Ive been searching everywhere for this but either nobody has thorght about it or its not possible.
with my Touch HD the volume is far to loud to listen to music as background music or through earphones and the HTC volume control step size for the volumes is too big. its either off, medium, loud or very loud!
the default WM6.1 control is even worse!
i know that you can use your finger to adjust the HTC volume control but this still isnt sensitive enough for me.
and i also know that it is possible to adjust the volume through tweak HD or advanced config. only problem with that is that I want to be able to chose to listen to very quite music or turn it up very loud without having to go through one of those settings.
so i was wondering if anybody could make a program that either has a large step size or a user defined step size for the volume and that is activated/volume through the volume buttons.
Thanks!
P.S sorry if this is in the wrong section or if there is a requests thread but i couldnt find it.
Ok i havnt found exactly what i wanted but i did find this:
http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/Volume-Control-Download-35536.html
this is an aplication which lets you choose the volume with 100 steps. and it works from the system volume so using somthing like nitrogen or media player there is another 100 steps giving me 10000 steps haha
the bad points are that you must go into filemanager and manualy start it. and even then it does not work with the volume buttons.
(if anyone knows of a way to start this when powering on the device that could be useful!)
its good but not ideal.
if anyone else can come up with somthing better speak up!
create a shortcut to the exe and add it to /device/windows/startup ?
Yep, would be nice if the volume rocker can use this little tool.
Hello,
Any news on that topic ?
Thanks
I have the same problem, i think the stepsize can be changed in the registry but i dont know where i could find this.
Just to let you know the Volume rocker switch adjusts sound in 3 steps at a time. But during music play back you can use finger or stylus to adjust volume bargarph displayed on the htc HD screen in single step and thus volume is more finely controlled. There is no need to make registry changes.
The problem is, if youre using the E100 headset (or just want to press a button in your pocket to adjust volume) it would be nice if it'd adjust 1 step instead of 3 when pressing volup or voldown..
If youre moving and just want to adjust volume its really annoying to get your phone out of your jacket/pocket, pull out your stylus and lower your volume to 1..... might be just me that is a lazybones, but still!
With Good intra headset, even one bar is too much. Is it a WM limitation that the stepsize is that big ?

The actual problem is that 1 bar (out of the 15 available), ie the quietest setting the system is capable of, is TOO loud. I wouldn't dare use headsets at 10 bars (out of 15), the sound level would blow my eardrums out.
What we'd like to do is change the "range" of volume output - so that the output power is a LOT lower at low settings, while remaining loud enough for public broadcast (ie from the speaker on the back) at higher settings.
Anyone?
Same issue here. The minimum volume is still way too high. It's a waste of battery and could hurt your ear if you use in-ear earbuds.

As an addition.... I think this "too much volume" thing is something to do with the HTC TF3D music player itself.
On my (stock Rom) HD - I can listen to the FM radio at "normal" volume levels (ie about halfway up the range), but with the TF3D player - I have to turn it right down again.
Haven't tested it with other players (eg TCPMP).
Another request for a better solution to volume control.
bumpity
I have the same problem, ever since getting a set of in-ear MM50 (Sennheiser).
Too loud!
Any ideas?

You may edit the registry file:
Local_machine\software\HTC\VolumeOverlay\SavedHand SetVolume
Change DWORD to 0
(soft-reset not needed)
plug in the headphone and adjust the system volume (press the volume button on side of the device and adjust the volume that is most soothing through the headset and it will memorize it! Once you pull out the headset the volume through the system speaker will be amplified as set by step 2 below. Plugin the headset again and the vol. will revert back to the headset volume level that you adjusted above).
You can always increase or decrease headset volume using the volume switch from this point and this new level you used is memorized during next headset insertion and automatically adjusted.
Step2,
This will tweak the volume that you want when headset is not plugged in.
But remember this will be the maximum volume through the speaker and you can only decrease it using the device volume button, not increase it.
You may have to experiment a few times until you get to a satisfactory volume level (don't forget to soft-reset after tweaking each time. I found 40 to be quite reasonable.
Local_machine\software\HTC\AudioManger_eng\Config\ music_player_volumn
Change the DWORD to 10 (you may have to adjust it to suit the volume you want when the headset is unplugged. In fact 10 is too low and I found 40 to be more reasonable) or lower(I think even 10 is too low!) and soft-reset the device.
the music will become lighter in the TouchFLO3D music player
I did both of the above steps and it solved the problem dramatically! It works even if you are using other software players(windows media player etc)

