Google Maps v7 Performance - Nexus 4 Themes and Apps

I am sure that most people have been updated to the new Google Maps (v7) by now... For the most part I am happy with the change, with the exception of the fact that they have removed My Maps, mere weeks before I go on holiday (I have spent a lot of time making a custom map of POI for my trip which is now wasted).
However, the biggest disappointment for me is how sluggish the app runs on my Nexus 4 (CM10.1). Compared to Maps v6 which was BUTTERY SMOOTH in every respect, the newer maps is noticeably slower (in terms of frame-rate when panning around, or navigating). Its certainly not prohibitively slow by any means, but there's no doubt that v6 ran better. What's strange is that I'm seeing a lot of people saying that it is "very smooth" in the reviews on Play which has lead me to question whether it is not a hardware limitation as much as it is a ROM limitation of some sort.
How have you found the performance to be so far? Please indicate whether you're on stock, or a custom ROM.

On Nexus 7 : Is much slower
On N4: just slower

It's junk.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

it's definitely smoother for me, both scrolling and zooming. Stock ROM.
i also don't like that they removed My Maps.

Its slow as **** on the nexus 4 and 7
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

No issues here. Scrolling around the map is definitely smoother for me. I've used it a few times for navigation and haven't experienced any slowness.

Stock galaxy note 2. New version sucks for me. If you leave the app and then go back it force closes every time for me. Was running maps got a text and when I try to go back it force closes. Regardless of what app you go to, if you leave and come back....boom, Force close. Uninstalling update till they get it right.

Same here, no lag issue whatsoever CM10.1.2 / AK faux Hybrid

Love the new version. Much simpler and smoother.

Performance is great for me. Really like the new maps.
What exactly do you need the my maps for? Would saving a location for your POI do just the same thing? Also, in settings under map history it saves virtually every address or place you searched for.
Its cool to be able to load up all your POI and create one single navigation to get to them all, but I don't think its really a hassle to navigate to one spot, than point in your next poi and navigate to there and so on and so forth.
Just trying to help.

I have no problems with Google Maps v7 on my Nexus 4

No issues with V7 either. Running PA and no lag at all. Smooth sailing for me. The transition from maps to navigation has improved a lot as well. But YMMV as we see here in this thread.

I feel that mine is much smoother now. It also appears to lock my location much quicker with GPS off. That makes me happy.

Much slower here too. Using nexus 4, 7 or crome om any laptop
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium

No doubt its a bit sluggish with minimal lag on my stock Nexus 4 running Franco Kernel. As for the Nexus 7 ... Super sluggish pure stock btw.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium

Runs great here on N4 with Slim bean build 7
Sent from my Nexus 4

No lag here. Love the update!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

Yeah, I've been getting pretty sluggish performance as well on my stock N4.
I thought I was the only one..

no lag, or stutter on latest PA build.
I am still angry, because they removed the "labs" features :/

I feel a bit lag on my transformer pad but on my nexus, not a lag at all. I also find it a bit more battery friendly as it seems to be on the background process much less

Is your Google+ app as laggy as mine?

After updating to the newest version of Google+ (v. 3.2.0) from Google Play I've noticed about 0,5 sec lagg when scrolling up and down through the threads. Browsing through this app in not buttery smooth for sure. I am using stock Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4.1.1 Jelly Bean yakju version. I even reverted back my phone to factory settings to see if it helps - no change.
Do you guys experience the same problem. Any suggestions?
Same here on stock 4.1.2 with a relatively small set of apps. Not as much as laggy but choppy is how I would describe it

I enabled gpu rendering in developer settings but it didn't help at all.
I think it must be application issue itself and we need to wait for solid upgrade. I personally think that I am only pemanent beta test mouse for Google Inc.
Lag has gotten bad enough for me that I've stop using it. Results used to be near instant and now 8 secs min.

Laggy as hell and since the latest update, it isn't displaying the "nearby" post appropriately.
Some users reported same problem on iOS either.

Nope, works fine for me.
Nope. Not very. Just a bit laggy.
I see that UI on 4.2 is not so fast as it was on 4.1.2, but some apps (e.g. chrome) works a bit faster.
So, yep - I'm happy with the update.

People who aren't having speed issues: Can you test a couple of scenarios I've noticed in particular?
1) In the new gmail: tap on the account switching area at the top. This loads far slower for me with the new app
2) Put your phone to sleep or wake it up. Sleep/wake seems quite a bit less responsive in 4.2 on both of the stock phones I've tested.

Disable all animations in developers options and screen off animation will be less noticeable.

i made i wipe cache and now is working fine. thanks a lot
No. 4.2 is just as fast as 4.1.2 on my GNex... which was fast whether I use the stock UI or Apex Launcher. Granted there is an initial sluggishness during the initial boot from services loading in the background... but after that my GNex is smooth and fast.
Those of you experiencing slow speeds: Try flashing the factory image from Google. I had one app that didn't work properly and a flash to factory stock and re-root fixed the problem. It's possible you have an app running in the background eating up resources too.
I understand these threads and posts must be annoying to those who aren't having issues, but to people like me, who OTAed a bone stock phone and are left with a less-than-satisfactory experience, it is equally frustrating. Especially considering how many improvements were made with 4.1-4.1.2, which have now been rendered moot.
I guess my only recourse is to wipe and flash stock, but because I'm not rooted and don't have any backups, it'll be fun to rebuild my phone.

