[Q] Q(s) does cwm 3.0.0.5 restore/backup sd-ext

Hi,
I searched various forums but cant find an answer to this.
Does cwm 3.0.0.5 backup and produce an sd-ext.img?
I recently got a replacement sd card, so I did a nandroid backup after I flashed cwm 3.0.0.5.
I copied this to my laptop, and g parted my new sd to have 2 partitions fat 32 first and the last 2 gb as ext3, as per the requirement for modaco no sense kitchen rom (a2sd+ version).
New sd in desire, I copied the whole clockworkmod folder onto the new fat32 partition.
Wiped everything I could using recovery (clockworkmod folder still remains present).
Tried to restore but got a message at the end that "sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext. Restore complete."
When I boot the desire gets past initial alpharev s-off replacement image I have (I have s-off), then presents a blank screen. This does eventually boot. However all apps are not installed. I assume that the original dalvik cache was not transferred and was reconstructed by the restore with what it had.
Is this a known problem with 3.0.0.5?
Is there another version I can flash which doesnt have this problem?
Just to provide all possible info require (I think). My desire is PVT4.

I used CWM 2.5.0.7 from the alpharev release.
In my backup folder, I have sd-ext.img present.
I created this sd-ext with CWM itself. (I did a backup of the sd and formatted it)
So no doubt that CWM 3.0.0.5 did the same.
First, check if you actually have the sd-ext.img file.
Second, you might want to try to update to CWM 3, since the alpharev release is 2.5.1.8.

Well CWM will create the sd-ext.img backup if it detects that the partition is there. If out doesn't detect it then it will skip it like it did. There is nothing wrong with cwm at all and out works. You could upgrade your recovery to 3.2.0.1 but it won't make a difference really. Only way around it is to use titanium backup as it will restore straight to sd-ext

Hi,
I used gparted to firstly create a fat 32 partition then secondly a ext3 partition (for apps) on a new sd card. I cant see a sd-ext.img file in the nandroid backup file produced by cwm 3.0.0.5 so I assume that it cannot detect the ext3 partition.
Do you have any idea as to why this is? Can I have done anything to help cwm "see" the partition.
I'll update to 3.2.0.1 to try if the same problem occurs in that release.
I take your point that I could use titanium backup to achieve the same. I dont really want to do this as as I find it a pain to re-install the large number of apps I like to carry about on my desire. The problem is that I know what runs well on a ext-3 partition and what only runs on int or system space. I only allow apps into system or int if I really them to be there so this means thatyou have to manually install each one of them to the relevant space. Also I use ext3 for dalvik cache (seems to improve performance).
I cant see a reason why 3.0.0.5 didnt see the ext3 partition and ideally I would like a nandroid recovery solution that could auto detect all partitions if present (as I guess many others would).
I'll update this thread when I have run through the update to 3.2.0.1 and done some more testing.

I think CWM doesn't backup ext-partition if there's no data

try the old CWM.. the one comes while you root with unrevoked3 .. coz I have old CWM and it does backup sd-ext.

[U8650] ClockworkMOD v5.0.2.7 for Huawei

- Unrar "Huawei U8650.rar ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7."
2 - Turn off your cell phone battery 5sec, so put in again and enter fastboot mode: (VOL- and POWER simultaneously for 25sec)
3 - Connect mobile phone to the PC.
4 - Execute: "ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7 (Bootloader-Volum DOWN + POWER)"
5 - Run "reboot" (even DO NOT take the cable)
6 - You are now in ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7
(if windows do not find the drivers, look them in the folder "Drivers for Huawei U8650")

CWM 5.0.2.7 ignoring ext partition?
Hi everybody. I have installed CWM v5.0.2.7 on my SONIC U8650 smartphone. I'm having a slight problem with this recovery (same occurred with previous version 4.0.1.4). It's not saving the ext partition that I have on the sd card. When I perform a backup through CWM, it skips the saving of sdext as this partition is not being found. Also, with previous CWM version 4.0.1.4, there was an option to manually mount the partition (just in case it is not found at the time of backup) in the "Mounts and storage" option. This option is no longer present in CWM 5.0.2.7 so I can't manually mount the partition (whether this would let CWM recognize the partition and make a proper backup of it). In the end I'm not able to have sdext fully backed up (I resorted at doing a manual backup on my notebook with LINUX with partimage) along with all the other partitions such as /system, /data, /cache etc etc. I therefore wonder if this is a bug and if there's a way to get around this.
I have another smartphone with CWM v5.0.2.3 installed and on this one the backup of the sd-ext partition does work (and it is ext4, not ext3). I wonder if on this 5.0.2.7 version for SONIC, ext3 partitions would be recognized or not.
P.S.: The CWM 5.0.2.7 I installed was taken from here. And this is the installation guide. Is this the same CWM as the one posted here?
EDIT: I have flashed even this version posted here and still the same problem.... it desn't backup my sd-ext partition. It does backup boot_image, recovery_image, system, data, android_secure, cache but not sd-ext (no sd-ext found).

