[Q] Tmobile phone to Metro now lost my 4g lte to 3g - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I have an unlocked and rooted T-mobile Galaxy s2 T989. At any given time I run AOKP, Dirty unicorn, Carbon rom etc. I brought it over to Metro from T-mobile. I was getting metro's 4g lte now when I activated my T-mobile phone, I don't have 4g anymore. I get 3g. Is there a fix for this? Can I get my 4g back? Please help.:crying:

This phone never had lte support...

It's impossible to get lte on the t989. Doesn't have the hardware for it.

I know that on T-Mobile you can get 4g, but not LTE.

You need to verify the APN(Access Point Name) configuration on your phone, in my experience this is normally the problem when switching ISP. Incorrectly configured APNs can cause all kinds of strangeness. In my case when I switch from T-Mobile to AT&T the AT&T rep entered the ANPs incorrectly. This cause speed issues, unable to text pictures and videos(MMS), and the phone had problem switching between towers while moving. A real pain. Once I got the APN correct my phone data performance was better then T-Mobile because AT&T cell tower coverage is much better in my area. Normally two APNs are need, one for 3G and other for 4G(APN type hipri). Also APN type of mms is for multiple media texting, Good luck.

APN config?
You wouldn't happen to know the APN configuration for metro do you? or how I can find it?

[Q] CM10 ATT - h+ but no 4G

I finally got around to flashing CM10, but can't seem to get the 4G working. I get H+/3g data, but no 4g. I flashed the CM10 nightly from 10/2.
My IMEI is in tact, I know the modem I am using works correctly in this area.
Here if my APN information:

Has anyone else run into a similar problem?
I realized I had a similar problem on CM9 and found two things:
1) APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
I added hipri to APN type (not 100% sure it was needed)
2) In mobile network settings I had not selected LTE in the Network Mode option list. (THIS was my problem) It's one of those, duh of course I have that set moments..when I really didn't. So double check that setting.

First of all...are you in an LTE area? When you were on an ATT rom did it say 4G LTE or just 4G?

I believe THIS was my problem. On ATT roms it would say 4G (I'm not in an LTE area) - apparently on CM roms this translates to H+. Looks like I never really had a problem at all.
Thanks! Consider this solved.
You shouldnt refere to to LTE/HSPA+ as 4G. Just name it by what it is. Much eqsier to identify what the problem area is.

When it comes to CM ROMs HSPA+ will be identified by and "H" and LTE by a 4G

Change the following in your APN settings this resolved many 4g signal issues. I take no credit for this whatsoever. This was from another poster and I had these settings saved I just can't seem to find his post otherwise I would have linked it directly. If you happen to come across it be sure to hit the thanks button. If it really helped you donations wouldn't hurt for the original poster. Thank you. -

Have you actually ran speed test to confirm network speed?
Im actually having the same problem... Im using the infuse 4g with a cyanogen 4.2.1. Iunlocked my phone and am using a t-mobile sim (therefore, towers) and even though my phone is staying in one place the signal is going from E (econ, 2g) to 3g and H ( basically 3.5g) (back and forth) and never really stops...also the signal will be at full bars, then drop to no service and do it all over again.
Im obviously having service problems when i shouldnt and im not sure if im getting 4g at all even though i called and they said my plan was full-time 4g depending on coverage... OR..." H " is mobil's name for 4g (actually HSPDA + HSUPA which is technically considered 3.5).. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

<< GUIDE & Q/A AOSP LTE Issues US / Canada >>

Are you having issues with LTE on an AOSP ROM? Look here for information, and post any questions you may have about the subject.
First, we need to debunk the carrier's explanation of 4g. The carriers will explain to you that if it says 4g on the stock ROM you are using LTE. That is NOT true, 4g on the stock ROM is actually H, or H+, which is technically 3.5g, and not LTE. The stock ROM displays LTE as 4g LTE
So the first thing you need to do is make SURE you are in a location that has LTE coverage. Go to your carrier's website and verify with their coverage map
Coverage Maps:
AT&T
Rogers
Bell
Telus
AOSP based ROMs display your true network connectivity as follows:
G = GPRS
E = EDGE
3g = 3g
H = HSDPA / HSPA
H+ = HSDPA+ / HSPA+
4g = LTE
For Canadian users, you MUST verify LTE / GSM / WCDMA is selected.
The Dialer Code is *#*#DATA*#*# (or *#*#4636#*#*). You will enter the Data Programming menu, to set it.
Here is an app that will access the menu for you:
LTEOnOFF
Reported ROMs the settings stick on reboot:
CM10
SlimBean
AOKP
Now you have to verify you are using the correct LTE APN settings, and if not, add it.
You can access your APNs by "System Settings => More => Mobile networks => Access Point Names"
Here are the LTE settings for ALL US and Canadian carriers:

