Hey guys,
Still a bit noob concerning kernels so bear with me.
I am running CyanogenMod 9 on my AT&T SIII with their kernel. Would there be a lot of advantages to flash the KT747 kernel by Ktoonsez? Would it be faster?
If I flash this kernel, how do I go back to the CM9 kernel in case of problems?
Thanks!

Hi, I cant say it would have an advantage or be any faster or not because I haven't run CM9. I do use KT747 though. Only thing I can say is try it. If not you should be able to just flash your kernel back. Or just make a nandroid, which ya should do anyways
This thread is going to get closed pretty quick I'm sure. VS threads are not really cool to have and they all turn into personal opinion. You need to just try the kernels out for yourself and then decide. No one can give you an accurate answer for this.

Ok thx.
Didn't actually think to use the nandroid when changing kernels. I use it before changing roms but didn't know it worked for kernels too, which should've been obvious.
How do you find KT747? Does the undervolting make a big difference on battery life and/or performance?

Ok, I'll check it out in detail. Thanks.
2 options to revert kernel changes.
1. Nandroid before installing the kernel. Then only restore system when you want to revert. Its quicker than restoring everything.
2. Reflash the ROM zip. It will reinstall the system without erasing your personal data.

It's pretty absurd to say this. I understand that line of reasoning with ROMs, different roms do very different things, prioritize different ussage patterns, and apearl to different astetics.
Kernels are..... just Kernels. There are literaly only 3 metrics to judge a Kernel by:
1) Performance (how fast is stuff, this may or may not include overclocking).
2) Stability (self explanatory).
3) Battery life (also self explanatory).
There really isn't much subjective here. Some Kernels are just plain better than others. If one kernel is faster, and another has better battery life, then just say that. That's exactly the kind of thing that is helpful to all.

Hey,
So sorry for what probably seems like a dumb question. I'm usually a Vibrant guy, but I'm helping a buddy out with a G2/looking at the feasibility of getting one myself. I know at least for the Vibrant our normal kernels don't play nice with our version of CyanogenMod 7. I was curious if the same held true here? Or can I flash any kernel? Also, I see that there are different types based on the type of ROM, which is a new thing to a Vibrant owner. So can anyone recommend me a kernel? I'm pretty decent on flashing and all that, and recovering a brick (at least with my Vibrant). Basically I want the best bottom-line performance. I don't need extra bells and whistles, just a nice high clock frequency. Thanks!

If you're looking for a kernel for CM7, the kernel included is quite snappy though I personally run pershoot's kernel as he undervolts and has some other tweaks which improves responsiveness *and* battery life, at least for me.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
CM7 already comes with its own custom kernel (which also supports some overclocking), so no need to flash a separate kernel if you don't want to. But as already mentioned, pershoot's works well too.
You can't flash any kernel. Some are Sense specific, and some are for non-Sense ROMs. Flashing the wrong one for your ROM can apparently brick the phone, so read thru the threads for the ROM and kernel you are interested in, to be sure. The ROM developer will usually have kernel recommendations, or you can see what kernels users of that ROM have tried.
Like stated above you will need to read the instructions and notes on the kernel thread. CM7 has special requirements. Other Roms don't need. but be very careful on what you flash!
Are there any advantages/disadvantages for using a stock kernel vs a custom kernel? Thanks for the responses.
Sent from my Modded Classic Evo... It's easier this way.
Stock kernel usually does'nt clock over 998MHz and you are'nt able to over or undervolt the kernel for better battery life. Also on custom kernels there are more governor options(smartass,etc.).Custom kernels can go up to 1118MHz sometimes higher, depends on the CPU.

I am aware of those differences. Basically, I'm wondering why I see so many people wanting to use a stock kernel (especially the one in the new OTA) and I was wondering why. Like what are the advantages of using the stock kernel over a custom kernel? Is it more stable? Are there any other things I may not be thinking of that would make a stock kernel a better choice? Thx again!
Sent from my Modded Classic Evo... It's easier this way.
I would think stock kernels to be smoother because they are designed for that particular rom/build,when a custom kernel is designed to run on different roms/builds,then when roms are updated or changed, the custom kernel does'nt,unless changed by the developer, hence the lag and FC's.I hope thats the answer you were looking for.
Custom kernels are made universal for several devices and roms. Although they yield benefits over stock, sometimes they can be unstable on certain setups. like mentioned above stock is made specifically for said device bout somewhat limited, though very stable

Thanks clicked for both of you. Reason I ask is because I am running the new radios that were released with the newest OTA and wanted to know what to look for when I finally give the new kernel a try. Has anyone used the new kernel HTC released with the OTA yet? Has anyone a comparison they could share? Thanks.

