GSIV gets warm while charging - SD Card? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I noticed my GSIV was getting warm while charging... I put it side by side with my girls GSIII, and hers was nice and cool.
I decided to take out the SD Card, and viola! My phone is cold again.
I'm thinking this could be cause by the SD Card itself.
Anyone else has this issue while charging?
I'm using a SanDisk Ultra 32GB Class 10

Same here. It's in the general area of the camera

Have the same card but doesn't get that warm while charging that I have noticed .

yea, it turned out to be my SD Card. I took it out and it charges nicely.
I also decided to take it out and my battery life went UP UP UP.
stupid SanDisk.

[Q] G2 extended battery problem

I bought an extended red battery, and it was working fine until today. I dropped my phone and now the battery will only work for a little bit and then the phone will shut off and not turn back on.
The original battery works fine, no problems. So my question is could my dropping of the phone have done something to the extended battery?
Did you peel the red sticker off? If you did then what's happening is the battery is making contact with the metal sd card holder and shorting your phone. An easy fix, which was already posted in another thread, is to simply put a piece tape on the battery in the same spot where it would normally touch the sd card holder and you should be good to go.

Probably dropping of the phone Idk but I dropped my phone about three days ago and after that it would not connect to signal so I restored to normal and it started to get signal later on but now it is really weak where I would of gotten full bars like my house now I only get 2 bars usually.

What's with the weird SD card slot design?

Anyone know why HTC decided to go with that really weird design for the SD card? It's such a pain in the Ass =( why not just a normal slot.
I imagine that to help make the phone thinner they brought it to the inside. I also imagine they figure that with 32gb cards getting cheaper, more and more people will just "set it and forget it." All this is purely speculation though.

I really wish the SD card was more accessible. If it was a spring loaded slot feed on the side of the phone, for example.
It would be nice to swap cards and have one card for "ipod mode", one with some movies or tv shows and one for general use, for example.
Even having to pop the battery cover would be OK, but having to remove the battery is a showstopper.

AGREED

Maybe the required removal of the battery thing is to make sure that you don't eject the SDCard while writing to it/reading from it or anything like that.
I dunno.
I'd love a more accessible design too.

I thought of that too... ideally, we could have the device sense when the battery cover is off and umount the sdcard at that point.
The question remains what to do if the sdcard is busy at the time. I guess the same problem exists when attaching the usb cord in "drive" mode, and that seems to work OK, so do whatever it does
Oh well, nice to speculate but we're stuck with the current (crap) design.
Hmm or are we? Flex ribbon cable to make the sdcard external anyone? I can't think of an elegant way to do this, unfortunately, there's no room between the battery and battery cover, that's for sure.

S4 very hot during charging

Man this phone gets very hot to the touch during charging. Works fine but gets hot. Have to turn on speaker phone to use during a call or use the headphones. Anyone else have a hot S4? Lol

LoL... yeah these bad boys get pretty hot while charging or gaming ect... I wondered how hot so I got a cpu temp. App to check... average was 40°c and between 35-50°c .... but these are quad 1.9 mhz cores 50°c is 122°f thats kinda hot....
Ive had many other issues with the s4 the heat wasnt a concern unless I chinged my ear hair...lol...cpus run hot expecially a quad 1.9 in a phone..... id get the temp app to see how hot ur phone really is getting. But i wouldnt worry toooo much.
I JUST posted a thread in QnA bout my phone issues... been threw 3 s4's in 3 weeks.... im pretty pissed..
Edit: im sure u already know but different cases make them hotter....

Indeed...... Awesome device when or if you get a good one! I've returned two and I'm playing the waiting game for the new firmware update and possible new batches of phones to see if it will help.
I would love an aluminum case for this phone as it would make the ultimate heat sink...... Albeit at the expense of possible signal degradation.

