I've been using Wifi Tether very occasionally, a few times a month maybe. A few days ago received message from ATT telling me that my unlimited plan is about to be changed if I don't call them.
So while I'm on phone with ATT pretending like I have no clue what they are talking about, the person I talked to gave me a list of about 10 apps that they can detect, one of them was FoxFi. Basically anything available at google play is no good...

That's certainly interesting information. I guess the question is, do they care only because you're on an unlimited plan, or will they give anyone trouble for even limited tethering?

Is it legal for them to do that? I'm on a grandfathered unlimited data plan. Pretty sure there is nothing in my contract about restricted apps....

The app is not illegal to use. If you get caught they will force you onto a tethering g plan, but not before warning you first

I think it's more that they can detect patterns in tethering traffic that are not seen in standard mobile traffic, rather than knowing exactly which apps you have installed and are tethering with.
Keeping in mind I have no idea how this works (or if this approach would be legal), but it would be pretty simple to figure out based what content is frequently being accessed via your "mobile device". e.g. if your phone regularly contacts the Windows Update server, they may suspect you're tethering. Combined with some analysis of how you usually use data much more quickly and differently on a computer vs. a mobile, the patterns would become clear pretty quickly. I'm sure if you mapped out browsing traffic of 1 hour on a desktop vs. 1 hour on a mobile phone, they would look quite different for most people.

OK, that makes more sense. I left my tin-foil hat at the cleaners and was worried that AT&T were sending their brain-rays into my head to determine what I've installed (e.g. -- that they have a deal with Google to get access to get a report of installed apps). While that could be true, I expect it is highly unlikely.

Indeed. But tethering my Android tablet for some bigger-screen browsing & such would't trip the sensors (or should I say "censors") with FoxFi's proxy mechanism. Like your Windows example, though, letting a friend tether their iDevice for a big app install might do so.

I beleive there are some proxies you can use to hide tethering but i have no idea as to how to find or implement them

AT&T Galaxy S3, what tethering app is everyone using?

So I know AT&T, being the disgusting American capitalist corporation that they are, decided to completely disable wireless tethering and make you pay for it with a monthly fee on your bill. This is completely unacceptable if you ask me.
This is a thread to see what Wi-Fi tethering apps you guys are using, with and without root. Hopefully we can get a list going so people can try out some different ones if certain ones don't work for them.
I'm using a completely stock phone, unrooted. Just downloaded FoxFi from their website, and installed the apk on my phone. It's usually available on Google Play but AT&T decided to block it. However, I can confirm that if you download the APK and install it that Wi-Fi tethering works perfectly. I connected my work laptop to my phone just now and used dropbox for a bit, and I also tried a few different websites.

When I used to tether with an Iphone att noticed it right away and sent me automated messages... Can they also detect tethering with Android??

if you download an app, the only thing AT&T would be able to see is your data usage. if your data usage all of sudden goes up, that's usually related to tethering.
i use FoxFi on my unrooted Galaxy S3.

definitely not true.
they can tell by the number of 'hops' that data traffic goes through to the end client. that is how they found me. i was using CM9 (built-in enabled hotspot) for 3 months on my old phone and they finally sent me the "Did you know tethering requires a plan?" text, and sent me a letter telling me I had to stop before X date or they'd change my data plan. when I called in playing dumb they listed off a number of apps that i might have used 'accidentally', which was the list of all the tethering apps i've heard of, and asked if i used them.

IMHO, the only safe way to tether via wifi on an unrooted phone would be to set up ADB via wifi, then use Easytether over that wifi ADB connection. Anything that resembles straightforward "phone as transparent access point" is too easy for carriers to detect. You have to masquerade your traffic, and the more opaque you can make it (say, by further tunneling it over a PPTP or L2TP VPN), the better.
A rooted phone has a few additional possibilities, but they involve completely replacing the tethering app that's bundled with the phone with one that goes out of its way to masquerade your traffic and disguise its wifi-routed origins.

You can also change over to a mobileshare plan. It's saving me a few bucks per month, and tethering is allowed with no additional fee.
"Tethering and/or mobile hotspot use is permitted with Mobile Share plans with capable Designated Devices; provided, however, that such use is limited to a maximum of five (5) simultaneous users per Device." "If you use a tethering and/or mobile hotspot Device with more than five (5) simultaneous users, you agree that AT&T may suspend or terminate service to the account."
So it looks like they're watching for multiple receivers in the traffic and if they see more than 6 (the device itself and 5 attached clients), then it flags.

