[Q] Serial numbers? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I sent my first-gen Nexus 7 in to Asus RMA the week before the new version was announced.
Yesterday, they shipped it back, and a new serial number was provided in the RMA record.
Now, all of the prefixes I have seen for first-gen models have started with a C. The new one has a D60 prefix. Also, the return shipment originated in San Jose, but I sent my old one to Texas.
I'm sure this is just wishful thinking, but is there any chance they're sending me the new model? I did a search on the forums but found no mention of serial numbers for this iteration.

My serial number for Neuxs 7.2 starts with D60.
It'll be immediately obvious when you receive it and turn it on due to the screen.
Given the serial #, there's probably a reasonable chance they sent you a Nexus 7.2

Well, that would be absolutely amazing to get a free Upgrayedd, especially after all of the unkind things I've read about the Asus RMA process.
I'll post back here when I know more. I'll be out of town when it's delivered, so the suspense will be killing me.

You'll notice it just by the bezel and how slimmer it looks. It's all black without the silver rim.

The only drawback I can think of is I'd have to order a new Portenzo case for it. This is certainly not the worst problem I've ever had...

Pictures of the Portenzo case I don't even know if I need yet? That would be tricky right now, but I'd be happy to if I end up needing to order one.

Don't know of any stores in SA as I am in Australia, but if you vote on the link specified in this thread;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051130
then Casemate may decide to make the case and you could then order it online
I had a xoom and sold it for the tab, The tab fits in xoom case i have, the camera cutouts on the back are wrong but at least its protected.

I have the same issue. Samsung South Africa dont even have the device yet. They are expecting it this month.
In terms of accessories, i have also looked around like a nutter, and i cant find anything.
An Incredible corruptions store in Eastgate said they should be getting this week. I will be checking tomorrow as its Friday.
Thanks, still no luck. Phoned Vodashop vodaworld again today, still nothing. Let me know about eastgate.

Any of you guys from SA find a case???
I've had my tab for 3 weeks now and I still can't find anything. Got some family in the UK - seriously thinking about getting a few from ebay.co.uk and getting them shipped here.
Hi guys,
It fits in an Ipad 1 case. Needs cutouts for power and camera though.

Still no luck for me, Vodaphone shop said they would contact me when they do arrive. Very frustrating, they never seem to get it right in SA.
Saw a tweet from Samsungmobilesa that vodashop's should have accesories available mid June.

Did a few stops today while I was out; IC Eastgate say they will get stock next week, IC Greenstone say they have no clue when stock is arriving. So I popped in at Vodaworld; The Vodashop recons 4 - 6 weeks until they expect stock and the Samsung Mobile guys say that they have yet to get their hands on the device never mind the accessories....

So far the service has been awesome. They email you every step of the order; I know that the package is now waiting to go to Washington Dulles Airport as soon as they finish the customs paperwork...

Will update when it reaches...
Some cool cases that I come across too in China, but no idea on quality.

Yes please do let us know!
Also in SA, and have been searching for a case since I got the tab 10.1v.
But now since Vodafone has dropped/discontinued the V version, i'm a sad panda because it means that 10.1V accessories (or at least a case) will be VERY rare...
so if we can get at least 1 good case somewhere it will help us early adopters a lot
looking forward to your feedback (and thanks all for the links so far!)
ok, seeing as no one has either received their imported cases yet, or no one actually cares to reply... heres an update after we did some research the last couple of days.
(also posted on AndroidZA)
decided to import a case, seeing that it is pretty much the only option...
Apart from the importing fact, we also have just about 2 options of cases
I settled on this one from amazon uk : goo.gl/mbHcJ
They estimate about 3 weeks for delivery so we'll see... at least its quite cheap (though shipping isnt...)
Saw that Have2Have advertises a similar case (goo.gl/3bboh), but called them and their US supplier doesnt have stock, so thats a fail.
But here is another viable option, though it is VERY expensive, but looks gooood...
goo.gl/TjDtg
hope it helps someone. i'll update once i get that case.
[edit: sorry about the links, cannot post links yet apparently - so just copy & paste the goo.gl links into the browser]
case from ebay...
hey people,
the case i had ordered from ebay arrived and here are pictures of it.
fits the ports really well, meaning that i can use all my ports.
microfiber material but feels not as nice as the apple one.
am quite happy even though it is a little loose (due to the material being slightly stretchable). can stand too!