Turn off that live wallpaper! JK hopefully that isnt the case...
Each Android iteration on the GN has gotten smoother for me. 4.2 is pretty amazing out of the box, much like 4.1 was when compared to 4.0.3/.4. The GN is definitely not lacking when it comes to having what it takes for 4.2.
4.2 is really, really fast. When they fix camera rotation and recent apps, it will be perfect. It killed my urge for N4. Now I can easily wait for one more year... Good job Google.

[Q] Major lag spike when playing a game and connected to wi-fi.

So basically I had this issue for awhile now, even on stock ROM and kernel. Now i'm using CM10 nightly with franco kernel. Whenever I play a game offline or out of reach pf Wi-Fi, the game runs perfectly fine. But when connected to Wi-Fi i'm getting huge frame drops (1-5 fps) every like 2-3 min. Maybe it has already been answered, but yes, I did search the forums, I searched pretty much everywhere. Anyone had similar issues?
What about 3g/4g?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I do,and I still did not got a workaround with this...but I don't have this issue only when connected to wifi, just every time i do something(play a game, scrolling, switching homescreens) the only workaround is using faux kernel wich is pretty good(in my case)
Maybe an app like facebook

Yep even with 3G/4G.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
It does it with mostly 3D games, but it does it as well for a few 2D games like Drag Racing. I noticed that turning off auto-sync got rid of the lag for about 10 minutes. But then the framedrops would happen again.

Seems as though you have something running in the background.
You could try, is catch what is going on via logs (ddms may be helpful here since it has a built in log, but you can get them via adb as well) or adb shell commands, adb shell top for example. Trying and see what is going on when the lag spikes hit.
Alternatively, you can disable/uninstall apps that could possibly be the offenders. Facebook apps, twitter apps, messaging, email...perhaps even widgets. Then try and game until you figure out what the offender was.
This is assuming it is another app at fault.
Alright thanks for the advice! Won't be able to try it right now as I'm going on a vacation but as soon as I can I'll do it and report back.

Why does it lag?

Why does the GN lag so much when installing a app from the playstore?
And can something be done that i can use the device while a app gets installed?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I think it's because Android is just not so optimized, it lags on almost every debice
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
On my stock optimus2x or anfriends note 2 there is not the slightest lag when installing a app.
GN basicly locks up so i doubt its android somehow...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Because the CPU takes a hit with processing the install (unpacking resources, etc). OMAP CPUs are very open for development/modding compared to other CPUs, but the side effect is they're not quite as powerful due to avoiding some libraries and hardware techniques other CPUs might use that are proprietary in certain cases.

Personally I don't have that problem with my gnex . Its smooth as ever but, I don't leave unused apps using resources like fb or other rogue apps.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
so i went back to stock (with the exact same apps as before) and this is a huge difference, no lag at all, no even when installing apps from the playstore. no need for any seeder or lagfix hack to get the device working as it should.
so now the question is wether the lag apears as well after some time or if the lag thing is only present in custom roms. and if so then the question is why.
i will keep my device on stock for some weeks to see how it goes.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
It will almost certainly come back, and it's not only present in custom ROMs. A clean install of a custom ROM should result in the same speed boost as a clean install of a stock ROM. See the following thread:
Nexus Storage Performance Over Time & TRIM
I would also say it depends on what governor and I/O scheduler you use. I would say try the stock settings of interactive and cfq.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
as far as i can remember all custom roms literaly froze when a app was installed. so far i have not seen this on stock and i dont think that is a mather of trim or sheduler/governor.
but i will find out soon enough i guess...
Edit: forgot to ask, you are on a custom rom and your device doesnt freeze while installing apps?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I have tried 3-4 ROMs so far and never faced this problem.
While downloading apps, I can parallely do other tasks, play games, make and receive calls.
And if this helps, My GNex is 7 months old.

I agree. I'm using XENON HD Stable-4.0 Franco kernel r364. Ever since dumping the stock ROM, the Play Store performance is painfully slow. I have 276 apps on my Galaxy Nexus and the Play Store seems to be the only app that impairs the phone's performance so dramatically.
As a previous poster said, a lot has to happen when installing an app. So I tear myself away from my beloved comm dev from a few minutes and do something else. Like relate to my wife

[Q] Is there lag like when the S4 came out?

From watching the review videos, the Note 3 seems pretty fluid, much more snappier than the S4. Just wondering if I can get anyone's perspective on it? How snappy is the UI? Does the browser have any lag? Overall performance? Thanks
I have no lag at all. When I took the battery out or restart it takes a min with the optimizing apps at the beginning bc its like 270 apps installed but after that I have no complaints. Not sure if it does the optimizing thing bc im stock rooted or if thats normal.

I second this. I can't see any lag on anything. And I mean anything. Launcher, launching and using apps, scrolling, etc. Super buttery smooth all around.
Third this... Zero lag at all!
I have zero lag. I'm running a stock rooted Rom on T-Mobile with Apex Launcher. The 2.3 GIG processor and the 3 GIG of Ram handle this with lots of room to spare!!!

Thanks to all ya'll, thats very good to hear. I cannot stand lag.

No lag for the most part, but when turning off the screen, there is a delay from when the button is pressed to when it decides to actually do something.
No lag for me. This phone is fast and smooth.
