So, a friend of mine thought that I should let him root my phone. Sadly I do not like it as much as I liked my original setup, so I'm trying to get my phone back to stock rom, but neither of us know what we're doing. We successfully got it to use a custom one, but we cant get it back to stock. Everytime we connect the phone to Odin the process goes:

We tried using multiple USB ports, and I have about three different .md5 files for the stock. I've restarted my computer, turned usb debugging off, then turned it on, both methods yielded the same type as above. I used the triangle away apk, too. Someone please help. I really dont know much about what I'm doing, and I just want my phone back to normal.
Uninstall kies and install the stand alone usb drivers linked in my sig. Reboot computer and try again.

Check in ad remove programs. Just because a shortcut on the desktop isn't present, doesn't mean the program isn't also.
If its not there though, try uninstalling the usb drivers, reboot and reinstall.
And are you in download mode when attempting to flash?

Yea. I'm in download mode. How would I uninstall and reinstall the drivers?

Plug in thr phone. Then open device manager on Windows. Find where its located right click on it and I think it'll let you uninstall that way.
Before you do this, look under the battery and make certain what model your phone is. If its not a T999, don't mess with the drivers yet and let me know.

I tried uninstalling the driver, and when I run the driver program, nothing happens. I unplugged my phone, and plugged it back in and it pops back up in the manager as normal. When I uninstalled it a second time, without running the driver program, and plugged it back in, the device showed up as well. Am I doing something wrong? Also, is it possible I'm using the wrong MD5 stock? Could that be a reason I always get a fail? I have two of them on my laptop that are said to be stock..
What file should I be looking for?

There is no official firmware for the T999L.
Call yourself extremely lucky as you almost hard bricked your phone!
Closest thing to official firmware is in my T999L thread in development section. I've also started one here in q&a. I highly suggest you read through both before going any further. Everthing you need is in those two threads.
I'm sorry, but you and your friend should be much more careful. You said neither of you knew what you were doing. I hope this helps convince you to seek out and read the information available for anything you want to do in this forum. He almost potentially cost you close to $600. (Or however much it costs now)
If after reading the threads I told you about you still have questions, or if something isn't clear, I will be happy to answer them for you.

Ok, I downloaded everything from the steps, and used the MB7 sysetem tar in odin. I got it to pass, but now when I turn my phone on, it gets to the galaxy sIII screen and then nothing. The screen cuts out. Is it supposed to do that, or do I continue adding the Kernal and everything else to it?
It can take several minutes when sitting at the pulsating Samsung screen. Are you sure you gave it enough time?
And what rom were you using before?

I think this is what he gave me:
CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.tar.md5
There's also a zip file on my desktop thats called Infamous_S3_Lite_06182013
As far as the recovery mode goes. I did so, and it does the same thing; Startup, Logo, then black screen. But I know the phone isnt off. I can see the backlight still on.

Ok, ypu may need to flash the kernel as well, but first do this.
Pull, then replace battery.
Boot to recovery. (Hold Home, Volume Up and Power buttons, release when blue text flashes at the top of the screen.)
This should take you into recovery. Now factory reset, reboot and wait for at least 6-7 min.
If this doesn't work, pull/replace battery, then reboot back to download mode, flash kernel, then recovery. Reboot.

Yup. Exactly the same.
Just get those two flashed, then try to boot up. If can't try again to boot recovery.

I just did a trade with someone and got his Epic 4G Touch. He mentioned the phone was rooted but I didn't catch what rom he had on there. The phone was working fine but had all of his information on it, so I did a factory reset so I can get all of my stuff on it. Once the phone rebooted, it shows the Samsung loadup screen with a yellow exclamation point at the bottom of the screen, then goes to a screen that says "Android" on it, then it seemingly turns off. I can't get the phone to load up at all, it just goes to that Android screen and goes black. Any ideas on how I can get this back up and running? Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
Hold power and vol down, then hit vol up and you should be in odin mode. Just flash a new kernel and rom with that using odin. There are plenty of en in the development section. I like stock rooted deodexed rom with LoSt kernel

Thanks for the response. I did that and it shows a screen that says "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!". I presume I have to flash the ROM from my home computer since I'm at work right now. Is that normal that you would have to reflash a rom after doing a factory reset? I did that on my Evo that was rooted and the ROM that was on the phone originally still loaded up like normal.
FYI: it has Zedomax v3 for the kernel. I think I will try out the stock setup you suggested once I get home.

