Then, there is no correct answer to that question. You experiment and find what is best for you. Best is subjective.

Stay on franco kernel
I may advise you to try fugumod, leankernel, faux123, trinity also

Kernels are the easiest things to flash. Best thing to do is try them out for yourself for a day or 3 and then move on to the next one to see if the performance is better.
What works for one person, doesn't necessarily mean it will work for you due to differences in chip-sets, usage patterns,...

[Q] Best Kernel for CM Nightlies

I've tried them all and the only difference is that with Koush's kernels the built in wifi tether works. Besides that I have not noticed anything different.
I think the built in is just fine these days.
Keeping in mind that i dont overclock, I think the built in kernel is the fastest (34's according to linpack) and most stable whilst KK's BFS #2 is the least stable.
When it comes to battery charge/drain... I have no clue.
I really wish we had more kernel devs. KK is busy with his sammy and no one else is making kernels for us that use the new tech i see in the other forums.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus will be here tomorrow!!!

First time Samsung user coming from EVO 3D. What are your recommendations for ROM's and kernels? And is CWM favored over stock recovery? I guess i will try them all tomorrow. Thanks in advance
-CWM Is yes the best and most used recoveries. (Are there even other ones, lol?)
-I recommend AOKP (Android Open Kang Project) Milestone 3 or the latest nightly, you can find these in the Android development section of the GNex.
-For kernels, they all act differently for everyone. Some people are great with franco kernels, and trinity, and james bond, and leankernel, just gotta try them all really . For example I'm getting the same if not worse battery with franco, but I might try James Bond kernels, (they are great they seem.) But they are all good in terms of performance.
Good Luck on the new GNexus it's a hell of a phone
I use GummyNex, much more stable and closer to stock than AOKP. I'm also using Franco's 18.2 nightly and get excellent battery life (around 10 hours). Just try everything out there till you find what works for you.
Just make sure you go to the 'CDMA Galaxy Nexus Android Development' for your ROMs. I learned that the hard way...

Random... Why not look at one of the other 100 ongoing threads?
Look at Handtec, Expansys, NegriElectronics, eBay, Amazon...
try apex, it's very close to stock but also giving you lots of options to pay around with.

AOKP is extremely stable and offers a ton of options. Latest build is sick and allows you to remove the bottom softkeys in the power menu so you can use anything full screen and bring the buttons back with the power menu again...
welcome aboard! I just switched from Sprint and was rockin a epic Touch 4G (great phone) and have had this phone in my hand for a week now. Extremely easy to unlock, download and install the toolkit. It's a stickie in the develpment thread. the only mistake I made was not running the stock software for a few days to get a feel for it before flashing something new. I would flash a couple roms and see what they are about, then settle on one.
I'd also like to the recommend aokp which is a very stable rom. I use the stock kernel and don't really need any custom one .

eh, the download link goes directly to the AOKP site: http://forum.aokp.co/ which lists the latest build. People still talk about the latest nightly, the only thing that isnt updated quickly is the title of the thread

[Q] New to GN! Kernel Question

Hi everyone!
Well, I finally switched over from my Driod Charge last week. Prior to that, I had the Fascinate for about a year. So, while I am new to the Nexus, I am certainly not new to Samsung, Android or flashing... as of now, I have unlocked and rooted my phone, but other than that, I am completely stock (and not minding it actually) I am sure I will get around to custom ROMs very soon though. But in the meantime, I have a couple quick questions:
1) Is ALL flashing now done through ROM Manager or Clockwork Mod (i.e. No Odin?)
2) As said, I am still stock (4.0.2) but I would like a kernel to flash, not a ROM (yet!) that will allow overclocking, wireless tethering, etc... suggestions anyone??
Thats really it for now.... just wanted to say HI to my "new" community here on XDA!
Joe
1 for roms etc, yes (use cwm, not rom manager)! only use odin when cw doesnt work.
2 franco.kernel, trinity, glados, popcornkernel and leankernel are all great
And welcome

1) Yes.
Odin is used for MAJOR **** ups only.
2) There are one or two kernels compatible with 4.0.2 in the forum bit I think Franco's one is 4.0.3/4 only.
I think james bond kernel is 4.0.2 compatible.
3) Flash a rom, there are some nice roms to be flashed. Personally I use AOKP 4.0.3.
Yea, I am sure I will get to ROMs soon enough.... but coming from the Charge, the dual core in the GN makes it feel fast enough so as it is!
OK... so no ODIN.
As far as the kernels... any show better battery life? Really the only downside to the GN, but I do have a spare battery and charge, so Im ok.

