Can't root - always get "data transfer failure" when sending recovery - HTC Wildfire S

Hello,
So I've spent the last couple of days trying to root a T-mobile Wildfire S. The furthest I got is to get the bootloader unlocked (it's still S-ON). I've tried several utilities from xda forums as well as just the command line of this sort: "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" with a few different recoveries. I always get the following error (with the numbers varying, obviously):
sending 'recovery' (4744 KB)...
FAILED (data transfer failure (Unknown error))
finished. total time: 0.014s
I've tried it with the SD card I used on the phone as well as with cleanly formatted one.
Am I missing some basic step somewhere?..
If it helps, this is what it shows me when I do the power+volumedown boot:

This is driving me crazy. Considering I had to reset the phone to unlock the bootloader, not being able to at least get the benefits of rooting it is really frustrating. Any help is appreciated!

Since the error you received was a data transfer error I'm thinking it might be one of two things. Maybe its just your usb cable and you might have better luck with another one or you don't have all the HTC drivers properly installed. Not sure if this is related, but I've read that 2012 versions of the phone give you more trouble when trying to root them.
Sorry my knowledge is limited since I'm a it new to this as well. If its any consolation, I spent almost a whole day figuring out how to root my WFS.

You have to go to htc dev to unlock your bootloader... I think you'll find answer if u look around the forum.... Cause most of us unlocked it...
Without unlocking/s-off u cant get recovery flashed... If u cant flash one recovery try different recoveries... one of them should succeed..

[Q] Help!! Froze on HTC Logo!

Hy guys
I have an HTC T mobile G2 and a few days back it started to froze when i used certain aplications. I had to remove the battery and it all came back to normal till one time when it got stuck on the HTC logo and wont go any further then that. I have tried to run PC10IMG from Hboot on it but its says that Main Version Is older! I have also tried to delete the hboot.n00 file from PC10IMG boot and reziped it but it didnt worked. I have tried to go into recovery and did a full date wipe on it but with no result. In other words I have tried all the options to recover it using my sd card and it didnt work.
I have Vision PVT S-ON

I have also tried to use android sdk to downgrade but no mather what I do I cant get the androidsdk to find my phone. I installed the drivers using HTC sync and PDAnet and all other methods I could find online but with no luck. I ve also used vista and windows 7 but since there no way i can access and enable usb debugging thats not an option for me.
Please if you have any ideas on how to get it to work I would appreciate it.
You could try either a factory reset, or flash a newer PC10IMG
The PC10IMG's are signed, and seeing as you are S-ON, your phone will run a signature check, so you cannot modify the the zip at all, or it will fail.
-Nipqer
I tried to do a factory reset from recovery menu with no luck...its says :
E: can't mount /data/recovery log after it wiped data and cache
I tried the latest PC10IMG i could find including the one you refered too but it still says: Main Version is Oder!
I hope i dont have to wait till a newer version comes out
You might have the bad emmc chip then, there's more info here
-Nipqer
Ok so i looked thru the posts but i cant check to see if I have the good or the bad emmc chip. Now somehow I ve got android sdk to work in fastboot only so if i use comand i get
c:androidsdk/tools/fastboot devices
SH0C4R201107 fastboot
so that means it can see my phone. Is there anyway I can use this and fix it?
I cant get adb devices to work tho......
do you have eng or ship hboot? cause fastboot only really works with eng hboot.
-Nipqer
I think I have ship boot....I mean i never rooted the phone or anything
so nothing I can do then?
oh yeah, should've realised that...
From what I can work out there's nothing you can do, is it still under warranty?
-Nipqer
Nope... I have tried to flash recovery.img but i get
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (4652 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.825s]
writing 'recovery'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 1.579s
I guess there is nothing else i could do except get a new phone...thanks for your help

[Q] HTC desire Z stuck in booting after downgrade attempt

Hello,
I have a phone that is now stuck at white screen with green htc logo after an attempt to downgrade following this guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
However i had already downloaded a PC10IMG.zip with this tool :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521019
I first tried using the tool, but it always failed. It seemed to me the script failed on getting temproot. (I then manually downloaded the PC10IMG.zip in the .bat file just incase it was a problem with the wget it uses or something)
After that i followed the guide instead and gained temproot, changed version and gaining supercid through the goldcard method.
I then tried downgrading using the manual method using the PC10IMG.zip mentioned above (Its alot smaller than the ones mentioned in the guide. I have a suspicion it is for another phone perhaps). Bootloader recognized it and started "upgrade" process as expected. After it worked with that for a while it rebooted and since then I have been stuck on the white/green splash screen on normal boots.
I can still get into Hboot, but I cant do anything there. Nothing seems to work there. Neither volume +/-, trackpad nor powerbutton does anything.
I can also get into fastboot. This seems to work better, but when i try to flash the image then it just gives me :
D:\platform>fastboot-windows flash zip StockRom.zip
sending 'zip' (291447 KB)... FAILED (remote: 02 data length is too large)
HBOOT screen shows me the following:
VISION PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.82.0008
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.08.04.30_M3
I havent tried altering the contents of my SD card in fear of making things even worse.
Any tips/tricks/hint would be greatly appreciated!
Got some rather excellent help from #g2root to fix this today.
My main problem was that I had flashed the wrong img and that my Golden SD was not working correctly. Got that sorted out by using another SD and made it golden in another device.
Then proceeded to upgrade it to the newest g2 software (since that was what i had tried to do in the first place. Namely using the g2 img in a Desire Z device), downgrade it, rooted it and installed the necessary tools to get Andromadus running
Thanks to pierre_ja, skorgon, Uni_Ced and Catherall for the patience, moral support and excellent help! The amount of handholding from pierre_ja was astonishing
G2 img
Can i ask where you obtained the G2.img file, I am in a similar situation. Thanks
We used this one PC10IMG_Vision_TMOUS_2.15.531.3_Radio_12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3.zip

