Hello!
I just received my wonderful HTC One V from Koodo, and I managed to unlock it's bootloader+ rooting it. From now on, I am completly lost.
My main objective is to overclock it for a better gaming experience. How can I overclock it? Do I need special kernels? Where can I take it? Are those kernels included in specific roms?
My second objective is to install Android 4.2 JB. So how do I install a rom? Can you recommend me a specific rom? Oh, and is it battery-hungry?
Feel free to post links, tutorials, instructions and any other useful tips.
Thank you very much everyone!

For a good JB 4.2 ROM, I suggest http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230656
Flash this kernel, and you can overclock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1954967
Here is a tutorial on ROMs, kernels and recoveries! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996665
Hope I helped!

Yes you can use any kernel EXCEPT the stock , all custom kernel for one support overclocking , when u have such a kernel the next thing u have to do is use any app from play store to overclock it ..try CPU MASTER FREE..
The most stable and battery friendly ROM on 4.2 is shpongle ..you will find it in original development sections and its installed the same way as the other roms..nothing special just remember to flash the kernel specified in the post..just flash the rom via recovery after performing a full wipe..
Thank you soo much guys now I'm all set with RC9.5 FX+ Sense 5 Rom and TK Kernel ;D
Let's play with my new toy now!!

Hey guys,
New to Installing Custom Kernels/ROMS onto the Xperia Play but not new to flashing in general. So I do have a few questions.
As I have an Unlocked bootloader which I have of course unlocked I am looking for CWM and a Good ROM to use. So my questions are as follows
1. Where can I get hold of the latest and fully functional CWM for the Play ? I heard Doomlord has a Touch screen version ?
2. What ROM would you reccomend for performance but full functionality ? I am personally looking more so towards Doomlords work. I am looking for a ROM to tide me over until the Custom ICS Roms are at a more stable point. I would though want a ROM that does not force an Overclock, I currently want to stay at stock CPU.
I already have the latest Flashtool Oh and I have the R800i
I look forward to your guys response, I love the Play and love the Play section on XDA, Really active!
I think since you are so keen towards the ICS thingy...hence DarkForest ROM by KeiranFTW- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1388166 will be suitable for you..(check for the screens on the 2nd page)
As for CWM for your unlocked bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390771 (though it says for locked bootloaders, but since its based on just flashing it, hence should suffice)
for rest of the tweaks & other modifications http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294129 thanks to Logseman
cheers!
Thanks I will take a look at them, I was keen also on Darklords ROM here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176502
But I just need to find out if its a Pre OC ROM or if I set the OC later as I would prefer to flash a Stock CPU rom to avoid damaging my phone.
Just get SetCPU, then you can change the overclock yourself, i.e. return it to stock settings if a custom ROM has changed it

Hey folks,
I've been looking to overclock my Xperia Arc (runnin ICS 4.0.4, build: 4.1.B.0.587) and I'm quite the noob at this so I'm looking for answers and advice. From what I gather, I need to install a kernel and I hear there are many options. One of the most popular one seem to be DooMKernel. I'm thinking about using that and I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1520654
Now, my question is, is that the most updated thread? Is there a newer updated DooMKernel lying around (that is newer than v5)? It's fairly difficult to navigate the forums and so I have a hard time finding all the right posts.
My next question is, if I were to install CyanogenMod, does it install a new kernel that allows me to overclock or is OS separate from the kernel?
And also, feel free to recommend me any other kernels. Are they all pretty much the same or do some of them have particular enhancements?
Thanks in advance!

1. The Doomkernel you linked have problem with some battery drainage, thanks to not using newest kernel sources (if I remember correctly?) and also that Doomlord haven't updated it at a long time so. Look for some other kernels before that one becomes stable enough!
2. The Cyanogenmod ROM requires it own specially developed kernel which can be found in the zip package of each initial release (CM7 - CM9 - CM10) and it have to be flashed through Fastboot before you are flashing the ROM in recovery. Follow instructions on Cyanogenmod homepage for each installation on your prefered device for more info!
3. If you're on Gingerbread, use Doomlord v22, for some amazing performance / battery and a lot of functions (underclocking, undervolting and some other stuff).
If you're on ICS, use latest Lupus kernel (version 8) - that kernel is a beast in every way and you'll definitely like it, it's stable enough to satisfy even you!
It's some difference between the kernels in speed, stability and performance / smoothness / battery life / functions, yes. You have to check them out yourself to find your own favourite.
Hope my answers helped you!

Awesome response, very helpful. Just one more question, do the CyanogenMod kernels have overclocking capabilities? Thanks for the reply, much appreciated!

Yup, CM kernels was created with overclocking and extended performance in mind, hence why Cyanogenmod ROMs are known with expanding the possibilities to some crazy ass performance and level boost (I have only tried CM7 and using it was like driving an Ferrari at 220 km/hour, later versions should be equal in their own specific ways).
Hope you got some useful answer on your question, dude!

