[Q] No Network Access on Galaxy Note 2 ATT - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello my name is Stanley, I recently bought a Galaxy Note 2, I'm from the Dominican Republic so I'm using Claro Dominicana, which uses the same baseband as AT&T, basically instead of the signal bar, I get a circle with a straight line on it, I don't have data, I can't make calls, I can't send sms, when I try to call I get no network access message, I believe it does recognize sim because I don't get any type of error when my cellphone boots up, when I bought this cellphone it wasn't rooted, so I decided to root it and flash a rom, I'm having same issues.
Can you guys help me out please? I already have my APN information but it's not helping, I've tried flashing roms and it's not helping, I really don't know what to do, when I first bought it, I tried my sim out and it did have internet, I decided to do a factory reset through settings menu and after that I haven't been able to get any type of signal, I would deeply appreciate your help guys, I'm getting kind of desperate here.

No signal bars means no modem or a sim card for a dead account. Did you pay for any airtime?

Did you try the free network unlock?
Might just not be unlocked

My service is active, I already tried the sim on another cellphone, I can do everything on the other cellphone, I have data, I can make calls, etc, thanks for answer.

I did try it, I'm pretty sure is unlocked because it was just working before factory reset, I guess I can try to do it again, but I'm pretty sure is unlocked.

I tried several roms and modems and nothing worked, the last thing I did was going back to stock through Odin, but I still get same circle with the line on it, a stop sign, right now I'm on 4.1.1 stock..

i don't know if this might be an issues or not, but check your IMEI. T-Mobile webpage has a method to confirm if it been blocked or not.
http://www.t-mobile.com
As of August 8th of 2013, they've re-designed their webpage.
http://www.t-mobile.com/bring-your-own-phone.html
following that link, scroll down until you see this: "Don’t see your device?" and under that, a search box. click on the link below that search box. it'll bring up a screen within the webpage. input the IMEI from your phone (*#06#) and avoid adding "/ ##" as those aren't part of the IMEI. If it report as stolen, chances are, they probably blocked it. If not, then maybe your provider doesn't support the phone itself. you might have to call customer service from your area.

I couldn't find information about my imei using that webpage, it wasn't able to locate it, I used this webpage which said is clean http://swappa.com/esn I don't know if that page is good, but it says it's clean and ready for activation.

Try a friends sim card to rule that out

If the phone worked on your network before you rooted and flashed the new rom, then I imagine you must have flashed an incompatible modem. If you flashed stock back via Odin and that didn't fix it, I'm scratching my head. Try stock again. Then remove and insert the sim or toggle airplane mode. If it worked before, stock should fix it.

Hello guys, in this case it was actually a hardware problem it seems that the internal antenna of the cellphone which receives the network signal was damaged, I'm already getting it replaced, I'll let you guys know the results.

Do you know what was damaged. Is it the wire connecting the USB flex or is it the antenna built into the back housing?

[Q] T-989 - No data network. Mobile Network State: Disconnected

Hi there. I own an unlocked, rooted t 989 Samsung Galaxy SII which I bought in the US. I recently moved to the Netherlands, and got a new simcard with Vodafone. The problem: I can't get my data to work.
I have tried (almost) everything, so prepare for a read. Here's the list:
- Sim card is fine, I tried it in a old phone and 3G pops up instantly
- Rebooted, pulled battery, turned mobile connections on/off, handpicked network, etc, etc, all the basics.
- Got the APN settings from Vodafone. Tried them manually, resetted them, automatically, turned it on, turned it off.
- Going online through Wifi works.
- Under settings-Status it reads under Mobile Network State: Disconnected. But I know that the phone detects the network correctly. It can distinguish between UMTS and GPRS here.
- So there seems to be no trouble with the phone being incompatible with the network. I read online that other people had NO trouble using their T989 in Europe.
- I tried inserting my old American pre paid T mobile sim card and turn roaming on. No luck.
- A lot of other people with the same problem tried to link it to Easy Battery Saver. I tried updating, uninstalling and going into its settings to find out what it could be, but nothing.
The last thing I can still try is to factory reset, unroot and try to get the phone to its most original state and see what it does. But before I triple wipe all my contacts, pictures, apps, etc, I want to make sure I did absolutely everything to try and fix this beforehand. Being a noob here, I can't post any links but I trust you I tried.
The people at Vodafone are of no help whatsoever. I hope you geniuses could help me any further.
[Edit] And sorry for posting this in General Chat. If a mod could move my question to Q&A I'd be most thankful..!
I am having the exact same damn problem! it started with being unable to send a simple text message yet having data. now it says it is searching forever

Try flashing a different radio/modem then an american one?
@decko5 Nice to see I'm not the only one, but that doesn't help us yet .
@doug36 Besides the fact that I'm running a stock ROM that should be compatible with no issues, I'm not sure how I'd do that. I can flash a separate part of the kernel? That sounds like a very tricky thing to do.

