128 gb microsd...when is enough ENOUGH!

Come on folks...128gb microsd?!?!
At first I was excited about the Sandisk announcement (http://dailymobile.se/2008/10/20/sandisk-to-develop-128gb-micosd/); but then I asked one question--When will this end?
I'm torn between constantly buying "the next biggest memory card" versus start storing everything I need online.
Sure they both have their PROs and CONs -- but since 99% of my travels are in a 3G area...
...why NOT use one of the many FREE picture/file stores online?
...and why NOT watch movies and vids online instead of a downloaded copy to my memory card?
...and why not start storing my contacts, calendar, tasks and everyday To Do lists online too?
...and why not even run my desktop applications online where I can access them anywhere I have connectivity?
We Tech OGs know this "cloud computing (Web 3.0)" is nothing new--remember DUMB TERMINALS and THIN CLIENTS? Amongst other advantages, it was SUPPOSE to put a halt to ever-growing disk space needs and excessive licensing costs back in the 1980s and 90s. It didn't really fly...and so now Here we go again.
With only a handful of today's mobile devices having more than 640K of RAM, maybe Bill Gates was right after all when he supposedly said "640K of memory should be enough for anybody".

I am not traveling always in good 3G connection area and I like to carry arround the data I need. The more the better, for me it is realy that simple.
Wikipedia, MP3s, Navigation, Presentations, fotos, documents, etc.
With a smal card I have to select the data. The larger the card the easier it will be - just have everything.

Until about 2 years ago, I loaded gigs of TomTom and Mapopolis maps to my SD card. The problem was those maps NEVER had street names and areas less than 4 years old. So I abandoned that and started using Google Maps, YahooGo and Nav4All. The only downside is that an internet connection is now required. I'm now starting to go online with fotos so I can share. I abandoned loading encyclopedias, dictionaries and wikis to my SD cards a long time ago. To me loading those on a card is the same as carrying around hard/printed copies. It's outdated the second you put it on paper. By accessing those online, in theory, you'll have the latest updates.
My only concern with accessing contacts, calendar, tasks and documents online is SECURITY.

Not long ago I spent $60 on a 4GB micro SDHC
Haven't come close to filling it -- but when I saw a 8GB for only $25 last week, I just had to grab it.
I just might do the same when 16GB get to that price point.

I spent the equivalent of $12 on a 4GB Micro SDHC the other day.

I have the same problem and now it has been sorted!

Meanwhile this rule of thumb isn't true anymore. The pressure inside the cylinder affects the power of an engine too. So more cylinder capacity isn't neccessary that much.

Had a 512MB SD Card - was enougth but a bit too small ... !
Upgraded to a 1GB SD Card - was enougth but again became a bit too small.
Bought me a 2GB SD Card - damn, still not enough space ... !
Got me a 4GB Card - ... will it ever be large enough for my needs?
Sitting on my 8GB Card - ... not enough space !!!
Well, avoided so far the 16Gig Card because I think it is just too expensive! Hopefully prices will drop soon - so, 128GB would be cool, I could get rid of my 160GB USB drive.
However, I doubt that any currently available MOBILE HANDSET would be capable of handling a 128GB Card ... !

The more space you have, the more space you´ll need/use
So the "When is enough" will have to be answered by users and not by manufacturers. The day we don´t buy something that will be the day when they maybe say "Now it´s enough"

Keep in mind those Cards will be used as well for other things then Phones. with a USB reader ( that you could carry on your key chain) you could carry complete data of your desktop with those. (pictures. movies,music etc)
I am selling those readers and many company's that have been using CD/DVDs moving to USB readers with cards. >see the picture for sample<

Untill you also fill that bigger cylinder with more air....

