[Q] recover files from phone with broken screen - Sprint LG Optimus G

I have a Sprint LG Optimus G with a broken and unresponsive touch screen. :crying:
I've found answers about how to replace the screen and about how to recover files from different phones with dead screens, but nothing for the Optimus G.
Here's the question:
Is it possible to connect my phone to my PC and transfer all the files?
Currently when I connect the phone it is only in charging mode. I can't use the phone screen to put in MTP (file transfer) mode.

You can try using the adb pull command, might be able to pull the entire sdcard
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app

Use Linux. I currently use Fedora, and adb connects to my phone without problems. The great thing about is that you don't need drivers.
If you don't run some sort of linux os on your box I would suggest installing virtualbox and creating a guest Linux machine.
I believe the popular distros have adb and android-tools in their repos so it shouldn't take you long to get a guest machine setup. Good luck on getting that data.

Try snap pea..I broke my screen once also and was able to transfer my contacts, pics, and any apks that I needed.....download it to your PC then connect your phone it will sync with your phone. you'll see your phones screen on your pc

Snap pea requires you to install onto your phone then sign into the app on your phone. how would i go about doing that with an unresponsive cracked screen on the pos optimus g?

similar issue, need help!
I am having a similar problem and need a hand!!!!!
stock phone with a shattered screen that is completely unresponsive.
It's default is set to charge only when plugged in so i can not figure out a way to get pictures ect. off the phone.
Since there is no OTG support I can't change it to MTP(data sync) and Snappea doesn't recognize the phone since it is not on that setting.
Anybody have any ideas?? It's killing me, I already have my new device but can't transfer anything.

[Q] Unrevoked Not Recognizing Phone

I've searched around for this, but I haven't found any answers for my problem. I'm trying to root my droid incredible using unrevoked on my mac, but unrevoked isn't recognizing my phone even though I have it on charge only and usb debugging on. I'm not sure if this could have anything to do with it, but whenever I plug in my phone there is a pop up saying something about ntfs-3g and a problem that it had. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this and get the root to work?
Few ideas
1 install HTC sync, which is on your phone, this will install drivers. After HTC sync and drivers install, delete HTC sync from computer but leave drivers.
2 if that doesn't fix some friends that I've rooted I actually had to change to disk drive once plug in.
Either way make sure drivers are installed. Best of luck
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Well you don't need to install any drivers on a mac though. Try disk drive mode.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I tried disk drive mode and it still didn't work
Hmm, I don't think I've ever had that error message pop up that you mentioned in the first post, do you have any trouble doing anything when you connect with USB? Do the drives pop up and you can move files around? And what message is unrevoked giving you when you start it up after connecting your phone? Maybe try switching between charge only and disk drive mode.

It doesn't seem like I'm having any trouble connecting with usb. I'm able to move miles around and put files on it. Unrevoked says "waiting for device. plug in phone now and enable usb debugging." I do everything it says, and I have switched between charge only and disk drive mode but nothing happens.
I'm really not sure what the problem is.. Perhaps a hardware issue? Have you tried different USB cables? Maybe a different computer? Are you running the latest version of OSX?

i'm going to try someone else's computer
im not sure why it wasn't working on my computer, but i'm running unrevoked on a friend's computer and it is working. thanks for the help though.
Alright cool, sorry I couldn't think of anything..

[Q] Heresy Alert: SGSIII connected to a MacBook

Hey Folks,
I'm likely to be switching from AT&T to Sprint and will be getting the Galaxy SIII. Has anyone had any problems connecting it to a Macbook? I'd like to be able to sync with DoubleTwist.

try this link, might have some info on how to connect with mac.
http:// galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-on-mac-osx/
The only way i connect my S3 to my Mac is via FTP apps (wirelessly) like Transmit, or i just use ES File Explorer to FTP files back and forth over my WiFi network, or use Kies.
Gave up on USB since it defaults to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) which just doesn't work on Macs. Couldn't get it to do UMS (Universal Mass Storage). As for music, i prefer drag and drop (via FTP).
.....and what's the heresy?? Been using Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices with my Mac since time immemorial.
Well actually i have a macbook pro running mountain lion and i been able to connect it with no problem with android file transfer( an app that is free supplied by android i think) it shows instructions for it when you connect it to your computer on your phone

Syncing with sd_card or usb mode shouldn't be a problem on any device that accepts USB storage devices.
the only difference between using windows and OS X will be the ability to use MTP because microsoft is the only one that supports that particular file transfer protocol.
doubletwist sync, last i checked, didn't use mtp mode regardless of the OS of the box its connected to.
There's also airdroid from the play store that connects with phone via wifi.

