HSPA+ / LTE Switching APN Issue? No Data during calls. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

I get LTE all the time and if I make a call it looks like a HSPA+ 4G Icon appears for a split second that disappears and it's just Signal bars whole call and no Data really annoying.
I tried wap.cingular APN and it just stays connected to HSPA+ 4G and works during calls but never connects to LTE ever.....
WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF help

Not sure why your having those issues?? Might be something you just recently did?
You can look here and try one of these, to see if they help!

This is just a shot in the dark here but isn't 4g LTE a data only network for now? Im not sure if att has implemented any voice over lte back end stuff yet. My device does the exact same thing, 4g most of the time, 3g when on a phone call. But i do get a data connection while in 3g, just a slower one.

Check what this guy says about your issue. Seems maybe? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2388561

It's just giving me any data I know it can't do Voice over LTE. But it would always drop to 3G or 4G HSPA+ while on the phone. When I'm on the phone it just does nothing and just shows signal bars and data isn't working. I tried every APN on that list some connect LTE Only no Data during calls some only 4G HSPA+ no LTE period and it does work during calls.
I don't know if it's my phone. I flashed multiple modems and roms....

Huh, You didn't mention if you have unlimited Data plan. I assume that since you have the Note II and you didn't mention buying it at the whole price, which may seem like you're on a limited data plan.
Check your Data Usage, especially among these: Google Play, any social network apps, and any games. they often requires internet access to upload or check for update as well as license verification.
However, It might be that your data plan has changed since AT&T and Verizon has announced that they ended the Unlimited Data Plan.

I have the same issue. I really notice it when I'm using tethering and a call comes in. My data slows down to barely a crawl. Once the call completes it's back up to normal.
I'm running Clean ROM ACE 5.0

How's everyone doing on AT&T? Speeds? 3G/HPSA+?
Trying to decide between this phone and the Galaxy S2 (international unlocked)
Thanks
Once I changed the APN settings to match those on my Atrix, I get ~4-6 MBPS down and ~1 MBPS up (consistent with where my Atrix was speed-wise, so that is a tower limitation in my area). The original WAP.Cingular apn that my SIM card defaulted to was basically 3G only (like ~1 MBPS down, and ~0.7 MBPS up).

If you wouldn't mind providing the complete APN settings it would be nice. I plan on using the GN on ATT as well.
Thank you.

You really only need the "AT&T US HSPDA" (which provides both HSDPA and HSUPA) one and the "AT&T US MMS" ones (I think). Just add them as new APNs (separately, and you can leave the default 3G one there), type it exactly as it appears in that post, touch the menu "dots" and save each APN, select the "HSDPA" one by tapping the circle, and make sure the green light stays there (that it can connect to the network- you'll see the data bars up top first be gray, then show an H, then turn blue)- then reboot the phone. It looks like the GS2 one might even provide faster speeds than this- but I haven't tested it (or even seen what would be different)...
I'm running whatever it came with for APN. SpeedTest shows 3 MBPS down. So I'm not going to mess with it. Works for me.
or you can change your apn settings from the system settings and get faster data speeds. Its really very easy and is very safe to do.
I get better data performance with the default cingular 410 APN..
like 1.7mbps higher.. and my upload is about double compared to the HSDPA APN..
Think I'll stick with the stock one
Just stuck my Micro SIM in and started using. I haven't changed anything.
A word of caution for those of you on non-Smartphone data plans. A friend replaced his i9100 which he had been using on the $10 unlimited data for Non-Smartphones plan with a GN and was flagged less than 24 hours later. It appears that as with other Nexi, Google provides the carriers with the IMEI's. Also, it appears that using the 4G APN (vs. Cinglular) with a grand-fathered unlimited plan will get you throttled from as low as 2GBish a month. There are seperate servers for 4G and they seem to be part of the auditing process. I'm at 8GB this month on my Tab using the Cingular APN and haven't heard anything. The HSPA+ speeds are the same for both APNs.

Interesting. I plan on using iPhone 4S and the GN, and I have the "umlimited" iPhone data plan from the day it was available. I consume upwards of 10 GB a month (Slingboxing CNBC everyday to work ), I do notice being throttled. I do want faster DL speeds too.

