Hi all! I have a bit of time on my hands and seeing as my phone has been stupidly slow recently, I thought installing a custom rom would be a good idea.
I've read up on it a little (although probably still not enough) and have started by trying to root my Desire HD. I've been using the 'Easy Unlock Tool' to try and get it to s-off but every time I run it, I get stuck at "obtaining unlock token"
Where is it that I'm going wrong?
Easy Unlock Tool doesn't S-Off your phone or root your phone or flash a custom recovery. It merely unlocks your bootloader. Easy Ace Root Tool unlocks your bootloader, roots your phone, and flashes a custom recovery. But it also doesn't S-Off your phone.
Ah right, well it seems getting my device to be S-OFF isn't easy. Is it actually required to be able to install and run custom roms?
If so, what's the easiest way to do it? The only thing I've found is a guide for advanced users
Unlocking your bootloader also lets you flash custom ROMs.
Good news, I've managed to unlock my bootloader and root my device!
Now I'm just having trouble installing roms, every one I try seems to get stuck on the HTC screen on startup
You must flash the boot.img separately in fast boot, press power + vol down to get into hboot, and select Fastboot

done it, FINALLY!
Cheers, it took a while but I got there in the end!
Use this for S-OFF:

Josh...Did u happen to s off it as well? If not, u have to flash ROMs via fastboot. Install ROM on SD card, and using a PC,extract the boot.IMG and flash boot.IMG via fast boot

After using HTC tool to unlock bootloader, my device boots up and my bootloader is locked, Hboot at 1.02. I tried several times and it's now unlocked, but still S-ON. Then, I try to root it using dozens of methods. Finally, my rom is rooted now with super user inside app drawer. However, I can't flash cwm, or new Roms. My recovery shows system 3e, which always check signature of update.zip when flashing. It was 2e as I remembered.
Maybe I am the first one using the Espresso that face this, anyone has any idea about this. I've read through all the threads here, but no help...:-(
go to adb, then boot into fastboot and type "fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.1-espresso.img" or whatever cwm u download. then flash any rom and you are good to go. Make sure you paste that cwm.img in the correct folder for your adb. Let me know if it works.
Gonna try it and report soon sir.

Like you I used the HTC tool to unlock bootloader and was able to get it unlocked, but still S-ON. I have tried like 10 different ways to get root, but no success so far. How did you get root?

It does not matter if the screen shows S-ON. I do not remember how it was after I unlocked my bootloader...
First I tried to use the HTC super tool v3 to root my phone; that didn't work. I tried out the new "One Root for WFS" tool; all went well until I had to boot into recovery. I had already run into this problem once before when trying to flash CWM recovery. When I go to it, the screen just hangs at the HTC logo and I have to pull the battery to get out of it.
Why isn't this recovery working? Additionally, is there another way to obtain root without this recovery? (But I really just want a working recovery, to flash roms and make backups and whatnot.)

All I've done is unlock the bootloader through HTCdev. I assumed that was the same as s-off? The recovery seems to push through successfully, I've tried to flash it multiple times now.

Can i apply root using root.zip on stock recovery?
No you have to flash custom recovery to flash root.zip
If you are s-off or bootloader unlocked you can flash recovery via fastboot.
Later if you want to flash stock recovery, just extract it from any generic ruu and flash via fastboot.
was hoping that i can cause i tried almost all method here in installing custom recovery yet everyone of them gets stuck in black screen whith glowing button thanks for the help anyway

Have u tried flashing from Hboot ??
Sent from my HTC Wildfire S using Tapatalk 2
directly installing a custom recovery & rooting might be possible in most other phones, but u gotta unlock the bootloader on the WFS. U can either switch S-OFF or unlock the bootloader by going to the HTCDEV site & follow the steps there..
hope that helps

Hi. I have a Htc one x that was locked to Three. I got unlock code which worked now on Orange ( EE). I tried to unlock bootloader with no success. Do i have to do something because the phone was locked to Three. Please help as i want to root phone.
Gary.
In what way did it not work ? Assume you followed the HTCdev method.

I don't know if it resets the phone locked to 3 again when you unlock the bootloader, because unlocking the bootloader will reset the phone back to stock and i can't tell you if your carrier unlock code will still be active after this.
But what did you try to unlock the bootloader anyway ?