None of these thins work with noise isolating headphones where 1 bar is too loud. As soon as the phone starts to ring you are deafened as the volum is A LOT LOUDER than the music. I have the same problem with WMP as I can set a low volume in system, 3 bars, and 15-40% in WMP or an other program and the music is fine but as soon as the phone rings it absolutely kills!
man if someone solves this they'll make a few insta-friends !
We need a fix.
Many this app will help some, if not all of you !
It's a freeware developed by a member of this forum and it serves the simple purpose of allowing to set "volume steps" and replacing the default volume window. It's brilliant.
Work is still in progress, but it's already a must have at this point
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=598997
I've seen multiple posts here and across the web regarding increasing the volume of the speakers, earpiece and headset volume. The problem is that those who have sensitive hearing often want the opposite and we are in the minority.
Being that the changes require using HEX instead of decimals, I made all the changes to the file and attached it here.
The file attached has all the volume headset levels at 50% their original. I was on a 1hr 35min call with my brother. After that call, I had no headaches, earaches, nothing. My bro was watching Yankees and clapping, yelling in his mic and I had no problems.
Enjoy!!
why wouldn't someone just use the volume buttons to lower their volume? I know that's what I do.
I mean, the plus side to being able to have the volume normal or above is when you are in a crowded place yourself you can hear what the other person is saying right? I just cant see the plus side to having the volume permanently at 50%. Mind you I can see it being a pain in the butt to constantly have to adjust the volume down. Actually now that I think about it when you are in a call and you adjust the volume doesn't it automatically remember the setting you had it at so when the next call you have comes in its the same? It probably resets its self if you restart the phone.
Regardless... for anyone who does want this you have likely just saved them a TON of tinkering so good work!

I understand where you are coming from but I did not lower the volume by 50% for ALL audio output on the device. The way the CSV file is setup, you can increase/decrease volume using hexadecimal values to different audio output ports (earpiece, headset/audiojack, hands-free bluetooth, and speaker). I did not modify the earpiece, hands-free, or speaker. I just decreased the connected headset audio. It seriously was giving me headaches because it was too loud and the volume dial at the lowest was still unbearably loud. I personally don't want to go deaf so I made the revision.
I may do some more tweaking and increase the earpiece and speaker volume as the earpiece is way too low and the speaker could be a little bit louder.
Life is about balance. Sure ice cream tastes great but if you had more than you could eat all the time, you would probably start to hate it.
this is exactly what i was searching for! i use in-ears and they are way to loud when doing a call. thank you!
Has anyone noticed that the volume is lower in Froyo than it was in Eclair?
I've tried a number of different apps (built in player, tunewiki etc.) and there seems to be a definite reduction in the volume since upgrading. Any ideas?
i was going to post a thread saying volume is much better!
earlier on 2.1 it was crap for me. now both in call volume and media volume are much better and in call volume is clearer. the rear speaker sounds less tinny and is passable now. the shrill hiss / tinny sound at max volume is gone now totally since froyo update i think atleast on the tracks i listed to (preinstalled music and soem youtube videos). i was infact thinking i might reduce the volume a bit which seems a bit of a shock to me knowing the crap rear speaker dished out with the desire. earlier i had said elsewhere that this was the worst speaker i had seen on a phone compared to any of my phones in the last decade, but now i retract that statement. looks like it was a software issue.
i had before the froyo update installed the free 'car mode' app that uses the rear speaker, i would use that mode when ever i put the phone in my trouser pocket as otherwise i would never hear the notifications and often the ring if i was out and about. then after fiddling around i found some sound settings which wasnt obvious at first and disabled the default tick box that made the ring volume and notification volume the same. after disabling that tick box then i could independently adjust the notification volume.
also before the froyo update i installed the free 'quick settings' app which under its settings has a setting for sound, under that apart from the usual volume controls, it has a separate control for system volume which i couldnt find elsewhere on the phone and after increasing that system volume to max, the volume output improved from the rear speakers.
but after froyo it is even better now, both for call volume from earpiece and rear speaker. i cant comment about the earphones as have never used them yet and still in its packet somewhere. wish there was a way to use the fm radio without needing the earphones.
Interesting..I'm specifically speaking of the headphone volume and the ringer volume. It's certainly lower (around 30% lower than 2.1).
I do agree the output from the inbuilt speaker is improved.
Upon further research, I have seen others mention similar issues and also relating to the quality of the sound. I've also seen custom roms using pershoot's audio mod which is supposed to increase loudness. Can this be applied to a stock 2.2 rom (rooted of course)?
Initially, my nexus's speaker volume and incall volume are both really low even at maximum settings. After browsing around xda, I found people recommending volume+ so I paid $1.62 and got the full version. Speaker volume is loud enough now, although I feel the quality is not very good. I don't use speaker to listen to music so it's not a big problem.
There's also in-call volume setting in volume+. I set it to 90 and strange things happens: When I use skype, in call volume is extremely high, I can almost treat it like I'm on speaker. It feels like the settings are working. However, for regular calls, the in-call volume stays the same, still too low for most cases. I can only hear people in quiet rooms. I barely hear anything on a street. Setting in-call volume to other numbers doesn't change the result. So my result is volume+ is only semi-functional. Any other fix for in call volume?
In call volume is the only api not exposed so it cant be increased. Btw everyone goes for volume+ but equalizer by smart apps is free and i much prefer over volume+.
Anybody has any other ideas? Low call volume is really annoying
Still nobody? Everyone‘s incall volume is loud enough?
Basically what the guy above just said:

