I searched first, don't worry.
I'm having a weird problem. I have an AT&T Galaxy S3. I rooted it in Odin, flashed the updated bootloader, flashed Cyanogenmod 10.1.2, and then flashed Gapps. All was well for several days until today when it shut off when I was in the middle of writing a text - it had around 70% battery.
Now the phone doesn't boot. It doesn't respond to the power button. If I pull the battery out and put it back in, "SAMSUNG" flashes on screen for half a second, the phone vibrates once, and then the screen goes black. If I try to boot into recovery mode, "SAMSUNG" flashes with the blue text in the corner, but it still shuts off in half a second. Same thing with download mode, it shuts off before I can press up. If I plug the phone in without the battery, the red light flashes for about one second, the phone vibrates, and then the light shuts off.
Ideas? I literally just got the phone back from Samsung after a repair, and it's broken again. All responses are appreciated.
Sounds like your power button may be stuck.

Really? If you hold on your power button while the phone turns on, does it do the same thing?

Yup.
The power button getting stuck seems to be the issue right now. A lot of phones are getting that issue.

Well that's annoying. Thanks. Is there any way to repair this myself? I really can't go without a phone for another two weeks.

Taking it apart. Idk to be honest. One user who had this issue just slammed the phone and worked from there... I'm not advising this but try something's out

Just keep pounding on it till you get the result you want....worked for me on a skyrocket that did that....does it vibrate too ?

Still no luck. I'm getting a little more of the boot screen, but it still goes black. Yes, it vibrates.
I think the problem is that I can shake the button into the unpressed position sometimes, but I still need to press it to attempt to boot. When I do that, it just gets stuck again.

Since it vibrates then its for sure the issue. It's a really cheap fix at any fly by night craigslist outfit but I'd suggest you send it to mobile tech vidoes or some other legit business. Pay the $20-30 bucks so you know it doesn't jacked up when a butcher has to open your phone.
You could try a q-tip with some isopropyl alcohol and just rub around the button and see if some will seep down in there and maybe loosen if it's all gunked up...if not its just shot.
(Warranty out ?)

How long is the turnaround for something like mobile tech videos?
The alcohol wouldn't void the warranty, right? It would just evaporate.
Warranty is still available, and Samsung was extremely generous to me last time. I hard bricked the phone, sent it in, they made a note that it was rooted but fixed it anyway, no questions asked. If third-party service takes anywhere around 2 weeks, then I'll just take my chances with Samsung again.

From what I have heard it less than that but it depends where you are located. I think it wouldn't void any warranty but I certainly wouldn't chance it if you do have one remaining.... did you buy it outright or from a carrier ? If rooted I guess I wouldn't send it to them...with a power button I imagine you could just put in a repair ticket with Samsung and re how much it would cost as I assume you are rooted.

I got it through Costco (they had a sweet bundle with accessories). Would Samsung really care that it's rooted, considering it's a hardware issue? They didn't even care when I hardbricked it because I flashed firmware for an international S3.

If you are just having them repair a power button I can't see them caring because you are paying for work down outside of the warranty scope. I don't think they put up a fuss when a rooted phone gets a LCD replacement. The fact that you jacking with the power button changes the problem is proof it's not software related and its a common issue (albeit the only one). This is my 4th Galaxy product and I've had one, and only one issue and that's the power button got stuck for a day and it's fine now.
On a side rant still drives me crazy that people say Samsung phones feel cheap and have a low build quality. I've held that HTC one and it seemed so haphazardly designed and just plain cheap.
Guys, I don't think it's the power button after all. Now, occasionally, it will start to turn on if I press on the power button. Do you think it could be the same problem this OP is having? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359722

According to the link you provided, the OP can get into download mode while you can't. The fact that the power button has been an issue along with the fact that a little rough treatment has seemingly made it boot a little further tends to lean many to the fact that it is probably the power button.

