Hello again XDA,
I picked up a friend's Galaxy SIII to root, and got to the place where you're supposed to transfer a solitary file to the SD card. However, when I try copying the file to either the phone or its SD card via a USB cable, it hangs for a minute here:

Then it fails out.
What the heck is this? It appears I can delete files (there was a renegade one) but that's all I really want to test, as this is not my phone.
I'm just thanking God there's a removable microSD card and I have a reader right now...

So the drivers are installed correctly? Meaning, the computer shows internal and external storage when connected. Have you tried copying a file such as a picture from the computer to the phone to see if it will transfer successfully?

Indeed the drivers are installed and working -- They were actually downloaded and installed from Samsung a few minutes before I noticed this problem. And indeed, I tried this on both internal and external storage with the very same result (it got stuck at the first image you see).
i would try a different cable, different usb port..make sure phone is in debug mode..reboot phone and pc and try again..those are the first things i would do if i was having that issue..also a workaround would be to take out the external card and insert it in the pc to transfer the file directly on it to bypass the phone for that process if you have to

So I'm having a bit of trouble with my phone (Epic 4g Touch running Recaulked Jelly Bean v1.5) recognizing my external SD card.
So earlier today, I dropped my phone from about waist height onto a hardwood floor. Everything seemed fine (my case did it's job, there was no damage whatsoever to the phone) until I opened the music app and realized all the music on my SD card had literally disappeared. Everything else was still there (backups, photos, etc.), but my music was just gone. So I unmounted my SD card, put it in a card reader, plugged that into my computer, and copied my music back onto the SD card. After that was done I put the SD card back into my phone, but my phone wouldn't even recognize that there was an SD card plugged in. So I copied my backups and photos onto my computer and formatted the card. After I formatted it, I put the SD card back into the phone and my phone recognized it was there. Since my phone recognized it again, I moved my files back onto the SD card. But, to my surprise, when I put the SD card back into my phone my phone wouldn't recognize it again!
I'm at a loss right now because all I have on my SD card are CWM backups and music files. My computer always recognizes the SD card when I plug it in, so the card is still good. I just got this replacement from Sprint less than a week ago because the power button on my old one quit working, and I'd really hate to have to send this one in too. If anyone has any suggestions or solutions that would be greatly appreciated.
Did you try just a reboot? That usually fixes it for me.

Have you tried formatting the card in the phone?
Do you have any backups you can restore to try also?

Yes, I have rebooted it about a dozen times or so but the problem is still there.
After letting my phone sit overnight, my phone seems to recognizes that my SD card is plugged in, but when I open up any file manager there are no files on my SD card. My phone says that there are 13 gigabytes of free space on the card, and windows says all the files are still there. But, when I try to unmounts my SD card from the Storage menu, Settings just freezes up.
I'm going to wipe my phone and reflash later today after school and see if that fixes the problem.
Formatting my external SD card from recovery cleared it up for me when I had a similar problem

Ive had my tab 3 sprint model since day one and never had any issues. I recently got the ota for 4.4.2 KitKat and now my SD card has mad issues.
I've always used a 64gb micro SD card without any issues.
Now, after updating, I'm unable to copy or move media (docs, music, pics, videos or anything else for that matter) to and from my SD card. It reads as app storage only and I'm able to send apps to SD via applications menu and thru titanium back up as well.
I'm fine with app only storage as I have a premium Dropbox account and unlimited data from T-Mobile.
The real problem is - anytime my tablet sleeps or the screen locks, my SD card vanishes. Its not mounted anymore nor did I get a toast saying its has Ben unmounted.
After taking out the SD and putting it back in, my tablet reads it and tells there is an unsupported filesystem! Then immediately asks me to reformat.
I'm constanlty reformatting with the built in formatter on the tablet and it still happens at least 9 to 10 times a day.
Very frustrating when your using an app that located on the SD card and it unmounts and all my data, even the app dissapears and has to be reinstalled.
I'm rooted running clockworkmod on the sprint factory 4.4.2 firmware.
Any help with this will be much appreciated, my class 10 Samsung 64gb is useless when in my tablet now.
Works perfect on my S4 and S5!!!!
Happened as soon as I locked the screen after creating this thread! Why the hell is this happening?!?!?!?

