Moving data partition to SD card? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I found this file:
http://dinc.does-it.net/EXT4_Mods/Mount_Cache_And_Data_To_Sd_Partitions.zip
It seems like maybe it will move my data to the SD card to free up some space on internal storage. Anyone know if I'm correct about this?

What's low on space? /data/data or /emmc? In either case it won't do what you're hoping. Its only purpose is to allow you to boot a ROM when mmc storage gets corrupted. It doesn't free space anywhere. Also, I think this is a cmlusco mod.

Fair enough.
I'm actually not low on space really but I've got all my apps installed to the emmc, which I have mounted as the SD card and I think a lot of the data for the apps may still be in the internal storage. I was hoping to swap it so the apps are installed on internal storage, like they usually are, but they read their data from emmc.
I'm not sure if that's possible but I figured I'd ask. Hopefully I was correct in my terminology; I don't really know a whole lot about android's file system.

when you use apps2sd+, /data/app/ and the dalvik cache' is moved to the ext partition on your sd card, although /data/data/ stays on the device for performance reasons, when you install an app, sometimes it will save info to /data/data/ thats where your space is going, some apps use more space in /data/data than others, some use no space at all

[Q] Disable "Internal Storage/Memory" and use only SD-Card?

Short version: How can I disable internal memory? Or are Android devices required to have a certain amount of internal storage?
Long version: I am looking to disable the 11.5gb of internal storage/memory that the Epic 4G comes with. I want all apps to be forced to write thier data to the sd-card. Some apps chose to write to the sd-card while others write to the internal storage. Id like to be able to make backups from 1 location instead of 2 different ones.
When I was flashing over to CM9 I thought I would create a backup of the internal store just in case. Lucky I did, because it was formatted after I booted into CM9. Also, some camera apps store pictures in one location, while others store in the other. Everything is just scattered. Blah...
Blah...

Found this by mistake.... Copy paste your partition information to sdcard. Vwaalaa.. It writes zeros to the entire thing. (or at least 6.5gB)
So its " /dev/block/platform/dw_mmc/ (id do "by name")
Copy all and paste to sdcard. Have a kernel On hand, you may need to reflash one.

can u elaborate on this a little? will he still have 2 storage locations with one just being half the size? im a little confused but have been wondering about the same idea/issue.

I dont know exactly... I actually have a thread posted right now about this...
It just.... Filled my internal sd..
I deleted a rom from my storage and then I had 500mB free space...
It acts like a monster... 3900 quandrant on full stock... Still bloated, no sysctl...
Beautiful.
But i was still a little worried since nobody answered.... So I reparted
7 gigs it filled for me
Thanks for that info, but I don't believe that will help me. The apps would then complain that I need to free up some space or that I don't have enough available .
I need some way to totally un-mount it from the system I believe.
I have not tried doing this yet, but I want to change the default DL locations to go to ext sd instead of internal.
Can we change the default save location for pics/vids/music etc... to go to the extsd?
I don't mind so much the app data going to internalsd as long as the larger files can be save to the externalsd I would be happy.

[Q] Internal storage

Hi all,
My previous phone was a HTC Buzz (Wildfire). It doesn't have any internal storage, just a pre-installed sd-card.
I got my One V now for 4 weeks, and I just found out it does have internal storage beside the sd-card slot. But what exactly is it?
In Settings --> Storage space it says it got 1 GB of internal storage, of which is 555 MB used by apps. What partition is it they are talking about? In ES File Explorer, I see /mnt/emmc. It is completely empty. Or are they referring to the /data partition (which I, as user, can't really use directly)?
If I want to transfer my own files (music and so on) to the internal storage, in what folder do I need to place it?
Currently a lot of apps are using my sd-card as storage for their settings and caches. Will they use the internal storage for that if I take out my sd-card?
Thank you in advance
Your wildfire could install what....20-40 apps before getting a low storage warning?
Install an SD card, all your apps go to internal, (except app data...ie games) and your SD card is your "user storage".
Unless you install over 200 apps, most of them large, you will never get a low storage warning on the One V and that is a good thing.
When you want to upgrade to a new SD card, just copy the contents over to your new one, install and go........that simple.

Thank you for answering anyway, but my question was about the internal user storage

Ahhh, you mean that 95 or so mb of user storage?
1. No, you cannot move apps there
2. Really, not alot of place for music, some photos sure, just select internal storage in the camera app.
The 95 mb or so HTC left us is basically a joke, if youx have a suitable sd card (16gb ones are twenty bucks or less) I really sugest using that and consider that small space as a buffer if your card is removed and you want to suddenly snap a photo......or whatever.
In the future, when we have s-off and can repartion the nand that tiny space will be irrelevant.

I don't know how much it is. I think it's the /mnt/emmc partition. I thought it was 1 GB.

