Note 2 storage issues - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hiya,
I've been using the apps2sd.bin script with smanager to swap the internal storage and sd storage around. What is happening though is when you go into Settings-storage it looks like they have been swapped around but everything is still being installed in the internal storage and as you know its a pityful size and gets full quickly hence why I bought a 64 gb card.
Is there something I am doing wrong or is there another method that works properly that I can use even if I have to flash a new rom??
Cheers,

I'm stumped

Hi everybody. I am trying to get my daughters phone set up. She is 20, very busy, and I only get the phone an hour or so at a time which is frustrating. I have modded my own android phones(Note, Infuse,Gnex) so I'm not a beginner, but this captivate glide is acting a little different.
Here is where I am. CWM is installed and a backup of 2.3.6 is done, and a copy saved on my laptop. I have ardatdat's 1.2 version kernel ready to flash for root and to remove the IQcarrier junk. She will probably stay on stock, rooted since she is not into teching her phone but does want to remove ads and maybe tether to a tablet occasionally on ATT without a tethering plan- tit BU and freezing or removing the tethering manager.
I am having trouble getting the phone to recognize an 8 gb sd card. I have repartitioned it so more apps can be moved over(primary fat32 and logical-ext 2) and split the card to 4gb and 4gb.(approx)- even when just left as a one partition card with 8gb fat 32 the phone just won't recognize it. I put the old 2gb card into the phone and that one is recognized but is from a non android phone- an LG xenon.
I want to put the zip files to flash on the external sd card along with a few apk's ti install with the appinstaller. But.. the phone won't see the files. Do I have to use the internal storage?????
Don't have the phone now- it's off to work with her. So I will try later tonite. Any suggestions??
Thanks. Open for any help here. I have never had this much trouble before! Have searched for sideloading apk's, but from what I am finding it has to be rooted first??? I have checked unknown sources for install of 3rd party apps and usb debugging also checked.
I will continue my hunting for info. I'm sure it's just basic stuff I'm just not seeing. Thanks again
Ah. CWM Recovery is not compatible with the external sd card, I believe. It's located under /sdcard/external_sd but the zips are invisible in the recovery. So yes, I think you have to use internal

Thanks for that. Did not read that anywhere! Any idea about apks on the external sd card?
Ive tried that too... The apps are located in the data partition on the kernel so that is already directed to internal... The only things most people put are Media like movies because music players scan the entire /sdcard partition and the /external_sd is in it.
Hope this helped ^o^

You may need to format the sd card in the phone itself to get it to show up, some people have had problems with cards formatted in other devices or a pc.
I haven't tried a dual partition card in the Glide, but I came from a Motorola Flipside which had an absolutely tiny amount of space for apps, making link2sd and the second partition virtually mandatory. The Glide, however, has 2gb internal memory for apps, and the ~3.75gb internal memory that's mounted as /sdcard that you can store apps on with the standard Move to SD build into android, so I can't imagine anyone needing more storage than that for standard apps.
You can always points Titanium Backup to /sdcard/external_sd, my backup folder tends to get pretty big since I keep multiple backups. If she's installing a ton of games that have extra downloads to the sdcard though, you can fill up the internal "sd card" pretty quickly, and there's only a couple of ways to deal with that. She can give you the phone after installing those games and downloading the extra data, and you can manually move the data over to the external SD and create symlinks yourself, which can be tedious.
Alternatively, you can modify the vold.fstab to change the mount points, putting the real external sd as /sdcard and the internal storage as /sdcard/external_sd. There's instructions for this here. The vold.fstab method is what I personally use, as I've got a 32gb sd card and far too many games that want to download 500mb+ each.