Yes, interesting. Thanks for the info, I didn't know they were on separate servers. There is a difference in speeds though, as mine more than doubled by switching to the HSDPA APN. But of course my plan is officially a "4G" plan so maybe that coding on AT&T's end makes a difference...

I was travelling to a couple of places in TX with a friend that had an Infuse. He's on a 4G plan using the 4G APN and my i9100 is on a 3G plan using the Cingular APN. We compared speeds a couple of times in different cities. Mine were equal to his and even faster a couple of times because I had a stronger signal in the same location. I typically get 8MBish down in fake-4G markets and 3MBish down in less congested 3G markets.

IMEIs are like MAC addresses. The first eight digits of your IMEI is called a TAC and can be used to identify the type of device you have. When you use the network, the IMEI, APN and a whole lot of other information are sent to the billing system. AT&T as with most all others can apply rules in their billing system that check your IMEI against the TAC groups allowed for your plan and then apply changes.

That's pretty interesting. I didn't know Google actually sent carriers that have absolutely nothing to do with a phone a list of IMEI's.
Why would Google send AT&T a list of the IMEI's? The phones have absolutely nothing to do with AT&T.

Wow, I don't hit that here (just outside the DC Metro Area) on the fake-4G network (shows as HSDPA in "Phone Status"), with the fake-4G SIM & APN, with an official fake-4G device (The Atrix 4G). There must be some seriously back-hauled (or less-congested) towers out west...
The highest I have ever seen around here (DC-Baltimore included) is ~6 MBPS

I'm also not sure why Google would be sending them these... especially considering the phone isn't on sale in the US. I doubt AT&T has a list of Galaxy Nexus IMEI's.

I don't know why (legal/FCC reasons maybe?- like all GSM IMEI numbers get reported/made available to all GSM carriers?), but I know when I switched over to the evil empire with my N1, the lady just scanned the barcodes under the battery and they had all the info about the N1 up in their system, including it showing up on the account profile as a "Nexus One" (without a picture of course), and this was maybe three weeks after the N1's shipped; so like mid-Feb. maybe. It really surprised me that they had the info on the device.
my GN got delivered on Saturday, headed over to a AT&T Corp. store and asked for a SIM card provisioned for the phone with HSPA+, took the guy about 5-10 minutes, popped the new sim card in and its all been good. I'm getting very good speeds 300-700KB/s. I haven't touched the APN settings, my phone is showing the Cingular 410 and I'm a little afraid to mess with it. I came from a grandfathered unlimited iphone plan (3gS) and they put me on the new unlimited smartphone personal plan for 4g.

AT&T APN switching to PTA on Galaxy Nexus

EDIT: OP EDITED WITH CHANGED PTA SETTINGS UNDER APN TYPE!
After reviewing the GS2 thread on the same topic (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109983), I thought it might be worthwhile to discuss this issue on the Nexus. I was not able to get the Nexus connected using the information in that thread. However, I was able to get it connected to pta using a slightly modified version of the Skyrocket settings, which I'll post below.
One quick question before I do that, though -- I am only able to get 3 mb/s or so on my Nexus. I am on the unlimited data SOC code for LTE: LDPPVM5 -- think that code is causing any problems?
Anyway, here are working settings to get to PTA (the one the Skyrocket uses):
1) Go to settings, more (under networks), Access Point Names
2) Click on the 3 dots to create a new APN, name it AT&T PTA, and enter the following:

4) Make sure the little circle next to AT&T pta is green.
5) Wait for the device to connect and then restart it.
I had a hard time finding these settings, so I thought it might be helpful to someone else here.

Not to be too paranoid, but will messing with these settings make it appear you are, say, tethering? I don't want to lose my unlimited data on ATT and fear that changing anything to access faster speeds may flag me for using a computer?
Similar to when the Dolphin desktop mode was flagging people on ATT, prompting the carrier to accuse users of tethering...
I wasn't aware Galaxy Nexus had the proper radio for this...

Are you using AT&T's LTE provisioned SIM? that's probably why you're seeing the issue. Also that SoC code is LTE provisioned code which doesn't help.