No problems man, I'll start at the beginning.
Go to settings > storage, you will see:
Internal storage, total space 0.94GB...........it will report apps, and available. The two together should add up.
This is where your apps go
Phone storage, total space 95.23MB.........then available (mine is 95.21MB!!!!)
Storage Card, same total space / available.....this depends on what card you have
This is where app data goes, "user storage" ie. photos, videos, music, email attachments, downloads, etc. It will default to using your SD card if installed. If there is no SD card, or you temporally remove it, it will save stuff to your phone storage.
What partition is it they are talking about? In ES File Explorer, I see /mnt/emmc. It is completely empty. Or are they referring to the /data partition (which I, as user, can't really use directly)?

The "partions" are as listed above. There are some directories that you may not be able to view because you may not have "root access". If you root your phone, you will now have access to view and edit the entire file system (kinda like being an admin on a windows machine). Unless you are an advanced user, this is not really required. Some system files are hidden by default for good reason, change them or move them (or delete them like my Dad on his home computer**#@!) and you can really mess things up in a way you do not realize until later.

Like I said before, the "internal storage" is for apps only, your "user storage" on your phone is only 95.23MB. Not enough for music really, maybe some photos (In the camera app itself under camera setting > storage > you can select storage card or phone storage) but....you are limited to the 95.23MB of space.
Currently a lot of apps are using my sd-card as storage for their settings and caches. Will they use the internal storage for that if I take out my sd-card?

Yes, but they obviously will not be able to access any data on the card that is no longer in your phone!!!
It is easy to upgrade your SD card from the one that came with the phone. hook a USB cable to your phone, select "disk drive" from the drop down menu, copy the contents all at once onto the new SD card (if hooked upto your computer as well), power down the phone, swap cards and reboot......boom....more storage!!!
I hope that answered your questions, if not we'll have to talk S-off, hboots, nand partioning etc!!!!
Regards.
Thank you for the clear explanation!
I'm running Lloir's CM10 build now. So I have root
If I understand correctly, the 1 GB internal storage is the /data/ partition? And /mnt/emmc is just 95 MB of useless storage? Weird that CWM has got an option to make a Nandroid backup to the internal storage then. Won't fit
I've got a 4 GB SD-card btw

Yup, you've got it right.
The CWM probably has that option for other devices. The HTC desire, by default (similiar to the wildfire), 512MB nand, approx 105MB for the user (apps, user data, everything!). With s-off, we had scripts in which the ext3 partion of the sd card would be read as part of the "internal" storage, so not all was lost.
But, back on topic, yes just nandroid to your sd card.
Cheers man, glad to hear your enjoying your phone.

[Q] Connecting USB

I have a weird problem, when i connect the usb cable and go to mass storage mode, only my external sd card is showing up on the computer, and the internal one shows up but is not accesible. Does it have to do with the FolderMount program because i have mounted the Asphalt 7 game to play from the external card, and right before i downloaded the program and copied the game from the internal to external, it worked. Any help would be appreciated.

Probably thet´s the reason. Therefore it´s better to swap the sdcards and use the external as internal to install games.
Well theres more to it than just mounting. I installed SwapIt Extender which is supposed to partition the internal OR the external memory so that you can gain additional RAM. I did the swap on my internal memory and now the internal memory cannot be accessed on my pc.

So well, try to undo this. As I said it´s better to swap the sdcards and if you want to gain more Ram, you can partion your sdcard and create a ramdisk. But better do this via command line and beware of tools like Swapper2. Swapper2 can brick your phone, so stay away from this. Better do a search on how to swap SDcards and on how to create a ramdisk.
This way you will avoid such side effects caused by such tools.
Thanks, i'm just going to flash a rom again and i think that will solve the problem.

Reg Increasing the partition size in android phones.

Hi,
Can you please help me in increasing the app partition size in HTC One VX. or share a generic procedure to increase / alter partition sizes. I don't know y HTC has part of the internal memory partitioned as sd card and just 1 GB for app space. If i use chrome, facebook, contacts the data fills up the app space. Am really enjoying the features of your ROM. But app space limitation frustrates me. Can you please help me out here ? I am pretty sure many people are in my situation.
Thanks,
Vasanth Ram.
Hey.
On my old HTC phone I would use something like Link2SD. I'm not sure if it'll still work (coz I've not found the reason for it yet), but you can still try. Do check it out.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Link2SD works with external SD cards right ? I am just trying to use the internal space 8GB that is partitioned into so many partitions and getting wasted. [just 1 GB for Apps]. My idea is to unify all the partitions and have mount points for data cache etc in different directories.

You can't do that unless you make modifications to the kernel *I think*. And it's better if you don't. Link2SD works just as well as an internal partition. You won't notice most of the differences.
