THIS PROBLEM HAS NOW BEEN FIXED, GO TO POST #19 FOR STEPS I TOOK TO FIX THE PROBLEM - thanks alot to the help below.
I recently installed or flashed (whatever the term is), a rom/theme thing to my phone. Now it hasn't worked out how I liked, and I want to go back to stock, but when I restart the phone and go to wipe date/factory reset, it just restores to the ROM's startup..
How can I go back to the stock 2.1 installation on my phone, so I can try the official update to Froyo, and not these ROMs.
However, is there a benefit to using any of the ROMs that have been posted on this site? Aside from the themes of course..
Thanks
Denno
aside from the themes, the cook normally remove bloatware from samsung and all that. to speed things up and free some space. with custom kernels, themes (like you said) and all that good stuff.
to go back to a stock rom, you simply flash your stock rom.
if your stock rom's a dxjg4, you flash dxjg4 and so on.
Thanks Adevem.
How do I go about getting my stock rom? I have no idea what my stock rom actually was though :S. I've heard lots of talk of flashing so many different roms and to be honest, it's quite overwhelming to try and work it out..
I am also keen on getting back my Optus app that was on the phone, which told me how much of my cap I have used etc.. Will this be possible? Without contacting Optus themselves, as I'm not sure if what I did with the phone is allowed within the contract.. The Optus app isn't in the Market either..
I did backup all of my apps and stuff using Titanium Backup before I installed the ROM, but I can't Restore the Optus ones :S. I can restore other ones though... It could be because they're not made to run on Android 2.2 yet, but if not, then I don't know..
once you've flashed your phone you've voided your contract ;p sorry to say.
since you're Optus... you're gonna have to ask around what was the stock rom for Optus, cause i have no idea.
once you've found out, head over to http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm, download your rom and flash back to stock. the optus applications should be installed properly back on the rom. if it doesn't, send me a pm and i might have a work around with a detailed guide.
Thanks heaps!! I know 3 other people who have the same phone with Optus (I talked it up quite a bit when I got it lol)
How do I get them to check the ROM though? Do I go to Settings > About Phone?
And what do I look for in there? I see Firmware Version, Baseband Version, Kernel Version, Build Number.
Which is the one I want from them?
Thanks heaps.
I'm not sure if the following links below will help, you could try it, and make sure you can get into download/recovery mode with the buttons before doing anything as warned in the link too.
Firmware: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1537182
Optus my account app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742310 (8th post for download link)
*#*#1234#*#* will show you the version for
PDA
MODEM
CSC
cross check with the firmware you're about to flash / after you've flashed.
Amazing guys, thanks so much

Cool, post back again when you get everything worked nicely, someone else like you with this problem might ask in the near future Enjoy!
Ok so I've got the digits from my mate, but I can only find the PDA one on samefirmware. I can't find the PHONE or CSC one.
Here are my numbers:
PDA: I9000DTJG4
PHONE: I9000DTJG3
CSC: I9000OPSJG1
Is it just the PDA that I need to get? Or do I need the other two aswell?
Thanks..

you mean the site only provide the pda file? just flash it anyway, put the tar file as pda. some firmwares are packed all in one.
do report back if it matches!
Ohk cool..
Well some what cool... I have no idea how to flash it lol. It says on samfirmware to follow their guide 100%, but I can't find their guide?
I feel like such a douche.. I'm studying software engineering and I can't work this out, but I've never seen this stuff before... :S
Sorry for the newb questions..
Wait... this might be a stupid question, but if you don't know how to flash a ROM, how did you get the new ROM on your phone in the first place?
Well I followed the directions in the Darksys forum post. All that involved was putting a file on the root of my internal card, and then restarting the phone into the recovery mode.. That wasn't so hard..
Is it the exact same thing? I keep hearing so many different things, like using Odin, or playing with Kies and the registry..
I'm just confused as to what the heck I'm supposed to do.
Could someone please just point me toward a place that will guide me through the flashing?
I don't wanna stuff my phone up anymore than it already is..
You need to use Odin. If you look at the bottom of the samfirmware page (very bottom) you'll see PDF guides in a couple languages.
It's pretty easy, put phone in download mode (volume down + center button + power), plug in, open Odin, click PDA and select your .tar file. If you want to repartition, select the PIT indicated on samfirmware and check repartition. And click Start.
Phone will then flash the ROM and reboot, pretty simple =P