I suppose the question is not necessarily whether or not "when will enough be enough" but more so "when will they develope phones with much better camera and video quality? That is when the large SD cards will come in handy. 4 years ago Samsung made a great phone for Verizon Wireless. It did nto sell well because it never had a great sale on it but the thing had amazing video, camera, and even voice to text on it.

like this nokia n98? id rather buy a camera and a phone/pda i mean its not like digital zoom is amazing or anything, but yeah that would use alot of space, so would a phone with better screen resolution then all of the games/videos would be bigger. there probably wont ever be an end because people are lazy so they program lazy and dont optimize code and people want everything to be hd so everything will be bloated just for graphics

it wouldnt make sencse to make a new subunit of SD if it can only go 128 Gb, because face it........ that isnt large enough to support another couple of years.
the jump from 2 Gb to 32 Gb was pritty big, 16 times the capacity.
32 Gb to 128 Gb is nothing compared to that first jump, its only 4 times bigger.

The real question should have been. Where can I get one and how much?

Thanks, but those are SD, not micro SD which is what we need for smartphones.

32GB sandisk microSDHC for $99

just a heads up... did a search on this forum for "32GB" and didnt find anything. didnt bother searching "microsdhc" since so many people would have a different way of typing it out that it would be near impossible to find on a search.
anyways, Verizon Wireless seems to have the SanDisk 32GB microSDHC cards IN STOCK and is selling them for $99 online with free overnight shipping. most places havent had stock EVER since it was released a couple of months ago. original retail price on them began at $240 or something.
unfortunately, these are Class 2 only, but generally it's not the card that's the bottleneck when it comes to speed on your device. i popped mine in this morning when it arrived and have had no problems with reading at all; 350mb XviD avi rips of TV shows like Rescue Me and 550mb XviD avi rips of Top Gear all play back flawlessly on my Samsung Vibrant.
write speeds have a bit to be desired, but i cant complain due to faster cards being unavailable. compared to my Class 6 16GB card, it has no ill effects from what i have so far observed while in the device.
cliffs: $99 for a SanDisk 32GB microSDHC from verizonwireless.com with free overnight shipping. normal price from them is $150, but is on special for now... the original deal was $50 off with the purchase of a Droid X, but that seems to have changed for a limited time. cheapest i can find it anywhere else using Google Shopping is $140 before tax+shipping.

Still, I dunno. I'm kind of on the fence about getting it due to the price (just dropped $550 on the phone itself).

Because I want to be able to ditch my MP3 player (which currently has 30+ gigs of music) and use my phone exclusively. One less thing to carry around.

I think they meant to point out that unless you want to carry around a tiny breakable easy to lose 16gb card in ur pocket or bag and switch out when you need to, having 32gb in one card is more convenient which combined with how newly available the card is, it is quite cheap for the price. You only pay a bit more per GB in this case, normally you'd pay 2-3x more in the beginning for the new highest capacity in flash memory.

What would someone possibly need on a 32 gb that cant fit on a16 plus having access to any pc you plug your phone into plus another 15 approx gigs internal?

I know at least for me, there's never enough space. Unless they somehow manage to offer Terabyte microSD cards. Even the, I'm sure I'd find a sure for it.
Music, movies, games, ebooks, audiobooks, work files, space for pictures and videos, etc.
Do you NEED to have that much stuff on you? No, but it's nice to have access to everthing and worry less about space.
I know I have 14gb of music on my card and that's mostly just ONE genre of music. I have over 150gb of music. And yes, I do listen to all 14gb that I do have on there. It's good to have access to lots of music for parties and get togethers. Remote access is not always a perfect solution.
Again, I don't NEED all the space, but I sure as heck will use it when I have it.
If I had more space, I'd also partition space on my phone for portable apps. Having access to FireFox, GIMP, Openoffice, 7zip, etc wherever I go is a huge plus.

well yes, I agree, there are things to use the space. I'm just saying given the phone limitations wouldn't it be easier to dropbox and/or grab crap off the pc? The thing does have allshare/server capabilities to make that easier.