When you have a custom rom you never want to do a factory restore as it is not a factory rom ..... Use odin to flash a stock rom or download one and put it on micro sd and use cwm to install ... Vol up and power

I didn't realize it would do that. Is it necessary to have a microSD card to install a new ROM? I'm not entirely sure. He doesn't remember what ROM he had, only the kernel (Zedomax v3) that he had installed. I tried doing the deodexed package first and nothing happened. When I went to the stock package it changed the boot screen to the Sprint version but just loops endlessly. Had I not done the factory reset I would've had more details but I haven't been able to load up anything since then.

Use the one-click method to get you back to EL29, since you're coming from an ICS ROM back to GB you should use the full rather than the no-data. One you've done that, then download and extract the autoroot tool and follow the prompts to get you to the unrooting. Make sure you have USB debugging turned on before using autoroot.

When you plug the phone in while in Odin mode, are you getting the yellow highlighted box with COMxx in it to indicate the computer is recognizing your phone?
Another possible path is to pop out your sdcard, put it into the computer and load up some files that can be flashed via recovery (if you have recovery installed) then reinsert the card, hold power and volume up button to boot into recovery and flash a new build that way.
I've been trying to use the one click option, my phone is recognized but it won't proceed to completetion, i guess it's bricked. Is there anything i can do?

Okay if it is recognizing your phone then try downloading another one-click and using it, or even re-downloading the same one you already have.
So even if my device is bricked it will load this, as long as odin recognizes it?
So I rooted my phone and installed cwm and forgot to do a backup so that's not an option. The ROM I downloaded won't install and gets aborted and the phone is stuck on galaxy s 3 screen. Get to download mode first pull battery then put it back again. Hold volume up(down not sure) home button and power button to get to bootloader mode. For the the Samsung stock I only get as far as "leave the cs" then when I wipe the data/cache and reboot I get that dreadful Samsung logo and it stays that way for hours.

Seems to me that the Binary Count is not the problem, but the file that you are trying to flash. Redownload it and try again.
What exactly is bricked about it? Boot loop, FCs, Errors?
Are you able to get into recovery mode?
A bit more info might help.

More info would definitely help. Starting with the model number and where you downloaded everything from.
And you are using an old Odin version. Use the latest.

Thanks guys n gals
It's an SGH-T999
I have tried every ODIN put out on the market they all end up with a failure to write
I have tried 2 computers, 2 cables all the different ports
I have wiped all the Kies off the two pcs
I have wiped the data/cache
I have even run cclean on both computers
I understand that I cannot use a jig on the Galaxy S3?
I have no idea if the binary counter has anything to do with the inability to write.
I have tried both custom rom and stock downloaded from Samsung, from this site and from another website
all .tar files have been okayed by ODIN but have failed to write.
I am at work so if it takes me a little to respond I apologize. I am going on day three without a phone and it's driving me nuts.

I'll try to answer as best as possible.
It is stuck on the Samsung Galaxy SIII logo when restarted or rebooted
I can get it to either Recovery and Download mode. There are no back up restore files in recovery mode to restore from obviously. Yes, I have tried to delete data/cache and dalvik cache as well. I have downloaded from this website for custom roms and from samsung for the stock firmware. I have tried another android development website for custom rom. all downloads have failed at the Odin write stage.
What is FCs?
Odin Error code: Failure to Write
I recently acquired an Epic 4G Touch that wouldn't boot into the stock ROM. I thought "Awesome! The ROM must be corrupted. I'll just Odin it back to stock and have a new SG2." Well, I tried Odining it back to stock. I tried the Gingerbread EL29 stock tar image and it hung on the Sbl.bin. I thought maybe my download was just corrupt but after trying 2 other GB odin images it still wouldn't flash. Then I tried flashing CWM recovery through odin and that hung at NAND Write Start. I've switched cables, USB slots and computers. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. I would really like to get this phone running so I can upgrade my SGS1.
Edit- Just to clarify, I never tried to flash anything through CWM. I tried flashing a kernel that had CWM through Odin.
I put the ROM into the PDA slot. Here's what happened in Odin:

Since you can still get into download mode, try this thread.

Thank you for the response. I cannot get into my recovery and my phone will not flash anything in Odin without some sort of error. I think it hosed. He mentioned sending it off for a jtag repair? What exactly is that?

This is very confusing... How are you trying to flash with CWM if you can't get into recovery mode?
What exactly is happening with the device when you try to power it on?
What happens when you try to go into download mode using Vol down+power?
What happens when you try to get to recovery using vol up+power?

Agreed.
Op - You're trying to write to the phone and, my guess is, you're making a bad situation worse since your getting partial writes. Especially that first screen where pit was mapped and partial flash took, such as boot.
Dont know where crawrj is, but try reaching out to Garwynn. He knows A LOT.