I am using an AT&T LTE provisioned SIM and my SOC code is LTE, so that could be part of the problem. But also keep in mind, I had that done just in case AT&T ever started to refuse to upgrade unlimited data users to LTE unlimited data. Right now, they're eager to get the LTE towers full, so they won't stop such upgrades -- that may change in the future.
Anyway, I played with my settings for a long time tonight and realized that APN type needs to read "default, internet, supl", not just "default, supl". I have no idea what that means or why it matters, but when I changed that, my speeds definitely increased. To give a comparison, at 1 AM, I got the following speeds:
default wap.cingular APN -- 4-5 Mb for most test servers
phone APN (as described in the thread linked in the OP) -- Average of 5 Mb for most test servers and high of 6 Mb
pta APN (as described above) -- average of 7 Mb for most test servers and high of 8 Mb
The difference isn't exactly extreme, and it's far lower than I'd hoped for, but I think pta is demonstrably faster, at least in my area. I'm eager to see how it does during the work day tomorrow.
I just tried this in Saint Lous, MO and I get no data service with pta

Just curious... If the HSPA+ APN doubled your speed, then why go back to the default cingular settings?
Im confused, why would the PTA apn do anything in the first place? i thought the i9250 version of the GNex isnt equiped with an LTE radio. It does not have LTE. It has HSPA+ (which AT&T and T-Mobile advertise as 4G). The poster here was saying he previously used a Galaxy S II Skyrocket (which is an AT&T LTE device) and because of that, his data plan is LTE and his SIM is an LTE SIM.
Anyway, I used the APN settings listed around this board and it doesn't seem to make a difference. When I used the settings posted, speedtest wouldn't work properly. It said I was getting 7kbps when it clearly wasn't that slow in real world usage. Going back to default fixed that issue, but I'm only getting about 3.5mbps down. I'd be happy to be getting 5. I already called AT&T and confirmed I've been changed over to an HSPA+ data SOC. Also, I got a new SIM card yesterday since my last one was from when I got my iPhone 3GS a couple years ago.

If you have an LTE SOC, you can use the LTE APN but the device doesn't support LTE. You might as well get the HSPA+ SOC and use the HSPA+ APN.

Using the latest AT&T LTE compatible SIM will not cause a problem. It is backward compatible with all AT&T plans. As for an incorrect SOC, well that's a different story and may have unpredictable results although a number of people have different SOCs/APNs working to their satisfaction.
Since a lot of people here think the LTE SIM is not compatible with HSPA/HSPA+, I am posting part of an official communique for "company owned" device users that went out just before the new LTE SIM was rolled out:
ATT said:
Next Generation SIM card for 4G devices now available
The new SIM card for 4G LTE devices is available for ordering in the COU system. While this SIM is required for 4G LTE devices, it is also compatible with 3G devices and COU will be shipping the 4G LTE SIM with every device make and model going forward (with exception to iPhone 4/iPad 3G +WiFi).
The new SIM (SKU 73057) includes enhancements that will enable functionality for LTE capable devices when supported by the network.

i have not been using the "internet" in the "default, internet, supl" setting, I just had "default, supl".
i have added the internet to see if I see any changes. these are the fastest Ive been able to get my GN to perform at. still not as fast as my skyrocket was using h+, and the MMS take a while to send/recieve sometimes.

One quick question before I do that, though -- I am only able to get 3 mb/s or so on my Nexus in Houston (an AT&T favorite city).
Name: ATT pta
APN: pta
Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: not set
Password: not set
Server: not set
MMS Proxy: not set
MMS port: not set
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: not set
APN type: default, internet, supl [NOTE NO SPACES IN THIS]
APN Protocol: IPv4
APN enable/disable: APN enabled
Bearer: Unspecified
3) Then separately create another new APN and enter the following:
Name: AT&T US MMS
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: not set
Password: not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://www.mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: not set
APN type: mms
APN protocol: IPv4
APN enable/disable: APN enabled
Bearer: Unspecify
4) Make sure the little circle next to AT&T pta is green.
5) Wait for the device to connect and then restart it.
I had a hard time finding these settings, so I thought it might be helpful to someone else here.

Confirm that after obtaining new SIM to replace my 3 year old one and provisioning with a Skyrocket IEMI with LTE unlimited data plan I now am regularly 5Mbps down and hit 7-8Mbps at times. Latency is around 130ms.
MMS not playing nice. I haven't tested send and receive enough to say it works for me or not. I'll check in the morning when texting.