If you wanna sd-ext on your sd card you must follow (exactly) this easy steps.
1- Full format in FAT32 your SD card with Mini Partition 7 (windows) or gparted (linux); per example: Primary FAT32
2- put your sd card into your phone and get into recovery menu.
---go to "mounts and storage" and format this parts:
---/boot
---/cache
---/data
---/sdcard
---/system
3- Go to the beggining of recovery menu and select:
..."wipe data/factory reset"...(say YES)
..."wipe cache partition"...(say YES)
Go to ...advanced ..."wipe Dalvik Cache"...(say YES)
...go back...
5- Go to...advanced...partition SD card (say 512Mb to ext and64Mb to swap)
...go back...
...go to...mounts & storage... mount USB storage...
... conect the phone via USB and pass your favourite ROM to the cellular
6- select "unmount"
7- Go to "Go Back"
8- Select "install zip from sdcard"... "chose zip from sdcard" and select your ROM
10- Say YES and wait untill your ROm is installed
Congratz, now you have your U8650 with custom ROM and ext partition with swap

Please help! Huawei u8652 (At&t Fusion)
Am stuck here with an At&t fusion which a friend purchased a not long ago. He set it up with a lock pattern but unfortunately his colleague took it up and tried more than 5times. Now the phone is asking for the gmail account used to set it up. Which he did not change when he got it. I would like you to give a step by step guide to get the cwm on it in other to flash it with custom rom. The menu can't be accessed so I thought your method would be the best.

Sorry for the late reply and many thanks for the tip. I have been using the SONIC so far without the need to restore the system which works fine, so it was not urgent and therefore I kept it as it was, never tried again to overcome the problem. Only a question: does this procedure (different from the one I used) let the system correctly generate the backup of /sdext partition in CWM? Because I don't see why it would work with this procedure and not with my current sdext partition, which I created using gparted on a linux notebook.

S2E and Galaxy ICS CM9 procedure

Hi Guys,
this is my first post.
I managed to get S2E working with the latest CM9.
The key problem seems to be related with the ext4.
So, let's distinguish two cases:
1) Data wiped. In this case it should be enough to create an ext2 partition. You can refer to one of the many guides to do that. Then in recovery, just mount system and in the folder /system/etc/init.d and remove the file 90userinit. After this you can install S2E from the market or download and install it from the sdcard.
2) Already using S2E and not willing to wipe data.
Assuming you have the clockworkmod, go to recovery.
Backup your system.
Install the latest CM9 (galaxy-ics-latest).
Rename you sd-ext backup file (from sd-ext.ext4.tar to sd-ext.ext2.tar) in the folder just created inside /clockworkmod/backup, i did it mounting the usb in the usb and storage menu.
After this, you also have to open the nandroid.md5 file and do the same as prevoius point in the file. It shouldn't be required to generate a new signature.
Create an ext2 partition:
mkfs.ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
Restore the backup in the recovery menus: Advanced restore, restore sd-ext.
If everything went fine, just reboots and S2E should work.

I created the SDCard partitions using ClockWorkMod v5.0.2.0, now when I try to take a Nandroid backup,it works through all the partitions, until sd-ext and gives the following error :
"Could not mount sd-ext. sd-ext backup may not be supported on this device. Skipping backup of sd-ext" followed by the usual "Generating md5 sum..."

I have a 512 MB Ext .Phone recognizes the sd-ext without any problem. I have mounted and configured it using S2E.
WTH is going wrong ?Any ideas ?

S2E here, too - how did you partition the card - CWM? (I'd guess usually that shouldn't lead into problems...)
Did you also mount the partition manually in CWM? (I'm pretty sure that I didn't - but that's still an open question / if I have to / should) - what CWM version?

Yep,obviously,I used CWM 5.0.2.0 for the partition of the card.
I am using CWM 5.0.2.0 for the Nandroid backup and I have also tried via ROM manager to no avail.
SD-Ext is already mounted
Hbu?Have you achieved the Nandroid backup(including ext) without any problem ?What CWM did you use ?