It's actually pretty easy. You can flash most radios via ClockworkMod Recovery. I couldn't find any threads with a list of Galaxy S-II radios here on XDA, but I found one over at RootzWiki for you. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/2725-radio-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-radios-updatezip-updated-20-aug-2011/
Just find the corresponding one to your geographical location and carrier (Google is your friend) and follow the steps.
Good luck and hope it helps!
(p.s. you should definitely look to see which radio you currently have so that you can download a backup of it before you go flashing radios.)
Thanks for that very helpful post! I've raped and butchered Google, but I'm still having trouble finding out which modem I should download. There seem to be so many and the post on RootzWiki gives no guidance to which is which. Any wisdom on this? I'm in the Netherlands, so Western Europe, on a Vodafone network.
By the way. I fully wiped my phone and installed Team Kang's Juggernaut 5.. No luck, same problem. What I found really, really weird is that it was instantly in Dutch. (Which is ok, I speak Dutch) But I don't remember ever selecting a language. How does it know? Besides, I'd rather have it in English .
What I did find out is that I'm still using a old firmware, UVKID, instead of UVKL1. So I'm restoring back to my previous ROM and trying to update. I'll see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'm going to restore my phone to stockest of the unrooted stocks and try and update.
If that doesn't work, I'll have no option but to send the phone to T-mobile.
I'll try the modem update as soon as I understand what I'm doing . But it does sound promising. Thank you so much for your help, it's greatly appreciated!
Hi guys,
I've updated my firmware to UVKL1, still no luck. Anybody who can tell me which radio I should try on this Vodafone network in the Netherlands?
I am from India and had faced this similer issue with many of my android phones specially with captivate and infuse.......Here what i always did to connect data network.
Just uncheck the use packet data network box in mobile network settings and try to move out from that area (say u are in ur office and going back home) and check the data in settings.
This thing has worked for me always, I don't knw if its related to the OS or to the network provider but this has helped.
Have u tried any other network sim card on ur phone ?
An update for other people that might be looking for a solution in the future. It turns out to be a clear Vodafone problem. I tried a different simcard from a different network (both T-mobile Netherlands and KPN), and they instantly worked without any trouble.
I went back to a different Vodafone store in Amsterdam, and they were much more helpful than the first one. The sales guy told me he had seen the same problem with AT&T iPhones on the Vodafone network.
I called Vodafone, and they have been very nice to me. But they haven't found a solution yet and are looking into it. They see me registering to the network, granting me access, but still my data doesn't work. They've also told me that they will let me cancel my contract for no cost if they don't find a solution.
So problem remains unsolved, but at least there's some light at the end of the tunnel. I was close to buying a new 500 dollar phone... Americans going to Europe: Beware with getting a Vodafone simcard. Sorry to the Vodafone guys, but as for now, that's the status.
So to give closure to this issue (I always hate it when people fix their problem without telling the interwebs..)
IT WORKS!
After an initial terrible experience at the Vodafone counter, the headquarter tech guys have really been great to me. So it is indeed a Vodafone problem. American phones always give them a headache. They don't know what causes the problem exactly, but they do have a fix. It turns out that when logging on to the data network, American phones (AT&T iPhones, my T989 SGsII, and some other Android devices) sent some gibberish along that make the Vodafone server go cuckoo.
The solution was, miraculously, to sign me up (for free!) to the WiFi hotspot service that Vodafone provides, and then logging on to a different APN, being: office.vodafone.nl in my case.
Hope this helps anyone who's having similar issues.

