Hotspot shield to avoid data throttling? For 500mb 4G limit? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Did anyone try this? I see the app on Google market advertises that it helps u lower your mobile data, but you can it works? And keeping the same 4G speed. It might not working know.

theres a tethering forum that covers this many times, and yes it works... works very well for me at least. I even upgraded to the 99 cent a month elite plan.

It will NOT work for the DATA THROTTLE plans. T-Mobile still counts how much data you use, and whether its encrypted data or not, its still data. So no matter what if you hit your data cap you will get throttled.
The VPN shield is only for unlimted plan members who get tethering turned off after so many megabytes of "tethered" data.

I misread his post. But youre right. Luckily I'm on unlimited and it works to avoid tethering getting cut off but it definitely doesn't work to lower data usage... I even checked the "how much data have I saved" button and with as much usage as its gotten it still says 0bytes.

Making Tilt2 wi-fi only

My son is using a Tilt2 and keeps exceeding his 200mb limit. Is there any way to make it so that it only used wi-fi and never the data plan? Getting tired of overage charges...
Thanks in advance!

Well, if you turn off the data connection.... yea... But he could just re-enable it.
I would disable it thru the provider - remove the 200mb data pack so he can't use any data services. Then it's wifi-only whether he wants it to be or not...

Internet Plan

How do i know which internet plan do i have?? I'm on t-mobile.com and i can't find my plan.. i have a family plan but i can't tell if i have the 2g, the 5gb, or the 10gb plan
under data it says unlimited , high speed data.. so that means it it has no cap??? they will never slow down my internet speed??
No, I have the Android Preferred Data Plan (5GB Soft Cap) and the website shows Unlimited/Unlimited for me as well. What they mean by that is unlimited data (4G+Edge). Call T-Mobile (611 from a T-Mobile phone) and ask them what your cap is.
do you have the app called my account? if not download it from the market, crappy app but lets you know how much data u used and what is your soft cap.
You can also dial #932# (#web#) and it will tell you there as well.

A question about Roms that have the "Hotspot Hack"

I don't know much about hotspot plans and I just got on Sprint about 5 months ago. I always thought if you had the hotspot added onto your plan that it was capped data?
So my question is how do Rom's have unlimited data when they have the "hotspot hack" on it? Does Sprint not care about the cap? Or is the Hotspot plan not even capped for those who pay for it?
You get 5GB data with sprint hot spot plan
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Well when you use the hot spot app it does a sign in process and I guess that's how Sprint tracks down how you're using the phones data. With the hot spot hack they removed that sign in process which let's us connect without any errors saying you don't have the service..
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
So there is no need to pay for hot spot now?

Not if you're running the hot spot hack. I use it all the time to connect my laptop or tablet free

Thank you for clearing that up. Now I understand. I know there is no cap but I'm paranoid. Is there a certain GB I should stay under so I don't get on Sprint's radar or do they not care? Last month I used over 7GB of just 4G through tethering. My 3G usage wasn't bad.

Don't worry about usage. I'm pretty sure the hotspot hack just cuts Sprint out of the equation and doesn't ask them for verification when you start the app
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I'm not sure but I think the sprint hot spot is infrastructure mode, like a router, and wireless tether is ad hoc, like internet connection sharing on say a laptop.
Some wireless devices see ad hoc but not all. Some devices can be modified to see ad hoc. For example, my galaxy tab and the Motorola Xoom can't see it out of the box new. I had to replace the wpa_supplicant file on the tab with one that was modded for ad hoc networks.
On the other hand, infrastructure mode, everything wireless can see that. That's why infrastructure mode is preferred.

I just started using the hack and I blew thru 18GB. Haven't heard anything from Sprint. I got confirmation from other users who used more than me with no issue. I was just as paranoid when I started too lol

[Q] Forcing 3G

Is it possible to force 3G (with 3G speed, not 2G) to conserve 4G consumption? T-Mobile, obviously.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
3G and 4G are the same technology on T-Mobile, so it wouldn't make a difference. Their 4G is really 3G anyways.