I would suggest Imoseyon's Lean Kernel in conjunction with Lean Tweaks. I get good speed and decent battery life with it.

Thanks... but I think it says that Leankernel is for 4.0.3/4... I'm in 4.0.2. I'm assuming I can't use it?

James bond is the only 4.0.2 kernel I know of.
Search around though and you might find another.
If you want a stock rom that's 4.0.3 then flash bugless Pete's rom.
Its pretty much plain stock.

CyanogenMod9 Kernel vs. AOSP KT747 Kernel by Ktoonsez

Hey guys,
Still a bit noob concerning kernels so bear with me.
I am running CyanogenMod 9 on my AT&T SIII with their kernel. Would there be a lot of advantages to flash the KT747 kernel by Ktoonsez? Would it be faster?
If I flash this kernel, how do I go back to the CM9 kernel in case of problems?
Thanks!

Hi, I cant say it would have an advantage or be any faster or not because I haven't run CM9. I do use KT747 though. Only thing I can say is try it. If not you should be able to just flash your kernel back. Or just make a nandroid, which ya should do anyways
This thread is going to get closed pretty quick I'm sure. VS threads are not really cool to have and they all turn into personal opinion. You need to just try the kernels out for yourself and then decide. No one can give you an accurate answer for this.

Ok thx.
Didn't actually think to use the nandroid when changing kernels. I use it before changing roms but didn't know it worked for kernels too, which should've been obvious.
How do you find KT747? Does the undervolting make a big difference on battery life and/or performance?

Ok, I'll check it out in detail. Thanks.
2 options to revert kernel changes.
1. Nandroid before installing the kernel. Then only restore system when you want to revert. Its quicker than restoring everything.
2. Reflash the ROM zip. It will reinstall the system without erasing your personal data.

It's pretty absurd to say this. I understand that line of reasoning with ROMs, different roms do very different things, prioritize different ussage patterns, and apearl to different astetics.
Kernels are..... just Kernels. There are literaly only 3 metrics to judge a Kernel by:
1) Performance (how fast is stuff, this may or may not include overclocking).
2) Stability (self explanatory).
3) Battery life (also self explanatory).
There really isn't much subjective here. Some Kernels are just plain better than others. If one kernel is faster, and another has better battery life, then just say that. That's exactly the kind of thing that is helpful to all.

[Q] Need help with my VZW Galaxy Nexus!

Hey Guys!
I have a VZW Galaxy Nexus rooted and running on CM 10.2 (Have no clue what kernel it's running). The phone is great but i'm having a lot of issues. My battery life is very very bad! I know the phone's battery already is terrible as is but mine is really bad. It's becoming more and more slugglish. I barely have any ram free.
My question is what do ya'll suggest is the best ROM, Kernel, etc for me to have on it. I know its off of preference but what i'm looking for is an increase in performance overall. There is a lot ROMs and Kernels out there but I just don't which ones are the best to use. I've thought of a lot of things but don't know what I should do. Under-volt the CPU? Change the kernel? Run a lighter ROM? Basically what ever it takes to get my phone running like most of the newer phones till my contract is over lol. :fingers-crossed:
Thanks,
Alex
The best combination I found prior to getting my new phone is Shiny rom and leankernel

I ran aokp milestone (4.2.2) and either franco or AK. Right now on faircts PA 3.99 with franco. Unless you know what you're doing with kernels, I find franco to be an easy/good kernel to run that requires no tweaking. Also, disabling halo helps lag/speed
I accidently posted it in the wrong section so I posted it in the right section and didn't know how to remove it.
Thanks for the help

Ahh, I was looking into that kernel and rom. What do you think about paranoid? It looks cool but it looks like it will not run very smooth on the Nexus. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not huge in halo and PIE which is why I like aokp better than paranoid but since aokp is still on 4.2.2 ....
that being said, I like fairct's a lot. It's quite fast with franco (couldn't get golden to play nicely) and is usually smooth though I have to reboot every few days (standard for me). I tried a few other 4.3s and I definitely think fairct's is the best thus far. I also really like the cm-10 file manager which you can get on aokp but I can't seem to get it on paranoid.
I'll move onto aokp and/or illusionrom once it gets to 4.3 (illusionrom can't get the home button working...kinda dealbreaker) since I don't really care for halo. I'm using halo now but it's not doing much for me
