Can I use cpu tuner with custom roms? - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

Hello,
I have installed the monster v12 rom for my galaxy w and it is really great. However I like tinkering with my phone so I have found about this cpu tuner app which is basically a cpu governor. I tried it a bit and started wondering if if it might interfere with the built in cpu governor. I tried searching for an answer however I didn't find it. Could you please help me out?
Thanks!

Yes .
although if you go to settings >performance you can change some stuff (depends on the kernel you installed)
for good options for cpu governor use (smarta$$V2) for the i/o scheduler use (ROW) you can play like every game on your wonder !
i hope i helped you !

[Q] queation about SetCpu

ok, i searched for the problem i had but couldnt find anything relevant. i hope someone can direct me to it, if there is any already, or give me an answer,
i downloaded Setcpu and ive seen most of people using "conservative" scaling for better battery life, but i dont see that option in the app. i just see ondemand, userspace and performance.
any idea if im doing something wrong?
and also i would appreciate if someone can tell me the settings for longer battery life? wanted to try it but didnt understand that much.
thanks.
btw im using virus rom rc3 with stock kernel.
The governors are kernel specific- if the kernel doesn't support it, it won't show up as an option. In your case, conservative scaling is not supported by the kernel you are using.

oh ok. now i got it. thanks for the info.
Both Netarchy and Kings kernels have "conservative" governors on them. One of the top ways to conserve battery is to make a profile setting for Screen Off where you set the min and max freq to the lowest possible setting. For me though I can go to 128 Mhz, I get too much lag on wake-up and therefore set to 384. Your phone may do better.
Someone also made a thread that describes the advanced settings. Tweaking those can also improve battery life as well.

A Few Questions about UnderClcoking and OverClocking

Hello people !
First a Fall , I am a member since a long time here , but never used to interact as i had jumped off the android bandwagon . Now i am back with a band with my new purchase of a really Awesome Samsung S3 :fingers-crossed:
i need Some help from you guys for a project i am writing .
I am writing on how under-clocking and over clocking an android SmartPhone would affect its hardware & software. mainly Focusing on How would the changed affect its performance , Stability and Battery life . And finally arriving at an optimum clock speed and if possible and algorithm to finding that optimum clock speed if its there .

I had an xperia play which i as using a long time back . its working perfectly fine . I decided to use it as i know the risks of over-clocking and how it may be dangerous to use on my primary phone atm .
All i am asking you guys is how can i go about this ? what all do i need to do to change the clock speed of my play ?
what apps can help me measure the battery life , stability and perfomance cahnges ?
basically please help me in anyway you can !
i will credit everyone in my study who helps :victory:
lets see the starrt of a great project !

To over clock or vice versa, you need to have a custom kernel that allows it. A custom ROM is also good, but not always needed, but it is suggested Some apps on the market have over clocking abilities but an over clocking kernel is needed that is compatible. Also those apps have a kernel, but is specific to some devices. But go to your device's forums and find a kernel that has over clocking abilities then flash it. Some apps just allow you to over clock to the SET speeds of the kernel being used. Also for battery life, I suggest you use betterbattery stats on the market.

SO which config would be the best ?
hey Thanks for your help bro !
considering i am already in the forums for my device , can someone recommend the best kernel and the best rom to install ?
And how do i go about installing it ?
PLease keep in mind it should be able to support maximum over clocking and underclocking .
Thanks !
Underclocking is doable with just root access, which can be obtained by using ZergRush. This will only work on firmware 4.0.2.A.0.58 or lower.
For overclocking, I would recommend DooMKerneL which requires an unlocked bootloader. It supports frequencies of 134MHz to 2GHz, though I think the stock kernel can go down to 122MHz or 128MHz or something (DooM changed the frequency table in his kernel).
To test the stability of your phone after overclocking, you can run stress tests with StabilityTest. Underclocking will not change the stability of the phone, it'll just make it slower.
My favorite ROM is Gin2JB, although anything stock-gingerbread-based should work just as well.
For testing performance, I recommend AnTuTu
Thanks again
Thanks for your help !
Now one question , does doomkernel have inbuilt over clocking and under clocking ?
also as you said it resitricts the underclocking to 134 Mhz but the stock goes to 122 Mhz . isnt thier a way to make this one also go the lowest possible value?
and what about the Adreno 205 @ 245 MHz GPU that the play has .. can we overclock underclock that somehow ?
Thanks again
Yes overclocking capability is built into DooMKerneL, and of course underclocking. You'd have to talk to DooM about putting in lower frequencies if you want anything lower than 134MHz in his kernel. He tried overclocking the GPU at one point, but it oddly gave worse performance in a blind-test so he removed it.
While we're one the subject of over clocking, you NEED an app like SetCPU to overclock right? Just wanna make sure DooMkernel isn't already set to 2.ghz. Yeah probably a noob question...

Yes, you need an overclocking app. I think it defaults to Min:249Mhz Max:1017MHz. The Min might be lower, dunno. The Max definitely is 1017MHz (1GHZ) until you specifically tell it to overclock though
I would like it if theres a kernel that ALSO allows to underclock and overclock teh GPU AND CPU .
Otherwise i take it , Doom is the best to go forward with right ?

[Q] Over/Under clocking

I was wondering on how exactly I do this? I looked through and seen people talking about it, but not how to do it. Can someone explain to me what it does, and how to do it?