Yes. Thank you. I did do so. My calls to ATT level 2 tech support and then a Supervisor now claim my issue is related to provisioning. The sim is correctly provisioned as pta with APN type settings as default, internet, mms, supl. I am told my account settings as part of my customer profile does not correctly reflect my IEMI and therefore my MMS feature is wonked. Sounds like I am in the customer service black hole waiting for my service ticket to make it through helpless-desk hell. There is something to what I am being spun because my online account is all screwed up. I love smartphone gadgets and hate wireless carriers!

Ok, for the sake of argument, try this please and report back. I have a Vivid that I bought unsubs, therefore I didn't get it from at&t, but from Tigerdirect.com and I had to set my apn because I live in York, PA and there is no LTE here. I am able to send and receive mms and access internet at 6+ mbps and I didn't call at&t to report my new phone. Here are my APN settings:
I setup 2 apns, below are both:
APN1:
Name: AT&T HSPA+
(everything else leave blank until the end, which you will
APN type: default,admin,fota,hipri
APN2:
Name: AT&T MMS
APN: wap.cingular
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
APN type: mms
Those are my settings and again I can send and receive MMS and access internet. Ensure the radio is clicked on AT&T HSPA+
Hope this helps.

<< GUIDE & Q/A AOSP LTE Issues US / Canada >>

Are you having issues with LTE on an AOSP ROM? Look here for information, and post any questions you may have about the subject.
First, we need to debunk the carrier's explanation of 4g. The carriers will explain to you that if it says 4g on the stock ROM you are using LTE. That is NOT true, 4g on the stock ROM is actually H, or H+, which is technically 3.5g, and not LTE. The stock ROM displays LTE as 4g LTE
So the first thing you need to do is make SURE you are in a location that has LTE coverage. Go to your carrier's website and verify with their coverage map
Coverage Maps:
AT&T
Rogers
Bell
Telus
AOSP based ROMs display your true network connectivity as follows:
G = GPRS
E = EDGE
3g = 3g
H = HSDPA / HSPA
H+ = HSDPA+ / HSPA+
4g = LTE
For Canadian users, you MUST verify LTE / GSM / WCDMA is selected.
The Dialer Code is *#*#DATA*#*# (or *#*#4636#*#*). You will enter the Data Programming menu, to set it.
Here is an app that will access the menu for you:
LTEOnOFF
Reported ROMs the settings stick on reboot:
CM10
SlimBean
AOKP
Now you have to verify you are using the correct LTE APN settings, and if not, add it.
You can access your APNs by "System Settings => More => Mobile networks => Access Point Names"
Here are the LTE settings for ALL US and Canadian carriers:

I'm with Rogers, everything is the same except for the mms protocol. I left mine blank instead of Wap 2.0
I believe cm10 sometimes resets some settings back to default if you don't reboot after changing a setting. But I'm not 100percent sure.

fixed, thx
Will place in AT&T Index shortly.
Excellent job... noob
I'd like to mention that the LTE / GSM / WCDMA selection does not revert after every reboot on any Canadian S3 that I know of with CM10, and has never done so to my knowledge. If this is happening in other AOSP ROMs, it is a ROM specific problem.
The setting does revert to the default after a data wipe though.
Could users of other AOSP ROMs comment on does it stick on reboot?

There's so many factors that can contribute to that... too ambiguous to T/S.... It's a trial and error thing... Location, network traffic, and the modem you're currently running...

This is definitely true. Only way I can tell though with a degree of certainty is with a network monitoring app and the fact that I've got pretty standard area of operation.
I've been running kyanrom though for the past couple days and I'm back to getting a much higher degree of LTE connections. I guess while I'm at it, I can also confirm that LTE is sticking with kyanrom also.

Hello,
having LTE issues (Not getting LTE) with Task & Ktoonsez AOKP rom, I have it set to LTE/GSM (PRL) mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu) and when I go into settings>More>Mobile Networks>Network Mode, I have it set to: LTE/GSM/WCDMA mode, and all I get is H and H+ still. I have the LTE APN and have it selected, and still no luck. I had a SIM replacement from Virgin Mobile, but it didn't do any good. When I put it on LTE only mode I lose connection to my carrier. So I keep it on LTE/GSM mode, but still getting no LTE. Anything I can do to fix this? Thanks. It used to work when I had Team Insomnia's Jellybean rom, I had 4g but got no where near LTE speeds. Would this be a Virgin Mobile problem?

