so I've been using an app for quite awhile called Android Firewall. Essentially, it blocks/allows internet access to apps that you can specify. However, the app only successfully blocks when there is wifi or 3G signal - on a 4G signal, ads still show up.
this app is great for those free apps that displays ads, as this firewall app will block those ads from showing up (but if the app requires other internet access, then the app will not work properly).
has anyone found an app that is able to successfully block a 4G signal?
thanks!

Adfree Android works really well, but you need to be rooted. Google pulled it recently from the store because it blocked ads, but you can get it from here: adfree DOT bigtincan DOT com (New user rule, I have not enough posts for links :crying:. Anyways, You can even install it from your phone if you have a file manager)
Adaway is great! I've been using this for months now and no ads at all. Get it here.

actually got it to work. the dev responded to my review and indicated that I needed to enable the IPv6 support. now, this app blocks appropriately.
i highly recommend it!

Just wondering if CM7 comes with a data counter to keep an eye on mobile data (3G etc) usage.
I've had a good look through all the CM7 settings but can't find one
I have my connection pretty well controlled via Droidwall so only have gmail, contacts & calendar allowed to have access to 3G data so I'm not going to use much data but a counter may be of use if there's a good one available.
Can anyone suggest a good data counter from the market.
Thanks
3g watchdog, never had any issues with it, the pro version can even count data in blocks if you're data plan is based on it, so i highly recommend this app.
Have you checked the market?

Yes I've had a quick look but there's quite a few to choose from so was after some recommendations from XDA members for CM7 really.
I have t-moble, downloaded app directly from market to oversee my data usage.

Just tried 3G Watchdog & it seems to be quite a decent app - shows details in the notification bar so easy to view.
Will probably stick with this when I start getting charged for mobile data
I use the "NetCounter",it's the most light-weight app for data counter.

how do you access droidwall and set it to only allow certain apps to access 3g data?

Download Droidwall from the market.
Load it & grant it Root access.
In the Droidwall menu enable firewall & enable log.
Droidwall will show a list of all apps/programmes that request wifi/3G access with a "checkmark" box next to each.
You can then check which apps you want to access wifi or 3G or both.
Go into the Droidwall menu & click "apply rules".
At the top of the screen there's an option to have it in whitelist mode (only allows access to whichever you have put the checkmark against) or blacklist mode (won't allow access to those apps that you have put a checkmark against).
I use it in whitelist mode.
Important to say if you download a new app after installing Droidwall then you have to go back in & allow it access.
There's also a log button in the menu so you can see which apps are getting blocked.
Thanks for tips. Works like a charm, but gotta slowly add the apps into the list

Some apps may also need other programmes adding to the list for example youtube may also need media server adding for it to work. In that case I use the log feature of Droidwall to show what it blocked.

Is it still possible to tether using are Dinc. without having to pay the extra service fee?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
you crazy?
yes
I've been using it as my main internet now for nearly 2 weeks since my Cable went out.
Suggested app to use:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
This is the most stable version:
wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk
As always you must be rooted for this to work. Without rooting, tethering will cost you 30$ / month
more backstory:
Google removed that tethering app from the market, likely because of pressure from Wireless Providers. However there are others (barnacle, some flower one that is nearly identical to android tether app). I still prefer the one listed above to those, barnacle never worked well for me and the flower UI was annoying
Cheers.
You can also still tether for free even without root using the stock app. if you change a setting in EPST.
##778, edit, (code is 000000), MIP default profile, change dun networking from ##########@dun.vzw3g.com to ##########@vzw3g.com. Something like that. That's just from memory. Also still works in the leaked GB ROM. I've done it for some friends that don't want to root, but wanted tethering for free for the occasional use. I use tethering, but don't abuse it or use it very often.
I wonder who pushed through banning some of the wifi tether apps in the market.. The carriers with the "censored" market are Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile (Sprint noticeably absent). I can understand why the carriers wouldn't want people having free access to a paid service, but I don't know about Google satiating them and pulling the apps from the market..
But yes, tethering for free is very possible. I've used the built in tethering of CM7, barnacle, and wifi tether, and I'd say the wifi tether app linked to in the first reply works the best. Seemed like the built in tether would crap out after a while, where with wifi tether, it just keeps working and also shows DL/UL speeds and totals.

For the past few weeks, if I tried to update "that tethering app" when I got the update-available notice, Market would respond with the "Not Found" message.
Because, well, like you said...
But this morning it updated without a hitch.
Still doesn't show up in a market search, but updates OK now.
I have started using the xbmc android app on my note 2 for a few days, after a few days of use I got a push notification message from tmobile that said to prevent from tethering future mobile hotspot from being block to sign up, but i have not done any tethering at all, and now as of today i just got a message from tmobile again that said my hotspot service was being blocked, now i notice my xbmc app dose not work, why is the xbmc android app using my tethering data how can i make it use my regular mobile data? I am also not rooted and have a stock note 2 if that helps any.
TMO detects "tethering" by detecting user agents and such. There's no real way to know where the traffic comes from. I suspect the XBMC app just uses standard desktop user agents for its HTTP connections, so got caught by it. If you're streaming from a home connection, try connecting an OpenVPN or SSH tunnel first. The encryption should get you past the retarded block.