There are actually several ways to do this. The most popular of which are to have a rooted rom, install a separate application and use that application to modify your cpu speed. The more popular applications to do this are:
SetCPU
ROM Toolbox
ROM Toolbox light
I've used all of these and if I could suggest one to you, I would say ROM Toolbox, because it gives you a lot of other tools that SetCPU does not. HOWEVER, I find that in regards to overclocking/underclocking and setting profiles, SetCPU is much more handy and offers more customization.

Is there any certain configuration that you find best? Thanks for all the links and suggestions also!
System tuner pro is also nice. There is no " right" settings. Your phone might not like my settings profile. They are all different. I do however under clock. I see no lag on cm9 beta1. I use a Max CPU of 1ghz. I also under volt everything by -25 because -50 on Evert step crashes my phone. Yours may like it. Just remember do not push the set on boot button until you are sure your phone can handle the new setting.

It is pretty much a try what works. I find that over clocking is nice for certain things, but I like to have a long battery life as well, so I have mine set up so that the CPU is usually running ondemand 800-200 and for certain programs, ondemand 1200-500 and when the screen is turned off it is ondemand 500-200. I haven't had any problems and my battery life is generally very nice. Everyone's phone is different though.

[Q] How To Fix Game Lag

Hey, i have this problem from the begining...
So i have android version 4.2.2.
I'm running phone on franco Kernel 3.0.85 with Paranoidandroid Rom 3.56, Also i use app to OC my phone to 1,6ghz.
So everything is okay expect gaming , example when i play temple run 2 and i set on the best quality it will not run smooth you can see lags ingame and i think this phone should run it easily.
I was reading forum but i didn't found any solution for my problem, i tried to find busfreq_static with following informations :
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/busfreq_static
but there's no busfreq_static file when i enter to cpufreq directory , i use File Explorer just to check am i able to find busfreq_static file but i can't.
Any solution , any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I already know you OC, but you overclock controlling voltages yourself, or rather you rely on SR to do it for you?

first, dont OC to 1.6!! the following may help you:
go to Settings and click on Developer Options and enable Force 4x MSAA. Multisample anti-aliasing (MSAA) is a technique used to improve image quality. Since the Gnex has a GPU capable of supporting MSAA. Keep in mind this will also cause your GPU to work harder and your device may get hotter and consume more power than normal. It’s also possible that all games may not support this.

I'ts not problem about OC , even if i set to 1,2ghz there are no changes , i just dont know what could be the problem , cuz the game runs smooth on other phone which is not good as this one , thats weird , im not controlling voltages , i didn't touch anything.

No , it didnt help. I already tried it before , but when i Force 4x MSAA it just makes game more lagy , maybe cuz of game , anyway i gave an example Temple Run 2 , but even other 3D games are laging , why shouldnt I OC to 1.6 , could brick phone or ?
It can blow up your cat. If it's the same with 1.2GHz... Why are you OC'ing? Go do some reading on voltage control and smartreflex on 4460.
Something tells me you're forgetting basics on how to OC on this device. If you don't supply enough voltage for all the cpu steps, device will stutter and lag, might even reboot.

first thing you need to do is disable SmartReflex® across the board, so that your user-defined voltages stick.
messing with voltages is very device-specific. increment voltage by small ammounts, stress-test and use the device for a while to make sure it's stable.
have you tried running those games while running Google's stock kernel?

Do you even know anything about ROMs and kernels?
When I said have you tested this on stock kernel, I meant, did you try this on stock ROM, but specified kernel because, it's like, common knowledge for someone who flashes ROMs, that custom ROMs devs often alter kernel (and ramdisk) to support features on their custom roms..
Have you for example tried reflashing PA, and just PA, nothing else? Does it lag then?
Have you for example tried fully reverting back to stock? (factory images)
Why is it that you just want your games not to lag, not even trying to gain a deeper understanding about what people are telling you.
Listen, this is the last time I'm saying this:
I told you to check your voltages, since you're OC'ing, and expecting SR to do the job for you.
Test by reflashing again PA, with no custom kernel.
Test by going back to stock, through fastboot/factory images.
Temple Run 2 on best quality lags in mine too.Probably it was designed for 1080p.Just keep the graphics a little lower, doesn't affect gameplay or quality

Firstly, I assume by the size score that you are using Antutututu. If so then you always get variance in the scores, and yes it can be 4k difference.
Next, I'm gonna bet that you are seeing thermal throttling, where the device is turning off 2 of the cores due to heat.
I've only noticed this behaviour recently myself. It's a real pain in the arse. I've downloaded trinity kernel app to get around the problem. In his app you can turn off thermal throttling and force the two other Cores to stay on.
This isn't a permanent fix though as the settings don't want to stick for some reason that is beyond me.
Next, is there no reset to default in no frills cpu app ?
Or you can uninstall no frills and make sure you delete any folders off your sd card, then either reflash your rom or you could even flash AICP kernel.
This should get you back to default.
Finally if you still think it's your settings, you could tell us all the settings you have changed and between the guys on the forum we could tell you what to change back to.
All the best rich
**just had a quick look at no frills on play Store. Looks like there's not loads to alter.
I like interactive governer and row scheduler (as we can't get row I use deadline.)
Min frequency wants to be at 384 and max at 1728.
That's the basics.