EDIT: I think I got it, I am on a Virgin Mobile Supertab (From old phone still being paid off) and changed from that older phone, that didn't have LTE, to the S3 , I went into my Virgin Mobile "My Account' and it showed my phones it only listed the HTC Legend I had few months ago, but not the S3 itself, and beside it saying this device runs on a HSPA+ network. I'm getting this fixed on Monday so I'll see what happens then. If somebody can do it sooner though if they have the same issue with Virgin Mobile/Bell, that would be great too. The system I guess still thinks that I have the HTC Legend which doesn't run LTE.
Anybody on the Bell network having signal problems while running AOKP? I can't seem to get my phone to run LTE and my signal drops randomly. I've wiped, fixed permissions, enabled the proper settings and still nothing.

No network on US version with ATT

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem or can help with a solution. I just got my Oppo 7 (love this thing) but it seems the network doesn't work properly. The network seems to be picked up just fine, full bars, under network settings it automatically acquires the APN settings and everything, but I can't do anything over the air without WiFi. As soon as the WiFi is gone, I can't browse the internet, send or receive text messages, etc. What do?
Will this help? Won't be LTE, but H+ (my phone doesn't have LTE)

That's odd. There's one thing wrong with this device on stock - its APN database for AT&T is 3-4 years out of date. It was still using the wap.cingular APN when I turned mine on.
You need to manually put in the AT&T LTE APN (pta). ALSO if you've never owned an LTE device before you'll need to talk to AT&T to have your account updated. (Using the pta APN with a Nexus 5 resulted in no data for me too until I had my plan/account updated. You can do this without an actual contract change - for example I'm still grandfathered in to "unlimited data"). In general I would recommend doing this in-person at an AT&T-owned store, not at the phone and not at a franchisee (like most small mall kiosks).
Thanks for the reply everyone, I entered in the new ATT HSPA+ APN and it works like a charm now.

I went to the ATT store, but they weren't any help. They confirmed that the SIM they gave me was lte compatible, but I assumed that's the same thing as having an LTE data package. I'll give them a call tonight and let you all know. (btw, just re-applied your settings and still no luck)
edit: called.. and they claim that all accounts have lte compatibility now and of course she had never heard of the OF7a
The settings entropy posted were the exact settings my N5 had which I copied over and worked fine. One thing to be aware of is that mine says 4G on LTE and then either H or H+ for those, not sure if this applies only to my service area or what and another might show differently. At any rate if you're getting 4G showing you might wanna run speedtest and see if you are getting LTE.

AT&T's SIMs have been LTE compatible for years, even before AT&T had an LTE network. I need to check to be sure, but I'm fairly certain my SIM is still the original "cut down SIM" that I've had since 2011 at least.
It's your account that needs to be LTE-enabled.
Don't call. Phone support is awful. Go to a corporate-owned AT&T physical store. That's where the competent staff are.
(In my case, I originally did the LTE upgrade on a Nexus 5 - if you put a SIM into a Nexus 5 that doesn't have LTE on the account, you'll get a text message saying to call AT&T.)

You need to verify the APN(Access Point Name) configuration on your phone, in my experience this is normally the problem when switching ISP. Incorrectly configured APNs can cause all kinds of strangeness. In my case when I switch from T-Mobile to AT&T the AT&T rep entered the ANPs incorrectly. This cause speed issues, unable to text pictures and videos(MMS), and the phone had problem switching between towers while moving. A real pain. Once I got the APN correct my phone data performance was better then T-Mobile because AT&T cell tower coverage is much better in my area. Normally two APNs are need, one for 3G and other for 4G(APN type hipri). Also APN type of mms is for multiple media texting, Good luck.
APN config?

Yes, metropcs. When Im running an older rom, specifically, Jedi Mind Trick JB7, I get 4g, you're right, not lte, just 4g. But every other rom I install I only get 3g.QUOTE=jrc2;55704368]MetroPCS?