Whenever I drop down to 2G speed, because of data capping, will I be able to boost my speed at all? Or will I be stuck on Edge?
I read someone say there was a code to push the 3G (4G).

There are certainly ways to slow down your data speed, but i wouldnt expect to find anyone working on that.
Also, its not really the speed that matters for the data cap. Doesnt matter if youre on 4g, 3g or even edge, 5gb is 5gb. Just makes a difference in how long you want to wait for your download.

I was actually thinking of making a "throttling" app. What gave me the idea was my brother likes to go on YouTube on my android laptop while I'm trying to play black ops, and he makes me lag really badly. So I thought of making an app to throttle your speeds.
This might help people from reaching their data caps too quickly. I remember when I got throttled I hardly ever used my data. So if I'm throttled before I get capped, I might actually use my full speed when I need it.

That would be amazing. I would actually use that. I use my data mainly for streaming music; would throttling the speed mean I'd get more use out of the 2 gigabytes (i.e; 250 songs instead of 100 using 4G)? Or do all songs require a certain, arbitrary amount of data?

I'm not sure it would make a difference? It would depend on the song how much data it takes to stream. If you really want to save data use Opera Mini and Monaco extend. The latter is a VPN that will compress your data, and Opera Mini is a browser that does the same.

Hes right, data is data. No matter how long it takes you to download it. Like say a 4 megabyte song will still use 4 megabytes weather or not you got it at 6mbps or 6kbps.
The point to my app, however, would be to agravate the user if they were trying to stream youtube or netflix or something like that. It would keep users from using their mobile data for high data uses and encourage the use of WiFi or to simply load facebook or XDA or text websites.
Called T-mobile. Even if you put your phone on Edge, it will still count toward your 2GB or 5GB limit of "high speed data". They said in some very polite way, that they don't care and this is the way it is.
End of discussion?

Well yeah, it says your first 2 or 5GB is high speed, then they throttle down so I guess it wouldn't matter how you get to that cap, the point is you got to it.

[Q] How to tether without tmobile finding out

I'm on the DARTHSTALKER S4 rom and i love it. Tethering works perfectly fine but when i use the mobile hotspot. I check my T Mobile account and it shows that I've been using the hotspot. Once I got to 400 MB T Mobile sent me a message to upgrade if i wanted to tether. Is there any way I can tether without being caught?

That means that you don't have a tethering plan. If you can tether w/o the tethering plan then you should be fine.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
i think alot of the plans come with Tethering (but limited to the amount of data you get before throttling). Only one of the new plans (unlimited data) didnt have tethering built in in my recollection.
in addition to the already mentioned. i read in other threads that you need to use the toggle from the pulldown menu to activate hotspot, otherwise you get the upgrade screen. personally ive always only used the toggle from the pulldown to activate my tether and never received the upgrade screen.

If you are on the unlimited plan, or any plan that does NOT have tethering included, you will be noticed. You have a grace data allotment of i believe 200MB then you are shut off. There are ways around it and Google will tell you those ways
Why is everyone so concerned....
Theres a well known root tether setup for all galaxys called "trevemod tether" with a tutorial in the general sectio for many phones also requires using hot spot shield vpn app .So tether plan or not , you can get away with tethering the data u pay for to any device...
It hides and blocks what u tether to, thus making tmo think your just using a whole lot of extra bandwidth on your device
ROOT is required.

Maybe it is just me, but does anyone else get irritated by people that want to steal bandwidth? Someone has to pay. Maybe people should pay for the features they desire.
Thanks

Absolutely... I'll make a reasonable effort to be reasonable... I called them and asked to pay for tethering to go with my unlimited data plan... so I can watch some netflix on my phone when I'm away on business. I figured an extra $30 would be fair. They don't offer anything like that... although... they charge $10/MB for roaming data in Canada, so... I won't die of guilt.
Besides, as I'm fond of saying... we can't all beat the system heh heh!:laugh::laugh: You're right... someone has to pay. Someone not smart enough to figure out how to get a discount. peace bro.
uhhh we already pay for the data service and the hardware and the os which has it built in. there's nothing to feel bad about. I've used 70gb data in a month with sprint and they didn't complain