ok the issue here is that some of the t989 are vodafone and some are USA network , now the other solution is that you flash with command prompt which there is a link to that tool im going to upload from the link i got it from . its also a clockrecoverymod , but this 1 asks you for deleting data user on the device and also resets the network includes USA/overseas though if your not customed roms
or any hacked roms , after flashing this device your basically removing any unwanted apps and cache that are hidden during network searching will be fixed bugs , put the simcard in slot but make sure that is a 3G/4G accounts, than its going to reboot the device automatically , it should be searching for service and also will be a circle with a slash on it where the service bar usually is , just wait about 1/2 hour to an hour maximum time let it do its thing , ok whats happening now to the phone is that is thinking with android network with usa and overseas market apps comparing both carriers network also gets the proper address for the custom rom or original kernel, froyo either 1 will get the correct network address and / VPN / and also will be adding both T-mobile/AT&T choose T-mobile dont go for AT&T cause it will research network configuration plus the phone its not unlocked for both its just a network passby to get correct WPN/VPN/clockworkrecoverymod .
Where is an fix?

@#11 That reads like gibberish to me
@#12 I think I posted a fairly extensive report on how I fixed this...?

[Q] MMS doesn't work. :(

I purchased a Galaxy s3 on ebay, SGH-i747 AT&T. ICS 4.0.4 Stock ROM
I used the sim from my old phone and chopped it down, everything worked except MMS. Here is what I've done to try to resolve the issue in order. I searched around the forums and many of the solutions that have been posted were for other types of phones or carriers, the rest didn't work for me.
1. I disabled some of the apps in the stock rom (I haven't flashed a new ROM)
2. I went to an AT&T store and got a micro sim to see if this would resolve it, nope...
3. Installed "SIM Info" from the play store and it shows "SIM Operator Name: Unknown" and "Network Operator Name: Unknown". I have another active AT&T phone (S2 with Paranoid) and SIM Info on it shows "AT&T" where the S3 shows "Unknown". Wondering if this might be the issue, but how can I fix that?
4. I checked the APN and all seems in order, I even copied the APN settings from my other phone. When I go into the network operators and search, no search option comes up, just a grayed out "default settings" thing. I'm not sure if this is normal for a stock ROM.
5. I rooted the phone and put TWRP and SuperSU on it.
6. Installed gApps (first I put on the JB edition by mistake lol, but I fixed that).
Also, I'm not sure if this is a stock rom thing, but the signal bar is always gray, not sure if it is supposed to go blue or not. I do get indicators that 4G is connecting when trying to send MMS. So what can I do? I don't want to install a new ROM on this phone because it is for my wife, but out of the box with the stock ROM MMS isn't working. Is this something that I need to take into the AT&T store and just tell them it is broken and hope they have a solution?

Does not send. Eventually fails, and I can't see any error message.
Does not receive, the download button is there, but it never downloads.
No one receives any MMS from this phone, nor any kind of indicator that a message has been sent from it.
Stock MMS and third party app (handscent) both act the same.
Bump
Any ideas? Would logs help? Where can I find them?

As mentioned, I got a new sim from AT&T after I cut the old SIM down to the micro size and the problem is still there. However, I cannot rule out the SIM being the issue, since SIM Info shows the newtwork operator info as "Unknown". So I guess I should go to the carrier again and get another SIM? Internet, SMS and calls work great on it, just MMS fails. Very puzzling...

there's your problem. It doesn't communicate with google servers (grey vs blue). a little google search (or xda search) will give you the ''how to fix''. Just last week, I made a post about it here but can't remember the solutions specificly.

Ok cool, I thought it should be blue... Is this the thread you are talking about? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2102674
If so, your steps are as follows...
BWolf56 said:
1- Just restart the phone without the SIM card, and connect to some WiFi network, so you can login to your Google Account. It will log you into the account, and then you can put the SIM card back.
2- Add YouTube app and login with gmail account
Go into Gmail App and add account if needed.
Sign into Gmail account wither username and password
Go through login process
3- Hard reset your phone. You will lose all information that is currently on your phone when you do this.
Select Settings -> Security -> Factory Data Reset
Once the phone reboots, input your google account information when the phone asks for it.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I will give it a try. I am able to open all of the google apps including the play store and gmail and they are synced up correctly. The calendar seems to be having issues though, so it might also be related. Will this correct the SIM Info message of unknown network?
I tried Step 1 and 2, both passed fine, signal still gray, and still no MMS.
I am reluctant to do a hard reset, only because it is my wife's phone, and she gets annoyed when having to get her wall papers n stuff again. lol I might tell her to just deal with it at this point though. However, pending step 3, if it still doesn't work, and the SIM card still shows unknown network, what options are left? Go to the carrier?
Possible that the phone is bad, maybe that's why the seller sold it, knowing it was a bunk phone. Worst case you can send it in for warranty. Curious, are either of the water marks on the phone pink? My wife dropped a phone in the bath a while back and started having issues with the SIM randomly not being recognized and then not having data (it wasn't her s3,I think it was a vivid.)

