used to be part of custom roms of gingerbread ...