I just don't understand why CWM can't back it up when it was created by itslef.
Does CWM 5.0.2.0 supports ext3/4 ?
I am pretty sure I created ext3 partiton using it and now when I mount my SD card via ADB,it shows the file system as ext2

Then surely it looks some issue with your SD-ext,I would recommend you to repartition using minitool partition wizard,For now you could use app extractor app to restore your apps/data from nandroid.

I know that the recovery have some problems creating / formatting partitions ext (eg creates ext4 but reformat in ext3 when you wipe), then I suggest GParted utility on the ubuntu live cd to partition the microsd.

BTW,I have already backed up my applications using TB and the app data should be in internal memory as it was not moved to ext.
I just want to have the recovery fixed to backup.
You can't just copy the whole SD card on the PC as it can't read the sdext# directory.
Most of the people recommend CWM for the partiton of the card and they didn't have any problem with that.Which recovery did you use ?

I prefer FASTBOOT

I had been using cwm 5.0.2.8 for a long time with no issues while backing up and restoring nandroid including sd-ext.
But due to mirroring bug in temporary 2.5.0.7 with 5.0.2.8,i downgraded to v5.0.2.0.
From then I started to have problems in restoring nandroids made previously with v5.0.2.8.I did everything again(partitioning,backup and restore) with 5.0.2.0,and it all started to work as before again.
So,I jumped to a conclusion that if you create sd-ext with specific cwm version then you should use the same version to backup or restore nandroids.
I know this sounds silly but proved to be good in my case.I might be wrong though.

my experience with cwm 5.0.2.8 I restore old backups made with 4.0.1.4 without any problems and found it very useful for advanced restore

Flashed recovery 5.0.2.8,now when i try to backup(nandroid) it goes like this :
Backing up boot image...

Nothing happens after that(waited for 30 mints) and when i try to reboot the device it gets stuck on htc logo for few mints and then boot into recovery.
Doh!Seriously,I am fed up with this ****.

I'm using 4.0.1.4 - by accident because of that wrong PC49IMG file in the index thread and I'm really too lazy to update.
Re. your problems: There are a few reports that CWM (all versions) sometimes fails with wiping/formatting (or does it a bit dirty) so I'd guess this very likely could also happen with partitioning (if I'm correct the partitions will be wiped and formatted also, then). I really would just repartition again - and afterwards I'd do a complete wipe/format of the sd-ext - just to make sure...
Keep in mind that a sdcard is not a hard drive...

Hello, first calm down, you have just installed a recovery
second probably the trouble (as you have already said) is the card, the formatting you? if you do not want to lose the data on your ext partition with gparted can copy them like a fat partition
even if given the situation I suggest you start from scratch. deep Formatting
partition with ubuntu live cd and flash the rom (I understand that will not boot up right? The ext partition is recognized as the first boot). There is a possibility that the micro sd does not work well anyway good luck I hope I can help you

P6 Bricked --- HELP

Hello.
My P6 shut down due to low battery an when I charged the battery my phone stuck at a boot loop.
I have TWRP recovery and I cant flash anything because of this error : E:Unable to mount '/data' .
I tried to flash stock recovery but always boot up to TWRP recovery.
Anyone can help?

As you have TWRP & are rooted, you created a nandroid backup using TWRP, didn't you? If yes, have you tried restoring the backup in TWRP?

Unfortunately, I didn't create a backup...
Also I can't copy anything to internal storage.

Ok, just realised the P6 has USB-OTG support & TWRP has an OTG option (please view the attached thumbnails).
So just get a flash drive & USB-OTG cable (usually very cheap on eBay/Amazon/similar). Copy the file to be flashed to the flash drive, connect the flash drive to the phone using the USB-OTG cable, then flash the file/rom via the Install > Select Storage > USB-OTG option in TWRP (short video tutorial here).
When your system is up & running again, I'd highly recommend taking a TWRP backup to external SDcard every now & again at least, then leaving 1 copy on the external SDcard & transferring 1 copy to a separate external device (PC/Laptop/removable media/similar). As it is a full nandroid backup, it is very easy to restore the full original system as long as you can get into TWRP recovery & the backup is good (so make sure not to 'Skip MD5 generation during backup' & also have 'Enable MD5 verification of backup files' selected in TWRP > Settings).

I tried to flash from usb-otg and there is no difference from installing from external sd card.
I have the same problem! E:Unable to mount '/data'

I think you should format data partition before flashing. Try it with twrp.