Virtual Machine approach to rooting
If you have a mac, and a copy of windows, create a little virtual machine using Parallels Desktop. (Note: VMWare Fusion will not work.)
Once you have your virtual machine running, Install the S3 Snapdragon Toolkit and USB drivers, connect your phone using the USB cable. Make sure to associate the phone with the VM and not OS X when prompted.
On your phone, set the mode to PTP, not MTP. You'll hear the USB device connect sound and the phone will show up as camera device, but don't focus on that. Now, run the toolkit and you'll find at the main menu your phone listed as an attached device.
Many thanks to mskip for his toolkit development.

USB mass storage

Ok, I have had this phone for 2 days now, and still don't know how to get it to show up as a USB mass storage device. Is there something that I'm missing here?
I have all the updated LG software installed. All other connection methods seem to work. I have even tried a widgetsoid switcher to force the issue, but that didn't do it like it did on an older phone I had.
It would sure be nice if this was an option in the USB menu. How hard would that have been?

I am wondering the same thing. I got around it by using the MicroSD card in a card reader but it would be nice to do it though the phone.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think native support for USB mass storage was discontinued in ICS. Some companies still provide it but it's not natively included anymore.

Go here http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-LS970 and get the USB drivers. Uninstall the ones you have if they are not the exact same, then reboot. On the phone select PC Connection in the System Settings Menu. Set the USB Connection to Media Sync (MTP) and check Ask on connection. Leave everything else off. When you plug it in it will say its checking USB driver, just hit skip, and it should mount. It may mount and unmount, then mount again.
This works for me.
You should update Windows Media Player if running on XP

Those are the exact drivers I have.
I have this "sort of" working here on my home PC (Windows 7). When I am connected as MTP, the phone shows up in My Computer and Device Manager under "Portable Devices". I can go into the internal storage, and move, cut, copy, delete files, but it's not even perfect because if I want to do something as simple as open an excel file, modify it, and then save it, I can't. Windows instead asks me to save in some temporary directory because it lacks the capability to save the file directly on the phone. Which is a major hassle.
On my work computer (XP) I have these drivers installed also, and I have also installed WMFDist11-WindowsXP-X86-ENU.exe since it asked me to. Following the same steps as above, upon hitting skip, nothing happens. It never shows up as a removable drive or portable device.
There has to be an app for this or something...

Try dual mount widget.
Sent from my LG-E971 using xda app-developers app
Well, it physically cant be mount as USB storage device, cause it will ruin files.
Unlike many other phones, The G dont have the Storage Card partition.
All your files are stored in /data/media, and mounting entire /Data/ partition as USB Storage will ruin the OS cause its being used by it.
There a folder called /Sdcard/, but its just a trick for old android apps, so all this stuff still actually stored in /Data/Media/

wow, you're right, everything I sent to my phone shows up in the /sdcard folder and also in /data/media.
why on earth would they do this? one of the best parts of android phones was that they were essentially giant usb sticks.
is this an absolutely insurmountable hardware issue? or could a new ROM/OS fix it? what about an app for creating a partition?
First of all, they did it cause of usual lacking of free space for the apps. Now you can fill all 25gbs with games and other stuff.
Second, the FAT32 just too old and bad. Since the G doesnt use the FAT FS and SD card, G doesnt have the file size limitations, pretty stable and got high write speed (Must be class 20)
I believe its must be possible to run as USB Storage from the custom recoveries, when the OS is not running.

