[Q] Automatically switch to 3G when screen is locked? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I was just wondering if there was an app that could automatically switch your data to 3G when the screen is locked. I want to use LTE, but theres no point in draining my battery when i'm not using it. I don't want to completely have no data because i still want to be able to get notifications. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi there, Once you're screen is off the device will enter deep sleep mode and you will only be getting you're notifications, LTE only really drains when you are actively pushing its bandwidth potential, also stick to WIFI as much as possible and use Greenify to hibernate apps you NEVER want to run in the background unless you are actively using them.
hope this helps
cheers

[Q] Samsung Epic - Battery drain is horrible! How can I fix this.

Please help....
I have read many threads about this, but I don't understand any of them. My battery life is horrible, I am only using it for the occasional phone call, texting and checking my email. It's very frustrating because when I need to use it, the battery is dead (or almost dead and I can't use the camera).
I don't understand all the lingo on here about what version "this" and "that" everyone is using. Downloading certain apps to fix this.....
I'm not very techy and just use my phone for basic things.
PLEASE HELP!!!!
Suggestions:
Turn off bluetooth until you need it, then turn off when done.
Turn off GPS until you need it, then turn off when done.
Turn screen brightness to automatic or lowest setting (your preference).
Turn off 4G receiver if you are out of range or just don't have 4G coverage in your area.
Turn off synchronization if you don't care for email, Facebook, Twitter, etc updates. (Not really necessary if your update interval isn't set for short intervals.)
Utilize Wifi as much as possible, if that is an option available to you. BUT turn it off when you know you will be out of range for a good bit of time.
Toggle Airplane mode after each phone reboot. (Stupid bug)
Utilize the TouchWiz program manager (long press on home screen and under Samsung widgets).
Kill the OmaDrmConfigService process via Settings > Applications > Running Services. (This appears again with each phone reboot, unless you find a process killer application in the market.)
If you use Wifi a good bit, it's a good idea to set your Wifi sleep policy to "Never". You can access this via Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wifi Settings: Press menu and select Advanced > Wifi Sleep Policy. Setting to never will not revert back to 3G when you turn off your phone's display as long as wifi is still turned on and within that connected wifi signal range.
If you still get **** battery life, then you can download Spare Parts or BatteryHistory from the market. BatteryHistory is a ripped out piece from Spare Parts, which is really all you need to diagnose your issue.
OR if you don't want to install anything you can key in via the dialer: *#4636*1111# to get to the same menu that both programs above display. (The menu is labeled Battery History.)
From another battery thread that pertains to the two aforementioned programs:

What you do is when you notice that it's doubled on the top drop down box that says "other usage" click on that and change it to "partial wake usage" and anything listed under there is keeping your phone awake. See what is continually running.

Dont ask me to explain this just try it. Use astro and delete the android folder at the root of your sd card and reboot

Did deleting the android folder work or anyone else? I'm trying to see how that can help but if it does good find.
I have no ideawhy but after flashing a few times testing themes on dk28 my battery tanks and my gallery gets slow. The album thumb folder inside there is what fixes the gallery so I usually delete it but I got lazy and deleted my whole folder since it regenerates on boot and my battery came back. Ben deleting it since lol but I flash a lot

Not certain how it helped your battery issue, but good to have that knowledge. I sifted through my folder and only saw cache files for what looked like thumbnails.

Try this:
-Toggle airplane mode every time you reboot. You probably have a "time without signal" of over 50% if you look in settings. Toggling airplane mode resets the radio and so it doesn't keep looking for signal unnecessarily which kills battery
-Gps on doesn't drain battery, only when its being used by an app
-Turn off background data and auto sync. If you don't have facebook/twitter widgets or care about email push notifications then save some power and switch it off.
-Check for apps that aren't letting the phone sleep. Download "spare parts" and it should show you.
-I'm guessing you have the updated Facebook app with chat. I would suggest going offline in chat because it doesn't let the phone sleep and will drain your battery really fast.

thx for the advice.
i will try it without gps
also any good advice on any particular rom? i have only had this phone for 6 days and am trying to pinpoint a great rom to use.
My Epic looks pregnant but the battery lasts forever with the extended one

[Q] ROM without Phone Use???

Has anyone ever heard of(or if you're a dev, ever though of) a rom for the incredible without any phone or 1x/3g capabilities. Cause a lot of us Incredible users are upgrading to a new phone, and I still love my incredible and would probably keep CM7 as a backup, but would love to throw a rom the gets rid of all phone and radio usage to try to max the battery and speed and what not and use it as kind of a ipod touch of sorts.
I look at the roms a lot, but never came across anything? And is anyone else kinda wanting the same type of thing for it?
Just disable the data connection in settings...

Well ya I obviously know that, but I was just curious if anyone thought of doing that kind of thing before/would if make the battery life or performance any better with those options completely lacking so the phone couldn't even think about them.
CPCookieMan was working on something like this for the Eris.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979808
I think the main trick is getting the Wifi, and Bluetooth radios working but keeping the cell off. You can turn on Airplane mode but that disables bluetooth.
Might be possible to do this with an app, such as tweaking the settings in Juice defender.

And ya I was thinking airplane mode but my radio is Bluetooth.

I would just turn on airplane mode. That way you could use any rom you wanted.

My friend got a Gnex but..

Hey guys so my friend join my line on verizon on a family plan and he really wanted the nexus he likes it i can tell it , however he asked me today why with minimal usage 11% of battery dies within 2 hours
he is on stock 4.0.2 what can i suggest him to have a better battery life? of course i rooted mine but its his choice and he does not want to.
what i suggested
1) lower brightness when not really using the phone
2) get easy batter saver
3) turn off gps when not needed
4) turn off sync when not needed
5) switch TO CDMA from LTE when "LTE" not needed
what else?
Freeze maps when not using. And make sure you clear apps runing in the background when your not using them. Push the multi task softkey and swipe whatever is open to the side

wait... as in he loses only 11% of battery in 2 hours? That's really solid battery life for an LTE version...
All stock the most you should probably expect is 3 hours screen on time over the entire battery usage.
how to freeze maps?

