Initially, my nexus's speaker volume and incall volume are both really low even at maximum settings. After browsing around xda, I found people recommending volume+ so I paid $1.62 and got the full version. Speaker volume is loud enough now, although I feel the quality is not very good. I don't use speaker to listen to music so it's not a big problem.
There's also in-call volume setting in volume+. I set it to 90 and strange things happens: When I use skype, in call volume is extremely high, I can almost treat it like I'm on speaker. It feels like the settings are working. However, for regular calls, the in-call volume stays the same, still too low for most cases. I can only hear people in quiet rooms. I barely hear anything on a street. Setting in-call volume to other numbers doesn't change the result. So my result is volume+ is only semi-functional. Any other fix for in call volume?
In call volume is the only api not exposed so it cant be increased. Btw everyone goes for volume+ but equalizer by smart apps is free and i much prefer over volume+.
Anybody has any other ideas? Low call volume is really annoying
Still nobody? Everyone‘s incall volume is loud enough?
Basically what the guy above just said:

Just did a test:
Removed in call settings
Speaker to +10
Called *611 (bell customer service) let the automated machine start talking..
Click volume down on rocker a few times then clicked volume up a few times and the sound increasef to am acceptable level.
However when i clicked up one to many times it almost mutes volume but the onscreen indicater is at max (found this odd).
Saw this on the thread you gave. I have the same situation. There exists a maximum in-call volume at around 3/4 of the bar. It's enough for regular use but still a bit low
low volume on calls
Still no one comes with a solution, the volume on the gnex is very low on call especially outside...thanks

I have the same problem using ZTE Blade... volume+ didn't work.
I think there solutions, many roms developer put on their changelog things like "in-call volume boosted" then I ask how you did that and no one anwers...
Anyway I did some research and I found on the rom i'm using a file named libaudio.so that says:
Setting in-call volume to %d (available range is 0 to 7)
Guess that for me increasing steps with volume+ only has efect until 7...
Maybe i'm being stupid... can someone with more experience analyse this?

I've seen multiple posts here and across the web regarding increasing the volume of the speakers, earpiece and headset volume. The problem is that those who have sensitive hearing often want the opposite and we are in the minority.
Being that the changes require using HEX instead of decimals, I made all the changes to the file and attached it here.
The file attached has all the volume headset levels at 50% their original. I was on a 1hr 35min call with my brother. After that call, I had no headaches, earaches, nothing. My bro was watching Yankees and clapping, yelling in his mic and I had no problems.
Enjoy!!
why wouldn't someone just use the volume buttons to lower their volume? I know that's what I do.
I mean, the plus side to being able to have the volume normal or above is when you are in a crowded place yourself you can hear what the other person is saying right? I just cant see the plus side to having the volume permanently at 50%. Mind you I can see it being a pain in the butt to constantly have to adjust the volume down. Actually now that I think about it when you are in a call and you adjust the volume doesn't it automatically remember the setting you had it at so when the next call you have comes in its the same? It probably resets its self if you restart the phone.
Regardless... for anyone who does want this you have likely just saved them a TON of tinkering so good work!