I'm with Rogers, everything is the same except for the mms protocol. I left mine blank instead of Wap 2.0
I believe cm10 sometimes resets some settings back to default if you don't reboot after changing a setting. But I'm not 100percent sure.

fixed, thx
Will place in AT&T Index shortly.
Excellent job... noob
I'd like to mention that the LTE / GSM / WCDMA selection does not revert after every reboot on any Canadian S3 that I know of with CM10, and has never done so to my knowledge. If this is happening in other AOSP ROMs, it is a ROM specific problem.
The setting does revert to the default after a data wipe though.
Could users of other AOSP ROMs comment on does it stick on reboot?

I've been using Slimbean 2.6 and 2.7 for several weeks now and can confirm LTE is sticking. However I certainly don't think I'm getting the as high a LTE connectivity rate as with the stock rom.

There's so many factors that can contribute to that... too ambiguous to T/S.... It's a trial and error thing... Location, network traffic, and the modem you're currently running...

This is definitely true. Only way I can tell though with a degree of certainty is with a network monitoring app and the fact that I've got pretty standard area of operation.
I've been running kyanrom though for the past couple days and I'm back to getting a much higher degree of LTE connections. I guess while I'm at it, I can also confirm that LTE is sticking with kyanrom also.

Hello,
having LTE issues (Not getting LTE) with Task & Ktoonsez AOKP rom, I have it set to LTE/GSM (PRL) mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu) and when I go into settings>More>Mobile Networks>Network Mode, I have it set to: LTE/GSM/WCDMA mode, and all I get is H and H+ still. I have the LTE APN and have it selected, and still no luck. I had a SIM replacement from Virgin Mobile, but it didn't do any good. When I put it on LTE only mode I lose connection to my carrier. So I keep it on LTE/GSM mode, but still getting no LTE. Anything I can do to fix this? Thanks. It used to work when I had Team Insomnia's Jellybean rom, I had 4g but got no where near LTE speeds. Would this be a Virgin Mobile problem?

EDIT: I think I got it, I am on a Virgin Mobile Supertab (From old phone still being paid off) and changed from that older phone, that didn't have LTE, to the S3 , I went into my Virgin Mobile "My Account' and it showed my phones it only listed the HTC Legend I had few months ago, but not the S3 itself, and beside it saying this device runs on a HSPA+ network. I'm getting this fixed on Monday so I'll see what happens then. If somebody can do it sooner though if they have the same issue with Virgin Mobile/Bell, that would be great too. The system I guess still thinks that I have the HTC Legend which doesn't run LTE.

[Q] ASUS Padfone 2

I just bought a Asus Padfone 2 and love it, problem is I have T-mobile(USA) and can't seen to seen MMS or get 4G internet. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem, its running android 4.1.1. I have tried setting it up using basic setting that I found online but did not help. Any help welcome.
You won't be able to get 4G working, because the padfone 2 doesn't support the US' bands
As for MMS, I know nothing, sorry
The current version is released for Asia market only. Unfortunately the bands won't work here in the US.
Personally I'm waiting for the US version to be released.

Hello, I was looking to purchase this phone as well. I know the 4G will not work, but are you even able to get the 3G working with this phone on T-Mobile or is it hit and miss? I've had international phones pickup 3G, most of the time its briefly. Me and my wife use to have the old LG KS-20 cell phones. When she make Trips to Houston, TX it would pick up a 3G signal, or at least this is what she told me. So I think it would be safe to say (but don't quote me on it) that it would only work constantly in areas that T-mobile have there newest towers. Just idea/opinion. Could anyone confirm?

I live in Houston and it is true that we have some 1900mhz towers and you can get 3G on some iPhones and stuff, but for the most part in most cities I think you can expect Edge speeds on any non AWS bands phone.
As for OP's MMS issue, what APN are you using?

T-Mobile 4G on ATT GSIII

Hi
So long story short, my Tmo GS3 got stolen at my work :/
So my mom gave me her ATT GS3 cus she was up for an upgrade,
i been reading its possible to get 4G on an ATT GS3 but so far no luck,
i know i have the right APN cus i copied the one from my Nex4 to my GS3, i set the network to manual and choose Tmo, but still all i get is Edge.
Does it have to do something with the way i unlocked the phone?
I been reading it has to be factory unlock and i unlocked mine by dialing *#197328640# and doing the required steps.
Can anyone help me with this?