Case Mate Tough case doesn't fit correctly. Good results

I had bought a Case Mate Tough skin case for my phone, and it's had a lot of issues with the power button fit, it would turn off and on by touching the area anywhere near it. I looked around case-mate.com and noticed this case is not on their website, so I contacted Case Mate and they say it's a known issue, and are going to ship me a new one when they come in sometime during in the next 2-4 weeks.. Good customer relations.

Got this email today from them:
Hello,
Thank you for contacting case-mate. I apologize that you are not completely satisfied with your case-mate purchase. Unfortunately, we were given a prototype Nexus phone device from Samsung that we modeled our cases from. When Samsung released the Nexus phone device to the public, they made minor changes that we were not aware of. These changes, affected the fit and function of the case. We have redesigned the case and the new cases will be available on our website in approximately one month. If you send me your shipping address, I will be more than happy to send you a replacement case at no charge. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you. Please provide your shipping address below and a photo of the defective case.
Shipping address :
Please let us know if we can be of any additional assistance.

Sadly for me because I ordered mines directly from Case-Mate.com rather than a reseller. They provided me with a coupon that gives me 20% off but wouldn't give me a free replacement and said that the free replacement is only for people who bought the case from a reseller. HOWEVER, they did refund me for the purchase I made on the Tough Case. So pretty much, I got the case for free if I want to continue using it with the current flaws of it.
So pretty much:
buy case from reseller -> free replacement
buy case from case-mate.com -> coupon code off
They also said the revised case for the Tough Case & Pop coming out later this month will fit both GSM & CDMA models.
i sent a mail to case-mate .
The case-mate Tough for the galaxy nexus is now not available in their website :
http://www.case-mate.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-Cases/Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-Cases.asp
Just the barely case-mate is available !!
I hope a sending of revision of this case, i bought mine from a reseller.
I don't know if they exchange it for internationnal customer?
I hope so, because it's a bad advertising for their brand...
Wait and see !!

Amazon UK (temporarily) stop selling White One X

Amazon UK have put a stop-sell on the white One X apparently due to quality concerns. A colleague was told he couldn't have his faulty One X replaced and they could only offer a refund at this time. He called up to ask why, and they said there had been "quality concerns".
If you go to the Amazon UK page you will see:-
Item Under Review
This product is not currently offered by Amazon.co.uk because a customer recently told us that the item he or she received was not as described.
We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you may still find this product available from other sellers on this page.

Strangely they are still selling the grey one.
good going HTC...
Probably related to the white back not being quite as impervious as they thought. One of the reasons I got the grey one... nothing stays clean in the same house as my 1 year old.
They might not listen to us lot on xda but I bet they'll take notice when a company as large as Amazon expresses concerns and stops selling the product.

It doesn't look like Amazon are selling the grey one either. If you select grey it shows the seller as webtrader instead of directly from Amazon.
Or is this normal? I've noticed that the seller seems to change every day anyway. Sometimes direct from Amazon, other times not. Is that when they run out of stock or something?

Not sure why its not displaying for you but I just double checked and I can definitely still order a grey one from Amazon UK directly from them (not a seller). I would not be at all surprised if the grey ones are pulled as well shortly. I don't think the issue is to do with anything specific about the white casing.

I received a replacement grey from Amazon today (shipped yesterday) so they must still have some. Batch number HT241W - hopefully a good one! Not had time to test it yet.

That's what I'm saying...
Currently 16 sellers of the grey model on Amazon - including Amazon. I think they only direct a portion of the search results to their own product, otherwise the other retailers would never get a look in. Look at the "More Buying Choices" column on the right hand side.
I'm betting that Amazon have returned their stock of the white one, which is why they can't offer returns. I got one from them last Friday, HT23Z (and thus far problem free) so I suspect all their stock was HT23. When they start selling the white one again I reckon they'll have a later batch.
I am an Amazon prime customer so I think it is prioritising the one sold by Amazon directly for me because of the included next day service on it. Sometimes it favours the "cheapest" vendor, which is 15 pounds lower than Amazon directly.....so maybe thats why it showed that one in this case.

