Magnetic sleep {Confirmed} - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I didn't see a definite answer so I broke out my magnets and started testing. There is a mag lock feature in the N7 V2. It's about half way down on the left side. So sleep/wake cases will work just fine.

Cool.

I am so glad they did not change this, it makes it so much more manageable.

I got a case from EasyAcc today. Most times it wakes the device. Often when it is asleep for a while it does not wake up. Misplaced magnet in the case? Bug in firmware? Got latest original.

I got the caseology case that has magnetic sleep and I haven't seen it failed once.

New Poetic Slimline is worse then the original?

As you may have heard Poetic is sending out replacement slimlines to everyone who bought the originals.
I just received mine today and I feel it is a step down from the original.
Here are the points I noticed right away
The front cover is very stiff and not very flexiable (though I could assume over time it will loosen up
When folding the front cover flat againt the back of the tablet, it seems to put the tablet to sleep.
When trying to fold the front cover into the kickstand mode, the magnets do not hold up and the kickstand collapses.
There is a lot less of the microfiber material on the interior of the case now.(not a major flaw, just seems like a step down.)
Did I get a defective replacement? or did they just majorly fail with this new model?
How do you tell the new from the old? I just bought one from amazon and don't have any of those issues.

The original had 3 visible magnets on the edge of the case while the new one has 2
I agree on the micro fiber, its the first thing I noticed. The other points you make I am not noticing. I had no problems with the original.

hmm odd, oh well its still a free case. hopefully no one else has issues with the new model
hmm, I bought my case from an ebay reseller, I contacted him if I can get a replacement.
mine was the old version with 3 magnets I confirmed this.
I didn't receive the new one yet, but i have a question for the 'old' one.. Did the magnet wake/sleep function work for you? Mine seems only to wake 1/10 times and never puts it to sleep
mine was/is perfect.

I haven't received my replacement yet. I like the original. It wakes and sleeps fine, never had issue folding it back and sleeping. I think the closure is good and strong, I found opening from top edge, works fine though never had issues. I am glad it snapped in tight. I don't want it popping loose on it's own randomly. God forbid dropping it and have it pop out and fly across the room.
I'd love to see a comparison video of both versions. Maybe one of you guys who received a replacement wants to do one.
I like the new version. It feels more "sturdy". I have a dbrand skin on mine (just the back). The N7 doesn't feel loose in the case. Feels fine, but that may be because of the skin adding a little more tightness.

There's nothing to compare visually except the new one has 2 magnets not 3. They are functionally the same. Watch a video review of the original case and that'll suffice.

Interesting keyboard case on eBay

So I was browsing for keyboard cases for my Note 10.1 the other day and found this case:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Slim-Blueto...vers_Keyboard_Folios&var=&hash=item3a844f9c90
Seems interesting because the keyboard is detachable from the case via a magnet on the back of case.
My only concern is that the magnet on the case might mess up the S-Pen. I've had a case with magnets and it indeed interfered with the Note's S-Pen.
Anyway, has anyone heard of this keyboard case?
I'm almost read to order one but the viewing angle looks a little steep?
I did not see any mention of magnets in the description, it's an aluminum case.

Hi kkretch,
The case does seem to have a large magnet on the back where the keyboard part is attached to. Which, by the way, is one of the nicest features of this case. You can either choose to use the tablet with the back cover, or attach it to the keyboard (see picture attached).
Now, I'm not sure how it will interfere with the S-Pen. But magnets and the S-Pen don't go well together.
Here's another seller selling the same item with more detailed pictures:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ultra-Thin-...vers_Keyboard_Folios&var=&hash=item3385635c0d
And as far as I can tell, the viewing angle is adjustable.
The case seems to be very well built and slim. I might take the risk and order one.
Let me know what you think.
If it is indeed a magnet holding it on I'm going to pass, but if you do get it please tell us how it is.
Did you notice the links have different prices.
Just so you guys know, the s-pen works by radio waves, so magnets should not affect it at all. Until some proof is provided, im going to assume that everyone who says they experienced it is just convincing themselves that they did.

This is not true at all. Wacom digitizers do use magnets, that's why you don't need a stylus with battery in it.
Just grab a magnet and put it near the S-Pen while writing down something and you'll see.

I have a case with some magnets attached to it hold the stand and it definitely messes up the s pen in the region of the magnets. If the case is removed, the s pen works fine. There's a lengthy thread on that in of the fora here, you should check that out if you don't believe me.
the wacom digitizer emits an electrical field which allows the spen to function without battery, it does not use RF
I experimented a little
it seems low power magnets had no effect (magnets you would find in most cases)
rare earth magnets however were able to disrupt the spen, and were able to penetrate though the back of the device and cause the spen not to work good aswell
the magnet has to be right on the device or right behind it to have any effect, as soon as it moves an inch-half an inch away it works normally again
I ordered one of those knock off samsung book cover cases which also has magnets in it, so i will see if while opened it has any effect on it

My sister had a case with a magnet on her Note 2 and it messed up the S-Pen. Although the S-Pen did return to its original state but it took weeks before it came completely demagnetized.
that's awesome. thanks!
I just bought a note and it came with a no name case. Has magnets that keeps the lid closed. Just two small ones at each upper corner of the case. Havent noticed any interference with it.
I really like that keyboard one, especially since its detachable. Is it possibly to get one with a trackpad? ...like the transformer? Or is that custom Asus firmware allowing it to use the pad?