Hi and thanks. I just read about that mod. Is it as straightforward as just rewriting that file in rootexplorer? It sounds too easy!
I was gonna format the sd card in the phone but was not sure it would format the internal card and not the external one since I can't seem to get it recognized. I would be in big do do if I erased her stuff!!! It might be a bad card and I'll try an alternate one.
Yep, it's really as easy as snagging the file, editing it, and rewriting it in root explorer (or a shell, I haven't bought root explorer so I tend to do things from the shell). As for formatting in the phone, it should list both an SD card and USB storage, the usb storage is the internal storage, and the sd card is actually the sd card, it *should* have a format option there if the card is good, even if it's not seeing the files on it.
Thank you all!!!!!

Piece of cake!!!!! :highfive: We now have the external sd card (only 8gb for now) mounted instead. Whoever came up with that very clever work around is genius. That's better than apps2sd or link2sd.
Thank you so much to everyone who responded. Between all of you I have Rooted with the kernel on the internal card, and the appinstaller saw the apks when I put them on the internal card. My original 8gb card was bad. It was a cheap one- $5 or $8 dollars. I got 2 and the 2nd one works fine- formatted in my computer and phone saw it immediately. I transferred the stuff from the internal to the external. Did I need to do that? I left it on the internal incase the sd card is removed. Tethering manager is removed- att junk is frozen.
One more question if I may? If another rom is flashed, or I odin back to stock for whatever reason, does this sd card switch stay, or is it overwritten with the new rom? Just need to know what to do if I ever need to reset this phone.
I also added my google account to the market to put my paid apps on her phone but when I signed in to the play store under my account my paid apps did not show as paid. Anyone know why? I worked around it but I was surprised.
Again thanks to such a nice group of people! :highfive: I had a crash course in the captivate glide in 24 hrs. You gave me info here I don't think I could have found with continued searching.

Moving everything that was on the internal memory to the SD card was a good call, since you swapped the mount points everything that stored stuff on the internal memory will now expect that stuff to be on the sd card. There's no need to keep it on the internal memory (you can delete everything there and it'll recreate LOST.DIR) unless you plan on swapping back at any point, in which case you could just copy stuff across before swapping back.
As for flashing another rom, that'll require you edit the vold.fstab again unless the rom has already made that change, which none of our existing roms have.
Personally, I keep the internal memory completely empty as far as daily use things go. CWR will store its backups there, as it mounts the memory independently of the vold.fstab, and all roms/kernels/etc you want to flash can go there, leaving the sd card free for things you actually use.
Bak- thank you so much for all the info. I saved the original file and I will make a copy of the edited mount file in case I need it again. If I ever get her phone back I will clear the internal card since that info is now on the external one.
I wonder how long this captivate glide will hold up with my daughter. She is very hard on her cell phones. Already case #1 broke due to a drop. 2 more are on the way. When I pointed out it could have been the phone broken she said- yeah, I know. I'll keep the case on. :victoryshe hates cases!) Hopefully this phone will get her thru her senior year in college!
Thank you everyone who pitched in to get me the info I needed to get it going.

[Q] SD card format

Hi guys
Upgraded to Note 2 N7105 International version 4 weeks ago, great phone and really loving all the features.
Trouble is I bought this because I wanted a more powerful phone than my previous Nexus S, so It could handle more powerful apps and games.
So on top of the internal 16gb of internal memory, I installed a Sandisk 64gb external card to store my apps and games, not realizing the phone does not support moving Apps to SD in standard form.
After investigating, found i could do it with a third party app with root access. So I rooted with Chainfires CF Auto Root, and installed link2sd App. My phone is definitely rooted as I have Titanium Backup working, but when i try to move any Apps to SD it says no free memory, and also to check SD card has been formatted with 2 partitions and they are both set to primary, and on the info page for link2sd its says the same about partitioning
I assume this formatting is my problem as the SD card is virtually empty, just 3 pics and 2 short videos on it, and still showing 59gb free when i go to settings/storage.
If this is my problem, how do I get it formatted correctly, I tried to do it through my computer running XP but only get format command, with no option for Partitions or any thing, are there any programs or procedures you can recommend
Thanks in advance
Gary