Carrier will either factory reset your phone or give you another SIM. One last thing I can think of is that your MMS are blocked (not in your contract). So that could be something to check with your carrier (or on contract).

I doubt it's the case here as everything else but MMS works. A damaged SIM or connector won't only block those and let the rest work :silly:

Just speaking from experience, I've seen it happen first hand... voice and sms will gimp over a connection sans data, mms on the other hand won't. It was confirmed that the issue my wife had with her phone was a shorted out contact point in the SIM tray. Additionally, the op said he cut down the original SIM, it's possible he didn't do something right and physically damaged something.
I work in an profession that requires me to trouble shoot issues constantly, I learned long ago never to assume that something, regardless of how silly or implausible it may seem, May not be the culprit... we know a few facts...
the phone was purchased second hand.
The SIM card was cut and the phone is not correctly reporting the status of the SIM.
SIM has been replaced, not correcting the issue.
Apn settings have been verified.
No factory reset has been performed.
Now, SIM cards and trays can be very finicky, I have seen a couple phones with bad SIM ports... the issue the op is having may not be related to water damage, but I have seen it happen and there is no reason to discount it until verified.

Are you sure it isn't an APN issue? You might want to go into Settings -> Mobile Networks -> and Network Operators and run a search. Then you can check the APN to make sure it is set correctly for MMS.

True, if it's Straight Talk, you'll need to manually add the MMS APN. I have to do this with pretty much any phone I use, though some ROMs will include ST APN settings.
Thank you all for your input. I'm going to do a factory reset on the phone tonight (if she'll ever get off of the damn thing! lol) and I'll post an update after that. If the SIM still reports that the network is unknown, I'll get a replacement SIM. If it still doesn't work, I'll go on the hunt for a SIM port replacement, but first things first. thanks again, I'll be updating shortly.
Oh, and it hasn't gotten wet, at least the indicators don't show that it has.

Check APN's before factory reset.
I had a similar issue, I had to call AT&T and have them give me the correct settings to put in under the "message setting" option under the messaging app settings.

Can you tell me what settings those are? Also, what APN settings do you have?
Funny, MMS suddenly started working, both outgoing and incoming, but SIM Info still shows network operator unknown. :S I'm afraid that this issue is going to come back... I'm still leaning toward going into an AT&T store and getting a third SIM...

[Q] Very bad service, not able to update, doesn't recognize other simcards

Something really weird is going on with my At&t galaxy s3. I'm new to this forum so I'll just explain what I'm experiencing and do my best to work through it will all of you. This phone got rooted by someone else and when I got it, the rooted program was in chinese and was acting all weird and wasn't getting good reception, although it was before it was rooted. I flashed it back to normal and it's acting very curious. It will receive an At&t simcard but the service bars will go from 1 bar to 4g to Edge to 1 bar all in a matter of 20 seconds or so and doesn't seem to work. It will occasionally work to send messages, make calls, but it seems like it can't ever receive calls. I checked and the IMEI number is still the same. Also, I had originally tried to unlock it to another carrier and when I put in different simcards (From other carriers such as verizon) the service bars don't show up, instead, all it shows is a cancel sign and doesn't ask for an activation code or anything. I'm honestly not sure what to do here, I thought I had broken the simcard reader and replaced that, but that made no difference. I'd greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!

Unlock is supposed to be permanent so it's odd that you lost it.
Now as for your problem, a lot of people are getting this issue lately, where unlocking damages their nv file. The solution can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43842387

Thanks for your quick response I have been looking for a long time and never saw this issue before. I'm not sure where I'll be able to find a replacement nv file...but i'll see if anyone I know has a galaxy s3 from at&t. Maybe once I do this the unlock issue won't be messed up anymore.