When you swipe the apps left/right from the multitask, does it actually close them? I haven't checked myself, but heard it doesn't? Anyone care to see?

Yeah it is. Only LTE phones that I can think of, that have a great battery life,
are Verizon's Droid razer maxxx and Att's note (<- from what I've been told).
Overall, your suggestions are on point Pat.

you can disable it when you're stock. go into the app info (drag Maps from app drawer to the "info" icon or go from settings) and uninstall updates then disable it.
Or if you're rooted you can use Titanium Backup to "freeze" applications. It just disables them and you can bring them back later.
Honestly, there's really no need to do this if you use Maps at all. Its a hassle and really doesn't save any battery life unless you have a buggy ROM that keeps it running. Just make sure that you're signed out of latitude etc. and Maps won't be draining battery.
There are so many more things you can do to help battery life than worry about Maps.
OP I'd like if you could clarify what you mean in your first post. If he really only drained 11% in 2 hours that's really good for this device. Most LTE users with normal usage and settings can get about 12-15 hours uptime with 3 hours screen on.
The things you noted in your first post are all good ways to save battery but remember its a trade off! You're going to remove everything that makes your smartphone useful to try and lengthen your battery. I leave auto-sync and background data on, GPS on (it actually only turns on when you use it, btw), and just let it be. I do better on battery life when I stop trying to micromanage my phone.
Apps like Juice Defender etc. really can help in specific situations, but for most people it will hurt or have no effect on battery life, but will severely inconvenience you turning on/off data all the time and changing settings.
well he gave me an estimate (basically he said around 2 hours 11%) hes coming from iPhone 4 so there is huge battery performance 3g vs 4g
anyways he will have to stick with it
on another hand my rooted gnex does pretty good about 14 hours with franco kernel
i was just wondering which kernel governor is the best?
mine is set as FRANCO TURTLE and i have no idea what is the difference between other ones
Root it and flash 4.04 it will give you battery life for a day with moderately heavy usage.
Buy the extended battery.

Battery drain, wifi not turning off?

I've noticed lately my battery life has plummeted. When I get to work, I turn off wifi, and even after very light use throughout the day, 9-10 hours later it will be giving me the low battery warning. I checked the Battery screen, and noticed the Wifi bar is solid blue the whole day as seen in the attached picture. If I am reading this screen correctly, wouldn't that be an indication that wifi is actually on all day? As you can also see in the screenshot, the wifi logo is not on at the top, showing I do in fact have it turned off. Do I have a problem? Does anyone else know about this issue and have a fix for it, if it is in fact a "issue"?
Go in to your WiFi settings, hit your menu button and hit advanced. Uncheck "always allow scanning"

Thanks, doing that this morning and will check the battery screen in a couple hours.
OK, that seems to have taken care of the wifi appearing to be on in the battery stats. I will wait until later today to determine if that was the cause of my battery draining quicker. I know there were a few new apps I installed around the same time, and I may have to start digging through those too.

Are u in an area that has low lte strength. If its switching between LTE and hspa+ that is tough on battery. Or location settings, or random apps running in the background. Grab BBS and see what is eating up the battery, wake locks apps etc. Their is am Xposed module that dispatches of wake locks if that is your issue. But I'm guessing its one of your apps or signal.

Actually, yes. When in my office, I get VERY low signal and it is constantly in HSPA. Also, what is the full name of BBS? I am not finding any kind of tool just searching play store for BBS.

Go in to your mobile network settings and change the network mode to wcdma/GSM instead of lte/wcdma/GSM if you're always switching between lte and 4g. Try that at least.

if possible grab WiFi at work, and use only that and I bet your battery significantly improves. then when u leave, hop back on normal data and see if that helps
Well, I've tried the setting the mode to not include lte, still getting pretty quick battery drain. There is no usable wifi here due to the level of security my facility enforces. Anything I can have BBS export to have you fine folks take a gander at and see if you find anything relevant?

My places greyed out

Anyone else having this problem? My places in location settings is greyed out so I can't turn it on.
Did you run Google maps and update your home location first?
Yes. Google Maps knows my home location. Weather seems to know where I am. Anything else I have to update?
Idk of anything else.
On my G4, GPS has to be on or my places is greyed out.

Thanks. Yeah, probably so, but I've got the phone completely set up the way I like it and I'm reluctant to go through it all again just for "My Places". If that's what it will take I'll probably just install Llama which will handle this and a whole lot more.

That's an idea. I'll give it a try. I've been keeping data turned off except when I need it because on the HTC One M7 it seemed to really affect battery life even though I wasn't using it and I value the long battery life on the G4 more than I think I would value "My Places". Still maybe it won't have the battery effect on the G4 that it had on the M7. On the M7 at night I would turn off WiFi too and put it into extreme battery saving mode and I'd still lose 12 to 15% overnight. On the G4 I don't bother to turn off WiFi at night and there is no extreme battery saving mode but I only lost 1 or 2 % overnight. What a great phone!

You were right. Turning on data did the trick. Requires data and GPS on. Not sure I'll keep it depending on battery usage, but thanks.
Tried it overnight with data and GPS turned on and it lost 8% vs losing 1 or 2 % with them off. So it's goodbye to My Places. Llama does an even better job and doesn't cost the battery power. I can quickly turn on data and GPS when I need them. But thanks for the help.