There is a mod that lets you swap internal memory with sd card. Have a look in this threat.
If you only need to format your sd card to FAT 32 then you should get the GUI version of this app here
SD card format
Thanks for the info Retrorom
Have decided not to go down the internal external memory swap route, for various operational reasons, plus quite a few people seem to be getting issues with it. And the other one didn't seem to have a facility to make your own partitions, which is what i need.
After reading up a bit, From recommendations I have installed a program called Minitool Partition Wizard on my computer.
The only problem now is when i attach the card to the computer, it is showing as only having 27gb of usable memory, whereas in the phone it was showing 59gb. I thought this may be because it needed reformatting, so I formatted on the computer, and it was then only showing 27gb i when inserted in the phone, so i have again reformatted the card in the phone, and again now showing 59gb as it was originally. But i still still only have1 partition, and need 2 for the link2sd program to work
The trouble is when i put the SD back in the the computer it still only shows 27gb that is 32gb short of the 59gb what it shows while in the phone.
Was wondering why this should be, I'm running an old Pentium 4 system with XP on it, would it be that this can not handle or recognise 64 gb cards.
Just to mention i will be upgrading this computer 2 Windows 7 within the next week or so, and also going to build a brand new one in a couple of weeks which will have Windows 7 also , so should be a lot more compatible and flexible if that is the problem
SD Card Format
Update
I've been reading up, and it seems, Windows, especially earlier versions cannot recognize or format SD Cards over 32 gb, something to do with errors in the architecture, which wasn't originally designed for cards of this size.
There is a driver update, to get over this, but negotiating the Microsoft site to download it is proving to be a bit of a mission, It's ridiculously complicated, just sending me round and around in circles to try and find the download.
So if anyone can point me to the download, or a download that will do the job it will be much appreciated
Download exfat support for old XP machine
Download and use file according your XP system 32/64bit
you will get format with exfat format. which support larger size.
Another thing i recommend is 'directory bind' for moving data to ext SD card, this also make hassle free factory reset, Here is guide.
Thanks Ketan
I've already got the exFat support loaded, though it still only shows 27 gb on card
Now looking at the directory bind, and may give that a try later, once I've given it a good read and know i'm not going to do anything wrong .
Will let you know later how it goes
I'm actually surprised the phone supports higher than Windows. Most phones are limited to 32 gb cards are they not?

have you try formating it on PC with exfat support?
UnL33t My Galaxy Note 2 Automatically recognises the higher capacity
Ketan yes I've tried to format on computer with exfat support, but still only shows 27gb, and when i put back in phone it showed 27gb in there too, so had to reformat it in the phone and now showing 59gb as it was originally,
But still showing 27gb when put in computer
I am going to upgrade my XP up to windows 7 in a couple of weeks, and also going to build a new games machine with Windows 7 on in a few weeks too, do you reckon they will have better support for the higher capacity card built in

[Q] How to properly make use of SD card storage?