Not with an HTC Vision, you can't... You need an PC to do this.
That's too bad. The G2 used to easy. Thanks for the reply!
Edit: So that goes for the G2 aswell correct?

This is your problem, adb can't see your phone. Was it up and running when you tried this ? If so it's your adb setup. Have you used adb before on this phone ? See my signature for a link to a guide to setting up adb.

For the G2 there is a new program called mr. root, wich makes everything a bit easier, but you still need an computer to do it. So that's correct indeed.
From memory that 99 error means you used htcdev.
You can find more info on that here

The cmd's seem to be working from the cmd prompt. for example the phone did go into boot loader.
The phone is in a state where it will not boot up. Fails on the htc logo.
However boot loader is not functioning, every time it directs me to clock work orange mod screen. Which does not function either
Same problem!!
Hi, im really new here, and i googled the 'symptoms' of my broken HTC desire Z and this thread came up. My phone is showing exactly the same writting as what you described, but i really really dont know why. i dont know what all these technical terms mean/do but i REALLY miss my phone and want it to work again!! I would really really REALLY appreciate any help anyone could offer me, because the warranty is up so i cant send it back!
Thank you so much!
So to get this straight, you've tried to root your phone and it went wrong. If so, can you still get into your recovery?
-Turn off phone, hold down the power and volume up button. Then ou should get your bootloader. Once that's loaded slelect recovery with your volume buttons and confirm (press "enter") by pressing your powerbutton. Then your phone should restart in recovery. If you haven't changed your recovery image, you should be able to get the stock ROM running again.-

You're on wrong section mate.
You will have better assistance in Q&A section.
Tips: you need 1.28.771.x RUU to revert to stock. 1.26.771.2 won't work as yours is HBOOT-0.94.0000
I tried
RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.9_Radio_1.1204.103.14_release_256469_signed
and it says there is a customer id error,

Had you try reflash stock recovery. I had successfully Ruu 1.26.707.2 from cook 1.28.401.09 then OTA to 1.28.707.10 and pass through a lot of pain warnings.
With correct original ruu, it allows you to recover (try mainfixer.bat) to origin factory status.

[Q] Any recovery from this brick?

Hi All,
I'm hoping an expert will be able to help me. I have a Desire HD that a friend has asked me to have a look at knowing that I have tinkered around with my android phones. She said it "just happened" while she was out riding her bike one day.
Basically, all I'm getting is the green on white HTC logo regardless of what I try. I can get into HBOOT & fastboot and have tried to flash recovery.img, run RUU, flash boot.img and flash PD98IMG.zip (both via fastboot & direct from root of SD card). I obviously couldn't root the device using AAHK as I can't boot into the phone to enable USB debugging and adb obviously won't work for the same reason.
I've tried flashing both 4ext & CWM recoveries neither of which work. When I try to boot into recovery using by selecting that option in HBOOT it just goes straight back to the green on white HTC logo.
In a vein attempt to get anywhere with it I managed to "unlock" the bootloader using htcdev instructions but it hasn't succeeded in helping with the problem.
HBOOT details are as follows:

The RUU I have tried works to a point and then fails but I'm guessing it's because I need the Vodafone UK RUU which doesn't seem to be anywhere. I tried this one to no avail

If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

ok, are you sure that you actually flashed recovery successfully? unless you have a messed motherboard, you should be able to flash recovery image and then a custom rom.
A RUU won´t work as you have unlocked the bootloader. Make sure that you are flashing the recovery from fastboot and you get the OKAY. Finished in the cmd / terminal session.
If you need further help, just let me know. :good:

Unable to install custom ROM

Hey there!
I'm pretty new to the Android platform. I've been on iOS for many years.
I already flashed a custom firmware on a Moto G, which worked fine. (SlimKat)
I thought about doing the same thing with my HTC One X.

Unlike the Moto G Bootloader, I'm unable to erase any partition but the cache. All of the others return the same annoying error message.
Example:
./fastboot erase system
erasing 'system'...
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
I am not able to boot into the OS or the recovery partition anymore, so they have probably been wiped. When I reboot the device, it's either a boot loop or it simply shuts down.
I already tried to flash CWM and TWRP. Each of those were successful, at least according to the terminal... Unfortunately, same thing happens when the phone reboots.
I also tried to flash SlimKat with the "./fastboot flash zip file_name.zip" command, even if it isn't supposed to work (I believe).
In despair, I flashed the boot image from the ROM but still without result.
I did all of those commands both in the FastBoot mode ands the RUU (./fastboot oem rebootRUU).
If anyone knows how to fix this, it would be really appreciated.
All the posts related to the issue did not help me in any ways.
Thank you!