http://nfye.com/toolkit/Doc-Froyo.pdf
there are some instructions here.. they are not exactly your firmware that you want to flash but it will give you an idea..
on samfirmware where you downloaded the rom it should say if it need a 512 or a 803 pit file
Check that before you do anything ;-)
Argh, they're so obvious down there aren't they lol. I was looking in the menu at the top for a 'tutorial' option or something similar.
Thanks for the quick tip though, I shall hopefully be able to run with it now .
I'll try and document the whole thing and then show everyone what I've done (providing it works for me, otherwise Ima be very p'd off lol)
Yeeeeeeah!! soo happy. Thanks guys, this worked perfectly! I've got the MyAccount for Optus app back in that ROM too!
It was so easy wasn't it! wow lol.
Anyways, I didn't really document it, as there isn't anything I did any different to the instructions here, but to reiterate, this is what I did:
My phone was already rooted, so I used a program - Android Commander - on my PC, to copy EVERYTHING from my phone to my computer (back-up). This can only be done if your phone is rooted though.
Then I downloaded the following firmware from samfirmware: NB. I culd only find the PDA, but as it turns out, this was all I needed (in my case, with this firmware)
I have a Galaxy S I9000 with Optus in Australia, so my digits were:
PDA: I9000DTJG4
PHONE: I9000DTJG3
CSC: I9000OPSJG1
Next I downloaded Odin from samfirmware.com, and also downloaded the tutorial from the very bottom of the Firmwares page
I then had everything downloaded, so I opened the tutorial and followed that exactly
You need to also make sure you backup your contacts, as they will all be lost. I was lucky that I did the copy of the whole contents of my phone, as I hadn't properly synced my contacts with my google account, but I have remedied this now .
I'm now back with my stock Eclair firmware, complete with Optus MyAccount app, and I couldn't be happier .
Now to find a proper upgrade to Froyo .
Thanks for the help guys, very much appreciated.

there's actually a video on youtube on how to flash. damn it, I should have linked it to you. helped me on the first time I got an android.
anyway, glad you got it all figured out!
Sorry for being noobish, just got a nexus, UK and it's on 4.0.1, been reading a lot, and very much overwhelmind, now, coming from my galaxy s2, which, I had been used to flashing and routing daily. I managed to use the toolkit, to root my phone, smashing app, will definitely donate, to the dev, as i managed to root, in pretty much 5mins. My problem is, whats the best route, to follow, in order for me to have the latest stock 4.0.4, because I have read a lot of stuff, so now muddled as to what path to take. Is it a matter, of just downloading the official rom, in the general section, and flashing it via custom recovery, sorry for the noobish questions, it's been a long day, trying to get to know the phone, am sure, if someone can help me from here, all be fine. I also tried to seek for an update, under about, but phone says am on latest firmware, which is 4.0.1,so appreciate your guidance please.

Phew cheers buddy, haven't tried this yet, as at work, will give it a short when I get home, anything easier than this please, as i just have a forbia for anything called adb please? Also, don't understand why my device is still on 4. 0. 1, been hitting the update button continously with no luck, but prepared to use other means, as suggested above, to get the device updated. Thanks again in advance.

You CAN flash factory images through the toolkit you know. You can download them at Google, put them in the correct subfolder of the GNEX toolkit folder and flash away. In order to do that you do have to have an unlocked bootloader and you will loose your root. Unlocking the bootloader will loose all your data (including under the SDCARD folder (so everything you stored will be gone)!. Rooting can be done again through the toolkit...
Or you can download a different flashable zip file that you can flash from CWM recovery.
Hmm thanks this looks more like my sort of of a thing "different flashable zip file that you can flash from CWM recovery.", were can i find this please?. Thanks.
As the title states, I finally got the prompt to do an update for phone, from Orange, but when I set it to install it, it reboots and says failed.
I think it is due to me having CWM on the phone, so it cannot do a clean restart, how do I get passed this, if anyone has a How To for this please help me, also will I be able to save all the apps, messages, contacts and settings on the phone.I have stock Rom on phone.
All and any help much appreciated in advance.
Duh! You need stock recovery. You need to unlock your phone again and flash stock recovery with this command
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Relock and try again

Hi there, I am already unlocked, so do I have to Lock it again, then flash stock Rom.
Will I have to lose my apps and settings.
Sorry for the noob questions, but this phone is new to me so I don't know the correct way.
Seems a bit over the top to start off with Duhh, just because I don't know, so therefore I need to ask to know, I am a brainy person, but still I would rather ask for the right way rather than guess and brick my £400.00 phone.
Thankyou for your reply, but I still need help on this.