SGH-M919 No Data

Howdy,
About 3 weeks ago, I bought two refurbished SGH-M919 phones off eBay to replace mine and my wife's broken/old phones. Her phone was worse off, so the first one I set up was to be hers. Rooted, installed TWRP, and flashed Mokee with no issues. Put her SIM in, put her data back on, she's good to go.
I go to set the next one up for myself, do everything the exact same way, and came to realize after I put my SIM in that the phone is not connecting to LTE. Call/SMS/Wifi all work fine. I didn't notice whether or not it was doing this before rooting, recovery, and ROM.
It's giving me a "Sign-in to network" notification. I tap it, it takes me to a T-Mobile ConnectMe screen. It gives me a "Get Started" button, which I tap, and it says "We're sorry, you have switched your SIM card between different devices, so you will need to manage your account through My T-Mobile or the MyAccount app. Once you have replaced the original SIM card, you may resume managing your account through on-device account maintenance." I can only tap close. My wife's phone didn't give me this "error". I made sure the APN settings were identical between the phones, they were.
I called T-Mobile, they gave me a bit of runaround, said everything looked fine from their end, and "rebooted the connection" which didn't improve anything. They also had me verify my APN settings with them. They had me enter some different values, but it didn't change anything. They also advised me against purchasing phones from less than reputable sources. Great, thanks, that was helpful.
I switched the SIM cards between the two phones and this one is still not connecting to LTE, the other phone is. This led me to think maybe it was a hardware issue, and looked into the modem as a possibility. I found that T-Mobile updated the baseband last month on the stock 4.4.4 ROM, so I flashed that baseband and no change. Both phones were on NH7 when I received them.
I happened to notice on my T-Mobile account page that the device status is listed as "locked/unknown." So, I called T-Mobile twice today for an unlock code. The first guy was less than helpful but the second person did enter an unlock request for me, theoretically, I am currently waiting for that email to show up sometime in the next 24 hrs. But, the phone so far has not given me an unlock prompt so I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with that unlock code once I get it. I'm also not 100% clear on whether the code is for a SIM unlock (which I shouldn't need) or what exactly. It is just the next in a series of ideas which I'm rapidly running out of. A check of the IMEI number revealed it was clean on all US carriers, with the exception of T-Mobile and Sprint which both come up as "unknown." Don't know if that means anything or not.
I'm getting ready to jam this eBay store up, but I'd really rather the phone just start working. I've been dinking with this for weeks and my frustration is mounting, especially since I can't seem to find anyone else who has had/posted about this problem before. I'm not a cell phone hobbyist or anything, and I'm just going off what I can find on Google and places like this. Any ideas/help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony
I am not familiar with the issue, just some extra troubleshooting ideas...
Have you checked under the battery and confirmed the model number is SGH-M919 and the IMEI matches matches what is on the phone?
Have you checked your APN settings?
Have you tried flashing a complete full stock firmware -

IMEI under the battery matches what comes up with *#06#.
I did check on the APN settings, forgot to mention that. I edited it into the first post, added text in red:

I didn't flash a full stock firmware. I had issues flashing the non-hlos.bin to the phone, which as I understand it is the more important of the two files for my issue since it does the LTE. However, Wifi works perfect with transfer rates equal to the other phone. So, I don't know.
I'm downloading OK3 now. I read about a guy updating his modem by backing up his custom ROM, flashing a stock rom, and restoring his custom ROM. Will TWRP back up my current NH7 non-hlos.bin? If so, can I manually remove it from the recovery image without borking anything?
For your situation, just flash the full firmware. Don't remove anything from the tar. OK3 is the newest modem. Get your phone working and go from there.
Yeah, I think I'll do that when I get home, unless someone has a better idea. :fingers-crossed:

Try to flash the latest stock... Before flashing reset your device (take data/photo etc backup).... Hope that should resolve the issue....
Also what is it showing in settings > network? Is it LTE or 2G or 3G???
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Thanks, that's the one I'm downloading and I'll try flashing it when I get home. It looks like it will replace TWRP and everything, bringing the phone completely back to stock?
In the mobile network settings > mobile network menu, it shows the preferred network as LTE.
Yes. It will be completely stock. If it works, you can then root and put TWRP on and go from there.
Alright, flashed the afore-linked OH3 ROM and the LTE is still broken. The phone shows up as connected to LTE, but nothing works. Play Store times out, both stock internet browsers time out. I still get the same T-Mobile nag that I got before and it still doesn't let me do anything.
Also got the unlock email from T-Mobile:
Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. We have received your SIM Unlock Request. Unfortunately, we are unable to process your request at this time because we are only able to provide unlock codes for T-Mobile USA handsets. Please refer your unlock request for this equipment directly to the carrier that the handset was purchased from.