In fact the complete opposite.
Those who still have these reservations towards Samsung should read this article:
http://mobile.businessweek.com/arti...g-became-the-worlds-no-dot-1-smartphone-maker
I'll cite a paragraph for those who rather not read the entire article.
"Such striving for efficiency and excellence wasn’t always a priority. In 1995, Chairman Lee was dismayed to learn that cell phones he gave as New Year’s gifts were found to be inoperable. He directed underlings to assemble a pile of 150,000 devices in a field outside the Gumi factory. More than 2,000 staff members gathered around the pile. Then it was set on fire. When the flames died down, bulldozers razed whatever was remaining. “If you continue to make poor-quality products like these,” Lee Keon Hyok recalls the chairman saying, “I’ll come back and do the same thing.”
Samsung does things on the cheap, but it is the best at doing it and that is why they easily outsell higher quality devices because they don't make sacrifices in terms of customer demand in features such as removable battery, expandable memory, and easy repair. Their device easily out powers the competition and are extremely high quality for a plastic device.

NO apx
may be other ways.
so long as the battery is unconnected.
vol+ and power then connect usb
vol + and vol- and power and connect usb.
Even if you get to a point where it just isn't causing anything to pop up in device manager then we can at least stop pursuing it and focus on the pogo pins as a way to apx mode.
battery no where in sight or reconnect bat when usb is plugged in etc?
Not might, will. They would be perfectly within their rights to do so, as well. Once you agree a return, it's no longer your property to open, not to mention that there's no way for HTC to know you didn't open the phone before your problem occurred.
You'd better hope they don't notice...

There's no "void" stickers until you start pulling the mainboards out. The only way they would notice is if the phone was somehow damaged in the process.
Re the APX mode - battery needs to be totally disconnected to start. Just try different combos with volume/power buttons and the usb connection. We're all just guessing atm.

Void stickers are not the only way to tell if a phone has been opened. (I know. I used to work for a major consumer / business electronics manufacturer, and one of my duties was inspecting returns and approving or denying warranty and refund claims.)
I wouldn't have taken it apart. There may be a small pin on the motherboard that will identify a case breach and log it. Wouldn't be hard for them to see it. And charge you for the phone.

Yes, let's throw him under the bus. There's every chance that he's not done anything HTC will detect *yet*, but that he will do so in trying to help out. Let's make sure he's aware of the chance that continuing may cost him the entire phone, if he hasn't already done so. Then he can decide if he wants to take that risk.
Or we can just open our own phones... and if we don't want to, why should we not try to help somebody else have a bit of common sense too?

Wrong. It snaps back together just fine, presuming he didn't break anything in opening it. (How do you think HTC puts it together in the first place?)
It's possible he hasn't yet done anything that will land him in hot water with his warranty, and that he will do so if he continues fiddling. It's equally possible he's already shot his warranty. Nobody knows, but if it's the latter he can always tear things back apart and fiddle when he gets his unwarranted phone back from HTC.
I respect the fact the OP wants to help, and the last time i checked that was the ethos of this forum. All i'm seeing is the poor guy being flamed for opening a phone. I'm sure he/she knew the risks. Time being a factor i noted that it was wasted with people assuming control based on previous experience.

I think there is some confusion. the warranty on your phone is by samsung unless you buy insurance. Tmobile and whatever provider you have; as a COURTESY does it for it's customers that bought it from them. You would be lucky to get a 2nd replacement going directly with samsung.
Don't think you even understand how lemon laws work.

Cell Phone Lemon Law. ... Bad because it holds cell phone companies accountable for a phone they didn't manufacture - technically cell phone companies are providing a courtesy to consumers by handling the repair/exchange of the defective handsets, when the consumer could actually go to the manufacturer directly

Hey everyone,
I bought my 8.0 this afternoon (was looking at tablets and saw a lot of good things mentioned here so i took the plunge) and its not turning on. When I turned it on for the very first time, it stayed on the Samsung screen for a long time (i would say 10+ minutes). I know from my other Samsung products that it usually doesnt take that long to boot up, even for the first time, so I hit the power button to restart it and its hasnt turned on since. Has anyone heard of anything like this before? By the time everything happened Best Buy was closed so I will take it back tomorrow for them to look at but I was hoping someone may know whats the issue and I wouldnt have to return it. Thanks in advance.
Are you sure it has enough charge? Try plugging it in for a while.

Try Samsung support chat
If you are getting desperate, you might try Samsung support. They have a chat service and the helper may be able to get it going. If you hold down the power and volume up (or is it down) buttons for 15 seconds, you might get the reboot menu. But I would connect with Samsung's 24/7 chat help and see if maybe they can help.