Good call on Elixir 2. Works really fast on an non-rooted Galaxy S III

Foxfi worked perfectly for me up until this latest OTA update and now it won't work at all. Was using Power Toggles to activate it, but this is no longer working. I've been searching for a working replacement for the last few days without any luck so if anyone has found an app that works after the update I would greatly appreciate you sharing the name. Thanks!!

I use wifi tether on a rooted S3. It works pretty well. It has similar options to that of a router.

So what app were you using when you got caught? Rooted?

He was using the built in tethering feature of CM9, which is also part of stock Android.

I use wifi tether. It was the only thing that let me connect to my vpn and tether at the same time.
Haven't used it very much tbh. Maybe 2 hours total in the past couple of weeks. But so far so good
I don't think att would have an idea I was tethering since all the data is going through my vpn and is encrypted.
If they somehow managed to find out, I'm prepared to take them to court and will ask for proof in discovery which would make everything public as far as how they caught me.

Hello all,
I have been using this tethering method for a few weeks now, but all of sudden, my phone gets stuck on "Please wait while verifying..." message. It never errors, and I can cancel the process. I have tried to restore the offical tethering files, in hope to get the "Please call blah blah for more information message, but the same result happens too. My phone did recently download a system update, but I haven't allowed it to install. If anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Netflix blocked?

Hello all.
I used the trevmod to get tethering working on my device and everything up until today has been working great and could access everything with just the user agent mod.
But today I got the dreaded push message about tethering when watching netflix and doing homework. Web browsing still worked but my netflix stopped.
Has anyone else noticed that netflix is being blocked from tethering somehow now?
Anyone possibly know a way arround it?
I have installed hotspot shield on my phone and that didn't seem to make a difference.

It's not Netflix specific.
I've been throttled pretty much for the last couple months. Nav and cyan Pandora. Went out of town. Netflix takes up more data than Google

Not so much that it's throttled but actually blocked desktop streaming some how.
I started streaming ok then got the push message to my phone saying it was blocked.
Like somehow, even with user agent string being changed, it counted the streaming data of Netflix toward the free 100 mb before blocking even though never did before.
But yet, with user agent being changed, the web browsing itself never got blocked.
Even with the default ie9 user agent wasn't blocked either. Just Netflix streaming.

No one else has seen this?
I tried again today and in a different area just to make sure was not a fluke and had the same problem.

So now one else that does the work arround onT-Mobile tethering has noticed their netflix streaming is somehow blocked?
Tethering still works perfectly fine it is just the netflix that don't work.

Download hotspot shield vpn on the android market and run the vpn on ur phone. Connect with trev mod like normal and you wont need the user agent switcher. The way it works is it blocks tmobile from seeing the type of data you are using and they wont know you are tethering.

Ok, here is my final conclusion and we can hopefully put this to rest, at least for some but hopefully many. Kal-El7 and myself spent quite awhile trying to figure out why tethering has suddenly stopped working for so many people. This may or may not be a solution for you in particular but it's good knowledge for those of you being affected or would be affected by this.
It appears T-Mobile has greatly expanded its detection of browser user agent clients. I can't seem to type just anything in a browser user agent spoofer. I used to be able to. Now it seems you must have a legitimate browser or you get the upsell. This has been my problem as of late and we couldn't figure out what was going on until we started ruling everything out. Oh, and make sure you don't use any Google web pages when testing user agents because apparently Google pages don't trigger the upsell page to appear (I think this has since changed and you may get the upsell). You can visit the following page for a comprehensive list of user agents:

This is the string I use as my agent in Firefox using the Add-on User Agent Switcher 0.7.3:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1)
In Chrome, install the extension 'User Agent Switcher' and then select 'Internet Explorer 7' as your user-agent.
Update: 07/20/2013
All this time and only now do I realize I didn't even mention what ROM I'm using. DOH! I'm using Tweaked 2.3 (as of 08/15: Tweaked 2.4.1) with default kernel and no additional mods or tweaks. You can use the built in tethering but I prefer to use a tethering app for additional features not available stock.

I've had requests about the tethering app I use so I'll outline exactly what app I'm using and what settings I use:
ROM: Tweaked 2.4.1
App: Android-wifi-tether 3.3-beta2
URL: http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com
If you're using Tweaked 2.3+ ROM (and probably other ROMs). DO NOT change APN options within Android settings as it is not necessary.
Make sure these settings are checked or unchecked in the tethering app settings:
Change Device-Profile = Samsung Galaxy S3
Change Setup-Method = Netd-Ndc (master)
Send Netd Max Client Cmd = Checked
WiFi-driver reload = UNCHECKED
WiFi-driver reload 2 = Checked
Routing fix = Checked
You can change other settings to fit your needs. If you discover anything useful while experimenting with the settings please feel free to post your results.
Thanks to Kal-El7 for all his help in ruling everything else out in order to come to this conclusion. I'm forever grateful that he took as much time as he did in helping me.