Do you need to be plugged into the PC to get the files off of it? I assume you do, but even if you didn't, think of all the battery power wasted to get the files when you want them. e.g. let's say I am on a bus or stuck waiting for something and want to watch a show or movie on my pc on my phone. I'd need to get on 3g, hope it can all stream fast enough, and the battery would run out super fast using 3g and playing a video all at once.
Also as for the 32gb 16gb argument. I might be able to work with limited storage, but I personally could fill about 5tb or more with anime and movies and tv shows that I'd like, and if I could carry all of that on my phone, and be able to select anything I want immediately and have it right there, that would be amazingly convenient. Therefore as far as I am concerned 16gb, 32gb, it's never really enough, people can always fill more space. However I will deal with having only a 16gb card on my Epic 4G when it comes out.

I thought the max microSD card the phone accepts is 16 gigs as per specs supplied in the manual. Guess those are wrong then? Good to know! Thanks for posting this topic!!

i can fit 20GB of movies, TV shows, and music on a single card without having to connect my phone to a computer to add more.
THAT wont fit on a 16GB card. i dont carry my laptop wherever i go, therefore i dont really have access to any data beyond the 16GB card. maybe you are always near your computer, but i'm not.

i set the removable card slot as the save point for the camcorder app and recorded nearly 7 minutes of video with lots of movement. no issues when recording.
i then played it back using both the built-in video player and eStrong File Explorer's built-in video player and experienced no dropped frames, freezing, or slowdowns, nor did the audio and video go out of sync.
i'm a hobbyist photographer so reliable, fast memory cards are something i'm always on the lookout for. because of this, i've sampled a lot of different brands in the past (i'm always testing different brands to try and find cheaper alternatives for my camera) and have found that SanDisk flash memory cards are consistently much faster than their rated spec. this result with the 32GB microSD is probably no different nor that unusual, based on my previous experience.
if i have some free time this morning and will do some read/write tests of the SanDisk 32GB Class 2 card alongside the original Samsung 2GB card that the Vibrant came with, a SanDisk 2GB Class 2 card, and a SanDisk 16GB Class 6 card i used in my HD2.

i really dont understand how anyone can manage to COMPLAIN about more data space, or that someone bothered to share a good deal they had found. either you people lead unhappy lives or you're lashing out because you're unable to afford one... because there's no logical explanation you can create to support an argument against a 32GB card except price.

the microSDHC spec allows for up to 32GB. it's just taken this long (released in the beginning of this year, or so) for a company to create a chip dense enough to reliably manufacture a 32GB microSD card.
the new spec, microSDXC, will cover sizes ranging from 32GB up to 2TB in the Secure Digital format. 64GB SDXC cards are already available from Panasonic and SanDisk.

[Q] How are you getting by on space with the 16 GB model?

I generally buy tablets with at least 32 gb. I bought the iPad Air with 64 because I learned my lesson with the iPad 2 and filling it up.
When I went to Best Buy to pick up a Note 10.1 2014, they only had the 16 gb model. I could have waited, or picked it up somewhere else, but I wanted to take advantage of Best Buy's financing (18 months no interest) and I hate waiting for things.
After installing all of my apps and downloading the data for them, I have about 6 gb left. The problem is, I read a lot of comics. A typical comic in the Comixology app will run you about 100 mb or so. I delete many of them when I have read them, but I fall behind on my reading fairly regularly and accumulate quite a few. I also have a lot of articles in Pocket that I'm behind on and that takes about 600 mb.
Apps to SD is a myth on Samsung devices. I have confirmed that when you move an app to SD, it just moves it to a folder called "emulated" and really doesn't free up any space. Add to that that Pocket's "store cache on SD" feature isn't working and Comixology won't store comics on the external SD and I can basically only use the SD card slot for movies and music. So, I'm wodering: Will 16 (9) GB be enough? Or do I need to take this thing back and get the 32 gb model?
My real question is: How are those of you with the 16 gb model getting by? Is your internal space filled up? Are you wishing you had the bigger model?

Ive had other tabs that were 16g and as long as I was mindful of where I stored my books and photos I never ran inyo problems. I also make sure my email only syncs 5 days. With my work and personal accounts I get way to many. For reading I use Moonreader because unlike aldiko it doesn't force me to put my books on the device. Hope this helped

There's also the issue that, if we fill it up completely, it will hurt performance. So we really only have about 6-7 total out of the box.
I'm taking it back and getting the 32GB model. I love the tablet, but I need internal space.