Hey guys!
QUICK SPECS:
- SPH-L710RWBSPR (Marble White 16gb version)
- Under a year old
Okay so I'm almost certain my s3 has Sudden Death Syndrome as it won't turn on each time, and fails to stay on after occasionally turning on once. The power button has failed I can tell, as the power menu randomly pops up when its on, and then BOOM the screen goes black and it's off again. I have tried multiple batteries, download mode, recovery mode, usb recognition from the computer, heck even adb into recovery.. NO AVAIL. So, all in all, my beautiful phone - is now an
Now --- my question is! WHAT SHOULD I SAY TO SPRINT OVER THE PHONE? In order to get a free replacement phone? There's no Samsung Service Center around me and so I must go through Sprint. I just don't want to deal with any representatives that think the way to deal with customers is like a child. ESPECIALLY when the customer could do their job better than them. ANYWAY, /endrant. I read from a post it's safe to say, ""I charged my phone for 3 hours before bed.. unplugged it... and screen flashed white... and it keeps rebooting itself and it wont stop.."...Do NOT tell them you left it on the charger for 5+ hours!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats possible internal damage and voids warranty.""
Should I do that, or just tell the truth and say "My phone has the Sudden Death Syndrome and I would like a replacement."
Thanks guys, I appreciate the input.
Colton
Um idk where you read the 5+ hours can hurt your phone. Every newer electronic device has overload protection built into it.
I would just explain to them whats happening. They most likely will walk you through the usual trouble shooting steps. Or you can take it to a Authorized Sprint Service center.

Okay, thanks man. I'm just worried about the whole "if your're rooted your warranty is void" thing. Because I'm running a custom ROM on my phone, but if it is impossible to boot up, Sprint won't be able to tell right? So I'm all good right?
If they get it booted up, then yes they could. I've seen a Authorized Sprint Service center repair a broken power button. But I've also seen them just issue a refurb. It depends on the tech that looks at it. Idk if they would just issue you a refurb over the phone without one of their techs looking at it.

Yes they could look at it, but it's not just the power button that's broken. The issue with Sudden Death Syndrome is that it's an eMMC Firmware malfunction and so the chip is messed up, and so basically this is all Samsung's fault, not mine. I have read in this case, I would not get a refurbished phone, I would get a brand new replacement.
Also, I have tried to see if I can revert to stock again. But in my situation, is there any way to even do that? My computer doesn't recognize my phone when I try to connect it, and I can't get into download mode or recovery or anything.
Could I possibly try this method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43305728 even if my phone has the SDS issue?
EMMC failure issue was only for the international i9300 US s3s aren't effected by that

The SDS forQualcomm S3's is that the power button gets sunken in its socket, or otherwise damaged and causes the phone to continuously power itself off.

Oh, okay. So can my phone still have Sudden Death Syndrome though? It would just be a malfunction of the power button?
Also, do you by chance think my phone could be revived following the process of this thread? : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2345860&page=3

Okay, have you come across a fix in my situation then?
Compressed air can? Hitting the power button on the end of a washer? What do you think Cnexus?
LOL. Don't do the second one. Unless you have an upgrade/money to buy a new phone...
Compressed air has helped people. Also taking it apart and messing with the power button a bit and then putting it back together, as well as just jiggling the power button around
All you really need is for it to stay alive long enough for you to boot into DL mode and Odin back to stock

Alright cool I'll do that man. Do I just youtube "how to take a galaxy s3 apart and mess with power button" or what? Is there a guide somehwere? I'll have to buy a small screwdriver right?
And odin to stock MD4 right?
Also, there's no hope for backing up my phone at this point right? I haven't backed it up in a while.
Anyone have any idea how to disassemble this tablet? The power button on mine has become a bit 'sticky'.
I imported this tablet so my local Samsung won't cover it under warranty

You want to disassemble it it for a sticky Power button? Does the sticky power button stop you from using the tablet properly ie. Does it swicth off the display on its own...If not I would honestly just leave it alone. Opening it up can cause loads of other problems.
If you read the Warrenty i think it does say that Samsung May attempt to fix the problem even if the tablet is from another part of the world. Worth giving them a call if you havent done so already.

It does jam and sometimes reboots the tablet.
The local Samsung service centre told me that they'll need to replace the entire chrome bezel (what a load of nonsense). They'll give me a quote by tomorrow but I honestly doubt I'll pay whatever that is!

I have to say, despite being very cynical when I first read your suggestion...... It actually worked!
It's not 100% perfect but definitely bearable if the repair cost is humongous. Thanks a lot mate!