I Google search and landed on this page. You have the same problem I have for my tmobile note 3. Anyways, I couldn't find any answers to your question yet but I know that either the app 1channel or the icefilm or the dailyflix app causing it. I got the push msg 2nd time saying now my teher has been blocked. I can't get any movies in the 1channel or the icefilm or the dailyflix app to load if I'm on my lte data. But if I turn the wifi on, and go into these apps, it will load just fine. I downloaded the 1channel app from the playstore and that app has 1channel and icefilm in it, it did the same thing. It will not load anything on mobile data but it will load on wifi. So I think its one of those app that causes tmobile to think your tethering. Try different one from Mashup repo. It will work with your data but not the ones that I mentioned.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the 1st push msg text I recieved from tmobile about hostpot tether, those apps still worked fine. As soon as I received the 2nd text about my hotspot tether has been blocked. All those apps stopped loading any videos unless I use wifi.
Did any of you thought to call T-mo customer service?
I am using Sopcast and I received the tethered message, but as soon as I got it, I called them and yelled at them, telling them that I never tether.
That was way back when they first came up with unlimited data.
I don't know what they changed, but never had any problems or any more messages from them and I use A LOT of data watching live TV at least 10 hours a day.
It is worth a try.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
I found out what the problem is, it all has to do with the xbmc app for android its using a desktop interface which your android device thinks its using a computer thats how your tethering data is being used, but only the xbmc app is using your tethering data any videos you watch will be using your mobile data, for example when you search for movies or tv shows you'll notice xbmc working evertime xbmc is working and searching for content then its using your tethering data, but once you start streaming, it uses your mobile data, so really its only using a really small amout of tethering data when xbmc is searching or updating its plug ins.
What version of adblock are you guys using that doesn't require root. Please provide me with a link thanks.
I downloaded adblock plus from the link below. Although it does work, it requires that your wifi connection go through a proxy. For me it slowed things down and made the Internet act a little screwy.. It did block the ads though..
https://adblockplus.org/en/android-install
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
Wierd I tried that one (yes on wifi) and it didn't seem to block anything. (I also changed the setting that allows some "acceptable" ads through - same thing).
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
Even more weird, that version of adblock brought my connection to a screeching halt. I switched from my N band wifi to my G band wifi (no adblock proxy) and all is normal. Back to N and no go. Double checked proxy, using only easy list, all look correct to me. Removed app and proxy setup for now.
I installed it as well and it did work while on wifi (as they stated.) However, whole sites would be blocked and Youtube and the Play Store would load very slowly or not at all. So I got rid of it and the problems went away. What I really want is Adaway. I have that installed on my hacked HP Touchpad and all services work properly and no sites are inadvertently blocked. With no root in sight though I may never get to use it on the Note 4
I noticed lag with an aBP-clone from the play store but when I changed to the official ABP from their website there was no speed decrease: https://adblockplus.org/en/android-install
Modify wifi proxy then restart it, then modify APN proxy and switch from wifi to 4g a few times, make sure ABP updates it's "easy list"

You don't get Youtube and Play Store issues?
no idea if this is a common, known practice already. try this and see if it works for you. just deny Android System Webview any internet access.
you may find a few apps simply won't work because they utilise it heavily but I also find far more internet based apps that you don't want to block stop delivering apps completely and just carry on without them.
if you find a pretty big popular app stops working drop a comment. so far it's nothing I'll miss on my end.
Try setting your private dns to: dns.adguard.com
Leave webview running then.
It kills all my app ads in the ones I tested but I have few.
Works well for me but occasionally some ad infested websites when using the browsers will get glitchy. Up to a few seconds delays and occasionally need to close/reopen. Most sites run fine though. Been using it for a week or so.
I'm using Adaway and AFWall+ so far, I'd normally have Xposed in some form and minminguard which still seems to work. without the latter it's only in app ads I didn't have a solution for.
I'll try changing my dns too, but more for keeping info away from google.
EDIT: just tried switching to that dns and my wifi went to connected no internet.
also I've experimented in denying internet to google play services and that seemed to work OK too but I didn't notice ads stopping.

Not wifi, 4G LTE.
I never use wifi. It let's me set apps to update by wifi only to keep them static
Wifi is also a security risk for me.
Disabling Google play Services doesn't stop any ads I'm aware off. I normally keep it disabled to shut it up, save battery and to keep find my device disabled.
Some apps won't run (or run as paid version) without Play Services (and some Playstore too) but many of those will if you activate them then Firewall block them, then disable Play Services.
It can be annoying as a reboot is needed to bring Playwhore back online. Lol, I rarely go there now plus it's not always running in the background.
Androids can run quit well for a long time with no updates of any kind.
Lol, my 10+ didn't get the jab
If the app doesn't need internet access Karma Firewall will stop the ad nonsense.