Thanks for the quick reply. I used the HTC Development method. Is there a way to root without the dev bit.
No, unlocking the bootloader must be done with the htcdev site.....did you get the unlock code.bin file ?
Mr hofs is right mate use htcdev site, plenty of guides knocking around on xda, I was locked to three but followed all the steps unlocked bootloader rooted, changed hboot and flashed a new Rom, daunting at first but so worth it you will see the difference.....good luck!

Another tip mate for the whole root thing use hasoon2000's all in one tool kit really easy if Ur not at ease with the whole adb thing cheers

I would learn adb/fasrboot....much easier to get out of trouble !
Example :
You use a toolkit to unlock and flash a custom recovery, for instance TWRP. Then you make your nandroid backup and running custom roms.....all no problem then you need to return to stock and need to flash the boot.emmc.win (the kernel/boot.img) but the toolkits only supports boot.img file .......
Get the problem there ?

Thats true buddy, I admittedly had to use fastboot when returning to stock for an OTA update a while back (it didn't like cwm) so returned to stock with stock recovery and then later flashed another rom etc....I stand corrected - IF u need to return to stock!

I used the toolkit originally but learnt commands now. You then understand what your actually doing to your phone and are less likely to brick it or at least have a better chance to fix it if it does go Pete tong.

Hey guys! So my cousin bought this used Desire HD. Its running 2.2 Froyo.
So here is the list of the problems:
1. When downloading from Google Play it does not download the app but it can browse. It gives a "Error : No Connection" in the status bar.
2. It should update to 2.3.3 but it says im already updated.
3. Tried factory resetting 2 times. Same thing.
4. Also one weird thing. I live here in Pakistan, so YouTube is blocked here. But the phone does browse YouTube? (it cant open the video though). Some kind of ROM problem i guess so.
What should i do to resurrect this problem? Thank you! Its the International version. "HTC Desire HD A9191".
Also the Serial number is SH11JRX08759

You could try unlocking the bootloader, root, and install a 4.2.2 custom rom. This will void the warranty but it may be the only way to fix the problem.
Update : so i went into the bootloader. And its pretty strange. Its S-OFF but not rooted :/ that is a really strange issue. Also i have noted the signals to be a bit more weaker.. Can somebody guide me from here?

Power off the phone. When it is off, hold down the volume down button and press the power button. This should get you into the HBoot screen. At the top of the screen, it will either say "UNLOCKED" or "LOCKED". If it is unlocked that's great. If it's not unlocked, look at the HBoot line to make sure the HBoot version on your phone can be unlocked. If it can, just follow the guide posted in this forum to install a 4ext custom recovery to flash custom roms.

root it with z4root, and use the one click eng s-off.I also had a phone brought in the other day, same thing. You must root it with z4root.

download that , run it, temporary root.Enable USB debugging, connect the cable
http://cloud.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/EasyS-OFF_05.zip
download that, extract the folder on your desktop or wherever possible, make sure you have ADB drivers installed, run desire hd easy s-off.exe,
and click s-off.It will flash the HBOOT and you're good to go.Make sure you disable fastboot afterwards.(settings>power)
Flash the latest radio found somewhere around here, it will help for GPS connection in newer ROMs.

You need the ENG S-OFF in order to use any actual commands/flash anything. Also rooting won't fix the play store problem, you must change ROM.If I may recommend, SVHD for a sense rom, or CM10.1 for that clean look.

Ok I am going to Temporary Root my DHD by Z4Root
Keep in touch kind sir I will update u the details
Unlock your bootloader first via htc dev. just follow the intructions in htcdev
Note: You need to update your bootloader first
- if the ruu in htcdev runs and update your bootloader, then your good to go
- if not or error appears, then create a goldcard (Instruction can be found somewhere here)
copy the updated hboot zip file to the root of your card and flash the zip file in recovery
then go back to unlocking your bootloader via htcdev
once unlock use the easyaceroottool to root your phone
-this will automatically flash the clockword recovery then you can flash any custom rom that you want.:fingers-crossed:

In the old thread that was here many people rebooted straight away with no problems, they had S-OFF.
Example:

just make sure you have a custom ROM ready to be flashed, do not boot the stock again once you reboot to bootloader.Flash 4EXT recovery, you can find the recovery .img here
just DL a ROM of your choice and flash it afterwards.