What? When did I say I was flashing through CWM? I've never even been able to boot to CWM. I said I was trying to flash CWM through download mode which failed. When I try to boot, it sticks at the Samsung Galaxy S2 kernel load screen. When I try to boot into recovery it sticks at the Samsung Galaxy S2 kernel load screen.

Sorry. I misread the OP.
Ok. Try this to get into Recovery
Press and hold the vol up+power button until the splash screen shows up
After the splash shows release the power button and then continue to hold the vol up button. It should take you right to recovery.

I've done this atleast 20 times (21 now after this post) and it just sticks at the Samsung Galaxy S2 screen. I'm sure I screwed it even further by trying to flash CWM recovery. When I first got it, it booted into the recovery screen but wouldn't actually fully load into recovery. I would just get the Android character but no text. These are the weirdest issues I've ever had with an Android device.

It fails every time it trys to flash files to the NAND memory. Does this mean the internal storage is screwed?

That is possible. You can try to call Sprint and tell them you/a friend was trying to update to ICS and rebooted and it wont boot fully. Act dumb and see if they will replace it. Since it won't boot to anything at all, there is really no way for them to tell. Just say that you bought it from said friend. It is worth a shot. I have done it before with AT&T when I screwed up a Captivate doing a hardware mod.
I just told them that I bought it online and tried to update it but after the update, it wouldn't power on. They let me replace it.

Either that or try J-Tag. But I don't know if that will fix it.

OK I will definetly try that, thanks. If they don't replace it, I will just sell it for parts and keep using my Epic 4G. Thanks for all of your help
Wait oh wait I have a few questions myself lol what odin are you using? Did you try any one clicks? Did you try removing the sd card and then odin? Did you try to leave battery out all night then try odin again with no sdcard?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I tried 2 different versions of Odin;1.x and 3.x. I used multiple one clicks. I pulled the sd card before flashing. I had to buy a battery for it when I got it and the previous owner had kept the battery out of it for at least a month. I really appreciate all answers but I really feel like I've tried everything :|

It is possible using a pit file would help. The pit file from when this phone came out would be best. Then run a gb rom in odin along with the pit. If you find the pit link it here before you use it. Wouldn't want more problems.

One Click restores are built with the proper pit of 9-16-11. But it sounds like he's already tried multiple builds.
Flashing each component isn't a bad suggestion but with using the pit, I wouldn't necessarily use just a rom, I'd use a tar since it would contain everything needed to restore the bootloader (boot, Sbl, param, recovery..)
Or try flashing an built bootloader to see if he could get back into recovery alone. There are a few already made in RWilco's Repo..
Can someone please help me. I recently tried flashing a ROM that used aroma. I followed OP install instructions and in the middle of selecting options in aroma, aroma froze. I battery pulled and now it when i try booting into recovery, all it does is show the Team Win logo (I'm on the latest TWRP) then the screen turns black and attempts to reboot the system. But there is no system so it gets stuck on the SAMSUNG GALAXY SIII screen.I was on CM10.1 and it is stuck on the boot image with the CM guy. Someone please help

When booting, there are three options: System (regular boot), Recovery, and Download.
If two aren't working, try the third. Using Download Mode and Odin, you can reflash the recovery. Just follow the Rooting Guide. Hope you gt it fixed.

In my opinion, Hard Bricking is when the phone doesn't respond at all. Most people even say that the charging light is the only thing that will turn on. Since OP was able to boot up and at least see the TWRP boot screen, it definitely wasn't a brick. Since he was getting something other than a blank screen, not all hope was lost.
Okay well Odin kept showing fail. I followed the intructions exactly, but it always showed fail. Any ideas?

Ah, sorry you're gonna have to get it off there, it interferes with ODIN :\
If all else fails, you can attempt to do a full wipe by using Odin to install a Stock TW Rom. I think there's a stickied guide around here somewhere with a fairly recent stock rom strictly for Odin. This will wipe everything on your phone but will leave your external SD untouched. Others have mentioned Kies, which I have never used so I have little that I can say about it.
Also, for future reference, there are two types of bricks: a soft brick and a hard brick. A hard brick is the one with a more concrete definition being that your phone/electronic device is just an expensive paperweight as the hardware/in-depth(wrong word but you get the meaning) software has been corrupted so much that the phone does nothing. This is most commonly seen with messed up boot managers due to the wrong rom being downloaded. A soft brick, on the other hand, is where a phone fails to operate but there is a chance for it to be recovered. This one is much more common and is what you are experiencing. It's off topic but yeah lol. Good luck with your phone.