Is there anything left to troubleshoot, or do I return it as defective?
If data works for your sim card in your wife's phone and not for your sim card in your phone, it would have to be a phone issue. You can double check if data works with your wife's sim card in your phone.
If your APN settings match your wife's phone with her data working, the last thing I can think of to try is go to Settings, under Connections go to More networks > Mobile networks and check Data roaming just in case your phone is roaming for whatever reason.
If your phone was locked on a different carrier, I don't think you would have cell service. If your IMEI was blacklisted or borked, I don't think you would have cell service.
I'd return the phone.

I will check on those two things when I get home, but my thought process was similar to yours. Both my wife's new phone and the LTE Wifi hotspot we use for our internet service have full signal on LTE everywhere in the house, so my best guess at this point is there's a hardware issue with the modem in the phone. I might look into replacing whatever board the modem is on. If it's relatively cheap, I'd rather just pay for the part instead of waiting 2-3 weeks for turnaround on the return/exchange, but I think that's probably what we're gonna end up doing.
Thanks for the help, fellas. I appreciate it.

Pixel XL on Verizon MVNO - April Security patch has disabled my 4G.

I had 4G before this update, but nothing I do, no matter how many different APN settings I try, no dice.
I'll tell you where I've been. Have had the phone at least a year and it came with Nougat.
As soon as I got it, I got a Total Wireless SIM (owned by Tracfone and running on Verizon's network) and activated it with no problems. Had full service. 4g, mms, etc. All was great.
Even when I got the 8.0 notification and I updated to Oreo, all worked fine.
A few months back, I got the 8.1 notification. I allowed it to install and when It booted back up, I had no service at all.
Found this thread, Android 8-1 - How to Edit Cellular APN, and one post in there got me with the phone setup and connected to my computer running ADB commands, which allowed me to at least add an APN.
Adding the standard TRACFONE.VZWENTP apn you can easily find via Google searching fixed the problem. (Had to add mms port of 80 but otherwise, all was perfect)
About a week back I get the 8.1 notification again, which i thought was weird since I was already running 8.1
Turns out it was the April Security Patch for 8.1 (i suppose as that's the only reasoning that makes sense to me right now).
After it installed and did it's thing, I only had 3G service, which around here is prone to many interruptions, aside from the slow speed.
I checked, and it's still using the APN I set up. Nothing has changed on that APN, nor anywhere else I can see.
I even added a new one with the same data, and same thing, 3G.
I've searched the threads here, tried some of the other suggestions but none have worked.
I've even went as far as to get Smail to unlock my bootloader (it's a verizon Pixel XL) and from there I've rooted installed twrp and rooted etc, all in hopes that I could try another method listed in that thread i linked above, using an adb shell with root permissions to view the "default" apn data, thinking maybe something in there is messing it all up.
I had no luck there because even though the phone is rooted now, there was something else I have to do to run an adb shell with root permission and seems the easiest way to get that done is just install a custom rom.
Still, what baffles me is, isn't this what the SIM card is partly for?
And why would software updates disable service, or parts of service?
Seems odd that a software upgrade would effect how the phone uses the service, especially when a custom apn is setup and unchanged.
I have scanned these forums for hours over the past few days and I would really love some direction on what to try next.
Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!
Play around in the *#*#4636#*#* dialer menu just don't hit the update button beside the smsc input field
Sometimes, the best thing to do is to go to total wireless and ***** at them till they deal with it. I don't think its something you need to stress over. It's Verizon's and Total Wireless's responsibility to get your 4g LTE back. I just dealt with T-Mobile with the same issue. no 4G but call and texting worked. APN set right but they did something on their side and got me back on track after handing them my phone.(in store)

I would but Total Wireless doesn't have a store front or even a kiosk. They're kinda like Straight Talk, but just for Verizon phones. Verizon naturally won't have anything to do with it since I'm paying their competition to use their network.
I had thought about going through the activation again, but when i put my IMEI # on their website now, it says my phone is not compatible. A year ago it said it was, and it has been until this update.
I've considered flashing 8.0 and see if that lets it work again, but I don't like the thought of not being to update my phone or i'll lose parts of my service.
Thanks for the suggestions yall. Will repost if the dialer code leads me somewhere helpful.