I imagine that it will be able to do that too, but that's not very useful on a daily basis. I need it when the OS is running.
I used to use my phone to take files to work with me and back so that I could open and edit them at home. I never dreamed they would get rid of that functionality.
so no app is going to be able to take some of that space and partition it as an sd card, then?
But you still able to do it, dont you?
The only limitation of the MTP - you cant execute files directly from PC.
Also there an app called File Share, which probably solving that issue by sharing via WiFi, not the mtp.

i'll look into File Share.
and yes, technically i can open an excel file, edit it, save to my PC, then copy the new version onto my phone, overwriting the old one. but that's a major step backwards from where we were at three years ago.
looks like File Share wouldn't really do it for me, as both the phone and the computer would need to be on the same wireless network.
at home I have a wireless network, but my PC is wired.
at work my laptop has wireless capability but there is no wireless network.
My phone can be a wireless network, though. So an app that would allow my phone and work laptop to share files through that network, would do the trick.
Or, I need an app that does the opposite of Link2SD. Link2SD takes some SD space and uses it as ROM. I need an app to take some ROM space and make a virtual SD out of it.
Does something like that exist? I bet if it doesn't, it will soon!

Sounds silly, but did you try rebooting your computer? I had to do this the other day when mine wasn't recognizing my phone. Rebooted computer, worked fine after.
Samung's drivers are awful. I had to install, reboot, remove, reboot ad nauseum until I finally got the drivers to work. I also found I had to connect the phone then wait a few minutes before the computer would acknowledge the phone.
specteA 187,
I've only ever had the issue if I've tried USB ports on the front of my machine. For some reason those ports can be a bit flaky.
Plugging USB into the back of my machine causes no issues. Weird.
For me, on Windows 8, I have to switch from MTP to PTP, and then back to MTP for it to mount. It sure is wonky.

I found that if my computer doesn't recognize my phone, I put my phone into download mode then reboot back to normal and the computer will recognize it. Kind of a pain to have to reboot 2x but seems to work for me.
I've had 5 Samsung smartphones (Captivate, Infuse, GS2, SkyrocketGS2, and now the SGNote2) andI use an XPSP3 desktop computer and have never had any issues with computer recognizing phone until the Note2. Odin3 works like a champ on the Note2... it's the plug-n-play recognition for transferring files back and forth that's problematic. Yes, I've uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, Kies, etc, used back ports vs front port... I think it has to do with the MTP file transfer protocol now used. Here's what works for me with the Note2 and the PC:
Connect phone to PC... phone's "USB PC Connection" box opens and you have 2 options: MTP(media/files) or PTP (camera). If PC doesn't immediately recognize device, I do one of two things which always works:
1. toggle between MTP and PTP a few times... if that doesn't work,
2. unplug usb from PC port and reinsert (either same port or another)
Windows Explorer will then recognize device and add "SAMSUNG-SGH-I317" under "My Computer" and list it under "Other" devices in panel.
I had this same problem today on my new N2. Drivers would not install. All I wanted to do was to drag my pics and music onto my SD card. I worked around this of course by removing the SD card from the Note and putting it in the adapter and doing it that way. I still haven't gotten my drivers to install. I may just get the drivers off the Internet

Thanks, Should've mentioned that I've tried all of the above methods. It may be that, since I work on so many Android devices, my pc is just too full of incompatible drivers and I've yet to clear them properly. Even If i did I'm fairly certain that I'll be working on more devices and will screw it up all over again. My network is pretty quick and Dropbox/esFile Explorer is convenient so I really shouldn't complain.

Epic 4g touch will not detect on windows

Well I was going to root my girlfriends phone today, but I cant. Now before you tell me to use a search button, listen.
I tried looking. I've tried every solution I found. Here's what's going on.
I downloaded kies, then connected phone, phone started charging but no detection on windows. I tried a different cable, still nothing.. Uninstalled kies, restarted phone and computer, reinstalled kies and hooked the phone back up. Same deal, charge only but no detection on windows
So I tried another computer, different cable again. Same problem. Charge only, but no detection on windows. I looked at the charging port, no bent, discolored pins. It will charge on an ac charger as well. I have tried everything I know, it won't even detect Odin mode.
Any suggestions?
