[Q] Root Permission - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the best application for changing the root permissions like rw-r-r?

I would recommend SuperSU

Root explorer is good.
SuperSU is just an app to manage root access. It doesnt allow you to change the permissions of files.

Agreed. RootExplorer is the best out there for this purpose.
You should try it out.

[Q] Removing a r/o system app

I am trying to remove the SPG.apk (I believe that's Verizon's tether block application) from a stock rom that is already installed on my phone. I tried using root explorer however it won't let me. I believe there is a way to use adb to do this? If so, what would the command lines be?
use
Code:
adb uninstall <package name>

To delete anything off the /system partition in root explorer, you need to mount the it r/w first. There is a button on the top that should say "Mount R/W". You need to press that before deleting anything.
Root Explorer will let you remove anything you want.
Provided you click the Mount R/W button in the top right first.....

He's gotta be if he's running root explorer. It won't run if you don't have root.
Def rooted, however removing the app I listed below just messed things up. Anybody know how to remove the Verizon tether block without installing a custom rom

I wasn't sure if root explorer would function as a normal file manager without root. Especially considering he said he is running s stock rom.

Nope. It won't run without root. The developer has another file explorer called "Explorer" as opposed to "Root Explorer", and that one runs without root.

Are you on 4.1.2 or 4.2.1? And do you have see root enabled on your file explorer of choice?
4.1.2 should be data/media/clockworkmod/backup

What version of CWM? Should be data/media/clockworkmod if youre above 6.0.1.5. But you need to enable root explorer settings and system as writable [i believe] to see anything in data in es explorer.

Nvm I found a work around using the PC tool. Thanks anyway.
So long as you had ES File Explorer set to have root access you would have found them in /media/data/clockworkmod
EDIT: You know something, this used to work but now it doesn't. How strange...

Precisely why I posted. I said I tried everything. I meant EVERYTHING. I found a workaround using the gnex toolkit.

Okay now it does NOT reboot with that/
Why is it rebooting with root explorer something I should be concerned about?
same thought with @sonic2911. i used Bin4ry method and never get rebooting either with root explore or any others
So I reset to see if it fixes and nope. I'm able to only delete or add one thing per reboot

I did reset and used that method much better but still reboots so cant really do much its fine for now but reboots happen when using any root/R/W.
If youre using the bin4ry method and have recovery instelled, I suggest u to delete all SU data and uninstall it.Then root your phone back using the bin4ry method again.Problem should be gone by then.

[HELP] Does anyone know how to get CyanogenMod File Explorer working on stock?

Hey Guys,
I have been able to get CyanogenMod File Explorer working on stock but it will not allow for root access... I've put the file in system/app and set permissions RW-R--R-- and still no luck. Anyone succeed with this?

This may not be the answer you're looking for, but why do you need to get the CM File Explorer working? There are many excellent alternatives.

Ok, well good look in getting it to work, but do consider that a file explorer is just a tool and not one that you want to spend a lot of time in, anyway. For me, moving files around on my Android through the Windows file explorer or ADB is what I focus on. At most, I will use the ES File Explorer to launch a file or delete it.
Pretty sure you can download it on fdroid.
Yup here it is.

Figured out why it does not work on most devices... Mist devices who have busybox installed do not have all the symlinks and applets needed to run the file manager.

It works for me. You'll get an error and pop-up window if the intended directory is mounted as read only, just remount r/w and make sure root explorer has root permissions, and it works fine. I use only root explorer, and can absolutely guarantee it works to do this operation, as I started doing the same thing when titanium was unable to convert to system app on 5.1.1.
A click on thanks is always appreciated.

If you're running encrypted, that's the issue. Otherwise, try cutting and pasting. You said before you copied, copy won't work, you can't have the same file in two different app groups at the same time.

I doubt it's the boot .img, depends which ROM you're using I guess, I think it's a permissions issue with root explorer. As I said, I've never seen that operation fail on my device outside of r/o, it works fine for me on flo and four other devices on 5.1.1 ROMs.