check his out. Fixes Sd card bug in kitkat
hey there xda peeps!
I know there are like a dozen of posts like this, but my problem seems to be slightly different from everyone else's.
when I insert the sd card into the phone, nothing happens, and the phone doesn't scan it. however, it seems to detect it, as I can still scan the sd card using sd insight.
when I go to settings>storage, the option to mount the sd card is available. however, when i click on it, a window pops up asking whether I would like to format the card or cancel the operation. if i click cancel, the window goes away, and I can click on the button once again. however, this causes the storage page to freeze, while displaying the notification"preparing external storage..." if i select format, it formats the card and...it goes back to square one, with it not being detected.
I have read other similar threads, all of which were resolved by pushing in the sd card slightly, formatting the cache from recovery mode and changing the card's storage system to fat32. I have tried all of them numerous times, but to no avail.
I am quite certain it is a software-based issue, as my other sd cards which I know to be readable could not be read as well.
my sd card is a sandisk ultra 32gb, while my phone is a zenfone 2 ze551ml. my phone's software version is in the attached picture.

Does the card work in another phone or on the PC? You might have a bung sd card which is not unheard of...
You could try another sd card in the phone, might be a warranty fixable problem (unless you have fooled around with it)...

yep, the sd card works in a pc. tried other sd cards, they don't read either. and I think my warranty just expired, but I left the phone completely stock.
What makes you think it's a software issue? If no card is working with just that phone, you could very well have a bad card slot.

it seems like a software issue to me due to the problem arising after a software update quite some time back. my phone was functioning all well for about a year or so before this problem popped up. sorry for the extremely late reply.
So I recently flashed the marshmallow resurrection remix ROM on my M8 and it was cool...been using it for some time now...no bugs whatsoever...until I decided to insert an SD card for the first time ever since the flash...as usual upon first insertion it tells you to format it into either internal storage or the other option (forgotten the main terms they used)..now I already know that there's an SD card bug on all CM powered Roms..but the way the error occurs on my device is abnormal...after I select how I want it to be formated and start the formatting process it immediately crashes in like 2 seconds and returns to my home screen leaving this error code

Most people with the SD card problems complain of the formatting process being stuck or moving forward to a certain level and then crushing or something...but non of them complains of this kind of error...can someone please look at this and help me?

I haven't seen that particular error. When I've had problems with CM13 reading the SD card, what sometimes works for me: insert the SD card into a card reader attached to my Windows PC. Then Windows pops up a dialog box, which indicates there is a problem with the card, and you can pick whether to fix it. I forget the choices, but there is a quick one, and a slower one. I pick the quick one, which just takes a couple minutes; and also preserves the data on the SD. Then re-insert SD into device, and CM13 seems to read it fine. This doesn't always work, but often does to fix the problem with CM13 reading the SD.
May or may not work in your situation, but just throwing it out there, as its worth a try.

But here's the thing...I placed that same SD card in another M8 using the ViperOme lollipop ROM and it seemed to format and most as internal memory or external storage just fine...so I'm sure it isn't a hardware problem

Removable storage is what you want. I'm pretty sure you'll run into problems if you try to format as internal storage (it becomes a part of the internal storage associated with the other M8) and swap the SD to another phone.
Why not try what I suggested, just to see if it works or not? It just takes a couple minutes, so it couldn't hurt. That is, unless you don't have a card reader connected to your PC.
Just tried your way...still giving me the same error...it crashes immediately when the formatting process starts...don't even think it even gets time to initiate the process..could it be that this particular ROM is bugged?

If you try another ROM, and don't get the problem; than its pretty likely a bug in the ROM. But on the other hand, if its a problem with the ROM, I would think that others would have reported it in the ROM thread.
Is your firmware up to date?
Sorry about the apostrophe abuse in the title.
The RUUs I find are all saying they are corrupted. Either the exe or the zip.
My guess is they are trying to kill off old m8 devices specifically which have so many bugs and problems it's unbelieberble.
Anyone know why cant even put the OP6BIMG.zip over to the phone without putting it in a folder?

They are not corrupted but encrypted.
You have no reason to extract the RUU unless you're making custom ROM and there are few special tools to encrypt them.
Normal zip/rar/7-zip can't properly read encrypted zip.

No idea what you're talking about. 0P6BIMG.zip must be on root of microSD (not in any folder or in internal storage) to install it thru hboot.
Thats what I wanna do. So the removable microSD?

Yeah unfortunately now I got a different problem.
I just did this, and now I am stuck in the bootloader screen cause it says I have too large image update fail and wont power up no matter what buttons I press.see it always did sdcard check.
Any thoughts?
Remove the sdcard.
Too large image = wrong software version zip = wrong firmware version
S-On = only can install a htc signed zip and bootloader is locked or relocked
Good luck, gotta go now
Yeah thats the best Idea I've heard in ten minutes or so.