Don't think this phone exists... I feel like they just accidentally took one of the photos that was made when the first rumors of the white model came out.
It may or may not exist. They could have colored it themselves, and are selling it off as completely white, or it's like martonikaj said.
Do not check "yes this is a question" unless you are posting in Q&A.

We get them from a few different suppliers actually. I've never opened one myself. It will be back live on the site shortly, for the few remaining ones. We bought a large amount on a closeout, and then got enough to cover our orders + a few extra. Seems someone discontinued it a bit to early so we fixed it. Will come back online soon.

White case, black face
I'm looking right this second at the white GN I bought from Expansys. The body of the phone is white (and gorgeous, might I add), while the front face is black. The photo on Expansys showed an entirely white phone, but I just assumed it was an incorrect photo. (And I was right.)
And, for what it's worth, it came with a UK (I believe? Definitely not standard USA) charger, and an adapter to fit it into a standard USA outlet.
Since it looks like one of the Expansys fellas is in this thread, thanks a lot. Really enjoying my purchase :]

The photo on their page really is sort of confusing. But, given how many black-and-white shots and reviews I saw, I sort of went with Occum's Razor.
Really minor point, but definitely one that confused me for a bit too.
FWIW...I just ordered one the other day and it is white body with black face. I was hoping for something unique. But oh well. Still a pretty phone.
Awwww I was pretty excited as well.

ASUS repair service.

I sent my new Nexus 7 back due to massive, intermittent screen flickering and I was wondering if anybody else has done the same?
The status of repair is:
"Product was repaired OK and is now packed ready for shipping or pick up."
I am wondering if they even fixed anything or if they are just sending it back. I was hoping they would replace it altogether but it doesn't that way.
Thanks for any responses.
Probably they changed the whole screen.
Most tablet manufacturers will just replace the tablet. Because of the amount of time it will take. Unless someone actually works for the warehouse issuing out Nexus 7 replacements you will not get a solid answer. Just check the serial number when you get your Nexus 7 back.

Some folks are touchy about them. If the company actually goes through the returned units and really does refurbish them, they can be better than new. Unfortunately, a lot of companies like to power them up, see that something is displayed and call them "refurbished". Dunno where ASUS fails in that spectrum...

Well it's on it's way back after only two days in repair. I'm not feeling to confident.

Most likely a refurb with that quick a turnaround.

I'm just hoping they didn't send the same one back because in my opinion there is a hardware related screen issue. The problem is somewhat intermittent so they could've missed it.

Same here, RMAed it because of light bleed and dead pixels. It was on the status "REPAIR IN PROGRESS" since Friday morning (sent to the EU repair centre in Czech). Now it just turned to: Product was repaired OK and is now packed ready for shipping or pick up.
Crossing my fingers that they actually repaired/replaced it
Does anyone know for sure that if you send you Nexus into Asus for a warrant problem, do they send you back a refurbished unit or a brand new one?

No. There's no knowing 'for sure' unless they tell you (and even then).
There's no stated policy concerning it, so it's entirely case by case.
If you send a unit for repair, be sure to record the serial #.
That's the only way you'll know for certain.
The refurbished ones are generally indistinguishable from new.
Most places will send a refurbished unit unless there are absolutely no refurbished ones available.
Last month I sent my 2012 32GB N7 back to ASUS for warranty repair. I had been living with bad external speakers for a couple months. While transitioning from portrait to landscape when I was watching a video the tablet froze up and started making a high pitched squealing noise. Only thing I could do is long press the power button. Long story short...a little over 2 weeks after sending the N7 away I got the same tablet back with new speakers.
What a fail company Asus is...
Got my tablet back with "TEST OK/NO TROUBLE FOUND" so they call 7 dead pixels NO TROUBLE FOUND?? They pulled this **** on my before with the Prime so they are in for another discussion... WTF do they employ monkeys there??
I got my Nexus 7 back from repair yesterday and is not the same unit I sent in. I can't tell if it is a refurbished unit or new but either way I'm happy it's a different one.... for now.