You can use Folder Mount to move programs to the SD Card too.

Same here thinking of selling my 16gb and get a 32gb. Games alone fills up storage fast. Having an sd car doesnt help either

If I root, I have more options, but I'm reluctant to do that if I don't have to... Anyone else have a similar conundrum?

Not sure if this is an option for you, but I bought the 32 gb model from Newegg with my preferred account. 12 months no payment or interest. And no sales tax unless you live in CA. Taking the 16 back to Best Buy. Better too much space than not enough.

So you have the 16 GB and over 11 GB free? That I can live with, and it's about what I would have expected from the OS and bloatware... I can't decide if I want to try fot the 32 or just deal with the 15 (I'm not going to game with it, and movies/media I'd run off the SD card no matter what)...

you'e kind of answered it yourself tbh...Gaming will take up the majority of the space of a tablet. Applications are normally around 20mb to a max of 100mb and some rare ones larger. Games on the other hand well the high graphic games anyways are over a 1GB so space would be an issue if you were to play loads of games.
honestly if you have no intentions of gaming 16GB would be plenty for you although if you could afford the 32GB then go for it since its always nice to have loads of space.
Ofcourse only you can really decide but I'm holiding out for a 32GB because I would like to have atleast a handful of 1GB games to keep me busy when I'm at the airport waiting for my flight or on the flight itself.

If it's from ebay, my bet would be its a knockoff for that price. Post up some read write speeds, if there legit I'll be 3 for that price!

What are you ready to bet ?
Tell me how to do the write/read speed test and I'll post it. But for how it works for me, it is not a defective unit nor a copy. Files transfer operates flawlessly, recording videos and taking pictures works like a charm. Mounting a 1go iso file in ppsspp is instant loading, no delay or lag.
I got it from Ebay France (usually run through fr, UK and DE) by auction. Brand new and sealed. That's why I was saying that I don't know if Amazon was making a good deal or not.
To let you imagine, I paid 100 euros for an Optoma Hd700 worth +-700€ back then, and whenever I search something I get my hands on bargains almost every time. Getting a Micro SDXC UHS class 10 for 15$ is like daily route

I use ebay all the time but for easily replica table things I stay away. I bought my canon t4i an tons of other goodies on there
The problem with knockoff sd cards is they work but not at high functioning speeds. I run my micro sd's in my go pro all the time, the fakes can't handle the speed an they cut out at higher resolutions and frame rates. Same goes with the dslr, I can't shoot high speed shots consistently. That's why genuinely are important :laugh:
Download sd tools on the App Store, that should tell you.

Damn I'm so red right now, my R/W speed is stuck at 20Mo/s max, you're right I got a fake luckily I didn't pay more for this, I would be mad! I just checked and it says Taiwan, I will contact the seller to tell him what I think.
Gotta search another one now, a true one! I want my 70/40 R/W speed!

I got for less on the sale yesterday but still worth it, even at that price. It all depends on what you use it for. Like I said, I need cards that read fast. If you just using it to store data then write speed isn't that big of deal unless it's under 15 a second (hd playback will have a tough time).

For someone that has no Plan for storing Musics and Movies, Is the 16GB enough for Apps & Games? This would be my first Tablet & I'm not sure if I should fort out $100 more for the 32GB version. My local shop sells the 16GB version for $150.

1. Buy a refurbished model for less than $200.
2. I always prefer more storage to less. Lots of people can get by with just 16GB, I can't. If you find that 16GB isn't enough, there's always the Meenova or Leef microUSB card readers or the dual USB sd cards.

I have a 16gb and I am not pressed for space. I would prefer a 32gb, but if you aren't storing large files you'll be fine.
Also, I would recommend checking out your local Staples. They have the 16gb for $98 and 32gb for $128 on clearance. The price doesn't show up until check out which is why not many people know of it.