Hey guys.
I tried searching for my problem, and I'm not entirely sure it got it right.
So, I got the S4 Mini, and use CM 12.1 (by FAK, built 20151005) and CWM 6.0.4.6.
Works like a charm, thanks for that and the idiot-proof tutorials on that.
8GB storage being not that much, I bought a 32gb micro SD card to enhance my storage.
From what I read before, Android got problems using SD cards properly since Kitkat.
So, now my problem:
I partitioned the card as fat32 (as was somewhere described) not sure if that even ist the right choice ^^
Now when I install some app vom Google Play Store, I can't even choose SD card as storage, it goes straight to internal.
In Settings, there is no option to make SD card the standard storage.
Only thing I can do is "move app to sd", which seems to work, as all the apps are gone when I remove the SD card and start the phone.
But somehow the internal storage is still as full as before moving them, and the external SD is not close as full as it should be.
Having 8GB internal storage should leave me with about 5,4GB usable storage. I only left the GApps on the internal storage (Chrome, Play Store etc) which add up to ~700mb. So there should easily be 4,5GB free internal storage, but I only get like 1,2GB.
My SD card on the other hand, says it just uses ~400MB, when it should be 1,5GB or even more.
Is the only solution trying working with "Link2SD" (does it even work properly?) or is there anything I did miss?
I tried reading up on some stuff, but there is just so much, and I didn't really find something fitting my problem.
Thanks a lot in advance, guys!
Would have postet screenshots from my settings, but I'm not allowed yet, sorry.
That's what I did.
Create two partitions on the SD card, using mini partition tool.
First part is FAT32 second one is ext-3.
Using then Link2SD will now detect the ext-3 partition and request then a reboot.
All APS can now linked to the ext-3 partition manually or if configured automatically.
I'm using 10gb on ext-3 and rest for fat.
Hey nikon. Thanks for your answer.
If there's no other solution, I'll try that.
What I don't get, why only 10GB on ext-3? and then ~20GB as fat32?
edit: ok, tried using link2sd, but doesn't work, because apparently it isn't rooted? when I start l2sd, it asks which partition to use, I check ext2-ext4, and it says "mount script cannot be created - not allowed to su"
I guess su means superuser, which means, it isn't rooted. But I got CWM and CyanogenMod installed, shouldn't it be rooted??
I'm confused
That was enough for me
Music and Video is still on FAT so you can get access over USB. If you put everything on ext this one is blocked during USB access.
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9195 mit Tapatalk
Ok, just thought of that. Sounds good, but I still got to root my phone. Any idiot-proof way to do this?
As is said, I already got CWM and CM 12.1 installed, any easy way to root, so I can use link2sd?
edit: nevermind, 2minutes google solved this one
Thanks man, nikon. Gonna try out link2sd like you said.

Unable to move apps on SD Card after 6.0 update

Hello,
After upgrade and factory reset and micro-SD format, I am unable to move apps on the SD Card of my LG G4 H815.
I know that some can't be moved, but some can, and I am unable to move some games that before I was able to move, because I don't get that option. I also tried with a different micro-SD, although the card worked just fine before the upgrade.
I just don't get that options - I don't even get the option to format the external SD as phone memory, as I know it should do.
I wanted to post screenshots but I can't, because I'm a new member, so I'll try to explain:
- I go to Settings - Apps - choose a game - storage - there are only 2 options, clear data and clear cache
-I go to Storage - SD Card - settings - (here I have only Eject and Format, and if I choose Format, the only option I have is format as portable storage)
Did anyone faced a similar problem? I digged around bout couldn't find anything like this.
Thank you
I have the same problem, wen i upgrade to 6.0 i have some games with the option to choose were the data goes, less than 5.0 but i can move few.
I hard reset to stop batery drain and now i cant move any data from apps to SD card.
Same problem here! Even link2sd doesn't works...
Did you format your sd card as portable/external? How did you format your partitions and what formats when you tried link2sd?
Just tried it link2sd works for me using Fat32 on first partition and second one ext2. It had to reboot once but I guess it has something to do with my systemless root as it simply dissappeared and I had to reroot again.
The only option is portable in the format on the phone. I was under the impression under marshmallow you would be able to format either to portable or internal.
Just checked move 2 sd isnt showing up in options my guess it has something to do with the new internal/external feature, did not test with link2sd only linking tested and that works for me. I guess that you can only format as external is caused by stock rom. After all I have read internal seems not to be a good choice for mobiles with enough internal storage
Link2sd was formatted as ext4 that worked on lolly, but the big problem is I formatted as external (only choice) and the "move to sd" button does'nt appear at all! Maybe I should format all the sd as ext4? In a nutshell the 20B is using my sd as an otg storage, can read and write, but not considered by games and so (luckily the camera srill save pics and vids on sd).as far as I can see there is only thi thread and we are the only one thata have this problem!
I search about it and seems, LG dont implement 6.0 feature to use SD as internal memory if SD card have the minimal speed requirements
Try ext2 on second partition then it will work. I only have the problem that it wont mount at reboot, I always have to wait after complete boot and some time more until it recognizes second partition and mounts it. Perhaps an issue with systemless root (supersu 2.65beta) I am using but as long as no system apps are linked there is no problem with this (and I dont reboot often)
Ext4 on link2sd used to work, but in 6.0 (20b) it looks like I deleted a lot of "trash" so I was able to reatore all the app without link2sd and I would like not to use it, just to move app to mi samsung64gb sd to save other internal space for the future.I know it doesn't move the complete app, but one day maybe you will need even just 5mb...never say never....and one day you may need even just 5mb of internal memory...never say never... anyhow it store lictures in my sd, so I'm really afraid is about a limit of the rom or the memory card (I miss the format as internal memory too, while someone has that option on G4, am I wrong?) I have the classic silver 64gb samsung micro sd not the ultrafast version I used to make 4k vids on my old S5!
I personally bought link2sd as the old move 2 sd didnt work well with my samsung galaxy tab s, most apps crashed but using link2sd they worked (not all but most of them). As for SD card I have a sandisk ultra 128GB and no problem recording 4k to it, I use the mod with the highest bitrate from the forums here