Just did a test:
Removed in call settings
Speaker to +10
Called *611 (bell customer service) let the automated machine start talking..
Click volume down on rocker a few times then clicked volume up a few times and the sound increasef to am acceptable level.
However when i clicked up one to many times it almost mutes volume but the onscreen indicater is at max (found this odd).
Saw this on the thread you gave. I have the same situation. There exists a maximum in-call volume at around 3/4 of the bar. It's enough for regular use but still a bit low
low volume on calls
Still no one comes with a solution, the volume on the gnex is very low on call especially outside...thanks

I have the same problem using ZTE Blade... volume+ didn't work.
I think there solutions, many roms developer put on their changelog things like "in-call volume boosted" then I ask how you did that and no one anwers...
Anyway I did some research and I found on the rom i'm using a file named libaudio.so that says:
Setting in-call volume to %d (available range is 0 to 7)
Guess that for me increasing steps with volume+ only has efect until 7...
Maybe i'm being stupid... can someone with more experience analyse this?
Hi Nexus owners ,

I found the call quality (my side) pretty good - clearer than a UK landline and better than the Nexus 5. On the other side though, they stated it sounded like I was in a fish bowl. (was in the kitchen at the time with an extractor fan on so could have been any noise cancellation struggling)
Speakers are ok - bit louder than the old 5 but there's some distortion at full volume. Fine a level or 2 below full though

thanks for fast reply.
It worries me a little. You could make one more call from a normal environment and give me a feedback ?

If someone hasn't done it before this evening, I'll sort that for you (just hard to find someone to call during the day you can ask how you sound!!)
I'd say the speaker quality is pretty awful. Sounds like the speaker has blown and I'm in the process of arranging a replacement. I then tried this with a friends 5X which just arrived and it's the same. I'm hoping there's a bad batch.
I received my 5X yesterday. Tested yesterday and today and the call quality is very poor on mine and sounds really tinny. Anyone else experiencing this?
Yep I have the same issue. My replacement 5x should be here tomorrow!
People should also state what carrier they're on while they're at it.