No music and movies, a 16gb should be fine, whereas you should take into account the space requirements of certain games as they might need a few GB in additional storage for files downloaded (e.g. Racing, shooters etc.). I got personally a 32GB Nexus 7 2013 and store music on it, no movies, a few games (6-7, 1-3 high storage require) and my space is more than enough.

No it isn't. Pony up for the 32gb.

I would say 16GB is "probably" fine for someone who isn't going to store music and movies (movies can take up spectacular amounts of space); I have had my N7 2013 since launch, only use it for a few apps and games and am yet to have any problems with storage space. That said, I am far from a heavy user and nobody can tell what the future may hold in needs and desires from the tablet....
As a rule, I would suggest going for the 32GB model if you can (notwithstanding the reported "its only got 16GB after the update" issue that some have reported) but unless it really is an "unmissable" bargain then there is nothing essentially wrong with the 16GB model.
My answer is probably clear as mud and won't make anything clearer, but meh, we all have our opinion as to what we would do - ultimately it is your decision

I have a 16GB phone (Moto X 2013) and a 32GB Nexus 7 2013. I've never had an issue with space on any of my devices. I didn't get the Nexus for the space, it was just the featured deal on Woot at the time, and happened to be 32GB.
I don't store movies or music on it, I use Pandora and Netflix. I do take photos with my phone, but don't save most of them on the device. They get uploaded to Copy and I usually clear them out just to minimize the clutter. If you record video or take lots of photos on a vacation or something, the space could be eaten up pretty quickly.
But for apps, you're probably fine. The biggest app I have is The Simpsons: Tapped Out, which is just over 1GB with all the updates that it downloads in app. Apps that are content rich can be pretty large. My GF just installed the Assassin's Creed Unity companion app, and it's like 450MB or something. I don't think this is typical for size, most apps I see are <50MB, even for games.
Just my opinion, but I think 16GB is probably fine.

No way, where did you get this info from. I try looking online, adding to cart & Pick-up at store but got no luck. The They are selling the old model of 32GB for around $150 thou. Do I call the local store or something

I would go with the 32GB if you plan on gaming. 2-3GB per game adds up fast.

bummer, called all stores within 20miles, no Luck. oh well :crying:

If u intend to install many large games, have a lot of pictures and or videos , get the 32gb. If u don't, then get the 16gb for games and add more temporary space with a USB OTG flash drive or memory card reader when necessary. I regret not buying the 32gb version.

Went from a 32gb grouper to a 16gb flo with little adjustment needed overall, except better management for comics and videos if traveling. Even then, nothing loading a USB drive up with and using OTG couldn't fix

Question, with those USB OTG, Do I have to Copy the file into the internal memory in order to read the file? for instance I have a Movie stored on the USB OTG, Instead of coping it to the Internal drive, Can I just play it off of the Drive on the Tablet? like how a Computer is... You can just play files off of the USB drive.

Of course you can direct play, otherwise what's the point (playing an mkv off thumb drive right now)
OTG cable is pretty great for controllers too

I personally think it is enough, if only because my collection of media is higher than a 32gb or 64gb model would hold anyways. I would rather hook up OTG storage for long trips without wifi. With wifi, I'll just stream everything anyways so it's not a big deal. Plus OTG storage options are generally cheaper than the upgraded storage option on the device itself would be and I can use it on more devices. Just my 2 cents.

I would also support buying 32GB. I had a 2013 16GB which I finally sold. I travel a fair bit on long flights (>6 hours) and like to have my ebooks and music on the device. The lollipop update reduced the available memory more than kitkat. I had to try my luck in multiple ebay auctions for the 2013 32GB as there seems to a real demand out there. I ended up paying about $20-30 more than what the going price back in December.

I always opt for more storage when possible. Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it in my opinion.

I have a 16 GB and personally I wish I would have gone with the 32gb model 16gb is just not enough especially if your rooted with a custom recovery and like to keep several backups
Go with the 32gb model definitely worth the few extra bucks