The factory charger is a 2A charger. Try using a 1A charger and it should be cooler. Of course it will charge slower also.
Wouldn't an aluminum shell make the phone feel even more hot? It would prevent throttling sure, but most of the complaints seem to stem from people saying the temperature is too hot for them, and the aluminum would just transfer even more of that heat to your hand. It seems the problem comes from the placement of the chip and battery, more than just the plastic back.
You could maybe try installing setcpu & adding custom profiles. I have it so it under clocks while charging. I leave it over night & it doesn't go past 85°f for me.

I figured out my problem. It was the custom kernel I loaded. Went back to a stock kernel. No more heat issues. Now it only gets warm and not hot! Lol

It also might be your SD Card. I have a SanDisk Ultra 64GB. It got VERY hot while charging, but when I took it out and put an old 16GB SD Card, it charged normal.
Mine gets hot only when charging with the wall charger... Whenever I just plug on the PC it charges with normal temp.

Which old 16gb SD Card was that @henreeg? Brand & Class?
I'm having the same heat issue with Samsung EVO 32Gb with my S4. It would be nice if can find the right SD Card, thanks

It was another 16GB SanDisk. I ended up exchanging my 64GB sd card [same model] and the second one worked.
Here's my Amazon review: http://www.amazon.com/review/R21GBSRO1BAHDW/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm
The second one ended up working perfectly fine. You should exchange yours if you have a chance, just make sure that the sd card is the culprit.

Thanks, i'll try to exchange mine with this. Definitely my card is the culprit.

Heating up near home button.

I've been having an issue lately where my S3 will get pretty hot to the touch right above the home button on the screen. The last time this was happening was when I found out that my SD card reader is apparently going bad.
Is it possible that the SD reader is still causing the heat or is there another cause?

that could be but i don't think so as the card slot is higher in the phone. all of the antennas are at the bottom of the phone and if my memory is right so is the cpu. if you are using the phone longer then normal the cpu will heat and make the phone warm front and back also if you have bad cell signal, your phone will turn up the power to the antenna to keep the strongest signal and in turn use more battery. some phone cases can make the phone warmer then normal too. i had a rubber case on an old hd2 phone and after using it for bit it was really warm. if you have just changed or put a case on your phone, maybe take it off and see if it still heats up. just a thought. worse case, i think your phone is going to let you down when you need it most due to being fried from excess heat. if you can't find the reason, take it to sprint and see what those wonderful people say.
The SD card slot is right in the area that I'm talking about.
I'm about to order another battery since my battery life has been kinda crappy lately. I've had the phone for over a year, so it's probably about time to order one.

The exact same thing was happening to my s3 since the first day I got it. It didn't happen to my dads which he got on the same day as me. This excessive heating happened both on touchwiz and aosp with and without the buttons lights turned on. Sprint told me it was normal so at that point it was whatever I got used to it. I'm pretty sure the excessive overheating from doing literally nothing (on debloated aosp roms) eventually destroyed my sd card, I believe.

Have the same issue, right on the bottom of the screen and around the home button, back gets pretty too, within about 5 minutes of booting

Gents normally the Device should only feel warm to the touch after extended use. By extended I mean over 45 min, an hour, or more. Even then it should not feel so hot you need to put it down. If your Device is feeling warm near the top of the home button, you may want to Un-Root and take it in to be looked at. If you want to see some pics of the inside of the S3 check out THIS thread.

Note 4 external SD card spring?

Does the Note 4 not have a spring for the external SD card reader? Every time the phone vibrates, the SD card malfunctions because it's not locked in place.

I haven't had that at all. Maybe the metal casing around yours is somehow bent or misshapen? .

Mine doesn't have a spring and it feels very snug when inserting it in. I thought it was odd that it didn't have the spring but whatever, no issues here.

No not really it just pushes in and is snug. No spring feeling or sound
I think they took out the spring to save space.

I would imagine you can fix that by bending the metal sd card cage downwards very slightly, so it holds the card more tightly.