LOL, this is funny! I used Dolphins Custom User Agent feature and put Windows IE user agent string in there and immediately got the tethering upsell page on my phone. So I guess this means the sky's the limit as long as we use a whitelisted user agent. Good stuff!

i found that tether stopped because of roll out of LTE in my area. so i had to use fast.tmobile apn instead of the epc.tmobile.com and change my apn type from IPv4 to IPv4/IPv6 and that was all.

Funny things is that I can trigger up sell text message without tethering and with wifi OFF. When I download videos from YouTube using tubemate and choosing high resolution videos to be downloaded, I receive up sell sms and data being blocked for use with tubemate, but still works with "regular" YouTube app.

Yes, I'm sure. I can use LTE while wifi tethering just fine as well. I'm using Tweaked 2.3 ROM and I do not need to turn on the tethering apn options in settings. I am using the latest android-wifi-tether for root app found here:

As long as I properly spoof my user agent I'm good to go. Been watching Hulu in HD on my desktop and used up 30gig over LTE. Life is good.

I don't tether at all, but hit about 6GB per month on my phone , and I get the up sell text message 2/3 times per cycle. The last one always states that tethering has been blocked.

yep get it every month, I was curious as to what it was actually till I read this thread. I don't tether or turn on hotspot. Maybe they look at the volume of data, and assume I am using a PC

Not really sure on that one. I've only received that when actually triggering it doing the obvious. This is the first I've heard about that as a random occurrence.

Tethering stopped working for me since LTE became active in my area. However, I can still tether using the User Agent spoof, but I never like using it because it restricts me from streaming netflix on my browser. The only way I can get around this is by rolling back to 4G APN settings and changing Network mode from LTE/4G/3G/2G to 4G/3G/2G. Now my tethering is working just fine.

Copy/Paste this user agent string exactly as it appears below into your agent spoofer and report back if you can use Netflix. Working for me.

The fact of the matter is that changing your user agent does ABSOLUTELY nothing to hide your tethering. When you transfer data (more specifically data packets) over ANY network, those packets have very distinct packet headers. ALLLLLL they need to do is look at those packet headers and see the peculiar and distinct format for an uplink, and you are caught.

I definitely use a minimum of double that, around a dozen gigs per month. I have never seen this message.

T-Mobile cant see a single thing I do on either my phone or when tethered. All, and I do mean ALL of my data ( headers and data ) , runs into my home server over an rsa encrypted tunnel Granted, I dont need to tether often, but I do like my data privacy. Apparently T-Mobile is allowed to look deep into your data packets per the contract you signed with them. Doesnt that make you feel good? I mean ... if any of you are like me, I use my phone for online banking, RDP / VNC into government servers, FTP / RDP / SSH into my home servers, managing my personal website , etc.. Security is a big issue.
I also highly recommend against using public proxies as they will have full access to anything you do. It takes about 10 minutes to set up a home tunnel provided you are even the least bit tech savy ( which if you are on XDA and using roms, means you have some skills ). Granted you will want a halfway decent home ISP. The dedicated server can be as old as a p2 with 256Mb ram. Doesnt take much.

Very nice. Security is always a good thing. Odd though that if they can see all that, why aren't they contacting me or sending me a threatening letter when I tether with no tunneling or VPN use? You would think after 200 gig over the last several months they would have said something to me by now. I mostly watch Hulu and Netflix in HD and that adds up in GB's quick. I very occasionally use BitTorrent but use BTGuard to encrypt its use. Still, no issues except for the occasional upsell page when I have a user agent spoofing issue. I think they use very basic detection schemes but elude to something more advanced. Proof is in the pudding as they say.

Cant Access Torrent Sites?

Hey guys just like the title says. It doesn't matter if I'm on mobile data, or home wifi. Reformatted my phone with Wilco's 1.1 ROM and they won't access. Tried Community beta 1.1 and still no dice. My laptop at home can access sites like eztv torrentz.eu and the like. So its not my Internet connection. Any insight?

Try the kickasstorrent pro app. It works as search engine and torrent handler

believe the service providers are blocking this. I can only do it on WIFI, it's been like that for over a year and everyone I teach how to use torrents have the same issue

I have Sprint. I can access some sites. I believe KickAss is one, Torrenthound is another. However even on wifi I can't access sites. So it's not Sprint on my end. But my wife's computer can still access in wifI but my phone won't. Just weird.