Oh my, can you confirm if your IMEI is the same one as the one as last year?
They are probably getting money hungry and want people to buy phones from them. There is a big chance that hidden menu could solve your problem though. Regarding the imei the only way that could be a problem is if yours was somehow stolen

I think it shows up as an issue because I'm currently using it. I just tried it again and it said "there was an error." When I tried it a few days ago it had said the same, "there was an error, contact customer support"
It's possible that time it showed up as incompatible i had punched a number in wrong.
Can't confirm if it's the same IMEI i had a year ago but it would be weird if that changed.
Couldn't find anything in the hidden menu except when I checked "Carrier Provisioning Info" showed up that it last attempted it yesterday and had failed.
Well as a last ditch .. just a thought here. Pull the sim power on your phone delete the apn. Perform a reboot insert sim and wait. Still nothing? Check apn add if necessary and reboot. Profit?

I did try that after the april update.
With no APN, I get no service, which first happened right after the first 8.1 update. That lead me to adding the APN.
I haven't tried it since I've unlocked the bootloader.
I will try again before flashing back to 8.0.
8.0 was the last time my phone worked just fine with no custom APNs or anything.
I thank y'all for the ideas.
I would like to know if I'm the only one with this specific problem.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue with the 8.1 updates using a Verizon MVNO?
For future reference that provisional menu will be populated with answers other than no. If you have the proper apn etc..

Want me to take a screenshot of the provisional menu? I don't know what I'm looking for in that menu.
As far as APN, it never needed to make one until the first 8.1 update but all worked fine afterwards. It's only since the April update that I have issues.
Will report back after trying to reset without the sim again
If a fresh image+apn doesn't fix it the only other thing that "you” could try would be replacing the Sim. Sometimes the Sim can fry. Could also be as easy as reseating it.
It's fixed
Here's what I had to do.
I did a wipe install (flash all.bat) of an 8.0 Oreo image as it was the last time I had LTE without even having to do anything (like setup a custom APN etc)
After that was successful, I did a no-wipe install of the 8.1 (April 2018) image, and afterwards, and once it was booted, all was well, I have LTE and everything with no custom APNs needed.
Thanks to everyone who offered help in getting me in the right direction.
In addition to what I previously mentioned that I had tried, I also tried:
-I did try a wipe install of 8.1 a few days ago but still with no success. Even with tweaking APN settings.
-I messed around with the carrier provisioning menu and could see I was not getting LTE and when I told the phone LTE only, then no service at all, so I set it back to LTE/CDMA/UMTS (that's what it was already on.)
-Tried dialer code *228 to "activate" my service, but that had no change.
I went back, this morning, to the thread I first looked at after the first 8.1 update I had which disrupted my service completely and ended up with me using an adb shell to do something that allowed me to add APNs and subsequently setup an APN that worked for me until the 8.1 April security update.

I can't say I understand why that worked when a completely fresh wiped install of 8.1 didn't, but it did so I'll take it.
The next thing I was going to try, if it hadn't worked, was changing the radio band in the provisioning menu as that seemed to work for another person.
Either way, all is well for now. Thanks for all the advice!

The only thing I've come up with is that starting on 8.1 flashing full wipe for VZN users (or perhaps limited to VZN MVNO's) with unlocked bootloaders is not allowing the device to activate on the network. I suspect VZN hanky panky at work but I am generally a skeptic that way. Once you get it the way you want it you can update each month with the full firmware but remove the -w in the flash-all.bat file and you should be good.

My bootloader was still locked when these issues began with the first 8.1 update (which adding an APN fixed), and culminated in 3G only after the 8.1 April update.
I only unlocked it so I could hopefully find a solution, which thankfully was a success.
I'm just as skeptic as you are when it comes to VZN though. They have the best coverage in this area, and that's the only positive thing I have to say about them.