Just spoken with Google support and they said I need to do this before they will think about sending out a replacement

If you are having any audio, speaker, or microphone issues with your device, please follow the steps below.
Step 1: Update to the latest version of Android OS.
Go to "Settings" > scroll down to "System" > touch About phone (or tablet) > touch System updates.
If your device is modified or rooted, revert your device to original factory image since troubleshooting steps may not work on modified/rooted devices. You can use our Nexus factory images to re-image your device.
Step 2: Remove obstructions.
Remove any cling film, stickers, covers/cases/bumpers, or anything else that can be obstructing the device.
Step 3: Enable safe mode on your device.
Ensure your device's screen is on, then press & hold the Power button.
Touch and hold the Power off option in the dialog box.
Touch OK in the following dialog to start safe mode.
To exit safe mode, turn your device off and on again.
If you discover that the issue doesn't occur while your device is in safe mode, it's likely that a third-party app or Android OS modification is causing the issue. You can start to use and narrow down your installed apps to try to pinpoint the specific app. When the culprit is identified, you can uninstall the app or contact the developer of the app for further support as follows:
Navigate to play.google.com.
Find the app and click on it to view its main page.
Scroll down to the "Additional Information" section. Here, you'll see "Contact Developer" options.
Step 4: While in safe mode, turn off Bluetooth.
Go to "Settings" > under "Wireless & Networks", touch Bluetooth.
In Bluetooth settings, if Bluetooth is on, touch the slider to switch Bluetooth off.
Step 5: While in safe mode, make sure the volume is on.
Go to "Settings" > under "Device", touch Sound > touch Volumes.
In Volume settings, slide all three indicators all the way to the right to make sure all sound is on and at max volume.
Note: When each slider is adjusted, a sound will be heard.
Step 6: Check if the issue is resolved.
Play with the volume levels to hear sound.
Make a test phone call.
Use Google Now to test your microphone.
If your issue isn't resolved, continue to the next step.
Step 7: Reset your device to factory settings.
If you're still unable to resolve the issue, or if the issue is so severe that you can't boot your device into safe mode, resetting your device to factory settings may help. Resetting your device to factory settings will erase all local data on your device. Backup of your personal local data (pictures, music and video files) is recommended.

If your issue has been resolved, great! Let us know.
If your issue was *not* resolved and your device still experiences audio issues, call us or reply to this email and reference that you already went through our Audio troubleshooting steps which included resetting your device to factory settings.
I've made 3 phone calls and was told I sound loud and clear, I also had no issues hearing the other party.
Speaker quality is similar to the Nexus 5 but does get 2 steps louder. It could be described as harsh and lacking bass, a typical mobile speaker.
Just got mine today, I have to say I am unimpressed by the call quality by far. I am coming from a S4 and the call quality here is tinny, kind of like a blow speaker with higher pitches (not shrieking but women voices), I have another coming soon (blue) and will hope that phone has better call quality. If not then this phone has a hardware problem whether it's intentional or not.
I haven't spent that much time talking on the phone yet but what I have done sounded good on my end. I didn't ask people on the other end how I sounded but if it was bad it wasn't bad enough where they couldn't understand me. The speaker, which I don't use all that much anyways, sounds about as good as I'd expect. It is a little louder and sounds a little better than the speaker on the Nexus 5. Having it on the front does make things a little bit easier to hear but since I don't use the speaker on the phone that much anyways I'd rather it was on the bottom or back so that the bottom bezel could be smaller to help with one handed use.
Hi,
i bought a used "like new" unit from amazon a few weeks ago. During the first calls i noticed a horrible call/speaker quality. Theres a high pitch noise everytime the caller speaks. It hurts my ears. I know it sounds stupid, but its a fact. Anyone has noticed a similar behaviour? I don't know whether the speaker is broken, or it's just poor hardware quality.

Try blowing air at the speakers. If that still doesn't work then return/exchange it. That's not normal. Only problem you should have with the speaker is low volume.

Very surprised to see messages about bad call quality. The call quality in my nexus 5x is excellent. Never heard any phone sound so real as if the calling person is in front of me. I rarely use the speaker phone though. I don't know how my voice sounds at the other end but never received any negative feedbacks on that front.
I just picked one up yesterday and so far the few calls I have made today have resulted in the other party saying I keep cutting out or they can't hear me speaking at all. Anyone else have this issue?