I was talnkig about my SD not to say if I can record or not 4k (we are off topic here), but just to say that is NOT the ultrafast that samsung requires for recording 4k video without modding.
I just mean that now I have a "Samsung MB-MP64D/EU Micro SD XC EVO, UHS-1, CLASS 10 orange/wite" not the "Samsung MB-MG64D/EU micro SDXC Pro 64Go Class 10 UHS-I silver".
The latter was required by samsung to record 4k video=superfaster compared to the hal priced one I have. So, MAYBE, the SD does the difference in Marshmallow, it detects the kid of SD and allow us to use it as internal memory and/or to move the apps on the sd without the Link2SD app (for the record, I used ext4 withou problem with lollypop, now Link2SD doesn't find the partition, I won't waste time trying other ext till my phone will be full).

Format SD as Internal?

when i format my SD card to be used as internal storage and i place a ROM on the SDcard to install / update the Rom im on i cant locate the zip at all. Is because its formated as internal and also when i connect to my computer only the sdcard shows not the internal memory any ideas
Let me just give you an other warning, when using Custom ROMs you should not use internal storage, because the moment you decide to switch ROMs and you either choose to or have to wipe /data, strangely it will wipe and corrupt an SD card,, its weird because wiping /data doesn't touch the real internal storage but if your SD is set as internal storage it wipes it.
I learned that the hard way, I switched to a custom ROM on my HTC 10, I was using SD Card as Internal for the first time on this device in Stock Rooted ROM, the very second I wiped /data to do a clean flash, TWRP said "can't mound sd card".
The card was wiped in a weird format so it was corrupted, a 64GB Sandisk Ultra became a 16GB card that wouldn't properly mount even in windows, yes for real! even formatting in Windows 10 wouldn't fix it, I had to use a special tool from sandisk's website to repair the card.
After all of this I searched XDA to confirm this is a real issue, it wasn't just weird bad luck, so if I were you I would be careful or just switch back to SD External Mode.
The final conclusion is this feature is very nice for the regular world with OTA's but it seems in the Root world it can be a disaster, which I'm sure why you could be having issues as well.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, the last part you mentioned is normal, internal storage will no longer be accessible in Windows or even Android for you, apps can still install there though, and in the App Manager you have the choice where you want a particular app installed.

No problem, I will tell you my set up if it helps you, I use SD as External, all my Music, Photos, Videos, Game ROMs(SNES, N64, etc), TWRP backups, any ROMs or flash stuff is all on the SD.
My internal storage is usually never touched by me file transfer wise, all apps and other caches and such are stored there by force but I still have a good amount of space because of the SD help still.
And I have a bit of apps, including all the big file sized GTA games, Real Racing 3, etc.
Good luck on what you decide is best for you!
hey there. How should I format my SD card? Ext2/3/4? size? What's the best choice? Got a 128gb card
Thx for reply