Sorry. Well you need to have stock rom as well as recovery. Once you have both you have to relock your phone and try to update again
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
You do not need to relock to apply ota update. Just have the stock recovery and then try again. There are links to the stock recoveries of different versions in the cwm sticky

All done Update installed, but I did do a backup of things, but when I got things back up and running again, it did not save my maps and such, I work as a mobile care support person, so the maps were important to me, so I wil have to find a better way to do things.
I also had to try to remember usernames and passwords, I never write any down. but its a shame that an image of phone, os and everything can not be done, so as not to have to put them in again, so that everything works straight off the bat.
Thanks for any and all advice, great forum here and alot of very helpful people.
Has anyone been able to root this device, I have read and it seems to impossible. I have read on the Dirty Cow method https://www.xda-developers.com/9-year-old-linux-kernel-bug-dubbed-dirty-cow-can-root-every-version-of-android/ I am asking has anyone tried this at all, or has found a way to root this devices, thanks for any assistance.
It could be possible if someone built a custom ROM with the su biniries. I tried it once but I had no way of flashing it

Wouldn't it be possible to downgrade the firmware and then use chainfires root, or use Odin and flash a different csc and use another carriers root method? Does metro do this phone? 'Cause couldn't you flash Metro Pcs bloatware then use the Device Unlock App? Or is that to little logic and breaking down computer code?

This topic is dead. And whoever already answers our questions with you))
Hi there,
Thanks for reading. I just got my Note 10+ SM-N9750 (BRI firmware). I'm in the U.S using this phone with t-mobile.
My end goals are:
1. Switch to TGY firmware
2. Root + Unlock bootloader
3. Install TWRP
4. Install Mentalmuso's Rom
I've been using the phone a few days already so it's "setup" But i have everything backed up so i can wipe this baby at any moment throughout this process without loss.
My questions (so many....ahh)
Ok first before switching to TGY do i need to sign out of my google and samsung accounts? I assume the firmware change is gonna wipe my phone...? (Again that's fine....just trying to figure out when it is imperative to log out of those accounts.
Root.... i believe i understand to follow the exynos guide, but using TGY files/firmware. Outside of that are ALL the steps the same? Also do i need multidisabler?
Items (3. and 4.) I see the info in the O.P's and throughout the threads.....it sounds like the current install methods etc might not require what the O.P states as there have been new developments.....But I'm just not sure if I'm right about that......
Any pointers/help would be appreciated.
P.s.....I feel like a complete noob, I'm just having the toughest time wrapping my head around these processes.....and don't wanna just go doing whatever without a clearer idea of WHAT I'M DOING....LOL
To save you from writing me a specific guide (which would be awesome !, ha)
If you want to just point me to already created guides and point out which specific steps are not needed, or are missing etc, that would be great.
Thank you again !

Do you mean you're on the N975U? Or possibly the N975U1?
**Edit. Based on you saying "exynos", then neither.....
you could start HERE looks like someone was asking the same question?

Hi, thanks for your reply.
No, I'm using the chinese n9750/ds....
I mentioned exynos as the root guide to follow, as i understand it is the same process.
**Also thanks....i have seen/read and watch that thread, but haven't seen anyone with this model, flashing at this "later" date.....i believe magisk and twrp have "changed" so there may be a newer method i have yet to discover.

Ok, so do I
Odin TGY firmware, then Oem Unlock process, then flash twrp and then just install Mentalmuso's rom?
Is root embed in the rom now, or do i need to still patch AP file and all the other steps?
Or should i be rooting before installing TWRP....any clarity is appreciated