Hello there,
I got myself a HTC one and my girlfriend "coming from a Galaxy Ace" is going to use my Nexus.
She doesn't care about fancy stuff, she just wants stability... "and not to much LAG ofcourse"
Its running Paranoid Android with franco kernel right now and i hade some issues, lag and freezes over time.
I was thinking about reverting back to stock, but i think its easier for me to just flash a solid and stable rom.
Or is there an easy way to flash the stock rom? Im not looking forward to alot of ADB and toolkit stuff..
Anny tips / advice??
Thanks!!!

its like you didnt even read the stickies in the forum. its amazing.
all of users will say different roms and different kernels
if you want stability, you should use CM 10.1 (rc4 or nightly)
i am a fan of fancy kernel. i tried all kernels and i am only happy with fancy kernel. its stability and battery drain is very good.
so for me,
cm10.1 and fancy kernel is best combination
Thanks... Imma i'll get CM 10.1
and for Zephius... thanks for leading me to bigxie... if u told me his name it would have saved u some time...
ive been searching... but there is alot... overlooked it... **** happens.. but thanks annyway..
Agritux... thanks
Does your GF want to deal with flashing and upgrading ROMS/Kernels that are not Google Factory Images?
If the answer is no, go pure stock.
If the answer is yes, let her decide.
If the answer is a mix, let her research and if she doesn't want to deal with it go pure stock.
You could do stock ROM with a custom kernel. That would probably be my choice. You get the stability of stock, with the performance improvements of a better kernel. I have heard that a few folks on the forums here are rocking that setup.
I think franco, fancy, and AK are some of the top kernels right now (maybe not AK, please correct me).
CM10.1 with stock kernel.

If you want the most stable and fast rom, CM10.1 RC4 + AK SKL 256 is the way to go, best combo there is but the battery ain't as good as stock. But the battery of the gnex is crap anyways..

Hey Guys!
I have a VZW Galaxy Nexus rooted and running on CM 10.2 (Have no clue what kernel it's running). The phone is great but i'm having a lot of issues. My battery life is very very bad! I know the phone's battery already is terrible as is but mine is really bad. It's becoming more and more slugglish. I barely have any ram free.
My question is what do ya'll suggest is the best ROM, Kernel, etc for me to have on it. I know its off of preference but what i'm looking for is an increase in performance overall. There is a lot ROMs and Kernels out there but I just don't which ones are the best to use. I've thought of a lot of things but don't know what I should do. Under-volt the CPU? Change the kernel? Run a lighter ROM? Basically what ever it takes to get my phone running like most of the newer phones till my contract is over lol. :fingers-crossed:
Thanks,
Alex
The best combination I found prior to getting my new phone is Shiny rom and leankernel

I ran aokp milestone (4.2.2) and either franco or AK. Right now on faircts PA 3.99 with franco. Unless you know what you're doing with kernels, I find franco to be an easy/good kernel to run that requires no tweaking. Also, disabling halo helps lag/speed
I accidently posted it in the wrong section so I posted it in the right section and didn't know how to remove it.
Thanks for the help

I'm not huge in halo and PIE which is why I like aokp better than paranoid but since aokp is still on 4.2.2 ....
that being said, I like fairct's a lot. It's quite fast with franco (couldn't get golden to play nicely) and is usually smooth though I have to reboot every few days (standard for me). I tried a few other 4.3s and I definitely think fairct's is the best thus far. I also really like the cm-10 file manager which you can get on aokp but I can't seem to get it on paranoid.
I'll move onto aokp and/or illusionrom once it gets to 4.3 (illusionrom can't get the home button working...kinda dealbreaker) since I don't really care for halo. I'm using halo now but it's not doing much for me
Hello everyone,
first post since I got a Note 2... and I really like this phone... people seem to have a laugh at me since it is on a larger side, but then I have my own laughs when i see them trying to properly view web pages etc...
I have decided to go the custom Rom way, however, I would like some help.
I would like to have a decent ROM which gives good battery life and decent performance....my usage is pretty normal, email, Facebook, browsing, etc, not much games... so the ROM does not need to be performance oriented.
Any tips please on where to start... Tried searching here, but got a bit mixed up...
I like the stock looking TW Roms and would like Snote and the basic stuff such as calendar etc..
also which kernel would be suggested with this ROM.
Any help will be appreciated I know that I will have to try some ROMS to see which is best, however any help will save me a lot of flashing ROMS, kernels etc..... I know that usage is dependant on user patters etc, but some direction will be appreciated.
Many thanks to all...

You must have misunderstood me...
I want opinions on a custom rom (with all the benefits of a custom rom) that gives good battery life... not one which improves battery life...
been flashing many roms so far and all of them are good and yea battery life depends on your usage, before i use aosp rom specially slimbean, the only reason i use aosp because it doesn't have any lag for me, not for games but generaly everything. even i use stock and rooted samsung rom i got lag wheb browsing even just the settings when sliding it down and even the gallery and messaging, it's just a slight lag. but after trying omega v18 rom it doesn't have and im surprise coz i dont have to use aosp rom with some minor bug and now im happy using samsung custom rom with no lag and enjoying all stock features. so battery is not a problem really on our note 2 just pick whatever that gives better performance. but whatever it's your personal taste on what rom do you want.

cheers... will also try the ROM you mentioned... and thanks... it has to be a TW Rom ideally as i like the interface.... plus some of the samsung apps I use, so will to have those....
its normal to be concerned about battery life
amongst stock sammy roms the battery performance is also going downhill unfortunately, MG1 being the worst,
taking cue from tamirda i went for mf2 and the best one i feel was the chinese release, but it has chinese bloat and no play store,
its malaysian version is defintely one for keeps
me6 is also better than mg1
i like to root with cf auto -root and use xposed framework for customisation so i can stay on an odexed rom.....
tamirdas mf2 custom rom v13 will give a good combination of customisations, rooted deodexed experiences and battery life.
i wish someone would make a rom on the chinese mf2
i also love aosp and its looks and features but battery wise -- well im still testing with various kernel/rom combinations on 4.3