I can recommend Sega Rush v3 kernel to use with your currrent or any .587 based custom rom, it can if you so wished be used up to 2ghz,( as could Doomlords V5 ), but be warned and advised to tread carefull with overclocking as you can cause permanent heat damage to, and even kill your phone if you overcook it.
I think the links to Doomlords v5 are down at the moment he is not active with it, so you may struggle to find doomkernel v5 to download, however if you look to the credits in the latest release of Sega v3, you will see him mentioned, take that as a good omen.
PS there are plenty of kernels to choose from, but I would say try to use one that is currently under active development, so that any upgrades / improvements are kept constant.
I can't comment on Cyanogenmods never tried any, but they seem popular enough, and look pretty well supported. You really are spoilt for choice, have fun
Hi guys I have just flashed this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705334) however it is not the renovatePLUS version, how do I flash with the PLUS version, need it since it has mods and tweaks which I will need, auto-inverted rotating screen is driving me nuts!
FYI: I downloaded the plus zip but I dont know what to do with it, do I just extract into my phone? Because that did not work.
Also, I saw this guy, username(csec) with this signature (Phone: Renovated Endeavoru, F4, XM-Kernel #296 (Most fantastic combo in my entire experience with HOX)). I want to use have those thing stated, already have Renovate(will flash PLUS once I know how), and there is F4, anyone knows what that is? and finally XM-Kernel #296, which I believe is this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136731), can anyone please confirm is that is a similar one that I can use? Sorry for asking so many question, I finally decided to go deeper with flashing kernels and stuff and I require some professional advice, so please help! Thank you!

For kernels I have one more question. Can I just use the kernel as provided? Of course checking that it is meant for my device 1st. Because there seems to be this confusing thing called repacking...

I RUINED my device before with kernels i didn't know how to use them and obviously i bricked my device so please dont try anything unless u gain experience
Repacking is like making peanut and jam sandwich its like making the kernel work with ur rom if u are using renovate u dont need to repack for XM kernels

If there are no Ramdisc tweaks in the ROM, you don't need to repack the kernel... Mostly kernel repacking isn't needed for Sense roms... So you just have to flash the boot.img from the kernel's zip and then flash the modules from recovery...
AOSP/AOKP Roms need kernel repack each and every time before flashing!

Help once more!
Hi, so after researching a little bit more, I decided change my kernel to the XM kernel(original non-repacked), tried it for a few days, noticed that it response quite slowly compared to default kernel, things like slow display of lock screen upon power on, less smooth transition when. Could I have done it wrongly? Other than the slow response everything else seems fine, I noticed one of the features is S2W, I tried that on my buttons and it worked, however fast charge usb and usb mass storage isnt working, is there somewhere I can enable it or do you have an idea where I can find a guide for XM kernels that describes its features and functionality? Sorry for asking so many questions, thank you!
You have rather detailed instruction how to deal with fast charge and USB mass storage in XMister's thread (first one or two posts).
I suggest you install some of the kernel manageent applications:
- trickster MOD
- Set CPU
... There are many. Choose one that fits you (I am personally using Trickster).
There you will be able to play with your governors and scheduler, and thus achieve better performance or battery life. Or both. Check Q&A, there are few very educative threads about it.
You seem to be on a good way. Keep reading.

if u install a custom rom it is obvious that a custom kernel will get installed automatically...
any way there is a app called setCpu that helps u overclocking the phone required your phone is rooted...
u can also use "seeder" an app that tries to add smothness to the kernel....

You would only require a custom kernel for your purposes.

The question asked did not specify a specific ROM. The question was what would be required to perform OC. What is required is a custom kernel that allows tweaking. Telling someone if they install a custom ROM they automatically get a custom kernel is misinformation.
plzzz be clear

i think u need to read the question properly..
he is asking about custom kernel and rom as well....
if u use stock kernel then it would work only with aosp based roms with only minor changes not the change that allows processor tweaking...
and one more thing the stock kernels used to be part of custom roms of gingerbread ...
I'm not talking about which is best as per the rules.,

If we are talking about Sense
There are 2 kernels: Titanium-KISS and Charm-KISS (which is pimped up Titanium-KISS)... for now Tk is the best, cause ChK is in developing process and few thing may causing problems (for unknow reson, when I've flashed new adreno drivers, ChK was lagging games, sometimes as much, that I was made to restart my phone by power button)
We have 4 ROMs: myONEv (light Sense, development has stopped due to the fact, that there's nothing more to do with this ROM to make it better ), mySense (full Sense, same thing as with myONEv), and two ROMS that are in development - HTC Droid and Ignorance. They are all ICS.
We are wainting as doga will make his Sense 5 JB ROM ready for daily use
If we are talking about non-Sense
We have Hellboy kernel... and that's the only well-workin non-Sense kernel
And we have one ROM that can be use without bigger problems - Shpongle
And that's all
Kernal or Rom??
My primary objective is to speed up my mobile performance,

i'm noob in this , do tell the procedure and links how to flash it in easy steps