Own this case
I bought the case the OP was asking about. I have to say that it is a great fit for me. The magnet on the back that holds the keyboard to the case has caused no issues with my SPen. The case and keyboard are very slim and add very little bulk to the overall feel. The keyboard is aluminum which makes it feel very durable. The only con I can find about this case is that the key strokes are a little misleading. Don't get me wrong, the keyboard works perfectly and hasn't missed a keystroke yet, but since I am used to traditional keyboards, the feel of the keys as I type is throwing me off a little. Nothing that time and use won't solve. I also like that the keyboard is removable and I still have a protective case on the back of the tablet.
Overall, this is the best keyboard/case I have found for the Note 10.1 (2012) for my needs.

I will try to take some pics when I get back home. Travelling for work at the moment and do not have that case and keyboard on my Note at the moment. I switch it up with the Samsung case and cover as I don't need the keyboard as often the more I use the tablet. Try to get some pics up on Friday though when I get home.
You are correct though, when the keyboard is off, the screen is exposed. I use Invisible Shield to solve that problem.

I have the same case and have no problems. I doubt it will be bad in the long run considering Samsung's official case has magnets for the wake lock feature.
Don't sweat it. It should only cause temporary interference but nothing harmful in the long run.
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah I'm using the MoKo slim-fit case and I haven't had a single problem and tested it and ZERO interference while flipping the cover all the way around and using the S-Pen. No issues drawing and no random screen on or offs. I had it a week tomorrow and I don't think I've had less then 4 hours of screen time everyday so I think I should have noticed something by now.
Also I know I've had no random screen on offs because 1 day I unplugged it and took it with me but didn't use it all till I got home, it was in my backpack all day, and after 9 hours when i opened it up it was still at 100% battery before going to 99% after a few minutes.
The issue you would have is if a case had magnets that are too strong then you would get interference and you may want to try a different case.

Official LG Quick Cover

Got my nexus today and the official quick cover I ordered came with it too, even though the order indicated part dispatch. I had assumed this meant the case had been delayed.
Have to say it is a very nice case, feels great, nice snug fit and it is really thin. While it is still bedding in the front flap is lifting slightly when closed (see pic) but I am sure this will give a bit in the next few day's.
Not worth £35!!!!! But it is a nice case. If the spigen one is as nicely made (seem to be looking at pics and reviews) then it will make them a bargain
Nice, but I REALLY miss the Nexus sign from the back...

Yes, correct. Notification light is obscured by cover.
LG/Google case design = FAIL
Time to get out the drill or hole punch, shall I take the phone out of the case before I begin drilling?

Was in new gadget blindness mode and didn't really think about the cost, at £35 it is a bit too much.
I reckon at that price the hole punch cut out for the notification light should go for about £4 on eBay

You had me going there for a moment - I had to reach all the way past my keyboard at work to test your theory.
Phew, I am not an idiot after all, although most of my daily actions would prove otherwise, LGoogle have forgotten to poke a hole in their case!
I will have to ring them and see if they can mail me a hole upgrade? If the makers of polo mints can remember to put holes in their products, I don't see why LGoogle can't
What do you think Google will charge me for postage on a hole?
I really like it but to bad the nexus logo on the back is lost
Id love to get this but losing the nexus logo is a no go for me. I think ill just buy a real bumper.
Does that mean that the front flap isn't magnetized? I'd heard it was and that when you open it, it unlocks your screen.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I have the case as well myself. The flap IS magnetised. The magnet is actually located above the volume buttons, so that when closed the magnet touches the screen glass over the volume buttons.
And I agree, while the case is nice, it definitely isn't worth £35, more like £15 and that's pushing it.

Ok...how did you guys get the case? When I look in the Google Play store, it says "coming soon". I'm in Canada (eh?) and never have any issue purchasing other stuff. I got the white Nexus 5 and thought the white flipcase would look SIC!!!
I received my Quick Cover with my Nexus 5 on Monday. First time I have used a case like this and I must say I am impressed. It feels premium (perhaps not £35 premium) and does not add as much bulk to the phone as I expected.
I for one am glad it has no notification light hole as the light used to wake me in the night on my bedside table.
One question to any other owners, is the rear too thick for wireless charging to work?

What happens if the flap is closed, you receive an incoming call and open the flap? Does that automatically answer the call? What happens to a call when you close the flap?

Opening the flip just turns on the screen. All it does is it saves your pressing the power button. You still have to swipe to unlock if you have it turned on, still have to enter your unlock code etc. When there's an incoming call, after opening the flip you still have to swipe to answer/reject/silence the call. And closing the flip doesn't end calls either, it just turns off the display, or the speaker hole on the flip would be pointless.

Case orientation re: charge while using

This is a major pain for me at work. I use this tablet constantly for note taking, sharing network maps, etc. The battery drains a lot during the day so I like to charge and use quite frequently. Sadly, no case that I have seen or used has the kickstand oriented so that the charging port is on top. This makes leaving it in the default kickstand orientation very clumsy for charging the tablet.
Right now I have the Moko slimline case and I love it, except for the above mentioned issue. From what I could tell watching a video review of the Book Cover case, the same issue applies. Has anyone seen or used a case that orients the charging port on the top when in kickstand mode?
Thanks
Im using the poetic slimline case, and although it wont do it normally, I just flipped the tablet around in the case and stood it up. This way the charging port is on top.
No issues other than you can't access the stylus, so if you need that just take it out first. Also, obviously cant use the rear facing camera.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, I tried that with my moko slim case, but when I flip the tablet around the settings button is covered by the case and rendered useless sadly. Otherwise it would have been a great solution as the other buttons that were covered are easy enough to operate through the material of the cover, just not the back or settings button.

It's a universal case holding the tablet with rubber bands at the edges, which doesn't look much nice, but such is life.
The occasional app might need an app like"Rotation", which supports enforced autorotation. Then you still have the nav buttons on top, but you knew that. Fitting the tablet the wrong way allows to hold the case one-handed easily, stick the thumb thru the sling at the zipper and grab the right side of the case. This however works better with the 7" version of the case, which i also use.