I understand where you are coming from but I did not lower the volume by 50% for ALL audio output on the device. The way the CSV file is setup, you can increase/decrease volume using hexadecimal values to different audio output ports (earpiece, headset/audiojack, hands-free bluetooth, and speaker). I did not modify the earpiece, hands-free, or speaker. I just decreased the connected headset audio. It seriously was giving me headaches because it was too loud and the volume dial at the lowest was still unbearably loud. I personally don't want to go deaf so I made the revision.
I may do some more tweaking and increase the earpiece and speaker volume as the earpiece is way too low and the speaker could be a little bit louder.
Life is about balance. Sure ice cream tastes great but if you had more than you could eat all the time, you would probably start to hate it.
this is exactly what i was searching for! i use in-ears and they are way to loud when doing a call. thank you!
Has anyone noticed that the volume is lower in Froyo than it was in Eclair?
I've tried a number of different apps (built in player, tunewiki etc.) and there seems to be a definite reduction in the volume since upgrading. Any ideas?
i was going to post a thread saying volume is much better!
earlier on 2.1 it was crap for me. now both in call volume and media volume are much better and in call volume is clearer. the rear speaker sounds less tinny and is passable now. the shrill hiss / tinny sound at max volume is gone now totally since froyo update i think atleast on the tracks i listed to (preinstalled music and soem youtube videos). i was infact thinking i might reduce the volume a bit which seems a bit of a shock to me knowing the crap rear speaker dished out with the desire. earlier i had said elsewhere that this was the worst speaker i had seen on a phone compared to any of my phones in the last decade, but now i retract that statement. looks like it was a software issue.
i had before the froyo update installed the free 'car mode' app that uses the rear speaker, i would use that mode when ever i put the phone in my trouser pocket as otherwise i would never hear the notifications and often the ring if i was out and about. then after fiddling around i found some sound settings which wasnt obvious at first and disabled the default tick box that made the ring volume and notification volume the same. after disabling that tick box then i could independently adjust the notification volume.
also before the froyo update i installed the free 'quick settings' app which under its settings has a setting for sound, under that apart from the usual volume controls, it has a separate control for system volume which i couldnt find elsewhere on the phone and after increasing that system volume to max, the volume output improved from the rear speakers.
but after froyo it is even better now, both for call volume from earpiece and rear speaker. i cant comment about the earphones as have never used them yet and still in its packet somewhere. wish there was a way to use the fm radio without needing the earphones.
Interesting..I'm specifically speaking of the headphone volume and the ringer volume. It's certainly lower (around 30% lower than 2.1).
I do agree the output from the inbuilt speaker is improved.
Upon further research, I have seen others mention similar issues and also relating to the quality of the sound. I've also seen custom roms using pershoot's audio mod which is supposed to increase loudness. Can this be applied to a stock 2.2 rom (rooted of course)?
Is there a way to increase in-call volume past the default maximum? I tried disabling voice privacy, using Volume+ and manually editing build.prop, all to no avail. I'm running the VZW (LTE) Galaxy Nexus.
Thanks!
Wait on Samsung to use decent speakers in the GNEXII?
I agree it's annoying. The speakers (earpiece and external speaker) are junk. Shocked that they actually sourced such crappy hardware for a "flagship" phone.

I think my phone is defective. I can't change the IN CALL volume while on a call. Using the volume rocker, you see it move up and down on the screen but the volume stays the same.
I have the same problem
I'm really frustrated. The in-call volume on my phone is so quiet, I can barely use it unless I'm in a quiet environment. I have installed volume+, which works great to boost sound level of rings, noises, and music playing from the speaker. But the Volume+ settings for bluetooth and in-call do nothing.
It's funny... when I'm on the bluetooth speaker phone for my car and call someone, it's loud for the first ring, and then much quieter from the second ring onward.
If someone could help fix this problem, I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks,
Kevin
I'm still on stock... so that might be my problem. I have a Motorola Oasis BT and love it, but when I hit the button for voice dialer, it's always at half volume. It resets back to that EVERY TIME! I hate that it can't confirm what it thinks I said. I've dialed so many wrong people... UGH! This has to be a Google issue. I only wish CD+ worked with 4.0. The programmer told me there is no way it will ever be updated to work.
The sound volume through the BT is nothing like my EVO. Even my loud talkers I can barely hear now even on the highest settings.
I want to root the device and hope something comes out to fix it. I drive a truck and need to hear without having to pull off the road.
Is it just me or is the audible call volume too low? Even when I raise the volume on max and press the phone against my face I feel as if the overall volume is shockingly low. Maybe my hearing is damanged from listening too music too much with earphones on high volume? haha.

You may have clear phase enabled in your sounds option, this lowers the volume of your surroundings along with whomever you're speaking too on the other side. This lowers or highers the volume automatically, with algorithms but these algorithms may be a bit messed causing you to hear someone as if they are distant or far rather than close and clear. Try unticking it and try again.
This hasn't always been the case, but maybe it cropped up after the last update.
My in call volume is really low and adjusting the volume doesn't do anything. Maxed out its low. If I go down lower, to its lowest it's still the same volume as maxed. No change in volume up or down.
This is really obnoxious, anyone else have similar problems? I tried googling around but no dice. Found some old stuff circa 2013 for the nexus 5...
EDIT: Only happens in stock dialer app on my mobile phone number. Google voice/hangouts number in call volume works correctly... So it's not a hardware issue.
Yes I have this 50% of the time when on my handsfree in the car. I can ring someone, hear the dial tone is low, hangup and immediately redial and its fine. Its driving me crazy! Changing volume between min and max makes absolutely no difference to call volume.....