Do a little bit of search work; it depends on the coverage for T-Mobile in your area. It's still a Work in Progress to get the 1700 Mhz band to work on a ATT GS3 since there's a bounty for it in the General section.
Setting the APN to what you have on the Nex4 won't do anything because it's all software and hardware controlled. The software part is currently locked down because no one knows what to change to get the hardware to send and recieve information from the 1700Mhz Band.
Your best bet is to check the coverage map and hope you get 3G service or wait until T-Mobile Rolls out their 4G so the old EDGE will switch onto HSPA for ATT devices that use a T-Mobile Network.
Hope this helps

Does it have to do something with the way i unlocked the phone?
I been reading it has to be factory unlock and i unlocked mine by dialing *#197328640# and doing the required steps.
Can anyone help me with this?

Try these apn settings if they arent what you're already using. They've worked for S3 users before.

No :/ still only edge. Is there a way to know what band 1700Mhz for example do i get in mi zone?

I had the same situation: only edge, after flashing this files i have 4g http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771021&page=25.
Start reading from post #246. If you flash the files you must root your phone like it is a t999, also goes for recovery, im not sure about kernel and DO NOT flash another modem/radio.

No network on US version with ATT

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem or can help with a solution. I just got my Oppo 7 (love this thing) but it seems the network doesn't work properly. The network seems to be picked up just fine, full bars, under network settings it automatically acquires the APN settings and everything, but I can't do anything over the air without WiFi. As soon as the WiFi is gone, I can't browse the internet, send or receive text messages, etc. What do?
Will this help? Won't be LTE, but H+ (my phone doesn't have LTE)

I have mine set up on T Mobile and I'm having the same problem. It's pretty annoying. I've tried a factory reset to no avail. My phone downloaded an update this morning which I hoped would fix the problem, but it looks like it hasn't.

That's odd. There's one thing wrong with this device on stock - its APN database for AT&T is 3-4 years out of date. It was still using the wap.cingular APN when I turned mine on.
You need to manually put in the AT&T LTE APN (pta). ALSO if you've never owned an LTE device before you'll need to talk to AT&T to have your account updated. (Using the pta APN with a Nexus 5 resulted in no data for me too until I had my plan/account updated. You can do this without an actual contract change - for example I'm still grandfathered in to "unlimited data"). In general I would recommend doing this in-person at an AT&T-owned store, not at the phone and not at a franchisee (like most small mall kiosks).
Thanks for the reply everyone, I entered in the new ATT HSPA+ APN and it works like a charm now.
Could you post your settings?. I confirmed the SIM I got yesterday was lte capable but still no dice.

Just putting in the pta APN with no other info was enough for me.
(MMS is probably borked for me until I fill in the right settings for it but I use MMS maybe once every 3 years at most.)

I just realized that you were in here Entropy. I appreciate the work you did with the Galaxy S2 (last phone I had before this one). Do you plan on doing any dev work with this one or are you going to take it easy?

I pulled the APN configs for ATT Phone APN from omni's github (I updated it a few months back to what it was from an AT&T stock TouchWiz Galaxy S4 ROM, so it this is update-to-date afaik)
I've bolded the ones that you actually need to touch, otherwise, don't touch them

I have this as my settings now and still only get H+. (except for the mmsc, you have 3 m's)
Weird thing is that I get 0 connection when I change from phone to pta.
Not sure if locale is the culprit. I'm in Oklahoma City.

whoops made a typo, yea it's only 2 m's in mmsc
try applying ATT Phone apn and rebooting,,
that's weird. did you call AT&T to confirm that you have the LTE data package on your account like Entropy512 stated ?

I went to the ATT store, but they weren't any help. They confirmed that the SIM they gave me was lte compatible, but I assumed that's the same thing as having an LTE data package. I'll give them a call tonight and let you all know. (btw, just re-applied your settings and still no luck)
edit: called.. and they claim that all accounts have lte compatibility now and of course she had never heard of the OF7a
The settings entropy posted were the exact settings my N5 had which I copied over and worked fine. One thing to be aware of is that mine says 4G on LTE and then either H or H+ for those, not sure if this applies only to my service area or what and another might show differently. At any rate if you're getting 4G showing you might wanna run speedtest and see if you are getting LTE.

AT&T's SIMs have been LTE compatible for years, even before AT&T had an LTE network. I need to check to be sure, but I'm fairly certain my SIM is still the original "cut down SIM" that I've had since 2011 at least.
It's your account that needs to be LTE-enabled.
Don't call. Phone support is awful. Go to a corporate-owned AT&T physical store. That's where the competent staff are.
(In my case, I originally did the LTE upgrade on a Nexus 5 - if you put a SIM into a Nexus 5 that doesn't have LTE on the account, you'll get a text message saying to call AT&T.)
